Choose a mini track loader when tight access, low ground pressure and light-to-medium landscaping work are the main constraints. Choose a wheeled skid steer when you have firm surfaces, need faster travel or enclosed-cab operation, and will handle a broad range of material-moving tasks. The right answer is determined by the site and the exact machine—not by the category name alone.
Before buying or renting, compare width and height against every gate and doorway, operating weight against your trailer and tow vehicle, rated operating capacity (ROC) against the loads you will lift, ground pressure against the soil, hydraulic flow against your attachments, and lift path against your loading height.

The short answer
- Pick a mini track loader for gated gardens, turf installation, planting, light trenching, grading in confined areas and other work where flotation and minimal rutting matter more than travel speed.
- Pick a wheeled skid steer for firm yards, paved or gravel surfaces, snow removal, road and utility work, and production jobs where faster travel, an enclosed cab or high-volume material handling improves output.
- Do not compare headline horsepower alone. Width, operating weight, ROC, tipping load, ground pressure, hydraulic flow, lift path, attachment interface and transport limits can change the practical choice.
Tracks are not automatically gentle on every lawn, and a smaller machine is not automatically cheaper to own. A loader that fits the gate but cannot be hauled legally, or one whose coupler cannot run your existing attachments, is the wrong machine regardless of its advertised power.
What the two machine types are
Mini track loader
A mini track loader is a compact ride-on loader carried by rubber tracks. Its tracks spread the machine’s weight over a larger contact area, reducing ground pressure and improving flotation on soft, muddy, uneven or sloped ground. The compact format is intended for access through narrow gates and around buildings, beds and finished landscaping. Typical work includes planting, grading, trenching, moving soil or mulch and replacing hand labor in spaces where a full-size loader cannot maneuver.

The trade-off is that track steering still relies on skidding. The machine can turn within its own footprint, but a pivot turn scrubs the tracks across the surface. Tracks also add undercarriage components and usually cost more to replace than skid-steer tires.
Wheeled skid steer
A skid steer uses four wheels and steers by driving the wheels on each side at different speeds. That arrangement makes it quick and efficient on firm soil, hardstanding, gravel and pavement. Wheeled machines generally travel faster than tracked loaders and are commonly available with enclosed cabs for dust, weather and winter protection. They are strong general-purpose platforms for buckets, pallet forks, snow tools, augers and road or utility attachments.
Wheels can lose traction or sink on saturated ground, and concentrated tire loads can mark finished surfaces. Turf tires and wider, gradual turns reduce marking on firm, dry lawns, but no wheeled machine should be assumed to be damage-free.

Model data shows why specifications matter
The following figures are examples from a Bobcat Company Europe comparison published in 2026. They illustrate the scale of compact machines; they are not universal limits for every mini track loader or skid steer.
| Example model | ROC | Operating weight | Width | Ground pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MT100 mini track loader | 460 kg | 1,538 kg | 904 mm | 36 kPa standard |
| MT120 mini track loader | 544 kg | 1,687 kg | 904 mm standard; 1,030 mm with wide tracks | 27 kPa |
| S70 skid steer | 362 kg | 1,312 kg | 901 mm | Not stated in the comparison |
These examples show that a tracked machine can have a higher ROC than a small wheeled skid steer while also weighing more. The MT120’s wide-track option lowers ground pressure further but increases overall width, which can be decisive at a gate or between buildings. Always use the operating dimensions and weight of the exact configuration you will rent or buy, including tracks, tires, cab, counterweights and attachments.
Ground conditions, traction and turf
Where tracks have the advantage
Rubber tracks distribute weight over a longer footprint. Caterpillar summarizes the benefit this way: “Compact track loaders feature rubber tracks that provide better stability and lower ground pressure, making them preferred for soft, muddy, or uneven terrain.” That flotation helps the machine stay on top of wet soil instead of digging down, and the continuous track contact can maintain traction on slopes and broken ground where a tire may spin.
For a landscaping contractor, the practical result is a wider weather window. A tracked loader may be able to spread topsoil, carry plants or rough-grade a site after rain when a wheeled skid steer would leave ruts or become stuck. Lower ground pressure is a risk reducer, not a guarantee: saturated clay, steep slopes and heavy loads can still cause sliding or rutting.

