Safe miter-saw cutting starts with restraint, not the blade guard alone. Hold the workpiece firmly against both the fence and table, use a clamp whenever the saw manual permits and whenever you can position it clear of the blade, keep your hands at the distance specified for that exact model, and never make a freehand cut. A missing, damaged, or malfunctioning guard is a stop-use problem.
The non-negotiable safety baseline
A miter saw can pull, lift, or throw stock that is not held securely. DeWALT safety instructions state that the workpiece must remain stationary and be clamped or held against both the fence and the table. The same instructions warn against freehand cutting because an unrestrained piece can be thrown.

Use this sequence before every cut:
- Confirm the saw is the exact model covered by the instruction manual you are using.
- Seat the material firmly against the fence and table.
- Clamp the material whenever possible, using a clamp or fixture approved or described for that saw and workpiece.
- Keep hands outside the model-specific minimum distance from the blade.
- Check that the guard is installed, moves as intended, and covers the blade above the table.
- Stop if the stock, clamp, guard, or saw movement cannot be controlled throughout the cut.
A clamp improves workholding; it does not make an otherwise unsupported, unstable, or unsuitable piece safe to cut.

1. Read the exact saw manual first
Clamp locations, compatible accessories, and hand-clearance instructions vary by model. The DWS780 manual says to use clamps whenever possible and identifies a compatible clamp. The DWS779 manual contains its own model-specific safety instructions. Do not assume that a clamp that fits one miter saw will fit another.

2. Set the stock against both reference surfaces
Place the workpiece flat on the table and tight against the fence. The clamp should keep it in that position rather than merely pressing down on a piece that can slide or pivot. Irregular shapes may need a fixture or a different setup described by the manual.
3. Choose a clamp that matches the stock and saw
Use a hold-down or other fixture that can grip the material securely without contacting the blade path. A DeWALT DW716 manual describes spring, bar, or C-clamps for some sizes and shapes, but that is model-specific guidance, not a universal compatibility statement. You can read that manual here: DW716 instruction manual.
4. Position the clamp outside every moving part
The clamp must clear the blade, guard, saw head, bevel mechanism, and any sliding or pivoting travel. Tighten it enough to prevent movement, but do not place it where the head can strike it or where the guard cannot close and follow the stock.

5. Perform the prescribed dry run
Several DeWALT manuals instruct the user to make an unpowered dry run. With the saw unpowered and the cutting motion controlled as the manual describes, verify that the blade path reaches only the intended material and that the clamp, guard, and saw movement remain clear. Reposition the clamp if any part of the setup enters the travel path.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
6. Cut only after the setup remains stable
Keep the stock against the fence and table during the cut. If the piece shifts, the clamp loosens, or the guard does not track the material, stop and correct the setup. Never compensate for a moving workpiece by bringing a hand closer to the blade.
How far should your hands be from the blade?
There is no single hand-distance number that applies to every miter saw. Follow the instruction manual for the saw in front of you, including the conditions under which it allows hand support.
| Saw model in the cited manual | Hand-clearance instruction | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DeWALT DWS780 | At least 4 inches (100 mm) from either side of the blade | Applies when the piece is supported by hand; use the model manual’s full instructions. |
| DeWALT DWS779 | At least 4 inches (100 mm) from either side of the blade | Model-specific requirement; do not generalize it to another saw. |
| DeWALT DW716 | A clamp or fixture is required when a hand would be less than 6 inches (152 mm) from the blade in the described circumstances | The 6-inch condition comes from the DW716 manual and is not a universal rule. |
These differences are why a number remembered from another saw can be dangerous. If the manual for your model gives a different distance, use that distance. If you cannot support the stock while maintaining it, clamp the piece or do not make the cut with that setup.

What the blade guard should do
Continuous coverage above the table
OSHA’s miter-saw guidance says the guard must protect the portion of the blade above the table. It should automatically adjust to the material thickness so protection remains continuous as the saw head moves through the cut.

