Choose a robotic plotter when the deliverable is a physical line or point mark; choose a total station when the deliverable is a measured coordinate, stakeout observation, grade check, or broader survey and machine-control data. The systems are not direct substitutes. A plotter automates applying marks from design data, while a total station measures and positions coordinates. A robotic total station adds automatic target tracking and remote operation. On some projects they can be used together: Tyker describes its Robot Plotter as controllable by GNSS or a total station, including work where GNSS reception is unavailable.

What each system delivers on a road project

Robotic plotter: a physical mark on the work surface

A robotic plotter receives prepared design geometry and drives to the required locations while applying a visible mark. The immediate output is something a crew can see on the ground: a point, a line, or a guidance pattern. Tyker lists road-construction point marking and guidance-line setting among its applications. Its product information identifies DXF files for linework and CSV files for points.

This makes a plotter a layout-production tool. It does not, by itself, replace the survey work needed to establish project control, check existing conditions, or validate that the design has been localized correctly. The plotted result is only as reliable as the coordinate system, source file, positioning method, and verification procedure behind it.

Total station: measured coordinates and setout control

A total station measures angles and distances to determine the position of a prism or another target. In road construction it can stake out design coordinates, observe as-built positions, check elevations and alignments, and supply data to other civil workflows. Trimble lists applications across excavation, grading, compaction, milling, paving, site positioning, stakeout, and measurement, with the exact functions depending on the model and field software.

A robotic total station adds automatic target tracking and remote control. The Federal Highway Administration describes the arrangement as an instrument that tracks a target automatically and is controlled remotely, commonly through a data collector carried with the target. That can allow one person to perform layout that would otherwise require an instrument operator and a rod person, provided the site control, line of sight, communications, and safety plan support it.

Where the tools fit in road setout

Decision axis Robotic plotter Total station What the project team must verify
Main output Physical point marks and lines applied from digital design data. Measured positions, stakeout coordinates, observations, and potentially data for other civil workflows. Whether the crew needs a visible mark, a survey observation, grade information, or machine-control input.
Typical road role Point marking and guidance-line setting. Excavation, grading, compaction, milling, paving, positioning, stakeout, and measurement; capabilities vary by model. Confirm the exact instrument, controller, software, and licensed functions.
Positioning Tyker lists integrated GNSS or total-station control. Uses a surveyed setup and target; robotic versions track the target and can be operated remotely. Control network, localization, line of sight, GNSS reception, communications, and project tolerances.
Digital inputs and outputs DXF line files and CSV point files are listed by Tyker. Model-specific design, coordinate, observation, and machine-workflow data. File formats, units, coordinate reference, revisions, field software, and a check against the issued design.
Field productivity Tyker states plotting up to 5 km/h or 300 points per hour. Robotic total stations are intended to support one-person layout workflows. Treat these as manufacturer specifications or claims, not guaranteed production rates on every road site.

How a robotic plotter is used for road setout

1. Prepare and validate the design file

Export the linework and points needed for the day’s work from the approved design. Tyker identifies DXF for lines and CSV for points. Before loading either file, confirm the coordinate reference system, units, layer or point naming, line direction where it matters, and revision status. A drawing that opens correctly can still be shifted if it uses a different origin, grid, datum, or unit convention from the site control.

2. Establish positioning and site control

The plotter may be positioned using GNSS or controlled by a total station, according to Tyker’s product information. Set control points that are protected from plant, traffic, excavation, and stockpiles. Check the initial position against an independent known point or a second check point before plotting production marks. If the project uses a local site calibration, document the transformation and who approved it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Choose the marking method for the surface

Tyker describes paint and chalk applications on grass, rubble bases, sand, asphalt, and concrete. It also describes a drilling module for durable point marks where paint or chalk is unsuitable. The correct choice depends on surface condition, required visibility, expected traffic, environmental controls, and the project’s safety plan. Compatibility of a particular paint or spray-can module must be confirmed for the selected machine; no universal consumable fit should be assumed.

