Her planting is not a production-only vegetable plot. Flowers, herbs, roses and edible crops occupy the same visual field, creating a productive cottage-garden effect and supplying nectar and habitat for bees and butterflies. Unexpected vegetables are allowed to flourish instead of being moved into a prescribed position.

Seven practical ways to recreate the look
1. Layer raised beds at different heights
Use two or three straightforward wooden raised beds in different sizes or heights. Plant vegetables and ornamentals together rather than dividing the yard into an edible zone and a decorative border. Lavender beside onions and nasturtiums spilling over an edge illustrate the approach: combine contrasting textures, heights and scents, then let the edges soften.
2. Add a living arch
Bend a cattle-panel trellis into an arch and secure it with T-posts. Train squash, pumpkins, cucumbers or pole beans over the frame. Once the foliage fills in, the metal support recedes and the arch becomes a leafy passage or a strong view at the end of a path. Leave enough clearance for walking and check that the frame is anchored against wind and the weight of mature vines.

3. Repeat one vertical form
Anderson’s garden uses willow-like obelisks. Repeating a similar trellis shape gives an informal garden visual rhythm and prevents mixed planting from looking accidental. Use the supports for sweet peas, pole beans, clematis or other vines; place them where they can be seen from a window, seating area or entrance.

Instead of isolating roses in a formal border, weave them among vegetables and flowering plants. 5. Make a mini greenhouse a destination
A small glass greenhouse can serve as both working space and focal point. Use it for seedlings, houseplants or cuttings, then place a chair or small seating area nearby so the structure feels inhabited rather than purely utilitarian. Position it where the glazing receives suitable light and where water access makes daily care practical.
6. Mix flowers, herbs and vegetables freely
Sunflowers, nasturtiums, herbs, roses and food crops can share a bed or be arranged in adjoining layers. Flowering plants add color and support pollinators; herbs provide useful foliage and scent. Check each plant’s light, moisture and mature size before combining it, and avoid allowing vigorous plants to smother slower crops.

7. Keep organic matter on the property
A separate Homes & Gardens interview reports that Anderson keeps plant material for compost or leaf mould and leaves naturally fallen trees in place. On a smaller site, that can mean a contained compost system, a leaf-mould pile or a discreet deadwood habitat area. Keep diseased material out of compost and place any retained timber where it cannot obstruct paths or create a safety hazard.

Maintenance: guided looseness, not neglect
The style works because the looseness sits inside a routine. Anderson says, “There’s no easy way around it, there’s no shortcuts. You’ve got to nurture, and you’ve got to plant the seeds, and you’ve got to see it grow.” Water newly planted crops, tie or prune vines before they become unmanageable, harvest regularly and remove diseased growth. Then resist tidying every volunteer seedling simply because it is not in the original plan.

Designate paths and working areas so the informal planting remains usable. A soft edge should still leave room for wheelbarrows, access to raised beds and safe footing around the greenhouse and trellises.
Anderson’s seven garden rules
- No hovering. Give plants what they need, then avoid constant interference.
- Handle everything with love. Treat living plants and the soil as things to care for, not objects to force.
- Never aim for perfection. Let some mess become part of the garden’s character.
- Look below the surface. Soil condition, roots, drainage and moisture determine much of what happens above ground.
- Stick to a rhythm. Consistent watering, observation, harvesting and seasonal work are more useful than frantic rescue.
- Let it evolve. Adjust the planting as you learn which combinations thrive in your conditions.
- Just let it be. Differences in shape, timing and growth are part of the beauty.
She also recommends trying plants you have never grown and “just start playing.” Her companion-planting advice is practical rather than prescriptive: observe which vegetables and fruits grow well together, then refine the arrangement over time.
A small-yard starting plan
- Choose a sunny area and mark two raised beds, leaving a path wide enough for access.
- Install one arch or obelisk before planting so climbing crops have support from the start.
- Put a rose, herbs and pollinator-friendly flowers near the vegetables rather than in a separate border.
- Allow one bed edge to self-seed, while removing volunteers that block paths or crowd young plants.
- Create a compost or leaf-mould area and return finished organic matter to the beds.
- Add a small greenhouse or seating spot only after the basic circulation and watering routine work.
The result should feel intentional when viewed from a distance and pleasantly unpredictable up close—the balance Anderson’s Vancouver Island garden demonstrates.