Where wheels work better
On compacted yards, concrete, asphalt and stable gravel, wheels usually roll faster and turn efficiently without the track wear associated with abrasive surfaces. A wheeled skid steer is often the productive choice for snow removal, loading trucks on a hardstand, moving aggregate around a quarry yard or servicing a road project where the machine spends much of the day travelling.
How to protect a lawn with either machine
- Avoid pivot turns, especially with a loaded bucket. Make a three-point turn when space allows.
- Use wider turns and vary travel paths so the same strip of turf is not repeatedly sheared.
- Stay off saturated lawns whenever the schedule allows; moisture makes both tracks and tires more likely to deform the surface.
- For a tracked loader, keep the machine moving smoothly rather than stopping one side and spinning the other.
- For a skid steer, select turf-oriented tires where appropriate and reduce sharp, high-speed steering inputs.
- Test a short route first. Soil strength, grass species, slope and load can matter more than the brochure’s ground-pressure number.
Speed, maneuverability and lift geometry
Skid steers generally cover ground faster, so they can cycle between a stockpile and a truck or clear a long driveway in less time. Their wheel steering is also efficient on firm surfaces. Mini track loaders trade travel speed for flotation and compact access; in a small garden, avoiding hand cleanup and working without ruts can outweigh slower travel.
Compare whether the machine has one-speed or two-speed travel, and check how the selected speed affects pushing, grading and loaded travel. A two-speed function can improve repositioning on a large site, but it does not eliminate the need to match the machine to the surface.
Lift path determines where the loader is most useful. A radial lift path favors power and reach at lower heights, backfilling and loading a low truck bed. A vertical lift path carries the load farther forward at full height, which helps when loading high-sided trucks or placing material over a wall. Match the path to your actual dump height rather than assuming one design is universally superior.
ROC, tipping load and usable capacity
Rated operating capacity is the manufacturer’s safe lifting rating under a defined standard. It is not a promise that the machine will safely carry that mass in every position or with every attachment. Bobcat notes that ROC is typically calculated at 50% of tipping load for skid steers and 35% for compact track loaders. Because the percentages differ, a skid-steer ROC and a track-loader ROC cannot be compared directly without examining the underlying tipping load and test standard.
Caterpillar’s guidance reports that an equivalent track loader has about 30% more tipping-load capacity than a skid steer. That comparison explains why a tracked machine can feel stable with a load on soft ground, but it should not be converted into a blanket rule for every model. Use the exact data sheet for the configuration, attachment and operating conditions.
When sizing a machine, evaluate the whole load cycle:

- ROC and tipping load: confirm the load remains within the rating at the reach and height you will use.
- Breakout force: check the force available to cut into a pile or pry compacted material.
- Bucket capacity and dump height: make sure the bucket can carry the material and clear the truck or wall.
- Load center: pallet forks move the load forward, reducing practical capacity compared with a bucket close to the coupler.
- Lift path: choose radial or vertical geometry according to your loading and backfilling work.
Do not select a machine solely because its ROC exceeds the nominal weight of your pallet. Include the pallet, attachment, load center, uneven ground and the margin required by your rental or site-safety rules.
Access, dimensions and transport
Measure the jobsite before you measure the machine
Record the clear width and height of every gate, doorway, alley and bridge crossing. Measure with the gate fully open and account for hinges, posts, mirrors, handrails and the attachment. A nominal 900 mm machine may not pass through a 900 mm opening once the operator platform or coupler is considered. If you need wide tracks for lower pressure, include the wider configuration in the measurement; the MT120 example grows from 904 mm to 1,030 mm with wide tracks.
Also measure turning space. A machine may pass through a gate but lack room to align with a trench or reverse without striking a wall. Sketch the route and identify slopes, soft shoulders and overhead obstructions.
Match operating weight to the trailer
Operating weight affects lift performance, trailer payload and tow-vehicle requirements. The MT100 example weighs 1,538 kg and the MT120 1,687 kg before you add a bucket, forks or other attachment. The S70 example weighs 1,312 kg. Those numbers are not interchangeable with legal payload: subtract the trailer’s empty weight and every item carried on it, then stay within the trailer, axle, hitch and tow-vehicle ratings.
A heavier track loader may require a larger trailer and tow vehicle even when its physical width fits the site. Check loading angle, deck length, tie-down points and the combined gross vehicle weight rating. If you only need a loader a few times per year, local delivery or rental may cost less than upgrading transport equipment.

Attachments and hydraulic compatibility
The loader is only as useful as the tools it can safely power. Both Bobcat and Caterpillar make attachment compatibility a central selection issue. Confirm the quick-attach interface before assuming an attachment will fit; coupler dimensions and locking mechanisms vary.

- the coupler dimensions and locking system;
- rated fork capacity and fork length;
- the load center used for that rating;
- the loader’s ROC with the forks installed;
- visibility and clearance at the intended lift height.
A fork frame rated for a heavy pallet does not increase the loader’s ROC. The machine, attachment and load must all be within their respective limits.
Buckets and hydraulic tools
For replacement or specialty buckets, check bucket width, heaped capacity, coupler fit and the material you will handle. A wide bucket can overload a small loader or make a narrow access route impossible. Hydraulic attachments require matching auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure; a tool designed for high flow may run slowly, overheat or fail on a low-flow circuit. Confirm the number and type of hydraulic connections, case drain requirements and electrical controls before delivery.
List the attachments you already own and those you expect to rent. A machine that accepts the fleet’s existing tools may produce more value than one with a slightly higher ROC but an incompatible interface.
Operator environment and daily productivity
Open ride-on mini track loaders provide visibility and a compact footprint, but the operator is exposed to weather, dust and flying debris. An enclosed skid-steer cab can improve comfort and productivity during long shifts, winter work or dusty demolition, provided the cab dimensions still fit the route and the machine has the visibility and controls your operators need.
Evaluate entry and exit, seat position, control layout, visibility to the coupler and attachment, lighting, heating or air conditioning and noise. These factors rarely appear in a single headline specification, yet fatigue and poor visibility can slow every cycle and increase the chance of striking a person or structure.

