Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 vs Pro: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upgrade to the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 if the original Pro has a practical limitation you notice every day. The Pro 2—now sold in the US as the Wired Doorbell Pro—adds a much taller field of view, 1536p HD+ video, HDR, color night vision, and 3D Motion Detection with Bird’s Eye View. But it remains a hardwired doorbell, and owners who already have good coverage and useful alerts may not gain enough to justify the cost of replacement.

The short answer

Upgrade from the original Ring Video Doorbell Pro to the Pro 2—now sold in the US as the Wired Doorbell Pro—if you have a real coverage, image-quality, or motion-alert problem. The newer model gives you a taller view for visitors and packages, higher-resolution 1536p HD+ video, HDR, color night vision, and 3D Motion Detection with Bird’s Eye View. Those changes can matter at an entrance where the older Pro cuts off the lower part of the frame or produces too many unhelpful alerts.

If your original Pro already shows the full porch clearly, records enough detail, and sends useful alerts, the upgrade is not essential—especially if replacing it would involve electrical work or the price difference is large.

Important naming clarification: Ring now calls the Pro 2 the Wired Doorbell Pro and labels it “formerly Video Doorbell Pro 2.” Ring says this is a name change, not a new generation: the features and performance remain unchanged.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 vs. Pro: the meaningful differences

Feature Original Video Doorbell Pro Pro 2 / Wired Doorbell Pro What it means at your door
Current status Discontinued Current product under the Wired Doorbell Pro name The renamed Pro 2 is the model Ring currently supports and markets as its wired Pro doorbell.
Video resolution 1080p HD 1536p HD+ with HDR More detail, particularly when identifying faces, clothing, labels, and activity near the threshold.
Field of view 160° horizontal × 90° vertical 150° horizontal × 150° vertical The Pro 2 trades a little horizontal width for a much taller frame, which is usually more useful for people and packages close to the door.
Night video Older-generation night-vision capability; regional Ring documentation varies in its wording Color night vision and HDR Better suited to mixed porch lighting and scenes where color or contrast helps identify a person or parcel.
Motion detection Advanced Motion Detection with customizable camera motion zones 3D Motion Detection with Bird’s Eye View, plus customizable motion controls More information about distance, angle, and movement path can make alerts easier to interpret and tune.
Power Wired Wired The Pro 2 is not a battery-powered replacement. You still need suitable doorbell wiring, a compatible adapter, or an appropriate transformer.
Wi-Fi 2.4GHz and 5GHz Use the current model’s specifications when checking your installation Do not assume the upgrade solves a weak Wi-Fi signal; network position and reliability still matter.

Why the Pro 2’s taller view may matter more than its extra pixels

Resolution gets most of the attention, but the field-of-view change is often the more noticeable upgrade. The original Pro’s 90-degree vertical view can leave the bottom of a porch outside the frame. That is a problem when a courier puts a package directly below the camera or when you want to see a visitor’s full body rather than only their head and shoulders.

The Pro 2’s 150-degree vertical view is designed to capture substantially more above and below the camera. It can make it easier to see:

  • Packages placed close to the threshold;
  • A visitor’s hands and the object they are carrying;
  • A person from head to toe;
  • Movement on steps immediately in front of the door; and
  • More of a narrow porch without relying entirely on a wide horizontal image.

This does not guarantee that every doorway will be perfectly framed. Mounting height, the door surround, a porch ceiling, nearby walls, and the approach path still determine what the camera sees. If the current Pro already covers the relevant area, the taller frame may not justify replacement by itself.

Video quality: 1080p versus 1536p HD+

The Pro 2 increases the documented resolution from 1080p to 1536p HD+ and adds HDR. In practical terms, that gives the camera more image information to work with when you view live video or review a saved event. The benefit is most apparent when the subject is not standing directly in front of the lens—such as a delivery worker at the edge of the porch, a package below the camera, or a face partly affected by backlighting.

Higher resolution is not the same as guaranteed identification. Lighting, motion blur, distance, lens cleanliness, compression, and the angle of the person’s face all remain important. If the original Pro’s footage is already clear enough for your entrance, the difference may be welcome rather than transformative.

Motion detection: better context, not a promise of zero false alerts

The original Pro has Advanced Motion Detection and customizable camera motion zones. Those controls can limit monitoring to the part of the property that matters, but the camera does not provide the same distance-and-path information as the newer model.