4. Plot a controlled trial

Start with a small group of points or a short line near a known control location. Measure or otherwise verify those marks before releasing the machine to the full area. A trial catches wrong units, an inverted axis, a stale design revision, an incorrect localization, and obstructions that would cause the machine to deviate.

5. Run the marking operation

Keep pedestrians, vehicles, and plant outside the machine’s operating envelope. Monitor the plotter’s position, battery state, consumable flow, and communications. Pause at crossings, haul routes, blind corners, and any point where the planned path conflicts with active work. Record the file revision, positioning method, start and finish time, operator, and any skipped or manually completed points.

6. Verify and hand over

Check representative marks with an independent measurement method, particularly at alignment changes, tie-ins, curves, and transitions between surfaces. Photograph or record points that will be covered quickly. A plotted line is not evidence that the underlying design or control was correct; the verification record is what makes the layout auditable.

How a total station is used for road setout

1. Confirm the control network and localization

Use the project’s approved control points and coordinate system. The FHWA highway-construction guidance emphasizes site calibration or localization as part of robotic-total-station work. Setups should be checked against more than one known point where the project procedure requires it, and the residuals or other quality indicators should be reviewed before staking out production points.

2. Set up with a clear line of sight

Center and level the instrument over the occupied point, enter the instrument and prism information required by the controller, and establish the backsight or resection according to the survey method. A robotic instrument still needs an unobstructed optical path to its target. Dust, traffic, earthmoving equipment, vegetation, heat shimmer, and a prism hidden behind a machine can interrupt tracking or introduce a bad observation.

3. Load and check the design data

Import the approved alignment, surface, point, or machine-workflow data into the field software. Check units, coordinate reference, point codes, stationing, offsets, and design revision. Select a known point that is not part of the active stakeout and verify that the controller reports the expected coordinate and elevation.

4. Stake out or measure the required feature

For a point stakeout, the controller guides the target holder to the design coordinate and reports the remaining horizontal and vertical differences. For a line, alignment, grade, milling, or paving task, use the model-specific function intended for that operation. Save the observation or stakeout record rather than relying only on a mark in the ground.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Apply and identify the physical mark

A total station generally tells the crew where the point is; a person then places a stake, nail, paint mark, offset, or other approved indicator. Label the mark so the construction crew can distinguish centerline, edge, grade, offset, and temporary control. Where the mark will be destroyed by excavation or traffic, set offset references and document them before leaving the setup.

6. Perform independent checks

Reoccupy or check selected points from a different setup, backsight, or known control point when the project quality plan calls for it. Check critical tie-ins, superelevation transitions, drainage structures, and limits of pavement separately. Instrument catalog accuracy does not remove the need to control setup, prism constant, atmospheric conditions, and localization quality.

Accuracy: why the published numbers are not interchangeable

Tyker states 1–2 cm accuracy for its Robot Plotter. Trimble publishes angular and model-specific accuracy values for total stations. These are different measurements. A plotter’s figure is presented as a placement accuracy, while a total station’s value is commonly an angular accuracy or a model-specific vertical and horizontal specification. They cannot be treated as a head-to-head roadsite test or converted directly into the same tolerance.

Equipment or series Published figure How to interpret it
Tyker Robot Plotter 1–2 cm stated accuracy Manufacturer-stated plotter accuracy; the product page does not state a publication year. Confirm the conditions, positioning method, surface, and verification procedure for the configuration being purchased.
Trimble RTS series 1-inch or 3-inch angular-accuracy variants Series variants, not a generic specification for every total station. Angular accuracy is not the same as plot-placement tolerance.
Trimble SPS930 0.5-inch vertical and horizontal Named-model specification; configuration and measurement conditions still matter.
Trimble SPS730 3-inch horizontal and 2-inch vertical Named-model specification, not a claim for other models.
Trimble SPS720 3-inch horizontal and 2-inch vertical Named-model specification, subject to setup and configuration.
Trimble SPS620 5-inch vertical and horizontal Named-model specification, not a universal total-station accuracy.

