But the available evidence does not justify treating it as a premium Japanese-made knife or assuming that its cryogenic-treatment and long-lasting-sharpness claims have been independently proven.
Matsato is best understood as a Japanese-inspired, heavily marketed budget-to-midrange kitchen knife with mixed customer evidence. I would consider buying one only at a price I could comfortably write off, after checking the exact shipping and return terms at checkout. I would not buy it because an advertisement suggests that it is handmade in Japan, dramatically superior to ordinary stainless knives, or guaranteed to stay razor-sharp for a specified period.

Quick verdict
- Best for: Casual home cooks who want a compact, distinctive knife for vegetables, herbs, boneless meat, and everyday meal preparation.
- Less suitable for: Professional cooks, knife enthusiasts, or anyone specifically seeking Japanese manufacture, premium steel, a documented hardness rating, or independently measured edge retention.
- Material: 4CR14 stainless steel with a roasted-beech handle, according to Matsato’s support documentation.
- Biggest concern: The marketing is much stronger than the independent technical evidence.
- Buying recommendation: Proceed cautiously. Check the exact offer and return policy, preserve the packaging, and do not assume marketplace listings are authorized.
What is a Matsato knife?
The Matsato knife is a compact santoku-style or Japanese-inspired chef knife sold primarily through direct-response websites. Matsato’s support material identifies the main knife as a 4CR14 stainless-steel blade with a roasted-beech handle. Its sales pages emphasize a laser-carved hole near the index finger and describe the design as Japanese-inspired.
That description matters. “Japanese-inspired” is not the same as “made in Japan,” “hand-forged in Japan,” or “made by Japanese blacksmiths.” One Matsato-controlled FAQ explicitly says the knife is not manufactured in Japan and indicates that production and shipping may occur outside Japan. There is no reliable evidence in the reviewed material identifying a Japanese factory or establishing Japanese country of origin.

So the most accurate description is a Japanese-inspired direct-to-consumer kitchen knife. Calling it an authentic Japanese knife would overstate what the available documentation supports.
Matsato knife specifications
The clearest published specifications come from Matsato’s support documentation:
| Specification | Published information |
|---|---|
| Blade steel | 4CR14 stainless steel |
| Handle | Roasted beech wood |
| Total length | 28 cm |
| Blade length | 14.8 cm |
| Blade height | 5 cm |
| Weight | 176 g |
| Stated curve angle | 38 degrees |
| Design features | Japanese-inspired profile and a laser-carved index-finger hole, according to Matsato |
The 14.8 cm blade is relatively compact compared with many Western chef’s knives, which commonly use blades around 20 cm. That can be convenient for smaller hands, tight kitchen spaces, and controlled vegetable work. It also means the knife may feel less natural to someone accustomed to a long chef’s knife for large ingredients or broad slicing motions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The published “38-degree curve angle” should not automatically be interpreted as a 38-degree sharpening angle. Matsato’s wording describes the knife’s curve or profile, not a verified edge angle. The company does not publish a verifiable Rockwell-hardness figure or a detailed independent technical datasheet in the material reviewed.
What does 4CR14 steel tell you?
4CR14 is a common corrosion-resistant stainless-steel designation. It can be entirely serviceable in an everyday kitchen, especially when the blade is properly heat-treated and ground. The steel name alone, however, does not establish premium edge retention, exceptional hardness, Japanese manufacture, or superior craftsmanship.
Actual performance depends on several factors:
- the heat treatment applied to the steel;
- the finished hardness;
- blade thickness and geometry;
- the quality and consistency of the grind;
- the sharpening angle;
- the cutting board and ingredients used; and
- how the knife is washed, stored, and resharpened.
Matsato does not provide a verifiable Rockwell-hardness number in the reviewed specifications. Without that information or independent edge-retention testing, it is not possible to place the knife confidently alongside premium Japanese knives made from better-documented steels.
That does not mean a Matsato knife cannot cut well. A properly sharpened 4CR14 blade can handle normal kitchen work. It means the buyer should judge the knife as a reasonably equipped everyday tool, not as a technically proven high-performance blade.
Is Matsato’s cryogenic or “ice-hardening” claim credible?
Matsato advertises a 138-step production process and says its knives receive cryogenic treatment at temperatures below -148°F. The company describes this as a way to improve wear resistance, convert retained austenite toward martensite, and prolong sharpness. Its pages also use terms such as “ice-hardened,” “premium beech wood,” and “individually checked.”
Cryogenic treatment is a real category of metallurgical processing. The general concept is plausible: carefully controlled cooling can affect the structure and properties of some steels. But three separate questions must not be confused:

- 【Black Non-Stick & Anti-Rust Coating】 The black coating on the stainless steel surface does a good job of stopping the knives from oxidizing in contact with oxygen in the air, so the kitchen knife set will remain non-stick and rust-proof for years to come.
- 【Amazing Built-in Knife Sharpener】 Kitchen knife sets with built-in sharpeners are very convenient and you can sharpen your knives with one hand. It saves you the trouble of finding a sharpener and sharpening your knives on a whetstone, which is great invention.

- Is cryogenic treatment a real process? Yes.
- Does Matsato advertise that its knives receive such treatment? Yes.
- Has independent testing established that production Matsato knives receive the treatment and outperform comparable knives? That was not established by the research reviewed for this article.
The available support for the Matsato-specific claims is the company’s own marketing and product copy. The research did not locate an independent hardness report, metallurgical certificate, factory audit, controlled edge-retention test, or laboratory comparison of Matsato production blades.
Accordingly, I would not promise that the knife stays sharp for several months, retains a razor edge through a stated number of meals, or outlasts competing knives. Those outcomes vary with use even when a knife’s specifications are well documented.

What do customers say?
The customer evidence is mixed. When crawled, Matsato’s Trustpilot profile displayed approximately 17,910 reviews and a TrustScore of 4.5 out of 5. The displayed distribution was approximately 71% five-star, 11% four-star, 6% three-star, 3% two-star, and 9% one-star.
That is a substantial amount of feedback, but it is not the same as a controlled product test. Trustpilot reviews are self-selected, anyone can write a review, and the profile includes company replies. The displayed count and score can also change over time. Positive reviews mention sharpness, balance, comfort, and straightforward ordering. Negative reviews mention lengthy delivery delays, tracking problems, knives that arrived dull, rapid dulling, cracked handles, and chipped blades.
There is another limitation: Matsato states that it generally does not publish negative reviews on its own website. That makes the brand’s on-site testimonials unsuitable as a complete picture of customer experience.
Knife-community discussion is more skeptical. A BladeForums discussion identifies the product as a 4CR14 knife, questions the manufacturing location, and criticizes the heavy discounting and promotional language. Reddit discussions raise similar concerns about value, steel quality, and resemblance to other heavily advertised knives. These discussions are anecdotal, and some participants liked their knives while others had not personally used one, so they should be treated as signals rather than proof.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. That is one hands-on account, not laboratory evidence. It is useful because it illustrates the downside reported by some buyers, but it cannot establish how every Matsato knife performs.
The fairest conclusion is that some owners may receive a sharp, comfortable, adequate kitchen knife, while the available evidence does not establish consistent long-term edge retention or premium construction across all units.
Price and discount claims: why the checkout page matters
Matsato uses promotional pricing, bundles, countdown-style offers, and large advertised discounts. Landing pages can display changing prices, so a fixed “regular price,” “today’s price,” or percentage discount should be treated as temporary unless you verify it at checkout.

