Turn an inverted tomato cage into a small cone-shaped Christmas tree by gathering the prongs into a peak, securing them, and wrapping the frame with greenery. Add lights and decorations if you like, then choose a porch or yard location that suits the materials and power setup.
What you’ll need
- A tomato cage
- Artificial evergreen garland, or fresh or faux greenery with zip ties
- A zip tie to secure the cage’s peak
- Christmas string lights, if you want an illuminated tree
- Ornaments, ribbon, and a bow or topper
- Landscape pins if you plan to anchor the tree in a yard
Choose garland and other materials to suit the cage and the fullness you want; the amount needed varies by frame and style. Lowe’s notes that item costs and availability vary by market. How to make the tomato cage tree

Turn the cage upside down
Set the cage with its prongs pointing upward. The wider base will sit on the ground, and the prongs will form the tree’s top.

Shape and secure the peak
Bring the prongs together into a cone-shaped point and fasten them with a zip tie. Trim or tuck any excess tie so it does not catch on the greenery.

Wrap the frame with greenery
Starting near the top, wrap artificial garland around the cage and work down toward the base. Overlap the rows and adjust them as you go to cover the metal frame. If using fresh or faux greenery instead, attach it to the cage with zip ties and distribute it around the frame.

Add lights if desired
For a lit tree, wrap string lights around the greenery, beginning near the bottom as in the Lowe’s tutorial. Follow the strand maker’s directions for installation and for how many strands may be connected.

Decorate the tree
Hang ornaments and wrap ribbon around the greenery. Finish with a bow or topper, securing decorations so they stay in place without pulling the tree off balance.

Choose a location and set it in place
Display the tree on a porch or in a yard. For a yard installation, landscape pins can help secure the base to the ground; the tutorials do not establish that a particular setup will resist wind.

Choose greenery and placement to suit your display
Artificial garland or fresh greenery
Artificial garland offers a convenient option that can be packed away and reused. Fresh evergreen clippings provide a natural-material alternative when available. The cited tutorials describe both approaches but do not compare their durability or establish how long fresh greenery will last.
Porch or yard
A covered porch can limit exposure compared with an open yard. For yard placement, consider anchoring the base with landscape pins. Neither the tutorials nor the available guidance establish weatherproofing or a guaranteed level of stability, so do not assume the greenery, decorations, or frame will withstand outdoor conditions.

Unlit or lit
An unlit tree avoids the need for an electrical connection. If you add lights, use strands labeled for the location: outdoor use for an outdoor display. For outdoor power, plug into a GFCI-protected outlet and use an extension cord suitable for that setting and in good condition.

Before installing lights, inspect the strands and cords and discard damaged items. Use lights tested by a recognized laboratory, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The U.S. Fire Administration says, “Read manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect.” It also reports that “Almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems,” citing NFPA; the USFA page was last reviewed December 8, 2023, and does not identify the statistic’s underlying study year. The USFA recommends keeping Christmas trees at least three feet from heat sources and ensuring they do not block exits. Applying that general tree guidance to this smaller decoration is a prudent placement choice: leave space around the display and keep paths and exits clear.
