The most reliable coastal planting is not a single “best” species. It is a locally native plant community matched to the exact exposure: shifting dune sand, a dry salt-sprayed slope, a sheltered garden, or a wet tidal edge. Native dune grasses and other coastal plants slow wind, bind soil with roots, trap moving sand and recover more readily from salt, drought and storms than plants chosen only for appearance.
Start with your local extension service or coastal agency’s plant list, then buy legally propagated stock from a nursery. Keep new plants watered while roots establish, protect them from traffic and herbivory, and use temporary erosion-control materials when necessary. Plants can reduce surface erosion and build dune resilience, but they cannot by themselves stop major shoreline retreat, storm surge or structural failure.

Why native plants work on a coast
Coastal sites combine several stresses at once: salt spray, strong wind, intense sun, drought, poor or shifting soil, sand burial and, in some locations, salt-water overwash. Plants adapted to those conditions can keep growing when conventional lawn and ornamental species fail. UMass Extension notes that native and naturalized species adapted to coastal conditions may require less maintenance and upkeep.
Vegetation changes how wind and water move across a site. Upright grasses slow wind at the surface; their stems catch airborne sand, while dense roots hold the dune together. Connecticut Sea Grant explains that native dune vegetation traps and stabilizes sand, increasing dune height and width and improving protection against storms and related erosion. That benefit depends on a continuous, living cover—not a few isolated specimens.

“Salt tolerant” also needs qualification. A plant may handle salt spray on its leaves yet be damaged by prolonged salt-water flooding. Conversely, a marsh plant may tolerate inundation but fail on an exposed, rapidly draining dune. Match the plant to the type, duration and frequency of salt exposure at your site.
Match plants to the coastal micro-site
Moving, sterile or wind-blown sand
Use locally native dune grasses where sand is bare, mobile or repeatedly deposited by wind. UMass identifies American beach grass as the best initial plant for sterile dune areas or blowing sand. Its upright growth catches sand and its spreading underground stems help a planting colonize the dune. Plant material should come from a local or climatically appropriate source; a grass native to another coast may not be adapted to your soil, storms or regulations.
Florida guidance identifies sea oats as a key dune plant. Sea oats are a regional example rather than a universal recommendation, and Florida protects them as an endangered species: do not collect plants or seed from the wild. Purchase legally propagated stock where permitted and check local rules before planting or moving it.
Sunny, dry and salt-exposed groundcover
On stable sand or a dry coastal slope, low-spreading natives can cover bare soil between larger plants. Florida examples include railroad vine, gopher apple, beach sunflower, seaside goldenrod and golden creeper. Railroad vine and gopher apple spread quickly and can help stabilize dunes. Golden creeper is described as salt-, drought- and heat-tolerant and useful for erosion control.

These names are examples from a particular regional plant list, not a coast-wide shopping list. Confirm that each species is native to your state and appropriate for your beach, barrier island or estuary. A plant that is native inland, or native to a different shoreline, may behave poorly or be prohibited locally.
Protected coastal beds and residential slopes
Where wind and salt exposure are moderated by buildings, dunes or vegetation, combine native perennials, shrubs and groundcovers. Layering gives rain and wind fewer unprotected paths through the soil: taller shrubs provide shelter, medium-height plants occupy the slope, and low groundcovers close gaps. Select mature height and spread so plants overlap at maturity without becoming a single-species monoculture.
Use the local extension or state coastal plant list to choose species for your soil drainage, sun exposure and expected salt spray. A mixed planting generally offers better resilience to a pest, disease or storm that affects one species than a uniform bed.

Wet, brackish or periodically flooded edges
At a tidal creek, marsh margin, drainage swale or bulkhead edge, choose native wetland or marsh plants that tolerate the site’s inundation and salinity. A dune plant is not automatically suitable for a tidal marsh, and a marsh plant may rot on a high, dry dune. Observe how high water reaches during ordinary tides and storms, how long soil stays saturated, and whether freshwater runoff dilutes salt before selecting plants.

