For a predictable trip from Mumbai airport to South Mumbai, check Metro Line 3 (the Aqua Line) first. Its full 33.5-kilometre corridor became operational on 9 October 2025 and links the airport area with South Mumbai. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) says an airport–Cuffe Parade journey that could take up to two hours in peak traffic can take approximately 45 minutes by the completed line.
If Line 3 has a service disruption, your destination is outside its practical reach, or you have heavy luggage, use a prepaid or app taxi. For the lowest-cost route to many suburban destinations, combine a BEST bus from your terminal with a Western Line railway journey. Metered autos are useful for short trips around Andheri, Vile Parle, Santacruz, Juhu and Marol. Before leaving the terminal, check Mumbai One, the CSMIA transport information page and the relevant operator’s current notice: construction possessions, station access, bus departures, pickup bays and fares can change.

What to use when the airport metro is delayed
Your best alternative depends on where you are going, how much luggage you have and whether roads are moving. The following hierarchy works for most arrivals:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- South Mumbai in peak traffic: use Metro Line 3 if live service information shows normal operation.
- Andheri, Vile Parle, Santacruz, Juhu or Marol: take a metered auto, or use a taxi if you need a boot, an accessible vehicle or a fixed pickup.
- A low-cost trip toward the Western suburbs: take a BEST bus to Vile Parle East or Andheri East, then continue by Western Line train.
- Thane, BKC, Navi Mumbai, Andheri or Colaba: check the airport’s reclining-seat, live-tracked AC bus service in the Chalo service.
- Late arrival, several bags or an exact address: use a prepaid taxi counter or app cab from the terminal’s designated pickup area.
Do not assume that a road diversion or construction barricade means the entire metro is closed. Confirm the affected line, station and terminal connection in a live notice before changing plans.

Metro Line 3: the fastest fallback for South Mumbai
What changed after October 2025
The full Aqua Line corridor became operational on 9 October 2025. The corridor is 33.5 km long with 27 stations, including 26 underground stations and one above-ground station. It connects the airport area with South Mumbai and removes much of the road exposure that makes an airport-to-city taxi unpredictable.
JICA recorded an airport-to-Cuffe Parade journey of approximately 45 minutes after completion, compared with journeys of up to two hours in peak traffic before the line opened. JICA Chief Representative Takuro Takeuchi described the completion as “a testament to the deepening Japan–India cooperation in infrastructure development” in the agency’s October–December 2025 newsletter.
Finding the airport connection
CSMIA identifies “CSMIA Airport T1” and “CSMIA Airport T2” among the nearest metro stations. The terminal-to-station walk, any internal transfer and the correct entrance can vary by terminal and by construction activity. Follow current airport signs rather than relying on an old map or a previous visit. If you arrive at the wrong terminal, the airport’s complimentary T1–T2 shuttle can move you between terminals.

- You are travelling to Colaba, Cuffe Parade or another South Mumbai destination served efficiently by the completed corridor.
- Peak-hour roads are stationary and the line is reporting normal service.
- You want a more predictable journey time than a taxi can provide.
- Your luggage is manageable on a station walk and train journey.
When not to force a metro journey
- A live notice shows a station closure, a partial service or a delay affecting your direction.
- Your final address is far from a Line 3 station and the additional road transfer removes the time advantage.
- You have bulky equipment, mobility constraints or several children and need door-to-door travel.
- You have a very late arrival and the current operating schedule does not cover your departure time.
Because no particular future closure date is established here, treat every construction-related warning as a live operational question. Check before walking out of the terminal.

BEST bus plus Western Line train: the budget route with a transfer
BEST buses can move you away from the airport road bottleneck and toward suburban railway stations. The airport lists these terminal-specific routes:
| Route | Departure terminal | Airport-side destination | How to continue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 312 | Terminal 1 | Vile Parle East and Andheri East | Enter the Western Line at the suitable railway station. |
| 321 | Terminal 2 | Vile Parle East | Continue from Vile Parle on the Western Line. |
| 308 | Terminal 2 | Andheri East | Continue from Andheri on the Western Line. |
How to make the transfer
- Confirm your terminal and locate the signed BEST stop outside the arrivals area.
- Ask the conductor or check the current airport information for the correct boarding direction; routes and stops can be altered by road works.
- Ride to Vile Parle East or Andheri East, allowing extra time for traffic at the first leg.
- Walk or use local signage to reach the Western Line station.
- Buy the appropriate suburban-rail ticket and board a train serving your direction.
- Complete the final short road or walking leg from the railway station.
This combination is inexpensive and reaches many suburban and western-city destinations, but it is not a traffic-free route. The bus remains exposed to congestion, and the transfer adds stairs, platform walking and luggage handling. It is most practical with a backpack or small suitcase and outside the heaviest road periods.
Airport AC buses for longer corridors
CSMIA advertises reclining-seat, live-tracked air-conditioned buses serving Thane, Andheri, the Bandra–Kurla Complex (BKC), Navi Mumbai and Colaba. These buses can be more comfortable than an ordinary city bus for a longer ride and may avoid arranging a separate first-mile connection.
How to use them
- At arrivals, identify the current AC-bus boarding point for your terminal.
- Open the Chalo service to check the next departure, route, live vehicle position and boarding instructions.
- Match the bus’s destination with the part of the city where you will actually get off; a stop in BKC or Andheri may still require a taxi or local connection.
- Keep the boarding information available in case the bay changes because of construction or traffic management.
Live tracking does not guarantee a fixed arrival time. The bus still shares road space with other vehicles, so use Metro Line 3 instead when you need the strongest protection from peak congestion and your destination is on the metro corridor.

