Round-Over Bits Basics: How to Choose, Set Up, and Use One

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Round-over bits are used to soften a sharp board edge with a consistent quarter-round profile. Choose the bit by its radius—not its overall diameter—then match the shank to your router, set the height with a scrap test, and keep the router base stable throughout the cut.

A round-over router bit cuts a quarter-round curve along the edge of a board. Its stated size is the cutting radius: a 1/4-inch round-over bit is intended to leave a 1/4-inch radius, not a 1/4-inch overall cutter diameter.

Choose the radius from the project drawing when one is specified. Otherwise, consider the thickness and width of the stock, how comfortable you want the edge to feel, and how prominent you want the profile to look. A 1/8-inch bit lightly breaks an edge; 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch bits are useful general-purpose sizes; and a 1/2-inch bit produces a much more noticeable, softer profile.

What a round-over bit does

A round-over bit removes the sharp corner where two faces of a board meet. The finished edge is a quarter-circle rather than a square corner. This can:

  • make furniture, shelves, tabletops, drawer parts, boxes, and trim more comfortable to handle;
  • give a project a softer or more finished visual character;
  • reduce the prominence of small dents and finish damage at a sharp corner; and
  • create a consistent profile across multiple parts.

Most beginner-friendly round-over bits are bearing-guided. The pilot bearing rolls against the workpiece edge and controls the bit’s horizontal position. With the standard bearing installed and the bit set at the correct height, the cutter forms its intended quarter-round profile.

The bearing does not determine the nominal radius by itself. The cutter geometry determines the radius; the bearing controls where that geometry meets the edge. The bearing should turn freely and remain clean. Router-bit bearings are generally sealed and permanently lubricated, so a bearing that binds or no longer turns freely should be replaced rather than forced or casually lubricated.

Round-over radius sizes: which one should you choose?

Nominal radius Typical effect Good starting uses
1/8 inch Subtle edge break; the board still looks nearly crisp Shelves, small trim, drawer parts, and edges that only need slight softening
1/4 inch Noticeable but restrained curve General furniture work, boxes, shelves, and many tabletop edges
3/8 inch More prominent, comfortable profile Heavier furniture parts and edges where a softer appearance is wanted
1/2 inch Large, clearly visible round-over Thicker stock, substantial furniture, and deliberately softened designs
3/4 inch Very prominent curve and substantial material removal Specialty work where the drawing and stock thickness specifically allow it

These are common sizes, not universal rules. If the plans specify a radius, follow them. If they do not, compare the radius with the thickness of the stock and the amount of material around the edge. The board must be thick and wide enough for the cutter to form the intended curve without leaving an unwanted shoulder, fillet, or flat area—or cutting into an adjacent face.

Radius is not cutter diameter

Product listings may show several different dimensions: cutting radius, overall cutter diameter, cutting length, and shank diameter. Do not buy by overall diameter when the project calls for a radius. The radius is the curved portion you are trying to leave on the workpiece.

For example, a 1/4-inch round-over bit is named for its 1/4-inch radius. Its overall diameter will be larger than 1/4 inch. Read the product’s radius specification and compare it with the plan, not just the largest dimension in the listing.

Buying a round-over router bit

For one project, the sensible purchase is a round-over router bit with the required radius, a bearing suited to that profile, and a shank that matches your router’s collet. There is no single best size for every project, and a higher price or larger cutter does not compensate for choosing the wrong radius or an incompatible shank.

Check the shank size

The bit shank must match the router’s collet capacity. Round-over bits are commonly sold with 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch shanks. Some larger full-size routers accept 1/2-inch shanks, while many compact or palm routers use 1/4-inch collets. Check the router manual before buying.

A larger shank is not automatically the right choice. Compatibility, the bit’s overall diameter, the router’s capacity, and the manufacturer’s operating instructions all matter. Do not assume that a collet adapter is acceptable simply because the bit appears to fit; use only an arrangement approved for that router and collet.

Single bit or multi-piece set?

  • Buy one bit when the project specifies one radius or you are learning the operation. This avoids paying for profiles you may not use.
  • Buy a set when you regularly make furniture, boxes, trim, or other projects that call for several profiles. A documented five-piece Freud set, for example, includes 1/8-, 1/4-, 3/8-, 1/2-, and 3/4-inch radii, 1/2-inch shanks, an additional bearing for beading, and a storage case.

A set is convenient, but verify every bit’s shank size and the dimensions of the included bearings before ordering. Marketplace stock, prices, ratings, and exact contents can change, so treat the manufacturer’s current specification as the authority.