Candidate groups compared
| Candidate or group | Best-fit setting | Salt, wind and burial response | Growth and rooting behavior | Establishment and mature care | Wildlife, supply and legal notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| American beach grass | Bleak, shifting dune faces and sterile blowing sand | Adapted to exposed dune conditions; use where sand movement is the main problem | Upright grass with spreading underground stems that trap and bind sand | Needs protection and fresh water while establishing; once rooted, maintenance is mainly access control and invasive-plant removal | Buy locally appropriate stock; exact nursery availability varies by coast |
| Sea oats | Warm-region foredunes and backdunes where listed as native | Designed for salt spray, wind and sand deposition in its native range | Clumping grass that captures wind-blown sand and contributes to dune building | Water during establishment and protect from trampling; avoid moving mature plants | Florida lists sea oats as endangered and prohibits picking; use legally propagated material and verify permits |
| Railroad vine and gopher apple | Sunny, dry sand where a fast-spreading cover is wanted | Tolerant of coastal exposure in the Florida examples | Rapidly spreading groundcovers that can knit open sand | Check spread so they do not enter prohibited areas or crowd slower natives | Regional examples; verify native status and invasive-species lists locally |
| Beach sunflower and seaside goldenrod | Sunny coastal beds and stable sand | Suitable for salt-exposed conditions in their regional ranges | Flowering perennials that add vertical and seasonal diversity | Water until established; remove competing invasives rather than routinely clearing all leaf litter | Flowers can support pollinators; local nursery supply is not guaranteed |
| Golden creeper | Hot, dry coastal slopes needing low cover | Described as salt-, drought- and heat-tolerant | Low, spreading cover that helps shield soil from raindrop and wind impact | Low maintenance after establishment if drainage and exposure match its needs | Use only where locally native or approved; confirm mature spread |
| Native marsh or wetland plants | Edges that flood or remain saturated | Selected for the site’s salinity and inundation duration, not for dune exposure | Root systems and stems suited to wet soils; form varies by marsh community | May need seasonal debris management, but do not drain or fill wet areas without authorization | Choose from state or local wetland lists; permits may apply near tidal waters |
No official source provides a comparable nationwide percentage for erosion reduction, labor saved or survival of these plants. Performance varies with species, local ecotype, storm exposure, soil movement, planting density and protection during establishment.
How to establish a low-maintenance coastal planting
- Map the micro-sites. Record full-sun hours, prevailing wind, where sand accumulates, drainage after rain, the highest ordinary and storm water marks, and places people or vehicles cross. Separate dry dunes from wet or brackish depressions before choosing plants.
- Confirm local status and rules. Obtain the current native-plant list from your state extension service, coastal agency or municipality. Check invasive-species lists, dune-protection ordinances, shoreline setbacks and permits for disturbing sand or wetland vegetation. Never collect protected dune plants from the wild.
- Source appropriate stock. Ask a nursery for legally propagated plants and, where possible, local or regionally sourced material. Avoid substituting a visually similar plant from a distant coast simply because its label says “coastal.”
- Prepare without overworking the site. Remove invasive plants and construction debris, but retain stable organic matter and appropriate leaf litter. University of Georgia Extension notes that leaf litter can retain moisture, improve soil and reduce erosion in suitable coastal landscapes. Do not import rich topsoil onto a dune if it changes drainage or encourages weeds.
- Install in layers. Place dune grasses where sand moves, spreading groundcovers on dry gaps, and shrubs or perennials in sheltered zones. Follow the nursery’s mature-spacing guidance so roots can knit together without forcing a dense, single-species stand.
- Water through establishment. Fresh water during the establishment period or during drought stress can make a major difference, according to UF/IFAS guidance. Water deeply enough to reach the root zone, then extend the interval as plants harden off. Avoid frequent shallow watering that encourages weak surface roots.
- Protect new plants. Use temporary markers, low barriers or approved fencing to keep people, pets and vehicles off fragile dunes. Watch for drought, salt burn, wind desiccation and herbivory. Replace losses with the same locally suitable plant rather than filling gaps with an unvetted ornamental.
- Inspect after storms. Look for exposed roots, buried crowns, blocked drainage, new blowouts and invasive seedlings. Let healthy sand deposition remain where it does not threaten access or structures; repeatedly scraping a dune can remove the very material plants are capturing.
Using a coir erosion-control blanket during establishment
On a barren bank or slope, vegetation may need temporary help before roots become strong. UMass Extension describes mulches, netting and erosion-control blankets placed over seeded grasses as a way to hold an embankment until vegetation establishes. A coir erosion-control blanket is one biodegradable option to investigate for this purpose.
Select the blanket’s weave, lifespan and anchoring pattern for the slope angle, expected flow and wind. Lay it in full contact with the soil, secure it with site-appropriate staples or stakes, and keep seams from becoming channels that concentrate runoff. Plant through or beneath the blanket according to the manufacturer’s installation directions. Inspect after heavy rain and repair lifted edges promptly. The blanket is temporary support; it does not replace a living root system or solve active shoreline retreat.