Metered autos for nearby suburbs
Metered auto-rickshaws operate at both terminals and are licensed mainly in Mumbai’s suburbs. They are well suited to Andheri, Vile Parle, Santacruz, Juhu and Marol, where a short direct ride can be simpler than a bus-and-rail transfer.
Boarding and payment
- Use the official terminal queue or the designated auto area.
- Ask the driver to use the meter and check the fare chart displayed in the vehicle.
- Keep the destination and building name ready; suburb addresses can have similar street names.
- For a large suitcase, check that it can be carried safely before boarding.
Autos are a poor default for South Mumbai. The longer cross-city distance, limited luggage space and road congestion remove the advantages that make them useful for short suburban trips. A taxi or Metro Line 3 is generally more suitable for that journey.
Prepaid taxis and app cabs: the door-to-door fallback
CSMIA provides prepaid taxi counters, app-based cab services and car-rental pickup zones at both terminals. They are the most flexible choice when the destination is outside the metro network, you arrive when public transport is sparse, or you need the driver to take you directly to a hotel, office or construction site.

| CNG auto-rickshaw | ₹26 | Not stated in the tariff reference | ₹17.14 per km | Short suburban journeys. |
App-cab prices vary with demand and may include an airport pickup fee. Compare the in-app quote with the prepaid counter before accepting a ride. A lower displayed fare can be offset by a longer pickup walk or a surcharge, while a prepaid quote may offer greater certainty about payment and pickup location.
Making a taxi pickup work during construction
- Read the terminal-specific pickup instruction shown by the airport or the app; do not wait at an old curbside location.
- Confirm the terminal, arrivals door and vehicle registration or driver identification.
- Keep the destination pin and a phone number available in case the driver is redirected to another bay.
- Ask whether tolls, parking or waiting charges are included before the trip begins.
- Photograph or retain the prepaid receipt and report any dispute through the counter or app channel.
Changing terminals without paying
CSMIA operates a complimentary shuttle between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Use it when your flight arrives at one terminal but the bus, metro connection or booked pickup is at the other. Allow time for the shuttle wait, loading and road conditions, especially when a construction diversion is active. Do not book a curbside pickup at the wrong terminal and expect the driver to find you quickly.

Practical plans for common journeys
Terminal 2 to Cuffe Parade during evening traffic
Check Line 3 first. If service is normal, follow the current airport signs to the CSMIA Airport T2 connection and continue toward Cuffe Parade. If a live notice shows a disruption, compare the next AC bus toward Colaba with a prepaid taxi. Choose the taxi when you have heavy bags or the bus’s remaining road journey would place you in the same congestion you are trying to avoid.

Terminal 1 to Andheri East on a tight budget
Route 312 is the direct airport-side bus option listed for Terminal 1 and Andheri East. From there, use the Western Line or a short local ride for the final address. If the bus queue is long or the road is blocked, a metered auto may be quicker for a nearby Andheri destination.

Terminal 2 to Vile Parle
Route 321 links Terminal 2 with Vile Parle East. Use it when the low fare matters more than a guaranteed travel time and you can manage the transfer. A metered auto or app cab is simpler if your destination is on the opposite side of the railway station or you are carrying large cases.
Airport to BKC or Navi Mumbai
Check the live-tracked AC bus listing in Chalo for the relevant corridor. Compare its next departure with an app-cab quote. The bus can provide a comfortable scheduled alternative, while the cab removes the need to match a stop with your final address.
Late-night arrival with several bags
Use the designated prepaid taxi counter or an app pickup zone at your terminal. Confirm the bay and vehicle details, then keep the receipt or trip record. Avoid an improvised bus-and-rail transfer when services, station access and luggage handling are uncertain.
Live checks before you leave the terminal
- Check Mumbai One: look for real-time metro delays and alternative routes.
- Check the CSMIA transport page: confirm your terminal’s current bus stops, taxi bays and inter-terminal instructions.
- Check the operator notice: verify Line 3 service, BEST departures, AC-bus times in Chalo and any temporary closure.
- Check your physical route: follow current signs around barricades instead of taking a familiar shortcut through a construction area.
- Recheck after collecting bags: a delay while waiting for luggage can change the next bus, train or metro departure.
Temporary possessions, station closures, bus schedules, pickup bays and fares are changeable. No reliable closure notice for a particular future travel date is established here, so a route that worked last week should not be treated as guaranteed.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Assuming “metro construction” means Line 3 is unusable: check whether the warning concerns the line, an access road or a different station.
- Choosing an auto for a South Mumbai trip: reserve autos for nearby suburbs; use Line 3 or a taxi for the longer cross-city journey.
- Taking a bus without checking the terminal: Routes 312, 321 and 308 do not all depart from the same terminal. Match the route to T1 or T2 before walking to the stop.
- Using an old taxi pickup point: airport traffic plans can move bays. Follow the current app or airport instruction.
- Comparing only the headline app fare: include airport pickup fees, tolls, waiting and the cost of a final connection.
- Ignoring luggage at the transfer stage: BEST-plus-rail is economical but involves street, station and platform movement. Select a taxi or metro route with manageable walking when carrying heavy cases.
- Changing terminals on foot: use the free CSMIA shuttle when the connection requires T1–T2 movement.
A simple decision rule
Start with the live operational check, then apply the destination and luggage test. If Line 3 is running and your destination is South Mumbai, it normally offers the most predictable peak-period journey. If you are heading to a western suburb and can handle a transfer, BEST plus the Western Line keeps the cost down. If you are making a short suburban trip, take a metered auto. If the address is far from a station, the arrival is late, or your luggage is substantial, pay for the certainty of a prepaid or app taxi. For Thane, BKC, Navi Mumbai, Andheri or Colaba, compare the next Chalo AC bus with the taxi quote rather than assuming one is always faster.
