The machine may be using a deliberately slow cycle, detecting an unbalanced load, sitting unevenly, waiting for a closed lid or door, or refusing to spin because water has not drained. Start with those checks before buying parts.
Turn the washer off and unplug it before reaching into the tub, clearing debris, opening a filter panel, or removing a hose. If water remains inside, keep a shallow pan, bucket, and towels nearby. Washer designs vary considerably, so use the owner’s manual for your exact brand and model—especially before removing panels or accessing a pump.

First, identify what “won’t spin” means
Different symptoms point to different checks. Use this table to begin:

A washer may intentionally reduce or cancel high-speed spinning when it detects excessive vibration. That behavior protects the machine and prevents it from walking across the floor; it does not automatically mean the motor has failed. Manufacturer troubleshooting guidance consistently recommends checking the cycle, load, leveling, door or lid, and drain system before replacing parts. [C001][C002][C003][C004]

Safety and model information come first
- Switch the washer off and unplug it before opening a filter area, clearing a drain path, or putting your hands near the tub, wash plate, pump, belt, or motor.
- If there is standing water, expect it to spill when a filter or hose is opened. Use towels and a shallow pan or bucket.
- Do not bypass a lid switch or door-lock safety interlock.
- Do not remove covers or test energized electrical components unless you are qualified to do so.
- Find the complete model number, not just the brand name. It is usually on the door frame, lid area, rear panel, or a rating label. Error codes, filter locations, hose arrangements, and replacement parts are model-specific.
Front-load washers commonly have an accessible pump-filter service area. Many top-loaders do not, and their drainage and pump access can be completely different. A procedure that is correct for one model may damage another.
Work through these checks in order
1. Confirm the cycle and spin speed
Check the selected program before assuming something is broken. Delicate, hand-wash, bulky, and protective cycles may use a lower spin speed. Some programs limit or omit a high-speed spin to protect fabrics. A power interruption can also leave a load wet before the final spin is completed.
If your model provides it, select Drain & Spin, Spin Only, or a comparable cycle. The exact label and button sequence differ by model. Do not select a cycle the manual does not support.

2. Redistribute or reduce the load
Pause the washer and spread the clothing evenly around the basket. A single heavy item, comforter, blanket, rug, bathmat, or tightly packed load can collect on one side. The washer may then repeatedly try to rebalance the load, spin at a low speed, or cancel the final spin.
- Pause the cycle according to the washer’s instructions.
- Wait until the door or lid unlocks. Never force it.
- Untangle and redistribute the items.
- Remove some laundry if the tub is tightly packed.
- Restart a compatible rinse-and-spin or spin-only cycle.
For one large item, adding a compatible damp item can sometimes help balance the load, but the owner’s manual takes precedence. Do not overload the washer merely to add weight.
3. Check whether the washer rocks or is level
An unstable washer can vibrate violently, make loud noises, and stop before completing a high-speed spin. With the machine empty, push gently on diagonal corners. If the cabinet rocks, adjust the leveling feet using the model’s instructions and tighten the locknuts where applicable.

A small bubble level can help you check the top of the cabinet, although it is optional if you already own one. Leveling the machine does not compensate for a weak or flexible floor; floor movement can still contribute to vibration, particularly with front-load machines during high-speed spin.
If a front-loader was recently installed, verify that the shipping bolts and other packing materials were removed. Leaving shipping hardware in place can cause severe vibration and operating problems. [C002][C004][C006]
4. Check the lid, door, and latch area
Most washers will not spin unless the lid or door is fully closed and the machine recognizes the latch or switch. Close it firmly, then inspect the seal, strike, and latch area for clothing or debris caught in the way.
If a door or lid error appears, the latch looks damaged, or the machine behaves as though the door is open, do not tape, hold, or otherwise bypass the safety interlock. A defective lock or switch requires model-specific diagnosis and may require service.

5. Determine whether water remains in the tub
If water is still present, the washer may be refusing to spin because it has not completed draining. Do not start by assuming the belt or motor is defective.
With the washer unplugged, inspect the external drain hose for:
- a sharp kink or crushed section;
- a blockage at the hose end or standpipe;
- an incorrectly installed or positioned hose;
- an installation that pushes the hose too far into the drainpipe or prevents proper drainage.
Follow the installation instructions for your model before changing the hose position. If the hose is damaged, measure its length, diameter, connection style, and model requirements before ordering a washing machine drain hose. A so-called universal hose may not fit your washer or installation.
Excess detergent can also interfere with drainage. HE machines generally require HE detergent, and using too much detergent—or non-HE detergent—can create excessive suds. Suds may cause the washer to extend the cycle, drain poorly, or leave clothes wetter than expected. Use the quantity and detergent type specified for your machine.