The Pro 2 adds 3D Motion Detection and Bird’s Eye View. Ring describes 3D Motion Detection as using distance and angle information to make motion detection more precise. Bird’s Eye View adds an aerial-style map of an event’s path, showing where movement began and how it approached the door.

  • Video Doorbell Camera for Complete Front Door and Entryway Protection: Monitor your front door with 2K video, person recognition, package detection, two-way audio, and IP65 weather resistance. Wired or wireless installation options.
  • Arlo Secure Early Warning System Unlocks Advanced Features: Get 60-day video history, AI detection, and emergency response. A paid plan is required after trial. Live streaming and basic alerts work without a subscription.
  • Smart Alerts That Keep You Informed: Get notifications for package and pet detection, along with person and vehicle recognition. Intelligent detection helps reduce false alerts and keeps you connected wherever you are.
  • Only Get Alerts That Matter: Set custom activity zones to monitor areas like your front door and pathway, and use privacy zones to block sensitive spaces while reducing unnecessary motion alerts for more meaningful notifications.
  • Flexible Power for Easy Installation: Choose a wire-free setup with a rechargeable doorbell or hardwire to existing wiring for trickle charging and uninterrupted security.

That extra context is particularly useful when a sidewalk, driveway, neighboring property, or public road sits within the camera’s view. You may be able to distinguish movement approaching the door from movement passing across the front of the property and adjust the system more intelligently.

However, these features should not be treated as an independently measured guarantee that false alerts will disappear. Animals, shadows, headlights, weather, unusual walking paths, and the physical layout of the entrance can still affect notifications. The upgrade is best described as a motion-precision and event-context improvement—not a complete solution to every alert problem.

Nighttime video: a useful upgrade in the right lighting conditions

The Pro 2 lists color night vision and HDR, while the older model belongs to an earlier 1080p generation whose regional Ring documentation is not entirely consistent about the precise night-vision description. The safe comparison is that the Pro 2 offers the newer image-processing and night-video specifications.

Color night vision and HDR may help when your porch has mixed lighting, a person is wearing colored clothing, or a parcel needs to be distinguished from the surrounding background. They are not a guarantee of bright, full-color footage in complete darkness. The amount and direction of available light still matter, and a strong light behind a visitor can make any doorbell camera struggle with facial detail.

Installation: the Pro 2 is still a hardwired doorbell

This is not a drop-in battery upgrade. Both the original Video Doorbell Pro and the Pro 2 are wired products. Ring says the current Wired Doorbell Pro can be powered by a standard doorbell system, a Ring Plug-In Adapter, or a suitable Ring hardwired transformer.

For the documented Pro and Wired Video Doorbell Pro requirements, Ring specifies a 16–24 VAC, 50/60Hz transformer rated at 10–40VA. Before buying a replacement, verify the transformer’s voltage and VA rating rather than assuming that any existing doorbell transformer is adequate. Turn off power before working on the wiring, follow local electrical requirements, and use a qualified electrician when the installation involves uncertain wiring, a new circuit, or work beyond a straightforward low-voltage replacement.

A Ring Plug-In Adapter may be the simpler option for a suitable home without usable existing doorbell wiring but with a nearby outlet. It still requires planning for cable routing, weather exposure, mounting position, and a safe connection. A compatible transformer is relevant when the existing unit is outside Ring’s documented range, but the correct replacement depends on the complete installation—not merely the doorbell model.

If the camera needs to look across a porch or walkway rather than straight ahead, a Ring Corner Kit can change the mounting angle. It changes the physical aim of the doorbell; it does not increase the camera’s resolution or add motion-detection capabilities.

Subscription costs and features

Do not confuse the doorbell’s built-in capabilities with account features that may depend on a Ring Protect plan. Ring’s current product information describes features such as saved video history and intelligent features in connection with Ring Protect. Plan names, inclusions, trial periods, and pricing can change, so check the current plan terms before purchasing.

In particular, do not assume that cloud recording, package-related features, or every intelligent-alert function is permanently free. The camera can provide live video and other core functions, but the exact ability to save and revisit events depends on the current Ring account and plan arrangement.

Who should upgrade to the Pro 2?

