Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose the platform that matches the tools you need and the batteries you already own. Makita 18V LXT is the broader system, with Makita reporting more than 350 products in the U.S. in 2026. Makita 40V max XGT is a separate system positioned for higher-demand applications, with more than 170 U.S. products reported in 2026. Those counts and positioning statements come from Makita, not from an independent head-to-head test.
The practical decision is therefore not “18 volts or 40 volts?” in isolation. First check your existing batteries, then verify that the exact saws, grinders, fastening tools, outdoor equipment or other products you need are available in that platform. Finally account for the batteries, chargers and workflow a new system requires. LXT and XGT batteries do not interchange in tools.

The short answer
For most contractors building around a wide range of cordless tools, 18V LXT is the easier starting point when its available tools meet the workload. Makita says the LXT system exceeds 350 products in the United States in 2026, giving it the larger stated catalog. If you already own LXT batteries, extending that system normally avoids buying a second set of packs and chargers.
Choose 40V max XGT when the specific tools you need are in XGT and your work fits Makita’s stated higher-demand positioning. XGT is a separate battery ecosystem, so moving to it means accepting separate batteries and tool compatibility. Some XGT tools can combine two XGT batteries to power 80V max products, but that does not make XGT batteries usable in LXT tools.

There is one useful charging connection: Makita’s ADP10 adapter lets an XGT charger charge LXT batteries. It is a charger-to-battery arrangement only; it does not turn an LXT battery into an XGT battery or make either platform’s tool accept the other platform’s pack.
What LXT and XGT actually are
18V LXT
LXT is Makita’s 18V slide-style battery platform. Makita describes it as a broad compatible 18V system and reports more than 350 LXT products in the U.S. in 2026. LXT batteries also support Makita products that use two 18V packs together, described by Makita as 36V (18V X2) tools.
The practical benefit of that breadth is choice. A contractor can keep one battery family while adding different categories of tools, provided each exact product is an LXT model. The system count is a manufacturer-reported total, not a promise that every product is stocked locally or available in every country.
40V max XGT
XGT is Makita’s separate 40V max platform. Makita says it is engineered for higher-demand applications and reports more than 170 XGT products in the U.S. in 2026. Some products use two XGT batteries together as an 80V max system, identified by Makita as 40V max X2.
That higher-voltage architecture can be relevant when the exact tool and task call for it, but voltage by itself is not a performance test. A 40V max label does not establish that every XGT equivalent will deliver more useful cutting speed, runtime, durability or ergonomics than every LXT model. Compare the actual models and their official specifications for your work.
Battery and tool compatibility: the boundary you must not cross
Makita’s compatibility rules are platform-specific. Treat LXT and XGT as two different battery systems, even though they come from the same manufacturer.

| Battery or tool | Compatible products | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| 18V LXT battery | LXT tools, including products identified as 36V (18V X2) when two LXT batteries are required | It does not power an XGT tool |
| 40V max XGT battery | XGT tools, including products identified as 80V max (40V max X2) when two XGT batteries are required | It does not power an LXT tool |
| Standard LXT charger | LXT batteries | It is not a stated method for charging XGT batteries |
| XGT charger | XGT batteries; LXT batteries when used with the ADP10 adapter | It does not provide cross-platform tool compatibility |
These rules are from Makita’s platform compatibility information. Do not infer compatibility from the battery’s physical appearance, nominal voltage or the fact that both systems use slide-on packs. Use the tool and charger documentation for the exact model.

The final two rows are decision guidance based on Makita’s descriptions and compatibility rules. They are not a claim that one platform is universally superior.
A step-by-step way to choose
1. Inventory the batteries and chargers already on your truck
Write down every battery family you own, the number of usable packs and the chargers assigned to them. If your current fleet is LXT, an LXT replacement or addition can use that investment. If your batteries are worn, count only packs you would genuinely keep in service; a nearly unusable battery should not determine a long-term platform decision.
If you own no Makita batteries, treat both systems as new purchases. In that case, start with the work and the exact tool list rather than choosing by voltage label.
2. List the exact tools your work requires
Separate essential tools from occasional tools. Include the particular saw, grinder, rotary hammer, impact tool, vacuum, lighting product or outdoor machine you need, not merely a category name. Then verify whether each exact model is offered in LXT, XGT or both.
Makita’s 2026 U.S. counts show that LXT has the larger stated lineup, but a larger catalog does not guarantee that your specialty tool is in LXT. Conversely, XGT’s smaller stated catalog may contain the model that best fits a high-demand operation. Availability can differ by region and can change over time.