Checks before use
- Confirm the guard is installed and not cracked, broken, or missing.
- Operate the saw’s guard only as the manufacturer’s manual describes; it must move with the saw head and clear the stock without being tied back or bypassed.
- Check that a clamp or fixture does not block the guard from closing or adjusting.
- Stop using the saw if the guard sticks, fails to cover the blade, or behaves differently from the manual’s description.
A guard is a barrier against contact with the blade. It does not hold the workpiece against the fence and table, prevent a short offcut from moving, or authorize a hand position close to the blade.
Damage and recall concerns
A DeWALT safety recall describes a rear guard assembly that could break or shatter when struck, exposing the blade. If you find damage or are unsure whether a saw is affected, stop using that saw and check the current manufacturer recall notice and service instructions for the exact model. Do not infer recall status from the brand name alone, and do not repair, remove, or modify a guard outside the manufacturer’s instructions.
Common miter-saw safety mistakes
Holding short stock by hand
Short pieces leave little room to maintain the required hand distance and can move as the blade enters. OSHA’s incident record dated October 22, 2021, describes a worker who amputated a fingertip while cutting a piece under six inches without a clamp; the guards were present and functioning. That case demonstrates the hazard of hand-holding short stock, but it is an individual incident, not a measure of injury frequency.
Making a freehand cut
Freehand cutting removes the fence-and-table reference that keeps stock stationary. Even a piece that appears light can be thrown when the blade contacts it. If the material cannot be held against both surfaces and secured for the complete cut, change the setup or do not cut it with the miter saw.

Treating one hand-distance number as universal
The DWS780 and DWS779 instructions cite 4 inches (100 mm) for hand-supported stock, while the cited DW716 instruction uses a 6-inch (152 mm) condition requiring a clamp or fixture. The model, not a general internet rule, determines the applicable distance.
Letting the clamp enter the cut path
A clamp that touches the blade, guard, or moving saw head can create a new hazard. Use the dry-run check required by the manual and reposition the clamp until every moving part has clearance.
Continuing with a defective guard
Do not finish one more cut with a guard that is missing, damaged, or malfunctioning. OSHA requires guarding over the blade above the table, and the manufacturer instructions warn against operating a saw when its guard does not function correctly.

Material, blade, and personal protection checks
OSHA lists eye and face protection among miter-saw safety measures. Wear the protection required by your workplace and the saw’s manual, and keep the work area arranged so the material, clamp, and saw can move as intended. Use a sharp blade appropriate for the material and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the blade and setup; a guard cannot correct an unsuitable blade or unstable stock.
- Use eye protection and any required face protection.
- Keep the table and fence clear enough for the stock to seat fully.
- Remove loose items that could interfere with the clamp or saw movement.
- Inspect the material for a shape or size that the saw and its fence cannot support securely.
- Follow the manual’s requirements for the material, blade, setup, and personal protective equipment.
What to do when a setup fails the safety check
| Symptom | Action |
|---|---|
| The piece rocks, slides, or will not stay against the fence | Stop. Re-seat it and use a compatible clamp or fixture. If it still cannot remain stationary, do not make the cut with that setup. |
| The clamp blocks the guard or saw travel | Stop and reposition it. Repeat the unpowered dry run until the blade path, guard, and moving head are clear. |
| Your hand would enter the model’s stated clearance zone | Use a clamp or fixture, or choose a setup that leaves the required distance. Do not rely on the guard as permission to move closer. |
| The guard is cracked, missing, sticks, or fails to cover the blade | Take the saw out of service and follow the manufacturer’s repair or recall instructions for the exact model. |
| You cannot identify the correct clearance or clamp guidance | Stop and obtain the exact instruction manual or ask the responsible supervisor or service provider before cutting. |
Workplace rules and consumer-tool instructions are not interchangeable
OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926.304 and its eTool materials address U.S. workplace hazards and guarding. A homeowner may not be covered by the same workplace regulation, but the guarding and workholding principles remain useful safety guidance. Your saw’s instruction manual supplies the model-specific details, such as clamp compatibility, hand distance, and dry-run procedures. In a construction workplace, follow both the employer’s safety program and applicable OSHA requirements.
Historical injury figures: useful context, not a current rate
OSHA’s general saw eTool reports Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates of more than 310,000 workshop power-tool injuries requiring medical attention in the United States in 1995, including about 87,000 associated with power saws. Those figures are historical, cover broad categories, and are not a current miter-saw-specific injury rate. No recent population-level miter-saw rate is established by the cited material.