Why wheels often cost less to operate
Caterpillar reports that wheeled machines generally have lower operating cost and excel where firm ground and higher travel speed are required. Skid-steer tires are comparatively simple to inspect and replace, and a wheeled machine avoids track tension, rollers, idlers and sprocket wear. On abrasive concrete or asphalt, that simpler running gear can be a major advantage.

Track machines usually carry higher purchase and undercarriage costs. Rubber tracks, rollers, idlers and sprockets wear according to surface, load, turning technique and cleanliness. Mud packed into the undercarriage can accelerate wear, while hard, abrasive surfaces can shorten track life. Cleaning the undercarriage, checking tension and correcting damaged components are part of the operating routine.

Those costs can be offset when a tracked machine prevents ruts, works after rain or replaces several workers with a compact tool. Conversely, paying for tracks on a hardstand job that could be completed faster on tires may reduce productivity.
Calculate cost at your utilization rate
There is no universal current purchase price or rental rate that applies to every region, dealer or configuration. Compare the costs that are specific to your work:
- annual rental or finance payments;
- delivery and collection;
- fuel and routine service;
- tires or undercarriage parts and labor;
- attachment purchase or rental;
- trailer and tow-vehicle costs;
- downtime and the value of faster cycles or a longer weather window.
Estimate the number of operating hours and the surfaces those hours will cover. Occasional users should compare a local rental, including delivery, with the annual fixed cost of ownership. Frequent users should model wear by surface and keep records of actual fuel, service and attachment costs rather than relying on a category-wide assumption.

| Mixed attachment fleet | Model-dependent | Prioritize the quick-attach interface, hydraulic flow and pressure used by your existing tools. |
A step-by-step selection process
- Map the route. Measure the narrowest gate, doorway, turning area, overhead clearance and ground slope. Include the widest track or tire option and the attachment.
- Classify the surfaces. Separate saturated soil, finished turf, gravel, pavement and compacted fill. Note where the machine will spend most of its hours, not just where it will load.
- Define the heaviest real load. Record material density, pallet weight, load center, lift height and dump height. Use those values to check ROC, tipping load and breakout force.
- Choose the lift path. Select radial geometry for lower-height digging, backfilling and low truck beds; select vertical geometry when reach at full height is critical.
- Audit attachments. List every bucket, fork and hydraulic tool. Verify coupler fit, dimensions, rated capacity, hydraulic flow, pressure, electrical controls and any case-drain requirement.
- Check transport legality. Add operating weight, attachment, fuel, trailer tare and tie-down equipment. Compare the total with trailer, axle, hitch and tow-vehicle ratings.
- Price the ownership scenario. Include fuel, service, tires or undercarriage, delivery, storage and downtime. Compare that total with local rental for the hours you actually expect to work.
- Test the machine on the real surface. If possible, make a short loaded route, a turn and a lift to the intended height. Check visibility, stability, turf marking and gate clearance before committing.
Operating practices that protect the site and the machine
For mini track loaders
- Clean mud and debris from the undercarriage at the end of the shift.
- Inspect tracks, rollers, idlers and sprockets for damage or abnormal wear.
- Use three-point turns instead of stationary pivots on turf.
- Keep loads low while travelling and avoid side-hilling with a raised load.
- Use the narrow track configuration only when its ground-pressure benefit is not needed; wide tracks may protect soil but can prevent access.
For skid steers
- Check tire pressure and condition before working on finished surfaces.
- Use gradual turns and avoid spinning one side while stationary on turf or soft shoulders.
- Inspect the quick coupler and locking indicators every time an attachment is changed.
- Use the appropriate travel speed for the load and surface; high speed does not compensate for poor traction.
- Keep the bucket or forks low during travel and respect the attachment’s load rating.
When renting is the rational choice
Rental is often sensible when the work is infrequent, the required attachments change from project to project, or your trailer cannot safely carry the machine you need. It also lets you compare a tracked loader on wet ground with a wheeled skid steer on a hardstand before committing capital. Ask the rental company for the machine’s operating weight, ROC, ground pressure, width, hydraulic flow, coupler type and attachment ratings in the exact configuration being delivered.
Ownership becomes more compelling when utilization is high, the same attachments are used repeatedly and downtime or delivery delays have a measurable cost. Even then, reserve capacity for scheduled undercarriage or tire work and maintain a transport plan for the heaviest configuration.
Make the decision by constraint, not by category
Start with the constraint that can stop the job: access, soil strength, legal transport or attachment compatibility. If the route is narrow and the ground is soft, a mini track loader’s flotation and compact dimensions usually solve the biggest risks. If the route is firm and the work involves long travel, rapid cycles or enclosed-cab operation, a wheeled skid steer usually delivers more productive hours. Then confirm the exact model’s ROC, tipping load, lift path, hydraulics, operating weight and maintenance exposure against your measured jobsite and annual utilization.
