The right choice is the pump that matches the site duty: required flow at normal and peak inflow, total head, water chemistry, solids and abrasiveness, mine layout, available power, installation space, and the way the equipment will be serviced. A pump selected by its maximum flow or catalogue price alone can miss the operating point, wear rapidly, or be impossible to retrieve when the sump floods.
This guide explains how open-pit and underground systems are arranged, where the main pump families fit, which data to collect before requesting quotations, and how to compare complete pumping systems rather than isolated pump ratings.

What pumps are used for mine dewatering?
Mine water duties are commonly handled by submersible drainage pumps, end-suction centrifugal pumps, multistage pumps, and vertical turbine pumps. Progressive cavity and air-operated diaphragm pumps can solve more specialised transfer problems. Each family covers a different combination of flow, head, solids, installation and service requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The same family can be suitable in one mine and unsuitable in another. A face sump with abrasive water, a deep open-pit lift, a settled-water high-head station and a temporary transfer line do not present the same duty. Start with the water and hydraulic system, then select the pump arrangement.

How open-pit and underground dewatering differ
Open-pit arrangements
Open-pit water usually reports to sumps or low points that move as mining advances. A pump may be installed on the pit floor, on a pontoon or barge, or at a fixed drainage station. The lift can be direct if the depth and pipeline are manageable, or staged through booster pumps and intermediate stations as the pit deepens.
A floating installation can follow a changing water surface and avoid building a permanent station at an unstable edge. It also introduces requirements for mooring, flexible hoses or articulated pipe, cable management, access and retrieval. A fixed station may be easier to protect and service, but its location must remain useful as the pit geometry changes.
Underground arrangements
Underground water is commonly collected at working faces and local sumps, then moved through one or more stages toward larger drainage stations. Face pumps may be temporary and portable; trunk or station pumps handle the consolidated flow and higher static lifts. The system can therefore contain several pump duties rather than one pump sized for the entire mine.
Recommended Free Tools
Space, ventilation, access and emergency retrieval matter more in a confined heading or shaft. A pump that is straightforward to install in an open pit may be impractical underground if it cannot be moved through the access route or repaired without unacceptable production downtime.
Single lift versus staged lift
As Sulzer states in its Pumping solutions for mine water management brochure, “Depending on the mine depth, single lift or staging systems with booster pumps may be utilized.” A single high-lift arrangement can reduce the number of stations, while staged pumping can make each pump and pipeline section easier to operate within its useful range. The choice depends on head, flow, pressure, pipe routing, available station locations and maintenance strategy.
What factors should be considered when selecting a mining pump?
Collect the following information before comparing models. The purpose is to define a duty range and system arrangement, not merely a nominal pump size.
1. Define the fluid
- Water chemistry, including corrosive constituents that may affect wetted materials.
- Temperature where it can change viscosity, seals, motor loading or materials.
- Solids concentration and particle size.
- Abrasiveness, which drives impeller, casing, wear-plate and seal life.
- Viscosity and entrained air where the liquid is not clean water.
“Dirty water” is not a sufficient specification. Two streams with the same average solids percentage can produce very different wear if particle size, hardness and concentration differ. Sample the water during representative operating conditions, including after rainfall or a disturbance that changes the solids load.
2. Establish normal and peak flow
Average inflow is only one point in the duty. Record the expected normal flow, peak inflow, rate of change and any seasonal or operating events that increase water entry. Include the volume that must be removed to recover from a flooded or partially flooded area, not just the steady-state inflow.

Ask the supplier to show the pump’s operating point and acceptable range at both normal and peak conditions. A pump selected for a single optimistic flow can run away from its efficient region when the mine is dry or be overwhelmed during an inflow event.
3. Calculate total required head
Total head includes static lift plus losses in the pipeline and fittings, and the pressure required at the discharge point. Measure the actual elevation difference between the source water level and discharge, then document pipe length, diameter, material, bends, valves, changes in elevation and any restrictions. Pipeline design can alter friction losses enough to change the pump duty materially.
Do not select on static lift alone. Conversely, do not add an arbitrary safety margin without checking how it moves the operating point. Have the supplier confirm the complete system curve, pump curve, duty point and operating range for the proposed pipeline.
4. Map the mine system
- Open pit or underground, and how the water source moves as mining advances.
- Location and usable volume of collection sumps.
- Potential intermediate stations, booster locations and discharge points.
- Single lift, staged lift or pumps in series.
- Pipe routes, access restrictions and areas vulnerable to damage.
The best pump at the sump can still be a poor system choice if its discharge cannot connect to the next stage or if the pipeline requires pressure beyond the available equipment.
5. Confirm power and operating pattern
Document available electrical supply, generator capacity or other power sources, voltage, phase and starting limitations. Also state whether the pump will run continuously, intermittently, automatically by level control or only during temporary transfer operations.
Atlas Copco publishes comparison guidance on electric and diesel dewatering pumps, but the appropriate power source remains site-specific. Electric equipment may suit a permanent station with reliable supply; another location may require a mobile or independently powered arrangement. Compare fuel or electricity availability, emissions and ventilation requirements, controls, start-up reliability and refuelling or cable logistics.
6. Design for installation and retrieval
Check the physical envelope, lifting points, access route, lifting equipment, hose or pipe connections and cable protection. For a submerged pump, specify how it will be retrieved from a deep or contaminated sump without sending personnel into an unsafe area. For a dry installation, provide isolation, drainage and sufficient room to remove wear parts.
In remote or confined locations, service access is part of pump selection. A small efficiency advantage is not valuable if a blocked pump requires a long retrieval operation that stops production.

