You can add wireless music to most older stereo receivers without replacing the amplifier. The simplest setup uses an external Bluetooth audio receiver: connect its RCA outputs to an unused AUX, CD, TAPE, VIDEO, or other line-level input, power it, and pair your phone.
Signal path: Phone or computer → Bluetooth receiver → RCA cable → vintage receiver → speakers.

What you need
- A Bluetooth receiver with stereo RCA output—not a Bluetooth transmitter.
- An RCA stereo cable, usually red and white.
- The adapter’s supplied power cable or power adapter.
- An older receiver or integrated amplifier with an unused analog line input.
- A phone, tablet, or computer supporting standard Bluetooth stereo audio.
Check the product contents before buying. For example, the Audioengine B1 Next Gen includes an RCA cable, power supply, and setup guide.
Check whether your receiver is compatible
Turn the receiver off and inspect its rear panel. You need a pair of ordinary RCA audio inputs labeled:

- Listen music wireless: Connect with computer speakers, home stereo systems or other speaker systems via the 3.5 mm or RCA cable, then pair with the Bluetooth audio devices such as smartphones or tablet for streaming music.
- Easy setup and automatic reconnect: There is a big bluetooth symbol button in bluetooth receiver middle. Pair your bluetooth device to this adapter with a single button press. Click once means Bluetooth Connect/Disconnect. Hold the botton 3 second mean ON/OFF. It can reconnect automatically with the previously paired device.
- Wireless range: Indoors(without obstacles) connect rang up 30-40 ft (10-12 m).
- Works with most device: Bluetooth enabled device including smartphones, tablets, computers, laptops upon and any powered PC speakers, home stereo systems and A/V receivers.
- NOTE: This adapter doesn't have built-in battery, power by AC to DC power adapter or USB cable. This product is a bluetooth receiver ONLY, not a bluetooth transmitter. Only to give Bluetooth capabilities to an existing stereo / powered speaker / PA. If you have any problems, please contact us at any time by Amazon Order, and we will speed up the process to resolve the issue.
- AUX
- CD
- TAPE IN or TAPE PLAY
- LINE IN
- VIDEO or another unused line input
The label does not determine the source. A Bluetooth adapter connected to the receiver’s CD input will work even though it is not a CD player; simply select CD on the front panel.
| Connection | Use it? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| AUX, CD, LINE, VIDEO | Yes | Normal line-level inputs |
| TAPE IN or PLAY | Yes | Line-level playback input |
| PHONO | No | Uses sensitive phono gain and equalization |
| TAPE REC/OUT or LINE OUT | No | These are outputs, not inputs |
| Speaker terminals | Never | They carry amplified power and can damage the adapter |
If the receiver has only a 3.5-mm AUX input, use an RCA-to-3.5-mm cable or adapter. If it has no usable audio input, an external Bluetooth installation is not straightforward and may require specialist modification or replacement equipment.
Receiver versus transmitter: choose the right product
A Bluetooth receiver accepts music from your phone and sends analog audio into the stereo. A Bluetooth transmitter does the opposite: it sends audio from a television or stereo to Bluetooth headphones or speakers.

Product listings may support both functions, so look specifically for Bluetooth input, receiver mode, or A2DP sink. WiiM, for example, documents both receiver and transmitter operation, but only one Bluetooth audio connection is active in each direction at a time.
Choosing an adapter
Basic Bluetooth receiver
Best for occasional phone-to-stereo listening. Prioritize RCA output, dependable power, simple pairing, automatic reconnection, and manufacturer support. Bluetooth version numbers alone do not determine sound quality.
Premium Bluetooth receiver
The Audioengine B1 Next Gen provides RCA and optical outputs, Bluetooth 5.3, and support for aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX, AAC, and SBC. Audioengine lists a typical range of up to 100 feet/30 meters, but walls and interference can reduce real-world range. Its price was listed as $189 when checked; pricing and availability change.

Wi-Fi streamer with Bluetooth
A device such as the WiiM Mini can receive Bluetooth while also offering Wi-Fi streaming, app control, and network features. It lists analog and optical outputs, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0 with SBC/AAC support. It is a better long-term choice if you want multiroom audio, network playback, or fewer interruptions from phone calls and notifications. The trade-off is additional setup, software, and network dependence.
Transmitter/receiver combinations
These can be useful for multiple jobs, but they are more confusing to configure. Confirm that the unit has an input mode for receiving music from a phone before purchasing.
Install the Bluetooth adapter
- Turn off the receiver. Keep the initial wiring installation external; do not open a vintage receiver casually.
- Connect the RCA cable. Plug the adapter’s RCA outputs into the receiver’s RCA line-level inputs. Connect red to red/right and white or black to white/left.
- Connect power. Use the supplied adapter first. A USB socket may switch off in standby or introduce noise. The B1 Next Gen, for example, specifies 5 V and 200 mA power.
- Select the matching receiver input. If the cable is connected to AUX, select AUX; if it is connected to CD, select CD.
- Enter pairing mode. Many units do this automatically when first powered. Otherwise, press or hold the pairing button as described by the manufacturer.
- Pair your source. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or computer, select the adapter’s name, and confirm pairing. No special music app is normally required.
- Start playback. Use Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, a local music player, or another audio source.
- Set the levels. Keep the receiver volume low initially. Raise the phone to a moderately high level, then use the receiver’s master volume for normal listening.
- Test both channels. Confirm that left and right audio come from the correct speakers and that there is no severe hum, hiss, or distortion.
For the B1, the manufacturer’s quick-start guide says to select “Audioengine B1” in Bluetooth settings; its indicator becomes solid after connection.

