Choose a porcelain slab or panel when uninterrupted visual flow and fewer grout joints justify the extra planning for delivery, handling, fabrication and specialist installation. Choose conventional large-format porcelain tile when the room, access route or installer is better suited to smaller pieces and a familiar tile-setting process. Neither label proves that a product is stronger, cheaper, more durable or suitable for a particular surface. Confirm the exact thickness, approved application, substrate, joint layout and installation method before ordering.
What the two terms actually mean
“Porcelain slab” and “porcelain panel” are not interchangeable with every large-format tile. The current ANSI A137.3/A108.19/A108.20-2025 listing describes gauged porcelain tile panels/slabs as products with a facial area of at least one square meter. The same listing describes A137.3 as covering minimum physical properties and grading procedures; the related installation standards and the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) handbook address how these products are installed. Read the ANSI standard listing and the 2025–2026 TCNA handbook for the current scope.

“Large-format tile” is a wider marketing phrase with no single universal size threshold. It can describe large conventional tiles as well as panels, but it should not be used as a synonym for every slab. Gauged products also come in different thicknesses and with different approved uses. A thin wall panel is not automatically equivalent to a thick countertop slab, and one thickness should never be assumed suitable for floors, walls and worktops interchangeably.

Slab versus large-format tile at a glance
| Decision point | Porcelain slab or panel | Conventional large-format porcelain tile |
|---|---|---|
| Visible joints | Larger pieces can reduce the number of seams and create more continuous veining or color. | More individual units generally create more joints across the same area. |
| Handling | Large, heavy pieces may require a coordinated lifting team, suction equipment, staging space and a verified route into the room. | Usually easier to maneuver than very large panels, although large tiles still need careful planning. |
| Installation system | Use a method intended for gauged panels/slabs and an installer experienced with the exact product. | Use the tile manufacturer’s instructions and current standards; floor installations may benefit from leveling accessories. |
| Product checks | Verify thickness, reinforcement if specified, dimensions, fabrication limits, edge details and approved applications. | Verify dimensions, thickness, surface and wear characteristics, intended use and the manufacturer’s method. |
| Price evidence | No universal premium is established. Compare a complete installed quote, not material-only pricing. | No universal discount is established. Compare the same scope, preparation and access conditions. |
Why homeowners choose porcelain slabs
Fewer interruptions in the pattern
A panel can span a wall or counter backsplash with fewer joints than a field of smaller tiles. That can make a marble-look pattern, concrete effect or solid color read as one continuous surface. The visual benefit depends on the room’s dimensions, the panel layout and where cuts are required; a niche, window, outlet or corner can add seams regardless of the nominal panel size.

Product sizes vary widely. For example, Cosentino states that its Dekton cladding slabs extend up to 3,300 × 1,630 mm, while also offering smaller formats. That is a manufacturer-specific example, not a size rule for porcelain generally; confirm the dimensions and usable area of the product you are buying on its technical sheet. See the manufacturer’s cladding page.
Large surfaces with fewer grout lines
Fewer joints can simplify the design of a shower wall, fireplace surround or full-height backsplash. It does not create a grout-free installation. Joint widths, movement joints and sealant details remain product- and application-specific, and the substrate still has to be flat, sound and properly prepared.
Where large-format tile may be the better fit
Restricted access or a small work area
Doorways, stair turns, elevators, tight corridors and balconies can make a very large panel impossible to move safely. Smaller large-format tiles may fit through the route, can be staged in more places and may be easier to protect while other trades work. Measure the entire path, not just the finished room: truck access, unloading area, exterior steps, turns, ceiling height and the final lift all matter.

A familiar tile-setting workflow
Many tile contractors are comfortable with large tiles but have limited experience with gauged panels. That distinction matters because panels often require purpose-designed handling, cutting, adhesive coverage and placement procedures. A contractor who cannot identify the product’s installation method, required tools and responsibility for unloading is not ready to price the work accurately.
Phased repairs or future replacement
Smaller units can make a localized repair less disruptive. A damaged panel may require replacing a large visible area, while a damaged tile can sometimes be removed and replaced individually. Neither outcome is guaranteed: keep spare material from the same production run when possible, and ask the supplier about future availability before committing to a discontinued color or format.

