Roomba Testers Felt Misled After Intimate Images Reached Online Groups

MIT Technology Review reported in January 2023 that images captured by camera-equipped iRobot development robots were viewed by outside annotators and that at least 15 screenshots later circulated in online groups used by workers to discuss their jobs. The images included intimate household scenes, including a minor and a person using a toilet.

The documented participants were paid data collectors, test participants, and iRobot employees—not evidence that ordinary retail Roomba customers’ images were exposed. The dispute was whether broad consent language adequately explained human review, international contractors, screenshot risks, and vendor oversight.

What happened

Between 2019 and 2022, iRobot collected data from development or testing robots equipped with front-facing cameras. In the workflow described by MIT Technology Review, robots captured images inside participants’ homes, iRobot sent data to an outside annotation company, and contractors labeled objects and scenes to improve computer-vision systems.

Human annotators could see the raw images while doing that work. In a 2020 project, workers in Venezuela shared at least 15 screenshots in online groups. The reported images included highly private domestic scenes. “Ended up on Facebook” is shorthand for this online circulation; the reporting does not establish that iRobot itself publicly posted the images or that the event was a system hack.

iRobot Roomba 105X Robot Vacuum, Smart LiDAR Mapping, 70X Power‑Lifting Suction, Custom Room Cleaning, App & Voice Control, Auto Recharge, Great for Homes with Pets & Kids
  • POWERFUL CLEANING YOU CAN SEE—AND FEEL. The Roomba 105X devours dirt with 70X more power‑lifting suction* to pull embedded dust, crumbs, and pet hair from carpets and hard floors. .*Compared to Roomba 600 series robots.
  • 3‑STAGE CLEANING SYSTEM. Combines intense suction, a Multi‑Surface brush, and an Edge‑Sweeping brush to leave floors truly barefoot‑clean—not just surface tidy.
  • SMART LIDAR MAPPING = NO MISSED ROOMS. ClearView LiDAR maps your home quickly and cleans in neat, efficient rows, delivering consistent coverage instead of random paths.
  • CONFIDENT CLEANING, DAY OR NIGHT. Avoids furniture, cords, and everyday obstacles—even in low light—so cleaning continues smoothly without getting stuck.
  • CUSTOM ROOM‑BY‑ROOM CLEANING. Schedule cleans, target high‑traffic areas, adjust suction, and add extra passes where messes build up.

After MIT Technology Review asked iRobot about the screenshots, iRobot said it terminated its contract with Scale AI. The company also said it notified people whose images appeared in the identified set, although the reporting did not establish whether everyone whose data entered the wider collection program was notified.

Who was affected—and who was not shown to be affected

  • Test participants and paid data collectors: People allowed development robots to operate in their homes and received compensation such as gift cards. Interviewed testers described payments ranging from $30 to $120, depending on the assignment.
  • iRobot employees: iRobot said employees also participated in development-data collection.
  • Third-party annotators: Contractors working through data-labeling companies, including Scale AI, reviewed and labeled images.
  • Ordinary retail customers: The reporting did not establish that commercially purchased Roomba customers’ images were among the exposed screenshots.

This distinction matters. A development tester is not automatically the same as a retail customer, although some testers later bought the product. It would be inaccurate to describe the episode simply as “Roomba owners’ private images being leaked.”

How the image pipeline worked

The reported data path can be summarized as:

home test participant → camera-equipped development robot → iRobot or intermediary → Scale AI → international annotator → screenshot shared in work-related online groups

Object-recognition systems need examples of real-world scenes to learn the difference between objects such as furniture, cords, shoes, and obstacles. That explains why iRobot said the images were needed to improve recognition systems. It does not, by itself, answer whether every person depicted understood that an outside human worker might inspect the image.

What the testing agreements reportedly covered

The documents described in the reporting included a general Betabound agreement, a global test agreement for development robots, nondisclosure and participation agreements, and product-loan or test-specific documents.

The global testing language reportedly allowed text, video, images, or audio to be used for purposes including:

  • statistical and usage analysis;
  • diagnosing technology problems;
  • improving product performance;
  • product and feature innovation;
  • market research;
  • trade presentations;
  • internal training; and
  • machine learning and object detection.

iRobot said participants had consented, that the agreements warned images and video could be captured during cleaning jobs, and that participants were encouraged to remove sensitive objects and people—including children—from areas where the robot operated.

The testers’ objection was not necessarily that the paperwork said nothing about image use. Rather, testers said the language did not make the practical process sufficiently clear: outside human annotators could view raw images, those workers could be located internationally, and a worker could screenshot and circulate material.