For a road project, specify the required tolerance for each deliverable first: centerline, edge of pavement, drainage invert, subgrade elevation, milling depth, or machine-control surface. Then ask the supplier to demonstrate that the complete workflow—control, localization, instrument or plotter, target, file conversion, and verification—meets that tolerance. Do not select equipment solely from the largest accuracy number in a brochure.

Digital workflow and revision control

Plotter files

DXF and CSV support is useful only if the export convention is controlled. A project team should define whether coordinates are in metres or another unit, how northing and easting are ordered, which layers are plotter-visible, how curves are tessellated, and how point descriptions are encoded. Keep the issued file with the field record so a later crew can identify exactly what was plotted.

Total-station data

Total-station workflows may include design surfaces, alignments, stakeout lists, observations, and machine-control exchanges. The controller and office software must agree on datum, projection, geoid or height basis, units, and naming. Exporting a point list without its coordinate metadata is not a complete handover.

Common data failures

  • A local grid is loaded into a global project, shifting every mark by a consistent amount.
  • A file uses millimetres while the field software expects metres.
  • A revised alignment retains old point names, causing the operator to select superseded geometry.
  • Curved road geometry is approximated differently in the CAD export and the field software.
  • Vertical datum or geoid settings differ between the design and field controller.

Prevent these failures with a documented export template, a file checksum or revision identifier, a known-point check, and a sign-off before production layout.

When using both systems is the better choice

A plotter and total station can be complementary. Tyker states that its Robot Plotter can be controlled by a total station and describes that option as useful where GNSS reception is unavailable. In such a configuration, the total station supplies the position reference while the plotter applies the physical mark. This is a manufacturer-described option, not proof that every plotter, total station, controller, or software combination is interchangeable.

A practical combined sequence

  1. Establish and check road-site control with the project’s approved survey method.
  2. Localize the total station and verify it on independent known points.
  3. Load the approved DXF or CSV design data into the plotter workflow.
  4. Connect the plotter to the compatible total-station control interface and confirm target tracking.
  5. Plot a short test line or several points, then compare them with an independent check.
  6. Run the production layout while recording interruptions, skipped points, and file revision.
  7. Recheck critical points and archive the control, design, and verification records.

This arrangement is particularly relevant in built-up corridors, under structures, near tall cuttings, or anywhere GNSS reception is obstructed. It still requires line of sight to the target and a stable instrument setup.

Productivity, crew, and logistics

Factor Robotic plotter information Total-station consideration
Stated speed or rate Up to 5 km/h plotting or 300 points per hour, according to Tyker. No single road-production rate is established; rate depends on setup changes, point density, visibility, and the task.
Battery Tyker states 8 hours of battery life with a replaceable battery. Plan instrument, controller, target, and radio power separately; actual endurance depends on the equipment configuration.
Weight Tyker lists a 21 kg base weight. Account for tripod, prism, controller, batteries, and transport between setups.
Crew model Automated marking can reduce manual walking between points, but an operator and a site safety arrangement are still required. Robotic total stations can support one-person layout, subject to tracking, communications, and site conditions.
Consumables Paint and a spray-can module are listed; chalk and a drilling module are also described for different surfaces or durability needs. Physical stakes, nails, paint, offsets, or other approved markers are applied by the field crew.

Use the published rates for planning and supplier discussions, not as a promise of output. Road work loses time to traffic control, moving plant, access restrictions, surface cleaning, control checks, file changes, and rework. Measure actual production on the intended site before basing a labor or schedule commitment on a brochure figure.

Choosing between a plotter, a total station, or both

Choose a robotic plotter when

  • The main deliverable is a large number of visible points or continuous guidance lines.
  • The design is already prepared in a compatible digital format.
  • The crew benefits from automated marking over long runs or repeated point sets.
  • Paint, chalk, or drilled marks are acceptable for the surface and construction stage.
  • The team can establish reliable GNSS or total-station control and verify the output.