Handling, delivery and access: the slab-specific planning test
Large panels arrive as fragile, high-value pieces that must be moved one at a time. Cosentino’s flooring manual calls for safe individual movement and suction cups suitable for the tile’s size and weight. Its instructions apply to the named product, but the planning principle is universal: the installer and supplier must agree on who unloads, what equipment is used and where the pieces are staged. Review the installation manual alongside your product’s own guide.
- Measure the delivery vehicle’s stopping point and the route from unloading to the room.
- Record doorway and hallway widths, ceiling clearances, stair angles, lift dimensions and tight turns.
- Confirm whether the building requires advance notice, protection of common areas or a reserved elevator.
- Provide a clean, level staging area protected from weather, impact and other trades.
- Confirm the number of trained handlers, carrying frames, suction lifters, edge protection and stands required.
- Inspect each piece before installation and photograph damage while the packaging and delivery paperwork are still available.
Do not order material until the installer has walked the route or reviewed accurate measurements. A panel that fits the finished wall can still fail at the stair landing or a 90-degree turn.

Panels use dedicated methods
The 2025–2026 TCNA handbook is devoted to gauged porcelain panels/slabs and describes 17 installation methods. Every method assumes a properly designed, constructed and prepared substructure. The method is selected from the product, location, panel thickness, support conditions and exposure—not from the word “slab” alone.
Ask the installer to identify the exact TCNA or manufacturer method in the written proposal. The proposal should state the setting material, coverage target, back-buttering or adhesive procedure where required, movement-joint treatment, edge support and curing or protection requirements.
Flatness and preparation come first
Large pieces bridge more area, so a dip or ridge in the substrate can prevent full contact, create lippage or concentrate stress. Preparation may include repairing cracks, correcting plane or level, replacing unsuitable backer board, waterproofing a wet area and honoring structural and perimeter movement joints. The installer—not the panel label—must verify that the substrate meets the product and method requirements.

Large-format floor tile and leveling systems
Cosentino’s flooring guidance recommends auxiliary systems such as leveling wedges for large-format floors. A leveling system can help align adjacent edges; it cannot flatten an unacceptable substrate or compensate for poor adhesive coverage. The installer should specify a compatible clip, wedge or other system for the exact tile thickness and setting method rather than treating one accessory as universally required.

Large panels reduce the number of joints; they do not eliminate the need for joints. Joint width depends on the product, calibration, installation environment and manufacturer instructions. Cosentino’s Dekton flooring manual, for its own system, lists minimum grout joints of 2 mm indoors and 3 mm outdoors, with separate requirements for raised floors and tiles installed on sand. Those figures must not be transferred to another porcelain product or project.
Movement joints are a separate issue from ordinary grout joints. Perimeters, changes in plane, structural breaks, transitions and large expanses may need flexible sealant or designed movement joints. Spacing rules in a manufacturer’s manual apply to that manufacturer’s system; do not convert a product-specific expansion-joint distance into a universal rule.
Ask for a scaled joint plan showing corners, transitions, penetrations, drains, niches and movement joints before fabrication. This prevents a last-minute decision that places a narrow sliver beside a doorway or cuts through the focal point of a printed pattern.
Choosing by application
Shower walls and wet rooms
Panels can reduce the number of vertical grout lines on a shower wall, but waterproofing, corner treatment, penetrations, slope and compatible sealants still control performance. Confirm that the exact thickness and panel system are approved for wet walls and that the installer can detail niches, benches and drains. A product marketed for cladding is not automatically approved for a shower floor.