Keeping the landscape low maintenance
“Low maintenance” begins after establishment, not on planting day. For the first seasons, prioritize watering during dry spells, replacing plants lost to storms, and keeping traffic away from root zones. Once cover is continuous, maintenance usually shifts to periodic inspections rather than routine mowing or fertilizing.

- Control invasives early: remove non-native vines, grasses and seedlings before they form a dense mat or displace dune specialists.
- Retain useful litter: leave appropriate fallen leaves and stems where they do not obstruct drainage, sightlines or required access. Organic cover can slow evaporation and raindrop impact.
- Do not fertilize by default: coastal natives are adapted to lean soils; unnecessary nutrients can encourage weeds and wash into waterways.
- Keep paths deliberate: concentrate foot traffic on designated walkways and use signs or fencing around planted dunes.
- Prune selectively: remove storm-damaged or hazardous limbs, but avoid shearing plants into shapes that expose soil.
- Replant with the cause in mind: if water repeatedly removes a section, investigate drainage, concentrated runoff or unauthorized access before simply adding more plants.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by the word “coastal” on a label
Marketing language does not establish native status or performance at your location. Replace the plant with a species on your state or local native list, and confirm its tolerance for your specific salt and flooding regime.
Planting a dune species at a tidal edge
Dune and marsh communities occupy different elevations and hydrologic regimes. Move the dune planting upslope and select wetland natives for the inundated zone instead of trying to make one species serve both.
Using lawn grass or ordinary ornamentals on a dune
Connecticut Sea Grant advises minimizing non-native dune vegetation because lawn grasses and typical ornamentals generally lack the root systems and salt tolerance needed for healthy dunes. Remove them carefully, stabilize exposed soil, and replant with locally appropriate dune vegetation.

Collecting plants from the beach
Collection can damage a public dune and may be illegal. Florida’s sea-oats protections illustrate the risk: purchase propagated stock and check local law for every protected species.
When plants are not enough
Planting is appropriate for surface erosion, dune recovery and landscape-scale soil cover. It is not a stand-alone answer to a failing seawall, undermined foundation, repeated tidal flooding, navigation-channel scour or rapid shoreline retreat. Those conditions require an assessment by the relevant coastal agency and, where necessary, a qualified restoration or coastal engineer. Do not place fill, move sand, or install a structure in a regulated shoreline or wetland area without the required authorization.
A successful planting plan therefore has two parts: a locally native community that fits each micro-site and a management plan that protects it from the human and hydrologic forces causing erosion. When those pieces align, plants can stabilize sand, improve habitat and reduce routine landscape inputs without promising protection they cannot provide.
