Passive speaker drivers
A preamp works with the signal before it reaches the speakers. It may add gain, select sources, control volume, provide tone controls, match impedances, or apply phono equalization. A power amplifier receives a line-level signal and supplies the voltage and current required by passive speaker drivers. Vandersteen describes this distinction as line-level input becoming speaker-level output.

What a preamp does
A preamp can raise a weak microphone, instrument, or phono signal to a usable line level. It can also switch between a streamer, CD player, DAC, television, and turntable; provide volume, balance, mute, or tone controls; and sometimes include a DAC, phono stage, headphone amplifier, or home-theater processor.
#1 Best Overall
- It is applicable to power weak signals into line-level signals. The amplification multiples are 10 times (20dB). It can directly drive the headphone to work (the headphone output port can't be used with other output ports at the same time), the max headphone impedance supported is 16 ohm.
- Using the classic Dual OP AMP NE5532, high frequency electrolytic capacitor, noise reduction circuit design, no background noise, effective gain audio, improve sound quality.
- Input: RCA (L / R) + 3.5mm, Output: RCA (L / R) + 3.5mm + headphones, Poowered by DC 9-19v, static current about 8Ma. With volume adjustment knob, the volume can be adjusted freely.
- Small size, easy to carry and use. The size: 3.42in × 1.96in × 1.45in (87mm × 50mm × 37mm). It is a preamp and cannot be used as a power amplifier to drive passive speakers working.
- Widely compatible with all audio devices. Input: DVD, CD, set-top box, MP3, TV, mobile phone, computer, tablet, microphone, phono turntable, sound card, guitar, bass, electronic instrument, game console or other devices. Output: speakers, subwoofer, Sound Blaster, reverberator, AV receiver, Post-Amp, Headphones, etc.
Not every line-stage preamp provides substantial gain. Some mainly select, buffer, and attenuate already usable line-level sources. A microphone preamp is a different device from a phono preamp, and neither should automatically be treated as a general-purpose preamp.
Shure identifies microphone level as much weaker than line level. Typical reference levels include about −10 dBV for consumer line level, +4 dBu for professional line level, and approximately −60 to −40 dBu for many microphone signals. These are reference standards, not fixed universal voltages.
What a power amplifier does
A power amp is designed to deliver speaker-level output into an electrical load. Its suitability depends on the speaker’s impedance behavior, sensitivity, room, listening distance, desired volume, and the amplifier’s ability to remain stable under load—not simply on matching two wattage numbers.
Power amps connect to SPEAKER OUT, SPEAKER A/B, binding posts, spring clips, or Speakon connectors. Markings such as 4 Ω, 6 Ω, and 8 Ω indicate supported speaker loads. Check both the speaker’s nominal and minimum impedance and the amplifier’s published load range.
Which setup do you need?
| Your equipment | Typical solution |
|---|---|
| Source plus passive speakers | Integrated amplifier, or separate preamp and power amp |
| Source plus powered speakers | Line-level source or preamp; no external power amp |
| Turntable with PHONO output | Amplifier with a PHONO input or an external phono preamp |
| Turntable with LINE output or built-in phono stage | Connect to AUX, CD, LINE, or powered-speaker input |
| Microphone plus audio interface | Usually the interface’s built-in microphone preamp |
| Audio interface plus passive monitors | Power amp, unless the monitors are active |
| Audio interface plus powered monitors | Connect the interface’s line outputs directly to the monitors |
| Power amp without source selection or volume control | Add a preamp, mixer, DAC with variable output, or suitable controller |
Passive speakers
Passive speakers contain no power amplifier. They require an external power amp or integrated amplifier and connect to speaker outputs, never ordinary line outputs. Their advantage is flexibility: you can upgrade the amplifier and speakers independently.

- Simple plug & play: This mini preamp has stereo RCA inputs and stereo RCA outputs. Connect the Turntable to the RCA inputs and ground. Then, connect the amplifier Receiver to the RCA outputs
Powered or active speakers
Powered speakers contain internal power amplification. They normally accept a line-level, digital, USB, Bluetooth, or other source input, depending on the model. A preamp, DAC with volume control, mixer, streamer, or audio interface may be all you need.
Do not connect powered speakers to a conventional amplifier’s speaker terminals unless the manufacturer specifically provides a compatible speaker-level input. Edifier distinguishes line/preamp outputs from amplified speaker outputs.

Turntables: PHONO versus LINE
A raw phono cartridge produces a very small, frequency-altered signal. A phono stage both raises it to line level and applies the required RIAA equalization. A typical cartridge output may be around 5 mV, while a line output may be roughly 150–200 mV; actual values vary. Lenco explains the difference between PHONO and LINE output.
Use one of these chains:
Turntable PHONO → amplifier PHONO input
Turntable PHONO → external phono preamp → amplifier LINE input
Turntable LINE → amplifier AUX/CD/LINE input
Turntable LINE → powered speakers
Connecting raw PHONO output to an ordinary line input produces very quiet, thin sound with little bass. Conversely, connecting a turntable’s LINE output to a PHONO input applies phono gain and equalization twice, causing excessive gain and incorrect tonal balance.
Check for a PHONO/LINE switch or a statement that the turntable has a built-in phono preamp. A separate phono stage is useful when the amplifier lacks a PHONO input, the built-in stage is unsuitable, or you need moving-magnet/moving-coil compatibility, adjustable gain, or cartridge loading.

