Reolink Video Doorbell (Battery) review: smart security without the subscription

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The original Reolink Video Doorbell (Battery), model D340B, is a strong choice for homeowners and renters who want local recording, person and package detection, and no mandatory monthly fee. Its compromise is fundamental: in normal battery operation it is an event camera, not a 24/7 recorder. You must recharge it, and the easiest local-storage option—the microSD card inside the doorbell—can disappear if the camera is stolen.

Buy it if low ongoing cost, flexible installation, and Reolink’s ecosystem matter more than instant notifications, effortless cloud backup, or polished third-party integrations. If you need continuous recording, choose Reolink’s wired Wi-Fi or PoE doorbell instead.

First, identify the model

This review covers the original Reolink Video Doorbell (Battery), commonly identified in Reolink documentation as D340B. It is not the newer Reolink Video Doorbell (2nd Gen), and it is not the wired Wi-Fi or PoE doorbell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction matters. Reolink’s current store presents several battery-doorbell products and bundles together, while the 2nd Gen is advertised with up to 300 days of battery life. That claim should not be transferred to the original D340B, whose 7,000mAh battery has no universal real-world runtime promise. Confirm the model and hardware revision before buying, especially if continuous recording or third-party integration is important.

What you get without paying monthly

The D340B can provide its core security functions without a compulsory subscription. You can record to a microSD card, a compatible Reolink Home Hub, or a Reolink NVR, then view local events through Reolink’s app. Motion detection, person and vehicle detection, package detection, visitor notifications, live view, push alerts, and two-way audio are part of the subscription-free local-use proposition.

Reolink’s US store listed the doorbell alone at $119.99 during August 2026, although prices and bundle contents can change. The store also listed a battery-doorbell/Home Hub Mini bundle at $152.99 and a Home Hub bundle at $229.99. Treat those as observed prices, not permanent pricing.

“Subscription-free” does not mean every feature is free or fully cloud-free. Reolink Cloud is optional where available, and Reolink’s support documentation identifies rich notifications—such as alerts containing richer preview information—as a cloud-related feature. Cloud recording and off-site backup can therefore add a recurring cost. The accurate description is subscription-free for core local use, not “all features without an account or cloud service.”

There is also a cost shift. You may need a surveillance-grade microSD card, an indoor Home Hub, an NVR, or your own FTP/NAS storage. Those are usually one-time or existing-system costs, but they still affect the total ownership decision.

Video quality: a useful square view

Specification Reolink Video Doorbell (Battery)
Resolution 2048 × 2048, 4MP
Frame rate 15fps
Field of view 150° horizontal, 150° vertical, 180° diagonal
Lens Fixed, f/1.8
Night vision Infrared
Compression H.264/H.265
Audio Two-way audio with noise reduction and echo suppression

The 1:1 image is more practical than a conventional widescreen view for a door. It gives visitors and parcels useful vertical coverage, helping show a person from head to toe and reducing the blind area immediately below the lens. The 150-degree horizontal view also covers a broad porch.

There are limits. At 15fps, motion should be adequate for ordinary visitors and deliveries, but this is not a high-frame-rate surveillance camera. A very wide lens can distort objects near the edges, and distant faces or license plates will be less legible than close-up subjects. The square 4MP specification is not the same as saying every scene will deliver forensic detail.

Independent hands-on coverage from Homes & Gardens described the daytime image as crisp but criticized lag and the app experience. That distinction is important: image quality can be adequate while the overall doorbell experience still feels slow when an alert arrives or live view opens.

Alerts and detection

The doorbell can distinguish several useful event types:

  • motion;
  • people;
  • vehicles;
  • packages; and
  • visitors pressing the doorbell.

Those categories are not interchangeable. A person detected near the porch has not necessarily pressed the button, and a delivery alert depends on the camera seeing and classifying the package. Passing cars, shadows, pets, rain, vegetation, and a busy apartment corridor can still create unwanted events. No supplied evidence supports a precise false-alert rate, so treat detection as a filter rather than a guarantee.

Two-way talk, alarm email, push notifications, and quick replies make the doorbell more useful for deliveries. The practical question is whether the notification arrives soon enough to answer. Battery-saving behavior, weak Wi-Fi, and app or server delay can all matter. If immediate conversation with a visitor is essential, the reported lag is a meaningful concern rather than a minor software complaint.

Battery life is a maintenance question

The D340B has a built-in 7,000mAh rechargeable battery and charges through USB-C. Reolink states that runtime varies with settings, usage, and temperature. There is no responsible single number that applies equally to a quiet suburban door and a busy apartment hallway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Runtime is affected by:

  • the number of daily detections;
  • recording length;
  • live-view frequency;
  • Wi-Fi signal strength;
  • infrared night vision;
  • audio and notification settings;
  • temperature; and
  • firmware and app behavior.

