Choose the grade shown in your plans for the specific member, then match the stamp’s species group, dimensions, length and applicable local requirements. There is no single “best” framing grade for every board. Light wall framing, vertical studs, joists, rafters, headers and beams use different lumber categories, and a grade such as No. 2 is suitable only when it is listed for that category and design.
A grade is a limit on characteristics that affect strength and utility—not a simple cosmetic ranking. Appearance, structural capacity, species group, member size, span, spacing, loads and support conditions all matter. Use the explanations below to read a grade stamp and buy boards that match the project rather than substituting on the basis of looks.

What a lumber grade actually tells you
Dimension-lumber grading rules set limits on natural characteristics and manufacturing imperfections that can affect a piece’s strength and usefulness. Depending on the grading program, lumber may be evaluated by a trained visual grader, by digital scanning or by another mechanical process that estimates strength-related properties. The grade is therefore a structural classification, not a ranking of how attractive a board appears.

Appearance is secondary unless an appearance specification has been added. A board with more visible knots is not automatically unsafe, and a board that looks clean is not automatically adequate for a heavily loaded member.

Grade rules describe the maximum characteristics permitted in a grade. They do not mean that every permitted characteristic appears in every piece. The National Lumber Grades Authority (NLGA) notes that nearly all permitted characteristics are rarely present at their maximum size or number in one board. Grading is an informed classification, not a promise that every piece will look identical.
“The grading of lumber cannot be considered an exact science because it is based on a visual inspection of each piece and the judgement of the grader and/or on the results of a method of mechanically determining the strength characteristics of structural lumber.”
— National Lumber Grades Authority, Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber, 2025 edition

That limitation does not make a grade meaningless. It means the grade must be used with the correct species group, dimensions, design values and application. Structural design values and span or load requirements come from the applicable grading rules, design tables, plans and building requirements—not from the appearance of one board in a retail rack.
Why “framing lumber” is not one universal category
Different members need different combinations of width, thickness, strength and permitted characteristics. A narrow wall stud is not classified in exactly the same way as a wide joist or a beam. The grade names may also differ by regional rule set, so always read the category on the stamp and the current standard used in your jurisdiction.
Light Framing
WWPA identifies Light Framing as a category for basic framing uses such as walls, plates, sills, cripples and blocking. Its listed grades are Construction, Standard and Utility. These grades are intended for the sizes and uses allowed by the relevant grading rules; they are not a blanket authorization for every structural member.
For a typical wall-framing purchase, confirm that the plan calls for Light Framing and that the board’s size, species group and grade match. A Light Framing board should not be moved into a joist, rafter, header or beam application merely because it has the same nominal dimensions as the specified member.

Stud
Stud is an optional grade for vertical uses, including load-bearing walls. It is a category rather than a universal “better” or “worse” version of No. 2. Whether Stud is appropriate depends on the member’s vertical role, the design and the grading program recognized where the project is built.

If plans identify Stud grade, use Stud-grade material of the specified dimensions and species group. Do not assume that any board marked with a different category can be substituted because it is straighter or has fewer visible knots.
Structural Light Framing
Structural Light Framing covers smaller members where higher design values may be needed than ordinary light framing provides. NLGA’s 2025 Canadian rules list Select Structural, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 under Structural Light Framing. The exact eligible sizes and design values depend on the current rule set and species group.
A plan that calls for No. 2 Structural Light Framing is not necessarily calling for No. 2 from another category. The category, not just the number, is part of the specification.