3. Classify the workload
Describe the hardest normal task, not the easiest task you perform. Note the material, duty cycle, number of cuts or fasteners per shift, expected run time between charging opportunities and whether the tool will be shared by a crew. This prevents a nominal voltage comparison from substituting for a real workload analysis.
Use XGT’s higher-demand positioning as a reason to investigate the exact XGT model for demanding work, not as proof that every XGT tool is the better choice. If your work is adequately served by the LXT models you need, the larger system and existing batteries may have greater practical value.
4. Price the complete ownership package
Do not compare bare tools alone. For each platform, list the number of batteries needed for a productive rotation, chargers, any adapters, spare packs for a second crew and the cost of replacing the system if a tool is unavailable in your chosen platform.
Recommended Free Tools
| Cost item | Questions to answer before buying |
|---|---|
| Existing batteries | How many usable packs can remain in service, and are they the correct platform? |
| New batteries | How many packs are required to keep the tool working while another pack charges? |
| Chargers | Do your current chargers serve the selected platform, or will you need XGT, LXT or both? |
| ADP10 adapter | Would an XGT charger charging LXT batteries simplify a mixed charging station? |
| Replacement and expansion | Will future tools you expect to add be available in the same platform? |
| Downtime | What is the operational cost if a required tool has no battery-compatible replacement on site? |
The supplied platform information does not provide standardized equivalent-tool prices, runtime figures or independent performance measurements. Build your budget from current prices and official specifications for the exact models you intend to purchase.
5. Decide whether a second platform is justified
A second platform can make sense when one system covers general work and the other supplies a particular high-demand tool that is not available, or not suitable, in the first system. It also creates additional batteries, chargers, storage and inventory rules. Record that recurring overhead before treating a single specialty tool as a reason to change every battery in the fleet.
When LXT is the more practical choice
You already own LXT batteries
If your serviceable batteries and chargers are LXT, staying with LXT for compatible additions preserves the value of that equipment. The decision is especially straightforward when the tools on your list are all available in LXT and your workload does not require investigating a particular XGT model.

You need a broad mix of tools
Makita reports more than 350 LXT products in the U.S. in 2026, compared with more than 170 XGT products. That difference does not measure quality, but it does indicate a larger stated selection from which to build a mixed trade or maintenance fleet. Check local and regional availability for the products that matter to you.

You want one battery rule for a crew
A single platform reduces the chance that a worker arrives with the wrong pack or that a charger is left at another job. The operational benefit depends on the tools your crew actually uses; do not assume every Makita cordless product belongs to LXT.
When XGT deserves serious consideration
Your required tool is an XGT model
Start with the actual tool. If the XGT version is the model that meets the manufacturer’s published requirements for your task, evaluate it on its own specifications and the batteries it needs. The existence of an LXT product in the same broad category does not establish equivalence.
Your work is consistently high demand
Makita positions XGT for higher-demand applications and states that some 80V max products use two XGT batteries. That makes XGT worth investigating for sustained, heavy work where the designated tool and battery configuration fit the job. It remains necessary to verify the exact model’s runtime, weight, capacity and operating requirements; the platform statement does not supply those comparisons.
You are starting a new fleet
With no existing battery investment, the switching penalty is lower. Compare the complete XGT and LXT tool lists you need, how many packs each tool requires, charging logistics and the likelihood of adding more tools later. A smaller system can still be the right choice if it contains the products that define your workload.

ADP10 is a charging bridge, not a tool-platform bridge. Makita says an XGT charger can charge LXT batteries when the ADP10 adapter is used. This can help a crew that owns an XGT charger but still operates LXT tools or keeps LXT packs as part of its inventory.

