Procore Compass vs BuildingConnected TradeTapp for Subcontractor Prequalification

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the platform that matches your bid-management system. A general contractor already running Procore will get the most connected workflow from Procore Prequalifications with COMPASS data surfaced in Enhanced Bid Management. A contractor using Autodesk Construction Cloud or BuildingConnected will usually find TradeTapp the more natural choice because invitations, questionnaires, qualification records and estimating workflows stay in the BuildingConnected environment.

The products are not interchangeable risk engines. COMPASS presents a named QScore from 1.0 (lowest risk) to 7.9 (highest risk), calculated from business, financial, and health-and-safety variables. TradeTapp emphasizes configurable questionnaires, limit calculations, financial ratios and sharing risk information with estimating teams; the reviewed official descriptions do not publish an equivalent single score.

The short answer: fit the tool to your bid ecosystem

Prequalification works best when the information collected from subcontractors is available at the moment estimators and project teams decide whom to invite, level and award. Procore Prequalifications and BuildingConnected TradeTapp both collect qualification material through a browser, but they organize that work around different platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Select Procore Prequalifications plus COMPASS when your company uses Procore Bid Management, needs configurable review and correction cycles, and wants COMPASS risk information and QScore filtering in Enhanced Bid Management.
  • Select TradeTapp when your team already works in BuildingConnected or Autodesk Construction Cloud, wants qualification data reused across general-contractor invitations, and needs qualification and risk information available to BuildingConnected estimating workflows.
  • Do not treat QScore and TradeTapp outputs as equivalent. COMPASS documents a standardized numerical score. TradeTapp’s documented controls are questionnaires, financial ratios, limit calculations and information sharing, so your team must define its own decision thresholds and review rules.

Neither choice eliminates human review. Financial capacity, safety history, licensing, insurance, project experience and current workload still need to be checked against the scope and location of each project.

What Procore supplies

Procore Prequalifications

Procore Prequalifications is the qualification workspace for general contractors and owners. Administrators configure the questions and qualification form, invite companies, review submissions, comment on answers, request corrections and assign a prequalification status. Subcontractors use the Prequalification Portal to view invitations, submit information and manage their materials. Procore describes secure storage, customizable questions and explicit approval or denial decisions as part of the product.

That structure is useful when qualification is a governed process rather than a one-time questionnaire. A reviewer can return an incomplete submission for correction instead of starting a new application, keep comments with the record and record the final status in the same system. Set the form and status vocabulary before invitations go out; changing definitions mid-cycle makes historical decisions difficult to compare.

COMPASS inside Procore bidding

COMPASS is an independent subcontractor-risk benchmark from Bespoke Metrics that Procore exposes through an embedded app and advanced subcontractor analytics. The documented integration is a limited release for Procore’s Enhanced Bid Management experience in the United States and Canada. It requires an active Procore Bid Management subscription. Eligible users can view COMPASS information and filter bidders by COMPASS data while working with bids.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

COMPASS’s QScore is documented as a numerical assessment of subcontractor risk based on business, finance, and health-and-safety variables. Procore’s documentation, updated April 25, 2025, places the scale at 1.0 (lowest risk) to 7.9 (highest risk). The score is a screening signal, not a guarantee of performance or a replacement for reviewing the underlying submission, project fit and current capacity.

What BuildingConnected TradeTapp supplies

TradeTapp’s current location

TradeTapp is Autodesk’s subcontractor-qualification product in the BuildingConnected family. TradeTapp has moved into BuildingConnected, so subcontractors no longer use the former standalone TradeTapp portal. Current migration guidance directs them to the BuildingConnected TradeTapp Invites dashboard to view, complete and submit applications.

For a subcontractor, the normal path is to open the invitation, work in BuildingConnected’s Qualifications area or TradeTapp Invites dashboard, collaborate with colleagues and submit the completed application. BuildingConnected states that a subcontractor pays no cost to complete a TradeTapp invitation and may respond to as many general contractors as invited. Stored qualification data can transfer to other general contractors, reducing repeated data entry when the subcontractor chooses to reuse it.