7. Include lifecycle support
- Expected wear-part life for the actual solids and abrasiveness.
- Inspection intervals and the tools required.
- Seal, bearing, impeller and liner replacement procedures.
- Local availability of critical spares and trained service personnel.
- Consequences of downtime and whether a standby pump is needed.
Compare the cost and duration of routine maintenance, not only the purchase price. A pump that is inexpensive to buy but difficult to access can have the higher operating cost.
Choosing among the main pump families
Submersible drainage pumps
Submersibles place the pump at the water source, making them useful for sumps, flooded areas, working faces and some open-pit installations. They avoid a long suction line and can be deployed as the excavation changes. Their compact format is particularly useful where a permanent dry station is not yet justified.
Selection still depends on head, flow, solids and abrasion. A pump that handles clear water may not tolerate abrasive soil. Confirm the maximum particle size, solids concentration, metallurgy, seal arrangement, motor cooling requirements and the method for lowering and retrieving the unit. Protect power cables from vehicle traffic, sharp rock and movement at the sump.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEnd-suction centrifugal pumps
End-suction centrifugals are used for mine-water transfer, staged lifts and booster stations. They can be installed as a fixed package with valves and instrumentation, or arranged for mobile duties. Wear-resistant versions are identified for more abrasive or corrosive water containing solids.
They are most useful when the station can provide a stable suction arrangement and enough room for inspection. Verify that the suction line, water level and inlet conditions support the proposed operating range; an otherwise suitable pump can perform poorly when the suction arrangement is undersized or frequently exposed to air.
Multistage pumps
Multistage pumps are used for pre-settled water and high-lift duties, including a single high-lift arrangement. Multiple impeller stages build head within one pump assembly. This can simplify a high-lift station, but the water generally needs better solids control than a rugged drainage pump at a dirty face.
Compare a multistage design with single-stage pumps in series or intermediate booster stations. The alternative may offer easier access, lower pressure per pipeline section or more flexible operation as mine depth changes. The correct choice depends on the complete hydraulic and maintenance plan.
Vertical turbine pumps
Vertical turbine pumps appear in some pit installations and mine-water stations where the source, intake and station layout support a vertical arrangement. They can be a good fit for a fixed station, but they are not a universal replacement for a submersible or horizontal pump.