- AUX 3.5mm/RCA audio receiver : There are 3.5mm or RCA output port for home old stereo speakers/wired headphones and more to connect mobile phones, computers, tablets to play music via Bluetooth. Turning ordinary audio equipment into Bluetooth devices and enjoying the music feast. (If the volume is too low, enable “Volume Sync” in your Bluetooth device settings.)
Place the adapter for reliable performance
- Keep it in open air rather than inside a metal cabinet.
- Separate it from the receiver’s transformer, power cables, and power supply.
- Avoid placing it immediately beside a Wi-Fi router or other busy 2.4-GHz devices.
- Keep the phone and adapter within practical range, especially through walls.
- Follow the manufacturer’s antenna-positioning guidance.
“Up to 100 feet” is a manufacturer-listed figure under suitable conditions, not a guaranteed indoor distance. Walls, furniture, interference, and the source device all matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bluetooth sound quality and codecs
Bluetooth audio quality depends on the source device, receiver, negotiated codec, music source, and the adapter’s digital-to-analog circuitry. Codec support is not a guarantee that a particular codec will be used.
Recommended Free Tools
- SBC: Broad compatibility and the standard fallback.
- AAC: Commonly relevant to Apple devices and supported by some receivers.
- aptX, aptX HD, and aptX Adaptive: Optional Qualcomm codec families requiring compatible equipment at both ends.
- aptX Low Latency: Designed for reduced delay, but only works when both source and receiver support the relevant mode.
- LDAC: Not universally supported and unnecessary for a basic installation.
Do not assume Bluetooth 5.3 automatically sounds better than Bluetooth 5.0, or that a product is universally lossless or CD-quality. A wired connection or Wi-Fi streamer may be preferable if uncompressed or high-resolution playback is the priority.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely causes | First fixes |
|---|---|---|
| No sound | Wrong input, incorrect cable direction, muted source | Select the input used; verify adapter outputs go to receiver inputs; check phone volume |
| Loud distortion | PHONO connection or excessive level | Move the cable to AUX/CD/LINE and reduce source volume |
| Very quiet sound | Low phone volume, damaged cable, unsuitable input | Raise phone volume moderately; test another cable and line input |
| Hum or buzzing | Power noise, cable problem, ground-loop interaction | Try another outlet or dedicated adapter, relocate the unit, and test another RCA cable |
| Dropouts | Distance, walls, 2.4-GHz interference | Move the phone and adapter closer; relocate the adapter; disconnect unused Bluetooth devices |
| Cannot pair | Already connected to another device | Turn Bluetooth off on the other device, force pairing mode, forget the adapter, and pair again |
| Video or gaming delay | Bluetooth latency | Use a wired connection, Wi-Fi streamer, or equipment with a compatible low-latency codec |
If there is no sound
Pairing success does not select the receiver’s input automatically. Check that the stereo is not still set to FM, another source, or a tape-monitor mode. Then verify that the adapter is powered, the plugs are fully inserted, and the phone is sending audio to the adapter rather than another speaker or headset.
If pairing fails
Move the source close to the adapter, power-cycle both devices, turn Bluetooth off and on, and remove the old pairing from the phone. Some adapters remember several devices but connect to only one at a time. The B1, for example, documents memory for up to six devices but only one active connection.
If there is hum
Disconnect other equipment temporarily, move the adapter away from the receiver’s transformer, try a different outlet and RCA cable, and check whether the noise remains with the phone disconnected. A ground-loop isolator can help in some installations, but identify the cause first because an isolator may affect level or frequency response.

Bluetooth is ideal when you want simple, direct streaming from a nearby phone or computer. Consider a Wi-Fi streamer when you want network playback, multiroom audio, app-based control, or fewer interruptions from calls and notifications. Use a wired 3.5-mm-to-RCA connection when the source device has an analog output and you want to avoid wireless latency and codec compression.
An internal Bluetooth modification can create a cleaner appearance, but it requires safe power integration and careful signal routing. Vintage equipment can contain hazardous voltages even when switched off, so internal work belongs with an experienced electronics technician.