Structural Joists & Planks is a separate category for wider lumber used in applications such as joists, rafters, headers, small beams and trusses. NLGA lists Select Structural, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 in this category as well. The same grade name can therefore appear in more than one category while referring to different eligible sizes, uses and design values.
For a joist, rafter, header or beam, use the category and grade stated by the plans. If the design does not state a grade, the member should be sized and specified by a qualified designer under the local code or engineering requirements before material is purchased.
Appearance classifications
NLGA also describes an Appearance classification. It adds restrictions on wane, skip and warp while retaining the structural performance level of the underlying National Grading Rule (NGR) grade. Appearance restrictions can make a board look more uniform, but they do not replace the underlying structural classification.
Is No. 2 lumber good for framing?
It can be, when No. 2 is the specified grade in the correct lumber category for that member. NLGA recognizes No. 2 under Structural Light Framing and Structural Joists & Planks. That does not make every No. 2 board interchangeable with every other No. 2 board.
Before buying, verify all of these details:
- The member being built: wall stud, plate, joist, rafter, header, beam, truss component or blocking.
- The category named in the plans or applicable design: Light Framing, Stud, Structural Light Framing, Structural Joists & Planks or another recognized category.
- The grade, such as No. 2, and the species or species combination.
- The nominal and actual dimensions, required length and any treatment or moisture condition stated by the specification.
- The span, spacing, loads, support conditions and local code requirements used to select the member.
If the plan calls for No. 2 in a particular category, a grade-stamped board that matches that category can be appropriate. If the plan calls for a different grade or a higher design value, do not downgrade because a No. 2 board looks sound. Conversely, do not assume a visually cleaner board satisfies a higher structural grade.

How to read a grade stamp
A stamp communicates more than a grade number. The American Wood Council says species or species-combination abbreviations are a standard component of grade stamps, with few exceptions. The stamp normally also identifies the grade or category and the inspection agency or mark associated with the grading program.
Look for the species group
Species and species-group abbreviations matter because design values are tied to the group, not simply to the board’s nominal size. Two boards marked with the same grade name but from different species groups may not have the same published structural values. Record the species-group marking when checking a material list or asking whether a substitution is acceptable.
Identify the grade and category
Find the grade wording or symbol and determine whether it identifies Light Framing, Stud, Structural Light Framing, Structural Joists & Planks or another category. A number by itself is incomplete information. “No. 2” must be interpreted within the category and rule set that produced the stamp.
Use the inspection mark when notation is unfamiliar
Stamps can contain abbreviations that are unfamiliar to a homeowner or builder working across regions. The American Wood Council advises contacting the inspection agency associated with the mark when the notation is unclear. Do not infer a grade from a partial stamp, a retailer description or a handwritten label.
Check the physical board against the stamp
Confirm that the board you select carries the required stamp and that its dimensions and length match the material list. A loose board in a bundle can be the wrong size, species group or grade even when most of the bundle is correct.
How to choose boards for a framing project
- Start with the plans. Identify each member and record the required category, grade, species group, dimensions, length, spacing and any treatment or moisture condition. If the plans do not specify these items, obtain a design decision before ordering structural material.
- Separate members by use. Make different lists for studs, plates, blocking, joists, rafters, headers, beams and truss components. Do not place all boards under one generic “framing lumber” line.
- Check the governing requirements. Confirm which grading rules, design values and building requirements apply in the project’s jurisdiction. A Canadian rule set and a western U.S. rule set may use similar grade names but are not automatically interchangeable.
- Read every stamp. Match the grade and category, species or species group, and inspection mark to the specification. Ask the inspection agency or supplier for clarification if a mark cannot be identified.
- Verify dimensions and length. Nominal and actual sizes are not the same, and a structural calculation depends on the actual member dimensions. Check the required length and reject boards that are too short, incorrectly sized or cut in a way that conflicts with the plans.
- Screen for handling damage. Look for splits, crushing, severe edge damage, excessive warp for the intended installation and damage from storage or transport. These observations help with selection and installation, but they do not replace the grade stamp or structural design.
- Confirm moisture condition when specified. If the plans or material specification call for a particular moisture condition, verify it with the supplier or grading documentation. The cited grading sources do not establish one universal moisture percentage for every framing purchase, so do not apply an unsupported threshold.
- Keep documentation. Photograph or record the stamp, retain delivery paperwork and keep the approved material list. This makes it easier to resolve a substitution or inspection question later.
- Obtain approval before substituting. A proposed change should be checked against the same category, species-group design values, dimensions, span, loads and support conditions. Get approval from the designer, engineer, building official or other responsible authority identified by the project.
How appearance differs from structural grade
Knots, wane, skip, checks, warp and other visible features are controlled by grade rules to the extent that they affect strength, utility or the specified appearance classification. Their presence alone does not tell you whether a board is suitable.
Appearance becomes a separate requirement when the project calls for a cleaner visual surface, such as exposed framing or finish work. NLGA’s Appearance classification restricts wane, skip and warp while preserving the structural level of the underlying NGR grade. A board can therefore meet a structural grade without meeting an appearance requirement, or meet a visual expectation without being the grade required for a loaded member.