The bearing and cutting height

A standard or flush bearing is the normal starting point for a round-over. Some combination sets include a smaller bearing. That alternate bearing changes the cutter’s offset and can create a beaded profile with a narrow shoulder or flat. It is not simply a replacement for correct setup.

Set the bit’s height so the intended part of the cutter meets the edge evenly. The correct height depends on whether you are routing the top edge, bottom edge, both edges, or intentionally leaving a small fillet or shoulder. A small change in height can change the appearance of the profile, so use a test piece rather than relying solely on a visual estimate.

How to set up a round-over bit

  1. Inspect the equipment. Confirm that the shank matches the collet, the bearing spins freely, and the cutting edges are clean and undamaged. Do not use a bit with a binding bearing, chipped cutter, or visible damage.
  2. Disconnect power. Unplug the router or remove its battery before installing the bit, changing a bearing, adjusting height, clearing debris, or troubleshooting. A switched-off router is not enough protection if it can start unexpectedly.
  3. Install the bit according to the router manual. Insert the shank securely into the collet using the manufacturer’s specified procedure. Do not rely on an improvised insertion depth or an unapproved adapter.
  4. Set the approximate height. Position the cutter so the bearing contacts the workpiece edge and only the intended portion of the profile is exposed. Lock the router’s height adjustment.
  5. Secure a scrap test piece. Use the same species and, ideally, the same thickness as the project stock. A test cut reveals the actual profile before you risk the finished board.
  6. Inspect the test cut. A ridge or fillet where a clean quarter-round was intended usually means the bit is set too far into the workpiece. An incomplete curve means the cutter is not exposed far enough. Check the edge orientation as well.
  7. Adjust in small increments. Disconnect power before making adjustments, lock the setting again, and repeat the test cut. Retest whenever the stock thickness, edge orientation, or intended profile changes.
  8. Route the project part. Keep the base stable, maintain a balanced stance, and use a controlled pass rather than trying to compensate for a poor setup with speed or pressure.

The scrap test also lets you judge the profile after light sanding and finishing. A radius that looks appropriate on raw wood may appear too strong—or too weak—once the edge is finished and viewed beside the rest of the project.

Handheld router or router table?

Using a handheld router

A handheld router is convenient for large panels, assembled boxes, and parts that provide enough surface for the router base. The critical issue is base support. If too little of the base rests on the workpiece, the router can tip as it approaches a corner or crosses a narrow section. Tipping can create a divot, an uneven transition, or an inconsistent radius.

When routing an assembled box, use the surrounding surfaces to support the base where possible. An auxiliary support platform can also extend the supported area. Plan the cut so the router remains stable throughout the pass, especially around outside and inside corners.

Using a router table

A router table can be preferable for long, narrow, small, or repetitive parts. The workpiece moves across a stable surface, and a fence can help maintain a consistent position. Adjustable fences, featherboards, and dust collection can make repeated edge routing more controlled and cleaner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A router table is an optional workflow improvement, not a requirement for basic round-overs. Featherboards can help hold stock against the table or fence, but they do not replace safe hand positioning, a properly adjusted fence, or secure control of the workpiece. Follow the router-table, router, and bit instructions for the specific setup.

How to reduce tear-out and uneven edges

A bearing guide helps control position, but it does not guarantee a perfect result. The finish depends on the wood species, grain direction, bit sharpness, router speed, depth of cut, feed control, workpiece support, and whether the router is handheld or table-mounted.

For the most reliable beginner results:

  • Use a sharp, clean bit and remove pitch or residue that interferes with cutting.
  • Secure the workpiece so it cannot shift during the pass.
  • Make conservative passes rather than forcing a large amount of material through the cutter at once.
  • Support the router base fully, particularly on narrow stock and around assembled boxes.
  • Use a scrap test to verify both height and grain behavior.
  • Pay special attention to corners and end grain, where the cutting situation changes and chip-out is more likely.
  • Use a sacrificial backer or auxiliary support when appropriate, particularly on small frames or assembled parts.

Do not use a universal RPM or feed-rate rule. The appropriate operating range depends on the specific bit diameter, router, material, and manufacturer’s instructions. Excessive speed, an overly aggressive pass, or pushing too slowly can all produce poor results or unsafe cutting conditions.

Safety checklist

Before routing:

  • Wear eye protection against chips and debris.
  • Use suitable dust protection and dust collection for the material and operation.
  • Use hearing protection when noise exposure is loud or prolonged.
  • Clamp or otherwise secure the workpiece.
  • Keep hands away from the cutter and never route a small part in a way that puts fingers close to the bit.
  • Disconnect power before changing the bit, bearing, or setup.
  • Keep the router base stable and maintain a balanced stance.