- Confirm that the battery you intend to charge is an LXT battery and that the charger is an XGT charger compatible with the ADP10 arrangement.
- Attach the ADP10 according to the adapter’s instructions, then install the LXT battery as directed.
- Charge the battery using the charger’s normal indicators and procedure.
- Remove the battery and adapter as instructed when charging is complete.
- Return the LXT battery only to an LXT tool. Do not attempt to install it in an XGT tool.
ADP10 does not let an XGT battery run an LXT tool, and it does not let an LXT battery run an XGT tool. It only addresses charging. If your crew regularly uses both systems, label chargers, adapters and battery shelves so a charging convenience does not become a tool-compatibility mistake.
Planning for 36V and 80V max products
LXT two-battery tools
Makita identifies some LXT products as 36V (18V X2). These tools use two LXT batteries together. They remain LXT products; the two-pack configuration does not make them compatible with XGT batteries or chargers as a tool power source.
XGT two-battery tools
Makita identifies some XGT products as 80V max (40V max X2). These tools use two XGT batteries together. They remain XGT products and require the specified XGT battery arrangement. Do not substitute one LXT pack, one XGT pack or an adapter for the required configuration.
When comparing a two-battery product with a single-battery product, include the number and weight of packs in your job-site plan. The platform labels alone do not establish a tool’s runtime, balance or productivity.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming higher voltage automatically wins: Voltage is not an independent performance result. Compare the exact tools, specifications and task requirements.
- Buying a bare tool before checking the battery family: Confirm whether the listing is LXT or XGT before ordering. The same broad tool category can exist in separate systems.
- Confusing charger compatibility with tool compatibility: ADP10 can let an XGT charger charge an LXT battery; it does not make the battery interchangeable in tools.
- Counting every battery as usable capacity: Separate healthy packs from batteries that no longer support a productive shift.
- Using the U.S. product count as a local stock guarantee: The 350-plus and 170-plus figures are Makita’s U.S. system counts for 2026. Regional catalogs and availability may differ.
- Expecting a platform count to answer a model-level question: A larger catalog does not prove that a particular LXT tool outperforms, weighs less or costs less than an XGT counterpart.
- Creating an unmarked mixed fleet: If both systems are present, label packs, chargers and tool cases by platform and train users on the compatibility boundary.
Managing a two-platform construction crew
If you intentionally operate both systems, assign each platform a job rather than allowing batteries to circulate randomly. For example, designate LXT for the tools already standardized across a crew and XGT for the specific higher-demand equipment that justified the second system. Keep a written inventory of batteries, chargers and two-battery tools.
At the end of a shift, count packs by platform, record damaged or missing batteries and return each pack to the correct charging area. An XGT charging station with ADP10 may reduce the number of charger types needed for LXT batteries, but it does not remove the need to stock and identify the correct batteries for each tool.
Makita’s BCC01 charging case can be considered where a crew needs a managed charging setup for multiple batteries. The stated fit in this context is LXT charging with ADP10 adapters. Confirm the case’s current instructions and capacity before designing a fleet around it.

Makita’s official U.S. platform pages establish the compatibility rules, the stated product counts and the broad positioning of each system. They do not provide a standardized LXT-versus-XGT test for equivalent tools. The available material therefore does not establish a universal winner for runtime, cutting speed, fastening performance, weight, ergonomics, price or long-term durability.
For a model-level purchase, compare the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact tools, including battery requirement, rated capacity, dimensions, weight with battery, operating modes and charging requirements. Then evaluate those figures against your material, duty cycle and transport constraints. A platform decision is sound when it solves the work you actually perform while keeping batteries and charging manageable.
Quick Recap
A final decision checklist
- Have you listed the exact tools, rather than only tool categories?
- Do you know whether each required model is LXT, XGT or available in both?
- Which usable batteries and chargers do you already own?
- Will any required tool use two LXT batteries for 36V (18V X2) or two XGT batteries for 80V max (40V max X2)?
- Have you budgeted batteries, chargers, adapters and spare packs, not just bare tools?
- Does the workload justify investigating XGT’s higher-demand positioning?
- Have you checked current regional availability instead of relying only on Makita’s U.S. system counts?
- If you will mix systems, have you planned labeling, storage and charging procedures?
- Are you treating ADP10 as a charging solution only?
- Have you avoided claiming a performance advantage that the exact model specifications or an independent test do not establish?