Before paying, compare the Matsato knife price shown on the exact checkout page with the total after shipping, taxes, and any bundle selections. Check whether the offer automatically adds accessories, whether the discount requires a specific quantity, and whether the page uses a recurring-payment or subscription term. Do not rely on an advertisement viewed earlier in the day.
Large discounts are not automatically evidence of fraud. They are, however, a reason to compare the final price with ordinary 4CR14 kitchen knives from established retailers. A knife can be usable and still be poor value if the buyer pays a premium for unsupported claims.
Shipping and returns: the main financial risk
Matsato’s official terms state that orders are generally processed within 1–3 business days, with estimated delivery of 4–14 business days. Carrier delays and customs issues can extend that period. A separate current landing page showed different U.S. shipping estimates and a $9.95 standard shipping charge, which demonstrates that shipping information can vary by site version, country, or promotional offer.
The official return policy describes a 60-day return period for physical products purchased through the Matsato website. The buyer must contact support, obtain an RMA and return address, and send the product back in the required condition and packaging. The buyer is responsible for return shipping, while original shipping costs are not refundable. Used or diminished-value products may be refused or refunded at a reduced amount.
This creates an important practical conflict for anyone trying to test edge retention: using the knife may affect its return eligibility. If you order one, take these steps:
Recommended Free Tools
- Save the box, inserts, labels, and all packaging until you decide to keep the knife.
- Photograph the package and knife when they arrive, especially if there is visible damage.
- Read the return terms attached to the exact checkout domain and your country.
- Ask support for written return instructions and the RMA before shipping anything back.
- Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number for any return.
- Do not assume that an advertised 60-day period means a used knife can be returned for a full refund.
For the current wording, check the Matsato knife official return policy before ordering rather than relying on a summary in an advertisement.
Is Matsato a scam?
Calling Matsato simply a scam would go beyond the evidence. The brand operates sales and support pages, publishes product specifications and return terms, and has a substantial third-party review profile.
There are still legitimate reasons for caution:
- aggressive countdown and discount marketing;
- multiple Matsato-branded domains with inconsistent page language;
- unclear manufacturing provenance;
- no independent product testing located in this review;
- customer reports involving delivery, tracking, and quality problems; and
- return shipping and possible diminished-value deductions.
The most defensible description is a heavily marketed direct-to-consumer knife with mixed evidence and elevated purchase-risk considerations. That is different from saying the product is imaginary or that every customer will have a bad experience. It is also very different from calling it an independently proven premium Japanese knife.
What about Matsato knives on Amazon?
Matsato-controlled pages repeatedly state that the genuine product is sold through the official website and not through Amazon, retail stores, or third-party marketplaces. Those pages warn that unauthorized marketplace listings may be counterfeit or may not include the genuine guarantee.

Shoppers may nevertheless encounter Matsato-branded or visually similar knives on Amazon and other marketplaces. No authorized Amazon seller or official Amazon product page was verified in the reviewed research. Therefore, an Amazon listing should not be assumed to be genuine merely because its title includes “Matsato.”
If you search Matsato knife on a marketplace, treat the result as an unverified listing unless Matsato has clearly confirmed the seller and authorization. Compare the product photographs, specifications, packaging, seller identity, return terms, and warranty language. A low price is not evidence of authenticity.
For that reason, I would not use an Amazon listing as a shortcut around Matsato’s official purchasing channel. If the brand says Amazon is unauthorized, the buyer may have difficulty obtaining the brand’s stated guarantee or support for a marketplace purchase.
Who should buy a Matsato knife?
Matsato may be reasonable for a casual home cook who:
- wants a compact knife for vegetables, herbs, boneless meat, and routine meal preparation;
- likes the finger-hole design and finds it comfortable;
- understands that 4CR14 is an everyday stainless steel rather than a premium specification;
- is comfortable buying from a direct-to-consumer website;
- has checked the final price and return costs; and
- can accept the possibility that sharpening may be needed sooner than expected.
I would look elsewhere if you are a professional cook who needs predictable performance, a knife enthusiast seeking documented metallurgy, or a buyer who specifically wants a Japanese-made blade. In those cases, look for a clearly identified manufacturer, country of origin, steel designation, hardness range, warranty, and independent reviews that explain testing conditions.
Care, sharpening, and safe use
The knife’s actual service life will depend heavily on maintenance. Matsato’s marketing claims do not remove ordinary knife-care requirements.
- Use a suitable board: Wood or a quality plastic board is preferable to glass, stone, ceramic, or other hard surfaces that can damage an edge.
- Wash carefully: Hand-wash and dry the knife unless the instructions supplied with your exact model say otherwise. Do not leave it soaking in a sink.
- Store the blade safely: Use a blade guard, knife block, or secure magnetic storage rather than allowing the edge to strike other utensils.
- Avoid prying and twisting: A kitchen knife is not a screwdriver or wedge.
- Keep it away from bones: Do not use this knife as a cleaver or for chopping bones. Avoid hard frozen foods unless the manufacturer specifically permits them.
- Protect the handle: Because the handle is identified as roasted beech wood, prolonged soaking and harsh dishwasher cycles may shorten its useful life. Food-safe mineral oil may be appropriate for unfinished wood, but follow the instructions for the exact handle finish.
- Sharpen appropriately: A whetstone or reputable sharpening service gives more control than forcing a knife through an aggressive pull-through sharpener. Sharpening frequency depends on use, board material, and the knife’s edge geometry.
Useful supporting equipment includes a magnetic knife strip, a wooden knife block, a knife blade guard, a whetstone for kitchen knives, and food-safe mineral oil for wood handles. A suitable best cutting board for chef knives is also more important than many buyers realize: the wrong board can make a good edge feel dull quickly.
If you prefer not to sharpen at home, compare a professional knife sharpening service and ask what edge angle and finish it will apply. A service that can explain its process is preferable to one that treats every knife identically.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How I would decide before buying
- Define the use: If you need an everyday vegetable and boneless-meat knife, the design may be suitable. If you need bone chopping, heavy-duty work, or professional consistency, skip it.
- Ignore the headline discount: Compare the final delivered cost with ordinary 4CR14 knives and better-documented alternatives.
- Read the specifications: Confirm that the listing describes the same 4CR14, 14.8 cm blade and 176 g model rather than a different bundle or variant.
- Check origin wording: Treat “Japanese-inspired” as design language, not evidence of Japanese manufacture.
- Assess the evidence: Brand claims about 138 production steps and cryogenic treatment are not substitutes for hardness data or independent testing.
- Read the return policy: Pay particular attention to used-product deductions, return shipping, RMA requirements, and the refund of original shipping.
- Save evidence: Keep screenshots of the offer, checkout total, shipping estimate, and policy version.
- Inspect immediately: Check the blade, edge, handle, and packaging as soon as it arrives. Photograph defects before using it.
Final assessment
Matsato probably can cut food. The available evidence does not show that it is necessarily defective, imaginary, or unusable. But it also does not support the stronger impression created by some of its advertising: that buyers are receiving a premium, Japanese-made, independently validated knife with proven long-term edge retention.