These are general precautions, not a replacement for reading the specific router, bit, and router-table manuals. Model-specific instructions take priority.

Common beginner mistakes

Buying by diameter instead of radius

The product’s overall cutter diameter may be prominently displayed, but the round-over name refers to the radius. Compare the radius field with the project requirement.

Ignoring shank compatibility

A bit that looks suitable is unusable if its shank does not match the router collet. This is particularly important when comparing compact routers with full-size models.

Skipping the scrap test

An incorrect height produces either an incomplete curve or an unintended ridge. A scrap cut takes little time and prevents an avoidable mistake on a finished board.

Letting the router tip

An unstable base can create a divot or an uneven transition. Use the workpiece, surrounding box surfaces, or an auxiliary support to keep the base stable.

Assuming the alternate bearing solves setup problems

A smaller bearing can change a round-over cutter into a beading setup with a shoulder or flat. It does not eliminate the need to set the height, confirm the edge orientation, test on scrap, and support the workpiece.

Useful applications beyond basic edge easing

Round-over bits are commonly used on furniture edges, shelves, tabletops, drawer parts, box components, trim, and other pieces where a sharp corner should be softened.

MNA Router Bits 35 Pcs Set | 35 Pieces 1/4 Inch Shank Router Bit Kit. American Router Bit Set Complete Set.
  • Bits Precisely match the requirement of the American dimension and standard.
  • American industry classification C3 Carbide. Provide superior wear resistance and sharp edges for the best finish.
  • MNA 35-piece set is a complete set for the professional woodworker. It has a great variety of the most popular carbide-tipped bits in a professional aluminum storage case.
  • Fit for all types of wood material, such as MDF, Hardwood, Softwood, and Particle Board.
  • Universal 1/4” shank is compatible with all major router instrument (either handheld or benchtop router table) such as MNA, Kowood, Bosch, DeWalt, Makita, Tooldo, Milwaukee, Porter & Cable, Skil, Ryobi, Black & Decker

In a specialized setup, a round-over bit can also produce a dowel from a square blank. For example, a 3/8-inch-radius bit can be used on a 3/4-inch square blank—because the radius is half the blank’s width—by routing each face in turn. This is an advanced application, not the place to begin learning the bit. It requires accurately prepared stock, a carefully tested setup, attention to start-and-stop marks, and a method for keeping the ends square during routing.

What else might you need?

  • One compatible round-over bit: the minimum useful purchase when the required radius is known.
  • Additional bearings: useful for specialty profiles such as beading, provided the bearing and cutter combination is approved for that bit.
  • A compatible palm or fixed-base router: necessary if you do not already own a router. Palm routers are suitable for many edge applications, but do not replace a functioning router merely to use a round-over bit.
  • A router table: worth considering for many repeated, long, narrow, or small parts; it is not required for occasional edge work.
  • Featherboards and dust collection: optional router-table accessories that can improve control and cleanliness when correctly installed.
  • Protective equipment: eye, hearing, and suitable dust protection should be treated as operating essentials, not decorative add-ons.

Bottom line

Choose a round-over bit by radius first, then confirm that its shank fits your router and that the stock has enough material for the intended curve. Install it only with the router disconnected, set the height with a scrap test, and keep the base and workpiece stable. A 1/8-inch bit gives a subtle edge break, 1/4 inch is a versatile starting point, and larger radii are appropriate when the drawing, stock thickness, and design call for a more pronounced profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a round-over bit size the radius or the diameter?

The stated size is the cutting radius. A 1/4-inch round-over bit is intended to leave a 1/4-inch radius, while its overall cutter diameter is larger.

What does the bearing do on a round-over bit?

A bearing-guided bit uses a pilot bearing against the workpiece edge to control the cutter’s horizontal position. The cutter geometry determines the nominal radius; the bearing determines where that geometry meets the edge.

What is the most useful round-over bit size?

A 1/8-inch bit makes a subtle edge break, 1/4 inch is a versatile general-purpose choice, and 3/8- or 1/2-inch bits create more obvious curves. Follow the project drawing when one specifies a radius.

Do I need a router table to use a round-over bit?

No. A router table is helpful for long, narrow, small, or repetitive parts, but a handheld router is sufficient for many panels, boxes, and furniture edges when the base is fully supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I use a round-over bit safely?

Disconnect power, inspect the cutter and bearing, secure the workpiece, wear eye and suitable dust protection, keep hands away from the cutter, and test the setup on scrap before routing the finished part.

The Bottom Line

The short answer: a round-over bit’s named size is its radius, not its overall diameter. Match that radius to the plans and stock, verify the shank fits your router, test the height on scrap, and route only with a stable base, secured workpiece, and appropriate protection.