Questionnaires, limits and estimating connections

Autodesk describes TradeTapp as supporting automated custom questionnaires, limit calculations, financial ratios and sharing risk information with estimating teams. It also integrates with BuildingConnected Pro. These capabilities let a general contractor express its own qualification policy—for example, minimum single-project and aggregate limits, required financial ratios or trade-specific questions—rather than relying on one universal score.

BuildingConnected also supports a public Link to Qualify. A contractor can place that link on its website; a subcontractor follows it, signs in or creates a BuildingConnected account and begins the qualification process. This is useful for expanding the applicant pool, but the link should lead to a clearly scoped form and an explanation of documents required so that unqualified or incomplete submissions do not overwhelm reviewers.

How a Procore-based qualification cycle works

  1. Define the policy. Decide which trades need prequalification, the required financial, safety, insurance, licensing and experience evidence, and what each status means. Separate universal questions from trade- or project-specific questions.
  2. Build the form in Procore Prequalifications. Add the questions, document requirements and review ownership. Use unambiguous units and time periods—for example, whether revenue is annual, trailing twelve months or a fiscal-year figure.
  3. Invite companies through the Prequalification Portal. Give each invitee a response deadline, a contact for questions and a list of documents that must be current on the submission date.
  4. Review and comment in one record. Check completeness first, then evaluate financial capacity, safety information, insurance and project experience. Use comments to identify a specific missing or inconsistent answer.
  5. Request corrections rather than duplicating applications. Return the submission with a defined correction request and due date. Keep the original answer visible so the reviewer can see what changed.
  6. Assign the decision status. Approve, deny or use the configured status scheme only after the required evidence is present. Record conditions—such as a lower bid limit or supplemental insurance—where your internal policy permits conditional approval.
  7. Use COMPASS in bidding when eligible. In Enhanced Bid Management, view COMPASS information and filter bidders by COMPASS data. Treat the QScore as one risk input alongside the project-specific review; document why a bidder was retained or excluded when the score and internal evidence disagree.

How a TradeTapp qualification cycle works

  1. Set qualification rules and questionnaire logic. Define trade-specific questions, required documents, minimum limits, financial-ratio tests and any automatic follow-up questions. Make the rules understandable to estimators who will use the result.
  2. Invite subcontractors in BuildingConnected. Send the TradeTapp invitation to the correct company and contact. Include the trade, project location, scope and deadline so a firm can answer in the right context.
  3. Direct invitees to the current workspace. Tell subcontractors to use BuildingConnected’s Qualifications area or TradeTapp Invites dashboard. Do not send them to the retired standalone TradeTapp portal.
  4. Allow team collaboration. A subcontractor can work with its internal team before submission. Encourage one person to own the final review so conflicting answers are resolved before the application is sent.
  5. Review calculated limits and ratios. Check whether the stated single-project and aggregate limits fit the proposed scope. Investigate unusual ratios or missing periods instead of accepting an automated pass without context.
  6. Share the result with estimating. Use the BuildingConnected Pro connection to make qualification and risk information visible where estimators assemble bid lists. Define which statuses may be invited automatically and which require a reviewer.
  7. Use Link to Qualify selectively. Place the public link on a recruiting or subcontractor page only when your team can monitor incoming applications and respond to questions. Remove or replace the link when the intake window closes.

Understanding the different risk approaches

What the COMPASS QScore tells you

The QScore compresses business, financial and health-and-safety variables into a named range. A lower number represents lower assessed risk on the documented 1.0–7.9 scale; a higher number represents higher assessed risk. Because the scale is not a bid price, capacity guarantee or project-specific forecast, use it to prioritize investigation and bidder review rather than as an automatic award rule.

Keep the score’s date and context with your decision. A subcontractor’s financial position, insurance, safety record or workload can change after a score is displayed. Require current documents for high-value or high-risk scopes even when the score appears favorable, and record the reason for any exception to your normal threshold.