A lightly used front door may go for a long interval between charges. A high-traffic entrance or frequent live viewing can shorten that interval substantially. Cold weather can reduce effective battery performance even though Reolink lists an operating range of 14°F to 131°F.

Existing doorbell wiring can be connected, but Reolink describes this as primarily trickle-charging the internal battery. It should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a fully powered wired doorbell. The owner still needs to verify the exact model and power configuration.

Current Reolink documentation describes power-saving, smart, optimal-surveillance, and custom battery modes. In the documented app path, select the doorbell, tap the gear icon, choose Battery, then Battery Mode. Reolink says these controls require Reolink App version 4.51 or later, a compatible Home Hub or NVR, and current firmware. Labels can change with software updates, so the path should be treated as a current documented route rather than a permanent interface guarantee.

The decisive limitation: no ordinary 24/7 recording

In normal wireless battery operation, the D340B sleeps to conserve power and wakes when its PIR sensor detects activity or someone presses the button. It is therefore an event-based camera. Reolink’s store states that the battery doorbell does not support ordinary 24/7 continuous recording in this use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means it may not capture every second of an approach before a trigger. A person moving through an area outside the detection pattern, or an event that does not wake the camera, can be missed. This is the most important difference between this product and a wired security camera.

Reolink’s newer power-mode documentation discusses wired-mode continuous recording for the 2nd Gen and D340B (V2) in particular configurations, including restrictions when connected to an NVR or Home Hub. Do not apply that exception to every original D340B. Verify the hardware revision and exact connection setup before buying on the assumption that wiring will provide continuous recording.

Storage: local is better for control, not automatically safer

microSD in the doorbell

A microSD card is the simplest and lowest-cost option, with the original model supporting cards up to 256GB according to Reolink’s specifications. It keeps recordings on the device and avoids a mandatory cloud plan.

The weakness is physical. If a thief removes the doorbell, the card and its recordings may go with it. A microSD-only setup is convenient, but it is not a complete evidence-preservation strategy for a high-risk entrance.

Home Hub

A Reolink Home Hub stores footage indoors and is a better choice when theft resistance, multi-camera management, or third-party access matters. Current store bundles advertise Home Hub storage capacities up to 1TB; that is separate from the D340B’s own 256GB microSD limit.

NVR, FTP, or NAS

A compatible Reolink NVR suits a larger Reolink installation. FTP or NAS storage can work for technically capable users, but reliability depends on the external server, network, credentials, and configuration. Local storage also means taking responsibility for retention, overwriting, backups, and access.

For important footage, an indoor Home Hub, NVR, or secondary backup is more resilient than relying only on a card exposed at the front door. Local storage improves privacy and recurring cost; it does not protect recordings from theft unless the storage copy is somewhere else.

Home Assistant, RTSP, and ONVIF: read the qualification

Reolink’s general smart-home messaging can make the battery doorbell sound more open than it is. Current protocol documentation identifies the D340B as supporting CGI, RTSP, and ONVIF when connected to a compatible Reolink Home Hub. That is not the same as unrestricted standalone protocol access from the doorbell itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home Assistant’s Reolink integration documentation likewise notes that the battery doorbell requires a Reolink Home Hub series device. Buyers using Home Assistant, Frigate, Blue Iris, Synology Surveillance Station, or another local-video platform should budget for the hub and confirm compatibility with their exact hardware and firmware.

In short: third-party integration may be possible, but do not buy the D340B expecting the same independent RTSP or ONVIF behavior as a wired Reolink camera.

Installation and indoor alerts

The battery design is particularly attractive for renters, homes without usable wiring, and locations where running cable would be difficult. Installation is simpler than fitting a PoE doorbell, but wireless does not mean maintenance-free.

Rank #3

  • Capture it all with Retinal 4K video — From wide views to tighter focus, it’s easy to see your home or business in the ultimate clarity with Retinal 4K.
  • Zoom in up to 10x — Catch details at a distance, inspect faces, and more with up to 10x Enhanced Zoom.
  • True color, even in low light — Stay in color longer with Night Vision, and automatically switch to crisp black and white in total darkness.
  • Connect to who’s there — See, hear, and speak to who’s there with Live View & Two-Way Talk with Audio+.
  • Get precise alerts, not interruptions — Receive real-time phone alerts, delivered by radar-powered 3D Motion Detection.