- 【SHARP & RUST-RESISTANT】 Each blade in this Kitchen Utility Knives set is crafted from high carbon stainless steel with advanced OPD non-stick coating — food releases cleanly, rust stays away, and cleanup takes seconds. Fully dishwasher safe for easy maintenance after every meal.
- 【EFFORTLESS PRECISION CUTTING】 Engineered with a 0.618 blade ratio for a perfectly balanced cut — smooth on the push, effortless on the pull. The ergonomic handle fits naturally in your hand, reducing wrist fatigue for confident control through every slice and chop.
- 【PERFECT FOR GIFTING】 Practical enough for everyday use, elegant enough for any occasion — a thoughtful housewarming, wedding, or apartment essential for anyone who loves to cook. Arrives ready to impress, no wrapping needed.
The sensible purchase frame is therefore modest. Consider Matsato only as a potentially adequate direct-to-consumer kitchen knife. Buy at a price that reflects uncertainty, verify the exact terms, and expect normal maintenance. If your priority is documented steel performance, known origin, or dependable professional-level edge retention, choose a knife with transparent specifications and independent testing instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Matsato knife made in Japan?
There is no evidence in the reviewed material that it is made in Japan. A Matsato-controlled FAQ describes it as Japanese-inspired and says it is not manufactured in Japan. Production and shipping may occur outside Japan.
What steel does the Matsato knife use?
Matsato’s support documentation identifies the main knife as 4CR14 stainless steel. That is a common corrosion-resistant stainless steel, but the designation alone does not prove premium hardness or exceptional edge retention.
Does Matsato’s cryogenic treatment guarantee a sharper-lasting blade?
No. Cryogenic processing is a real metallurgical technique, but Matsato-specific treatment, hardness, and edge-retention superiority were not independently verified in the reviewed research.
Can I return a used Matsato knife?
Matsato’s current official policy describes a 60-day return period, but the buyer must obtain an RMA, return the product in the required condition and packaging, and pay return shipping. Used or diminished-value products may be refused or refunded at a reduced amount. Check the policy for the exact checkout domain before ordering.
Are Matsato knives on Amazon authentic?
Do not assume they are. Matsato-controlled pages say the genuine product is sold through the official website and that Amazon and other marketplaces are unauthorized. No authorized Amazon seller was verified in the reviewed research.
Is Matsato worth buying?
It may be adequate for a casual home cook who wants a compact everyday knife and accepts uncertainty about long-term performance. It is a weaker choice for anyone seeking Japanese manufacture, premium documented steel, or independently tested edge retention.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Matsato is a plausible everyday kitchen knife, but its premium marketing is not backed by enough independent evidence. Proceed cautiously, compare the delivered price with transparent alternatives, verify the exact return terms, and do not confuse “Japanese-inspired” with “made in Japan.”