6. Clean an accessible pump filter
Many front-load washers have a small service door near the lower front panel containing a drain hose and pump filter. Samsung and LG describe the filter as part of the drain path that should be checked when the washer cannot drain properly and therefore cannot complete its spin. Some models also recommend routine filter cleaning. [C003][C005]

Do not assume your washer has this filter or that the following procedure applies exactly. Check the owner’s manual first. Many top-load models have no user-accessible pump filter, and opening the wrong panel can create a leak or expose electrical components.
For a front-loader with a documented user-accessible filter:
- Turn the washer off and unplug it.
- Open the service flap described in the manual.
- Place a shallow pan and towels below the small emergency drain hose, if provided.
- Remove the hose cap and drain residual water slowly. If there is no service hose, follow the model’s manual rather than loosening the filter immediately.
- Once water has stopped, remove the pump filter as instructed.
- Clear lint, coins, buttons, and other debris. A soft-bristled brush and warm water may help clean the filter.
- Inspect the filter opening for visible debris without forcing anything deeper into the pump.
- Reinstall the filter securely and replace the drain-hose cap and service cover.
- Run the model-supported rinse-and-spin or drain-and-spin test and check for leaks.
A compatible washer pump filter may be useful if the existing filter is cracked, damaged, or missing, but match the exact model before ordering. A replacement filter is not a cure for a blocked hose, failed pump, or unrelated drive fault.
Optional items for this job include a shallow drain pan, absorbent towels, work gloves, a soft cleaning brush, and suitable pliers or tweezers for visible debris. These are conveniences, not universal requirements. Do not use a tool to reach blindly into a pump.
7. Look for foreign objects
Coins, keys, buttons, wires, zippers, and other objects can become trapped in the pump path, tub, or wash plate. They may cause rattling, grinding, a motor-lock error, poor drainage, or a tub that will not rotate.
After disconnecting power, remove only objects that are clearly visible and safely accessible with an appropriate tool. Stop if the object is behind a cover, the tub cannot rotate by hand without unusual resistance, or removing it would require disassembling the machine. Forcing the mechanism can damage the tub, pump, seal, or drive system.
8. Run a controlled test cycle
After correcting the load, leveling, drain hose, detergent issue, or accessible filter, run a model-supported test. Depending on the washer, this may be called Rinse & Spin, Drain & Spin, or Spin Only.

Some LG procedures use a rinse-and-spin cycle followed by a high-speed spin-only selection. Applicable Samsung models may use calibration or service checks. These button sequences are not universal, so use the exact owner’s manual for your machine. Observe whether the washer drains fully, accelerates smoothly, completes the cycle, and leaves the clothing normally damp rather than soaked. [C003][C005]
What if the basic checks do not work?
If the washer fills, agitates or tumbles, and drains but the basket never rotates, or if it hums, repeatedly stops, displays a motor-related error, or produces persistent grinding, burning, or electrical odors, an internal fault becomes more likely.

Possible causes include a motor, belt, clutch, rotor, bearing, drain pump, door or lid-lock assembly, wiring, or control problem. The symptom alone cannot reliably identify the failed part. For example, a washer that will not spin may have a drive problem, but it may also be refusing to spin because a latch signal or drain condition is missing. Samsung identifies a motor issue as one possibility when a washer does not spin at all, while LG directs users to service when basic checks do not resolve the problem. [C003][C008][C009]
Do not order a generic belt, pump, latch, or motor based only on the washer’s brand. Verify the full model number and confirm the part through the manufacturer or a model-specific parts lookup. Parts that look similar can have different electrical ratings, connectors, mounting points, or hose fittings.

Arrange professional or manufacturer-authorized service when:
- the washer still will not spin after checking the cycle, load, leveling, door or lid, and drain path;
- water cannot be removed safely;
- the machine leaks after a filter or hose has been checked;
- there is a burning, melting, or electrical smell;
- the door or lid safety latch is defective;
- an error code returns after the recommended reset or test;
- the basket will not rotate, or there is persistent grinding, scraping, or loud knocking;
- an internal pump, belt, motor, bearing, wiring, or control diagnosis is required;
- you are not comfortable draining a top-loader or accessing its components.
Unplug the washer and leave it out of service if it smells electrically burnt, sparks, trips a breaker, leaks near electrical components, or shows signs of overheating. Whirlpool similarly recommends professional help when a user is uncomfortable draining or troubleshooting the machine, particularly with top-load models that may not provide an accessible drain hose. Repair or replace?
A blocked filter, unbalanced load, incorrect detergent, or leveling problem is usually worth correcting. A damaged hose or accessible filter may also be a sensible repair when the washer is otherwise in good condition.