Before mounting it permanently:

  1. Test Wi-Fi at the proposed mounting position. Weak signal can produce delayed alerts, slow live view, failed uploads, and greater battery drain.
  2. Check that the camera angle covers the visitor’s face and the package drop zone.
  3. Plan how you will remove the doorbell or access its USB-C charging port.
  4. Confirm whether your existing mechanical chime is compatible.
  5. Decide whether you need a Reolink Chime, Home Hub, Alexa device, or Google Assistant device for an indoor audible alert.
  6. Choose storage that will remain indoors if theft is a concern.

Do not assume an existing house chime will work simply because the doorbell is connected to doorbell wiring. Chime behavior depends on the wiring arrangement and compatibility of the exact equipment.

Privacy and security

The strongest privacy argument is that core recording can remain under your control rather than being automatically stored by a subscription cloud. The product supports local storage, while cloud services remain optional where available.

There are still important qualifications:

  • Remote access through the Reolink app may involve Reolink account and app infrastructure even when recordings are stored locally.
  • Cloud recording and rich notifications are separate choices with separate privacy and cost implications.
  • A microSD card can be removed with the camera.
  • Use a unique account password, keep firmware current, and enable available account-security protections such as two-factor authentication.
  • “Local storage” is not identical to a completely independent local network.

For privacy-conscious buyers, a Home Hub or NVR stored indoors offers a more robust balance: recordings remain locally managed while surviving removal of the camera.

Specifications and practical trade-offs

Reolink lists the original battery model with 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, IP65 weather resistance, 8–24V AC or 24V DC wired input, dimensions of 160 × 48 × 29.5mm, weight of 231g, and a two-year limited warranty. Its operating temperature is listed as 14°F to 131°F. IP65 is a rating, not a promise that every installation will withstand every exposure or poor mounting condition.

The combination of square 4MP video, broad coverage, smart detections, local storage, and flexible power makes the product unusually practical at its price. The combination of battery charging, event-only recording, possible notification lag, and hub requirements makes it less universally convenient than the headline “no subscription” suggests.

How it compares with the alternatives

Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi

The wired Wi-Fi model is the better Reolink choice if you have permanent power and need 24/7, motion-triggered, or scheduled recording. It also offers a stronger fit for standalone local integrations, including microSD, Home Hub, NVR, FTP/NAS, RTSP, and ONVIF. It is less suitable for renters or doors without wiring.

Reolink Video Doorbell PoE

The PoE option suits a new-build or serious wired installation where Ethernet reliability and NVR integration outweigh easy installation. It is not a quick wireless replacement.

Reolink Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)

The 2nd Gen is the relevant comparison for buyers who want Reolink’s newer battery hardware. Its advertised battery claim and power-mode behavior differ from the original. Compare exact storage, protocol, continuous-recording, and Home Hub requirements rather than assuming it is simply the same product with a newer label.

Ring

Ring is the more natural fit for buyers prioritizing a mature cloud-first notification ecosystem, broad accessories, and a familiar app. Its trade-off is greater reliance on a paid plan for useful recording and notification features. It is less attractive if avoiding recurring fees and keeping recordings local are the primary goals.

Google Nest Doorbell

Google Nest Doorbell makes more sense in a Google Home household, especially one using Nest displays. It is more cloud-oriented, so compare event history, subscription requirements, and power options rather than resolution alone.

Eufy and Aqara

Eufy Security offers local-storage-oriented alternatives, but HomeBase, subscription, and security features vary by model. Aqara can be the better fit for Apple Home, Matter, or a broader smart-home installation, depending on the exact doorbell. Neither brand should be judged from its general product line; compare the specific model’s storage and platform support.

Buy it if, skip it if

Buy the original Reolink Video Doorbell (Battery) if you:

  • want to avoid a compulsory monthly subscription;
  • prefer local recording;
  • need genuinely wireless installation;
  • can recharge the doorbell periodically;
  • want person, vehicle, package, and visitor detection;
  • already use Reolink cameras or plan to build a Reolink system; and
  • accept event-based rather than continuous recording.

Choose something else if you:

  • require 24/7 recording or reliable capture of every approach;
  • cannot regularly recharge a camera;
  • need guaranteed off-site backup after theft;
  • expect instant, highly polished notifications;
  • need standalone RTSP, ONVIF, or Home Assistant access;
  • do not want to manage storage; or
  • want a straightforward cloud-account experience with no hardware decisions.

If you already have wiring, the Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi is the more logical first choice for continuous surveillance. If you specifically want the original battery model, adding an indoor Home Hub is the most defensible upgrade for footage survivability and third-party integration.