What TradeTapp’s documented controls tell you

TradeTapp’s published description focuses on the components a contractor can configure: automated custom questionnaires, limit calculations, financial ratios and risk-information sharing. Since the reviewed material does not publish a single comparable score, two contractors can reach different conclusions from similar answers if they set different thresholds. That flexibility is valuable for local policy, but it makes governance essential.

Ecosystem and workflow fit

Choose Procore when Procore is the operational system

Procore is the stronger operational fit when bid management, project records and prequalification reviews already live there. Reviewers can work in the Prequalification Portal, and eligible Enhanced Bid Management users can see COMPASS information while filtering bidders. This reduces duplicate exports and helps keep the qualification status close to the bid list.

Choose TradeTapp when BuildingConnected is where estimators work

TradeTapp is the natural fit when your estimating team builds solicitations, tracks bidder responses and collaborates in BuildingConnected. Qualification data and risk information are designed to flow into that estimating context, and subcontractors who already have BuildingConnected accounts can reuse stored information with other general contractors.

When the two ecosystems coexist

If different business units use both platforms, do not assume that a status or score in one can be imported as an equivalent status in the other. Establish a common internal record of the decision: company identity, trade, project, review date, evidence period, limits, safety findings, reviewer and final status. Export or document the fields your retention policy requires, then make clear which system is authoritative for each project.

Implementation checklist for a defensible program

  • Ownership: Name a qualification administrator, trade reviewers and an estimating consumer for every form.
  • Version control: Record the form version and effective date. Do not compare a submission completed under an old question set with one completed under a new policy without noting the difference.
  • Evidence windows: State how recent financial statements, safety data, insurance certificates and licenses must be.
  • Capacity: Define single-project and aggregate exposure limits, then test them against the proposed contract value and current backlog.
  • Exceptions: Require written approval for conditional or out-of-policy acceptance.
  • Privacy and access: Give only necessary staff access to financial and safety information, and explain to subcontractors how submitted materials are used.
  • Renewal: Set a review cadence and a trigger for requalification after ownership changes, major incidents, lapsed insurance or material financial deterioration.
  • Bid-list behavior: Decide whether an incomplete, expired or conditionally approved record can appear in an estimator’s bidder list.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Assuming a score replaces diligence

A QScore is an assessment, not a performance warranty. Fix this by requiring the same project-specific checks for every bidder and documenting how the score influenced—not dictated—the decision.

Sending subcontractors to the wrong portal

TradeTapp’s former portal is no longer the destination. Include current BuildingConnected instructions in every invitation and provide the Qualifications area or TradeTapp Invites dashboard path.

Using inconsistent financial definitions

Limit calculations and ratios are only comparable when inputs mean the same thing. Define the period, currency, consolidation basis and treatment of affiliates before the questionnaire opens.

Inviting firms without a correction process

Incomplete submissions create avoidable back-and-forth. Procore users should use comments and correction requests in the record. TradeTapp users should identify missing evidence, set a deadline and assign one reviewer rather than silently changing answers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring regional availability

The cited COMPASS integration release covers the United States and Canada. Verify availability before promising QScore filtering to teams or projects elsewhere, and confirm what data can be used for local compliance decisions.

Questions to settle before purchase or rollout

  1. Which system contains the authoritative bidder list and project record?
  2. Do estimators need a numerical risk signal, configurable rules, or both?
  3. Can the platform enforce your required limits, ratios, insurance and safety evidence without spreadsheets?
  4. How will subcontractors be invited, corrected, renewed and notified of status?
  5. What information must remain available when a company responds to another general contractor?
  6. Which regions and legal entities are covered by the specific integration and subscription you plan to use?
  7. Who audits overrides, expired documents and changes to the qualification form?

Answer those questions using a pilot with representative trades and a real bid cycle. Measure completion time, correction rounds, reviewer workload and whether estimators can see the decision context without leaving their bid workspace. The better product is the one your teams can operate consistently, not the one with the longest feature list.