Confirm the available station depth, intake submergence, column and shaft arrangement, lifting equipment and access for removing the rotating assembly. A changing pit floor or mobile water source may favour a different installation.
Progressive cavity pumps
SEEPEX describes progressive cavity pumps as an option for mine-water duties involving abrasive solids, varying pressure or difficult maintenance access. Treat that as manufacturer guidance rather than an independent performance comparison. Establish the actual solids, pressure range, speed, elastomer compatibility and maintenance procedure with the supplier before specifying this family.
Air-operated diaphragm pumps
Air-operated diaphragm pumps are portable and flexible for smaller transfers, temporary bypasses and locations where compressed air is already available. They are generally distinct from high-volume continuous dewatering. Check air supply capacity, hose arrangement, noise, flow requirement, duty duration and the cost of running the compressor before using one as a primary dewatering pump.
A practical pump-selection procedure
- Survey the water source. Measure or estimate normal and peak inflow, water levels, solids concentration and particle size. Record changes after rain, blasting, excavation or process events.
- Trace the discharge route. Mark source and discharge elevations, pipe lengths and diameters, fittings, valves, crossings, intermediate stations and any required discharge pressure.
- Build the duty range. State flow and total head at minimum, normal and peak conditions. Identify whether the pump must tolerate intermittent operation, changing water levels or emergency recovery.
- Choose the installation concept. Decide between submerged, dry, floating, fixed, mobile, single-lift and staged arrangements. Check physical access, lifting, power, ventilation and retrieval before requesting a model.
- Screen pump families. Eliminate families that cannot handle the solids, chemistry, head, flow or installation. Keep more than one viable arrangement where the mine layout permits it.
- Request complete-system confirmation. Ask each supplier to provide the pump curve, system curve, duty-point coverage, materials, solids limits, power demand, controls and expected operating range for the stated pipeline.
- Compare maintenance and downtime. Include wear parts, inspection access, retrieval time, local support, spares and standby philosophy. Price the consequences of a failed pump, not just the equipment invoice.
- Verify compliance before purchase. Confirm current curves, materials, certifications, mine requirements and approvals for the exact model and installation. The responsible mine engineer should approve the final specification.
Published capacity figures: how to interpret them
The following numbers are Sulzer product-family brochure specifications, not universal limits for mine pumps or independent mine-sector statistics. Sulzer’s February 2021 brochure also warns that information is subject to change without notice.
| Sulzer family | Published maximum flow | Published maximum head | Published solids statement | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| J/XJ series | Up to 5,400 US gpm | Up to 754 ft | Less than 5% solids | Use only as a family-level reference; confirm the exact model curve, solids definition and duty |
| XFP family | Up to 40,000 US gpm | Up to 330 ft | Less than 8% solids | Do not infer suitability from maximum flow; verify particle size, abrasiveness, head and operating point |
| J 10–350 MEX | Sulzer’s February 2021 brochure did not state a single family maximum | Sulzer’s February 2021 brochure did not state a single family maximum | Designed for water and dirty water mixed with light abrasive soil | Sulzer identifies these as MSHA-approved explosion-proof mine pumps in its brochure context; verify current approval and exact model |
These figures illustrate why a catalogue maximum is not a specification. The same family can have several models, and the stated maximum flow and head are not normally achieved simultaneously. Require the supplier to identify the model, impeller, speed, efficiency, power, solids limits and duty point for your installation.
Common selection mistakes and how to prevent them
Choosing by maximum flow
Maximum flow says little about performance at the required head. Prevent this error by providing the full pipeline and asking for the operating point at normal and peak inflow.
Using average inflow as the design case
Averages hide storm events, changing groundwater and sudden inflow after excavation. Record a duty range and decide how emergency inflow will be handled: additional pumps, standby capacity, storage volume or staged discharge.

Forgetting the pipeline
Long, narrow or heavily valved pipelines consume head. Document every significant fitting and elevation change. If the route changes, recalculate the system rather than assuming the old pump remains suitable.
Underestimating access and retrieval
A pump deep in a sump or confined heading must be recoverable with the equipment and personnel actually available. Provide lifting points, isolation and safe access, and keep critical spares where they can be reached.
Assuming brochure claims are independent tests
Manufacturer brochures are useful for layouts, product families and engineering considerations, but their comparisons and performance claims are not independent testing. Treat published figures as starting data and verify the current specification for the exact installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Before commissioning, confirm that the installed pipeline matches the design, valves are correctly oriented, the pump is secured, electrical protection and controls are tested, and the sump has enough volume to prevent repeated dry running or air ingestion. Check rotation where applicable and verify level controls, alarms and standby changeover.
During the first operating period, record flow, discharge pressure, motor current, starts, run hours, water level and vibration or noise. Compare those observations with the supplier’s expected duty. A persistent difference can indicate a blocked intake, unexpected friction, a leaking line, incorrect rotation, air entrainment or a pump operating away from its intended point.
Maintenance planning for mine dewatering pumps
Set inspection intervals from actual wear and duty conditions rather than a generic calendar alone. Inspect intake screens, impellers, wear components, seals, bearings, cables, hoses, couplings, valves and level controls. Trend motor current and discharge performance so gradual blockage or wear is detected before the pump fails.
Keep a written record of solids conditions, repairs, replaced parts and downtime. That record supports a better decision when comparing a harder-wearing pump, a different material, a larger sump, a parallel standby or a revised pipeline. In remote locations, stock the components whose absence would extend an otherwise simple repair into a production stoppage.

When to involve the supplier and responsible engineer
Request a formal review when the duty includes high lift, hazardous or classified areas, unusual chemistry, significant solids, a new staged system, a floating installation, or a discharge line whose pressure and routing are still changing. Provide the complete data package rather than asking for “a pump for mine water.”
Before specifying equipment, confirm current performance curves, materials, certifications, applicable mine requirements and installation details with the supplier and responsible engineer. This is especially important for the Sulzer figures cited above and for any MSHA or other approval claim, which applies to a named family and brochure context rather than automatically to every model or site.
