Meet Charlotte: The Six-Legged Construction Robot Aiming to Build Homes on Earth—and One Day on the Moon

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charlotte is a real, six-legged construction robot under development by Australia’s Crest Robotics and Earthbuilt Technology. Its system is designed to place soil, sand or other suitable material inside a fabric sleeve, compact it in layers and move around a building site as the walls rise. The developers’ headline goal—a 200-square-meter home in a day—is a target, not a verified record of a finished, approved house. Lunar construction is a longer-term research ambition, not a confirmed mission.

What Charlotte is—and what it is not

Charlotte combines Crest Robotics’ legged-robot, autonomy and control work with Earthbuilt Technology’s material delivery, fabric containment and compaction system. Crest describes the project as a lightweight autonomous construction robot and lists it as in development. The companies presented it at the 76th International Astronautical Congress in Sydney, held September 29 to October 3, 2025. Crest’s Charlotte project page and its company overview describe the project and its status.

That makes Charlotte a development-stage construction system—not an off-the-shelf homebuilding machine or a demonstrated commercial service. Its intended applications include remote or difficult Earth sites and, eventually, construction using material available on the Moon or another planetary surface.

How Charlotte’s wall-building system works

The approach is closer to automated earthbag construction than to conventional cement-based concrete printing. Rather than extruding a continuous bead of concrete into a freestanding wall, the system is intended to contain and compact loose material within a textile sleeve, building up successive layers.

  1. Plan the structure: A digital layout defines the wall path and construction sequence.
  2. Supply suitable material: The developers describe using materials such as sand, earth and crushed brick. That does not mean any soil or rubble will work; particle size, moisture, consistency and compaction all affect the result.
  3. Contain and place it: Material is delivered into a fabric sleeve as the robot follows the planned wall line.
  4. Compact each layer: The system compacts the fill before adding the next layer, producing a layered, fabric-confined wall.
  5. Reposition as the wall grows: Charlotte’s legs let it move around the site while its construction equipment continues the wall-building sequence.

Crest describes this operating concept on its Charlotte project page. The public information cited here does not establish a final material recipe, binder chemistry, structural certification, or building-code approval. Those details matter: a wall’s performance depends on the materials and method actually qualified for a specific use.

What the “home in one day” claim means

Crest says the aim is to construct a 200-square-meter home in one day—about 2,150 square feet. This is a developer-stated target, not an independently verified production rate. Coverage of the claim describes printing the walls within a day; the evidence does not show that Charlotte has completed a finished, code-approved home in 24 hours. ABC News Australia’s report describes the proposed homebuilding use.

The distinction is important. Even if a robot constructs a wall shell at the target rate, a home still needs the rest of its construction and approval process. The one-day figure should not be read as covering foundations, plumbing, electrical systems, windows and doors, a roof, finishes, utility connections, inspections or occupancy approval. Charlotte is being developed to automate a wall-building process; the public claim does not establish a move-in-ready house delivered in a day.

Why give a construction machine six legs?

A mobile hexapod could move without the rails or large fixed gantry used by some 3D printers. Crest presents the legged layout as a way to work on uneven terrain and to transport the machine in a compact form. In principle, legs can also help a machine reposition around a structure as it is built. These are design aims, not independently demonstrated advantages over other printer types. Crest discusses its robotics work on its R&D page.

Construction approach Potential advantage Trade-off
Charlotte-style walking robot Designed to move around a site without a fixed rail or full-size gantry, including on uneven ground. Legs, joints, navigation and safe movement near fresh walls add mechanical and control complexity; comparative performance data are not stated in Crest’s public material.
Gantry or portal printer Can provide constrained, repeatable movement on a prepared site. Requires a substantial frame and setup, and is tied to the area its structure can reach.
Wheeled or tracked mobile printer May suit prepared ground and avoid the many moving joints of a legged platform. May need flatter terrain and room to reposition around the growing structure.

Charlotte’s legs do not remove the ordinary challenges of site robotics. The machine must coordinate movement, material flow, power, sensing and wall placement. Uneven ground, a blocked feed, inaccurate localization or a misplaced foot near newly compacted material could interrupt work or affect the result. Public sources do not provide independent testing that establishes Charlotte’s speed, positional accuracy, reliability or energy use against these alternatives.

Could the process reduce construction emissions?

The proposed environmental case rests on using local soil, sand or recycled feedstock, potentially reducing the transport of conventional materials and the need for cement-intensive construction. Automated placement could also reduce material waste. Crest describes the project as low-carbon and uses near-zero-emissions language on its project page.

Those are potential benefits, not a measured lifecycle result. The public material cited here does not provide a peer-reviewed carbon assessment, a complete bill of materials, operating-energy figures, or a like-for-like comparison with a conventional home. Actual impacts would depend on the material mix, preparation and transport, the robot’s power source, wall durability and what other construction the building still requires. “Low-carbon” is therefore more defensible than “carbon-free.”