Why testers felt misled

“Used for machine learning” can sound like an automated process. A reasonable participant may not understand that training data can pass through human reviewers who inspect private interiors and label what they see.

  • EVERY CLEAN STARTS WITH A FRESH MOP—NOT YESTERDAY’S DIRT. The AutoWash Dock washes and heat‑dries mop pads at 113°F after every run, preventing odors and buildup so floors aren’t cleaned with yesterday’s dirt.
  • Who can access the images?
  • Which vendors and subcontractors are involved?
  • Where are those workers located?
  • Can images be downloaded, copied, or screenshotted?
  • How long are raw images retained?
  • Are faces, children, nudity, bathrooms, or other sensitive scenes filtered before review?
  • Is access logged and audited?
  • What happens when a contractor misuses the data?
  • Will everyone potentially affected be notified?

The testing agreements reportedly said vendors would be vetted, required to maintain confidentiality, and governed by data-processing agreements. Testers questioned whether the circulation of screenshots demonstrated that those safeguards had failed in practice. They also argued that iRobot’s confidentiality expectations for participants did not resolve the company’s separate duty to protect the data it collected from them.

iRobot’s position

According to the reporting, iRobot maintained that:

  • participants had consented to the collection and use of the data;
  • the people involved were paid data collectors or employees, not ordinary customers;
  • the agreements acknowledged that images and video could be captured;
  • participants were told to remove sensitive material from the robot’s operating area;
  • the broad agreement covered a range of testing scenarios; and
  • image access was necessary to improve object-recognition systems.

Those statements establish iRobot’s interpretation of the agreements and program. They do not independently establish that consent was sufficiently informed. Consent existed and consent was adequately informed are different claims.

Was it legally a privacy violation?

The available reporting does not establish a court or regulator finding that iRobot violated a specific law. Testers and privacy advocates, including the Electronic Privacy Information Center, raised questions about disclosure, deception, confidentiality, vendor supervision, and data-protection obligations.

A signed form does not automatically settle whether consent was specific, understandable, freely given, or consistent with the company’s promises. The documented facts support describing the episode as a serious privacy and governance failure allegation—not as proven legal liability under every jurisdiction.

The deeper accountability problem

Scale AI workers shared the screenshots, but treating Scale AI as the only responsible party would miss the larger chain of accountability. iRobot collected the data, designed or approved the testing workflow, selected or used vendors, defined the permitted purposes, and had to communicate the risks to participants.

The public reporting establishes the contractor chain and the contract termination, but does not answer every operational question. It does not establish whether images were automatically filtered, whether screenshot prevention or watermarking was used, how access was logged, how often vendors were audited, or how quickly iRobot learned of the sharing.

A stronger privacy program for this type of data would consider on-device processing, automatic blurring, removal of sensitive scenes, human review only when necessary, short retention periods, tightly restricted access, technical controls against copying, assignment-specific consent, and prompt notice to everyone potentially affected. These are safeguards to assess—not documented facts about the historical program.

What current Roomba users should know

Current consumer controls should be considered separately from the 2019–2022 development-testing program. iRobot’s current support material describes an optional Obstacle Image Review feature and says that images are encrypted, normally viewable through the user’s app, and inaccessible to iRobot unless the user contributes them to an image database. It also says non-contributed images are automatically deleted from iRobot’s servers after 30 days.

iRobot lists camera-equipped families including J5/J6/J7/J8/J9, 10 Max, Plus 505/575, and Max 705 series on its support page. Model support can change, so users should check the current documentation for their specific robot.

To review the Obstacle Image Review setting, iRobot gives this path:

iRobot HOME App → three horizontal lines → Account → Privacy → Map Features → select your robot → Obstacle Image Review

iRobot says obstacle avoidance can continue when the review feature is disabled, although users lose the ability to submit feedback that may improve future behavior. The company’s support description is not a complete guarantee about every type of image processing: it contains an exception for images contributed to the database, and iRobot’s privacy policy separately discusses service providers and data processing.

The broader lesson

The Roomba episode was not simply a story about whether a robot vacuum has a camera. It was a story about the entire data supply chain behind a camera-equipped household device: collection, transfer, annotation, worker access, copying controls, retention, notification, and vendor oversight.

When a device can see inside a home, privacy depends not only on the device’s security or a checkbox in an app. It also depends on whether people understand who may see the data, whether contractors are effectively controlled, and whether the company remains accountable when those controls fail.