Choose a total station when

  • You need measured coordinates, elevations, as-built observations, or stakeout records rather than marks alone.
  • The work spans excavation, grading, compaction, milling, paving, positioning, and measurement tasks.
  • Linework changes frequently and the crew needs to interrogate the model at arbitrary locations.
  • Critical tolerances require a documented observation and independent check.
  • GNSS is obstructed but a stable line of sight and control network can be maintained.

Use both when

  • The project needs rapid physical marking plus survey-grade control and verification.
  • A total station can provide the plotter’s positioning in a GNSS-denied area.
  • Different crews need marks for construction and coordinate records for quality control.

Buyer and deployment checklist

  • Deliverable: List every mark, line, coordinate, elevation, and record the crew must produce.
  • Tolerance: Define tolerances by feature and construction stage; do not use one generic accuracy target.
  • Control: Confirm control monuments, localization method, check points, and protection from site activity.
  • Data: Verify DXF, CSV, surface, alignment, and observation compatibility, including units and coordinate metadata.
  • Positioning: Test GNSS reception, radio range, total-station line of sight, and target tracking in the actual corridor.
  • Surface: Confirm that paint, chalk, or drilling is suitable for grass, rubble bases, sand, asphalt, concrete, or the project’s actual surface.
  • Durability: Decide whether temporary visual marks or drilled points are needed and obtain approval for the method.
  • Power: Plan charging, spare or replaceable batteries, and a safe storage method for the workday.
  • Training: Require operators to demonstrate setup, localization, file loading, pause and recovery, and independent verification.
  • Records: Retain file revision, setup coordinates, checks, rejected points, consumable batch if required, and handover evidence.
  • Support: Verify regional service, training, spare parts, software licensing, and the supplier’s response time before purchase.

Troubleshooting common roadsite failures

Every mark is shifted by the same amount

Stop production and check the coordinate reference, units, occupied point, backsight, localization, and file revision. A consistent shift usually indicates a control or transformation problem rather than random machine motion. Re-establish the setup and recheck a known point before remaking any production marks.

Only some points are wrong

Inspect the source geometry, point descriptions, duplicate names, curve export, and whether the affected points belong to a different revision or layer. Compare the field file with the approved drawing and test the same points from an independent setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The robotic total station loses the target

Look for obstructions, dust, traffic, heat shimmer, a poorly oriented prism, radio dropouts, and excessive range. Move the setup or target to restore line of sight, then repeat the observation and document the interruption. Do not accept a point based on an unverified reacquisition.

The plotter stops or leaves an incomplete line

Check battery state, consumable flow, wheel traction, surface debris, geofence or path obstacles, and communications. Mark the last completed point, save the run record, and restart from a verified point rather than assuming the machine resumed exactly where it stopped.

Marks are not visible or do not last

Review surface preparation, paint or chalk selection, weather, traffic, and the required life of the mark. If the project needs durable points, evaluate the described drilling option or an approved alternative, subject to engineering and safety approval.

Limits of the available specifications

The figures in this comparison are manufacturer-stated specifications or application claims. The available material does not provide an independent, controlled roadsite comparison between a robotic plotter and a total station, a named statistical study, live pricing, regional inventory, or a universal compatibility list for marking consumables. The product pages also do not state publication years for the quoted specifications. Treat the numbers as inputs to a site-specific trial and procurement review, not as guaranteed field performance.

A note on adjacent layout examples

HP SitePrint describes a construction-layout workflow using a 2D CAD file, a robotic total station, and control points. That example concerns floor layout, and its accuracy statement is configuration- and distance-specific. It should not be used as evidence of road-construction performance. Hilti’s PLT products are another example of one-person construction layout, but the cited information does not establish suitability for road setout; they should not be treated as equivalent road equipment without project-specific proof.