What has been demonstrated—and what remains a goal?

The evidence supports Charlotte as a publicly presented, development-stage project with a described six-legged platform and extrusion-and-compaction concept. Crest says it was unveiled at IAC 2025 and is seeking collaborators to develop, test and scale the system. The public information cited here describes intended capabilities; it does not document a completed, occupied, code-certified house or a commercial deployment.

  • Project status: Crest lists Charlotte as in development.
  • Public milestone: The project was presented at IAC 2025 in Sydney.
  • Stated target: The developers aim for a 200-square-meter home in a day, with the claim best understood as a wall-building target rather than a finished-house result.
  • Not established: The available sources do not verify commercial availability, structural approval in a jurisdiction, a confirmed launch date, spaceflight qualification or lunar operation.

Crest says Charlotte received NSW Government-backed support through the Space+ program delivered by SmartSat CRC. Public Crest and founder materials cite different dollar figures, which may refer to different stages or parts of the work; they should not be combined into a single grant total without confirmation. Crest’s R&D page describes the program support.

Why the Moon enters the picture

The lunar case is an example of in-situ resource utilization: using material already at a destination rather than transporting every tonne of construction feedstock from Earth. Lunar regolith could potentially serve as fill or aggregate for berms or walls. Construction robots might prepare protective structures before astronauts arrive, and a compact transport configuration could help address launch-volume constraints.

An IAC abstract associated with Charlotte describes autonomous earthbagged structures made with lunar regolith and frames lunar infrastructure as a target application. That supports calling lunar construction a research direction; it does not show that Charlotte has been selected for a mission or is ready to fly. The IAC abstract also refers to NASA’s broader Moon-to-Mars Planetary Autonomous Construction Technologies (MMPACT) vision. A connection to that vision is not the same as NASA selecting, owning or scheduling Charlotte for a lunar mission.

Why a lunar job would be much harder

The Moon is not simply a rough terrestrial site with less gravity. A system designed for Earth would need extensive changes and qualification before it could operate there.

  • Vacuum and temperature: Materials, seals, lubricants, electronics and any binder would need to tolerate vacuum and severe thermal conditions.
  • Dust and terrain: Abrasive regolith could damage joints, bearings, optics and seals. Uneven ground would challenge walking, traction and stable material placement.
  • Different material behavior: Earth-tested fill and fabric methods cannot be assumed to work with lunar grains, reduced gravity or the intended structure.
  • Autonomy and recovery: Communication limits and the cost of human intervention make fault detection and recovery critical. A failed leg, clogged feed or damaged sleeve could be difficult to repair.
  • Mission constraints: Mass, folded volume, power, radiation exposure and heat rejection all require engineering and qualification.
  • Habitat needs: A printed wall is not a pressurized, habitable base. Life support, pressure containment, airlocks, thermal control, power and radiation protection would need their own solutions and integration.

Charlotte’s public material discusses lunar regolith and future construction, but does not establish spaceflight qualification or a complete lunar operating architecture. Earlier lunar construction concepts, including NASA/JPL’s ATHLETE work, provide context for the field—not proof that Charlotte is flight-ready. See Ars Technica’s coverage of ATHLETE and lunar-base construction, the DFKI Mantis project and an i-SAIRAS paper on multi-robot lunar construction.

Who can use Charlotte now?

Crest’s public project page invites partners and collaborators; it does not present Charlotte as a product with a published price, standard deployment package or customer checkout route. The near-term path described publicly is development and collaboration with industry, research or government partners, not a homeowner buying a construction robot. Earthbuilt Technology is identified as the partner behind the material and compaction system, but the cited Charlotte sources do not provide a standalone purchase page or pricing for that system.

Crest’s website lists other robotic systems, including Gorilla and EMU, but these are not presented as substitutes for Charlotte’s mobile wall-building function. Project and company status are described on Charlotte’s project page and the Crest Robotics home page.

What to look for as the project develops

For construction firms, developers and researchers assessing whether Charlotte is moving from concept toward a usable system, the most informative next evidence would be measurable performance and qualification data—not another headline speed figure.

  • Material throughput and consistency, including how moisture, particle size and compaction are controlled.
  • Wall strength, settlement, durability and independent structural testing.
  • Positioning accuracy around a complete wall path, plus demonstrated safe movement near fresh construction.
  • Operating duration, energy use, setup needs and how humans supervise or recover the system when conditions change.
  • Field trials that disclose the site, material, structure completed and what work was included in the reported time.
  • For lunar use, regolith testing and qualification of the materials, mechanisms, autonomy and thermal and dust protection for spaceflight conditions.