Floors
Floor selection requires the product’s traffic rating, surface finish, thickness, support conditions and installation method. Large panels may be practical in an open room with excellent access and a qualified crew; conventional large-format tiles may be easier to maneuver and replace. Check lippage limits, coverage and movement-joint requirements in the product instructions.
Countertops and islands
Do not infer countertop suitability from a panel’s appearance or area. Countertops add cutouts, unsupported spans, edge profiles, heat exposure and point loads. Verify the exact product’s fabrication guide, thickness, reinforcement, support spacing and warranty conditions with the supplier and fabricator.
Exterior cladding and balconies
Exterior work adds wind, temperature change, rain, freeze-thaw and structural movement. Use only a system expressly approved for the exposure and attachment method. Joint widths and movement details for exterior work are not interchangeable with interior floor guidance.

A step-by-step decision process
- Define the surface and exposure. Record whether the material is for an interior wall, shower, floor, countertop, exterior cladding or another use.
- Obtain technical documents. Request the product technical sheet, fabrication guide, warranty and installation instructions. Confirm thickness, dimensions, approved applications, substrate limits and joint requirements.
- Draw the layout. Place seams, cuts, niches, outlets, drains, corners and movement joints on a scaled drawing. Calculate usable yield, not just room area.
- Audit access. Measure unloading, storage and carrying routes, then have the installer confirm the lifting team and equipment.
- Verify the installer. Ask for recent work with the same product category and request the proposed method, setting materials and coverage procedure.
- Price equivalent scopes. Obtain written installed quotes that include material, fabrication, delivery, handling, substrate work, installation, grout, sealants, protection and disposal.
- Plan for damage. Order reasonable spare material, establish inspection responsibility at delivery and document the replacement process.
- Approve before ordering. Sign off on the layout, joint plan, edge details, color and responsibility for every preparation item.
Installation-day checklist
- Confirm the substrate is clean, dry where required, flat enough for the selected method and free of unresolved movement or structural problems.
- Verify waterproofing and flood-test documentation in wet areas before covering the work.
- Check panel orientation, vein direction, shade, lot and cut marks against the approved layout.
- Use handling frames, suction lifters and protective stands appropriate to the piece; never drag a panel across the substrate.
- Apply setting material and achieve the coverage required by the product method, including the specified treatment of the panel back.
- Keep planned grout and movement joints open; do not squeeze panels tight to walls, columns or adjacent materials unless the approved system specifically permits it.
- Protect finished surfaces from traffic, impact, staining and other trades for the period stated by the setting-material and product instructions.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Ordering by room area alone
Symptom: The material quantity looks sufficient, but the layout requires an extra slab or creates unacceptable narrow strips. Correction: Approve a scaled cutting plan that accounts for pattern matching, openings, edge finishing and breakage before fabrication.
Assuming every “slab” has the same strength
Symptom: A thin panel is specified for a use intended for a thicker or reinforced product. Correction: Match the exact thickness and support requirements to the application and obtain written confirmation from the supplier.
Skipping the access survey
Symptom: The panel arrives but cannot safely pass a stair, turn or doorway. Correction: Measure the complete route and assign unloading, lifting equipment and staging responsibilities in the contract.
Using grout-joint numbers from another product
Symptom: An installer proposes a joint width copied from an online example. Correction: Use the purchased product’s instructions and the applicable installation method; treat manufacturer-specific figures as non-transferable.
Believing leveling clips fix an uneven floor
Symptom: Edges still rock or lippage remains after clips are installed. Correction: Stop and correct substrate flatness and adhesive coverage; leveling accessories align pieces but do not replace preparation.
Comparing incomplete quotes
Symptom: The apparently cheaper option later adds delivery, fabrication, waterproofing or special handling. Correction: Reissue both options with the same inclusions and exclusions, then compare the installed totals.
Bottom-line decision rules
- Select a slab or panel when visual continuity is a primary design goal, the layout benefits from fewer seams, access has been proven and a qualified installer can follow the exact system.
- Select conventional large-format tile when maneuverability, phased installation, local installer familiarity or easier spot replacement outweighs the value of a nearly continuous surface.
- Pause either choice when the substrate, access route, thickness, application approval, joint plan or installed price is still unknown.
The reliable choice is the product-and-method combination that your room, substrate, access route and installer can support—not the largest format shown in a showroom.