Studio and guitar meanings
Microphones and audio interfaces
In recording, “preamp” usually means a microphone preamp:
Microphone → mic preamp/audio interface → A/D converter → computer
An interface commonly includes microphone preamps, instrument inputs, monitor outputs, headphone amplification, and digital conversion. It does not normally provide the power needed for passive main speakers.
For monitoring:
Audio interface line output → powered studio monitor
Audio interface line output → power amp → passive studio monitor
PreSonus explains the distinction between mic, instrument, and line levels. Never send a power-amp or speaker output into an audio interface or other line input; Focusrite warns that this can cause severe damage.
For guitar, the terms may describe separate stages inside a complete guitar amplifier. A guitar amp typically combines an instrument preamp, tone controls, power amp, and speaker. A guitar preamp or power amp alone is not necessarily a complete playable amplifier system.
Integrated amplifier, receiver, or separates?
Integrated amplifier
An integrated amplifier combines source selection, volume control, a line stage, and a power amp. Some models add a phono stage, DAC, Bluetooth, network streaming, headphone output, subwoofer output, or HDMI ARC. These features are model-specific; an integrated amplifier does not automatically include all of them. Denon defines an integrated amplifier as combining preamp and power-amplifier functions.

Choose one when you want the simplest passive-speaker system, fewer cables, and straightforward volume control.
Separate preamp and power amp
Sources → preamp PRE OUT → power-amp input → passive speakers
Separates provide more upgrade and configuration flexibility. They can make it easier to choose a particular number of balanced or unbalanced inputs, a higher-power amplifier, or separate control and power components. The trade-offs are higher cost, more cables, more opportunities for hum or gain mismatch, and more complicated troubleshooting. Separates are not automatically better sounding than a well-designed integrated amplifier.
Receivers and all-in-one systems
An AV receiver generally combines source switching, processing, multiple power-amplifier channels, and sometimes a tuner. A streaming amplifier may combine network functions, a DAC, preamp controls, and power amplification. Define the included functions from the specifications rather than the marketing label.

Start with the speaker specifications and intended listening conditions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Impedance: Check nominal and minimum impedance and the amplifier’s supported load range.
- Sensitivity: Efficient speakers need less amplifier power for a given volume.
- Room and distance: Larger rooms and longer listening distances require more output.
- Peak level and dynamics: Music with wide dynamics can require headroom to avoid clipping.
- Subwoofer use: A subwoofer may reduce deep-bass demand on the main amplifier and speakers.
Klipsch notes that amplifier power should be considered alongside speaker characteristics. Speaker and amplifier wattage ratings use different test conditions and do not alone establish compatibility.

- FV2 is a stereo RCA audio switch box with volume control, you can use it for 2 ways audio source input, select one output.
- No gain design: It matches power amplifiers, active speakers and some monitor audio devices very well with lossless sound quality
- High precision volume adjustment: with quality A10K potentiometer
- 2 IN 1 OUT RCA signal audio switch selector: It can select signal source without plug/replug cables
- Passive design: It is passive, it does not need power supply. Plug and play. [Passive design, there is no power circuit, there is no amplifier function. ]
For separates, also verify power-amp input sensitivity, preamp maximum output, input impedance, connector pinout, polarity, and balanced versus unbalanced operation. RCA is normally unbalanced. XLR is commonly balanced, but an XLR connector alone does not prove that the entire circuit is balanced. Balanced connections are particularly useful for rejecting hum on long cable runs.
Gain is not the same as volume
Gain is the amount a stage amplifies or attenuates a signal. Volume is the listening-level control, often implemented by reducing signal level before the power stage. A preamp can have a volume knob without driving speakers.
Too much gain early in the chain can overload an input and cause clipping. Too little gain can force later stages to be turned up, making hiss more noticeable. Set source and preamp levels so normal peaks remain clean, then use the volume control to establish the listening level.

Correct connections and dangerous mistakes
Useful labels
Line-level connections commonly include LINE IN, LINE OUT, PRE OUT, REC OUT, TAPE OUT, AUX, CD, RCA, XLR, and TRS. Speaker-level connections commonly include SPEAKER OUT, SPEAKER A/B, binding posts, spring clips, and Speakon connectors. Yamaha shows pre/line outputs feeding an external amplifier or active speaker.
Never make these connections
Power-amp speaker output → preamp input
Power-amp speaker output → powered-speaker line input
Turntable LINE output → amplifier PHONO input
Speaker outputs carry far more energy than line outputs and can damage receiving equipment. If an AV receiver feeds an external power amp, use the receiver’s PRE OUT, not its speaker terminals.
Quick troubleshooting
- No sound or very low volume: Check the selected input, mute state, variable versus fixed output, phono/line setting, and whether the power amp is receiving a volume-controlled signal. A line-level source connected directly to some power amps may produce unexpectedly low output; Harman Professional explains why a preamp may be needed.
- Loud or distorted sound: Check whether a line output is feeding a mic input, whether a power output is feeding a line input, and whether two gain stages are overloaded. PreSonus describes this type of level mismatch.
- Thin turntable sound: The raw PHONO output probably needs a phono stage and RIAA equalization.
- Hum or buzz: Inspect the turntable ground wire, cable routing, shielding, balanced connections, and possible ground-loop interactions. Do not lift protective earth grounds as a general fix.
- Unexpected double amplification: Avoid unnecessary cascaded preamp stages and never cascade speaker outputs. A turntable’s built-in phono stage should not normally feed an amplifier’s PHONO input.
The simplest decision rule
- Identify whether the speakers are passive or powered.
- Identify the source output: PHONO, microphone, instrument, digital, or line level.
- Check whether a phono stage, mic preamp, DAC, volume control, or power amp is already built in.
- Use an integrated amplifier for the simplest passive-speaker setup.
- Use separate preamp and power amp components when you need specific routing, power, connectivity, or upgrade flexibility.
- Use a line-level controller or preamp—not a power amp—for powered speakers.
The reliable principle is simple: choose based on the signal entering the device and the speaker receiving its output, not on whether the product name says “preamp” or “amp.”