The upgrade is strongest when one of these describes your entrance:

  • Packages disappear below the frame. The taller 150-degree vertical view directly addresses a common limitation of the original Pro.
  • The original 1080p image is no longer detailed enough. The newer 1536p HD+ image and HDR may improve useful detail in faces, clothing, labels, and porch activity.
  • You receive too many alerts from a sidewalk or street. 3D Motion Detection and Bird’s Eye View add distance and movement-path context that the older model lacks.
  • Night footage is a recurring problem. Color night vision and HDR are relevant when lighting and scene detail are important.
  • You want the current wired Ring Pro product. The original Pro is discontinued, while the unchanged Pro 2 is now sold as the Wired Doorbell Pro.
  • You are already doing other entrance work. If a porch renovation, door replacement, or low-voltage upgrade is already planned, the installation cost may be easier to justify.

Who should keep the original Pro?

Keeping the older unit is sensible when it already does the job. Do not replace it merely because the newer product has a different name or a longer feature list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The current 1080p view includes the whole approach and the package-drop area.
  • Faces and parcels are sufficiently clear in the lighting you actually have.
  • Your existing motion zones produce useful alerts.
  • You do not need Bird’s Eye View, 3D Motion Detection, HDR, or color night vision.
  • The replacement would require costly transformer, wiring, mounting, or electrical work.
  • The available price is not attractive compared with the practical improvement at your particular door.

A practical upgrade checklist

  1. Look at your current recordings. Check whether the original Pro cuts off packages, hands, feet, or the lower half of visitors.
  2. Test the difficult lighting. Review daytime backlighting, dusk, porch-light scenes, and nighttime footage—not just an ideal sunny view.
  3. Identify the source of unwanted alerts. If movement from a road or sidewalk is the issue, the Pro 2’s distance and path information may help, but it cannot guarantee perfect filtering.
  4. Measure the proposed mounting area. Confirm that the taller view and mounting position work with trim, siding, a porch ceiling, and the door’s opening path.
  5. Check power before ordering. Verify the existing transformer against Ring’s 16–24 VAC, 50/60Hz, 10–40VA guidance, or plan for a suitable adapter or professional inspection.
  6. Compare the current product listing carefully. Search for both “Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2” and “Wired Doorbell Pro.” The latter is the current name for the same Pro 2 hardware, not a separate newer generation.
  7. Account for subscription requirements. Confirm which saved-video and intelligent features are included in the current Ring Protect plans.

Verdict: is the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 worth upgrading to?

Yes, when the original Pro has a visible weakness. The Pro 2’s 1536p HD+ video, HDR, color night vision, much taller field of view, and 3D motion features make it a meaningful improvement for entrances where packages or people are poorly framed, nighttime detail is inadequate, or alerts lack useful context.

No, not automatically. If your original Pro already covers the porch, produces adequate footage, and sends manageable alerts, the newer model may not change your day-to-day experience enough to justify replacement and possible electrical work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Wired Doorbell Pro a new generation after the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2?

No. Ring’s current US naming makes clear that Wired Doorbell Pro is the former Video Doorbell Pro 2. Ring describes the change as a rebrand, with no change to the device’s features or performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install the Ring Pro 2 using my existing doorbell wiring?

Not necessarily. Both are wired doorbells, and Ring documents a 16–24 VAC, 50/60Hz transformer rated at 10–40VA for the Pro and Wired Video Doorbell Pro. Turn off power, verify the existing system, follow local code, and use a qualified electrician when the wiring or transformer is uncertain.

Does the Pro 2 show packages better than the original Pro?

The Pro 2 has a 150° vertical field of view compared with 90° on the original Pro. That taller frame is particularly useful for seeing packages below the camera and more of a visitor’s body.

Does 3D Motion Detection eliminate false alerts?

No feature guarantees that every false alert will stop. The Pro 2’s 3D Motion Detection and Bird’s Eye View add distance, angle, and movement-path context, which may make alerts easier to tune and interpret.

Do I need a Ring Protect subscription for the Pro 2?

Check current Ring Protect terms. Saved video history and some intelligent features may depend on a subscription, and plan inclusions can change. Do not assume all recording or detection features are permanently free.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Pro 2—now called the Wired Doorbell Pro—is worth it for better package framing, higher-resolution video, improved nighttime specifications, and more detailed motion context. Keep the original Pro if its coverage and alerts are already satisfactory; the rebrand itself is not a reason to upgrade.