Common framing-grade mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating grades as a universal ladder
Construction, Standard, Utility, Stud, Select Structural, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 belong to defined categories and rule systems. They are not one universal ascending ladder that can be swapped without checking the category. Start with the member and design requirement, then compare grades that are actually eligible for that application.
Using a stud grade for a horizontal member
Stud is intended for vertical uses. A joist, rafter, header or beam generally belongs to a structural joist, plank or other specified category. If a bundle is labeled “stud,” do not redirect it to a horizontal load path without written design approval.
Choosing by knot count or straightness alone
A straight, nearly knot-free board may still carry the wrong species-group or category stamp. A board with visible knots may meet its assigned grade. Check the complete stamp and the plans before judging suitability.

Ignoring species-group information
Grade and species group work together in design values. A number without its species-group context is not enough to verify a structural substitution.
Assuming a regional rule applies everywhere
WWPA’s category pages describe western U.S. dimension lumber. NLGA’s 2025 standard is for Canadian lumber and uses NGR grade names; its September 2025 edition supersedes previous editions, and NLGA’s publications page also lists later 2026 updates and supplements. The applicable edition, design values and code requirements depend on location and lumber program. Verify the current rule set before ordering.
Accepting an unclear or incomplete stamp
If the inspection mark, species abbreviation or grade cannot be read, set the board aside until the supplier or inspection agency confirms it. Guessing can create a material-compliance problem that is harder to correct after the wall or roof is closed.
U.S. and Canadian grading references
Grading terminology is not completely universal across North America. WWPA’s dimensional-lumber and structural-overview material addresses western U.S. dimension lumber, including Light Framing, Stud and structural categories. The American Wood Council’s lumber-grade-stamp FAQ explains the information normally carried by a stamp and identifies recognized grading-rule publishers.

For a project near a jurisdictional boundary or using imported lumber, ask which grading agency, species group, design-value table and code edition the designer is using. Similar wording on two stamps does not by itself prove equal capacity.
When the plans do not name a grade
Do not fill in the blank with a general internet recommendation. A required grade or size depends on information that is project-specific:
- Span and unsupported length.
- Dead, live, snow, wind and other applicable loads.
- Member spacing and orientation.
- Support conditions, bearing length and connections.
- Species group and published design values.
- Deflection, vibration, fire and other performance requirements.
- Local building-code provisions and inspection requirements.
The available grading references explain categories and stamp information, but they do not provide a universal grade-and-size answer or project calculations. Have the responsible designer specify the member before purchase. A supplier can identify stamped material; the supplier should not be expected to redesign the structure.
A practical purchase checklist
- Member identified: stud, plate, joist, rafter, header, beam, truss part or blocking.
- Category identified: Light Framing, Stud, Structural Light Framing, Structural Joists & Planks or the category named by the design.
- Grade matches the plans.
- Species or species-group abbreviation matches the design values.
- Nominal and actual dimensions are correct.
- Length and quantity are correct.
- Required moisture condition or treatment is documented where applicable.
- Inspection mark and stamp are legible.
- No handling damage makes the piece unsuitable for its intended installation.
- Any substitution has written approval from the responsible designer or authority.
What to do when a board fails inspection or does not match
The stamp is missing
Separate the board from the structural order and ask the supplier for traceable grading documentation or a replacement. Do not treat an unstamped board as equivalent to stamped structural lumber without an accepted verification procedure.
The grade is correct but the category is unclear
Ask the supplier or inspection agency to identify the category and rule set. If the answer cannot be documented, use material whose stamp clearly matches the plans.
The delivered species group differs
Pause installation and ask the designer to verify the substitute using the correct design values. Grade names alone do not establish equal capacity.
The board is damaged or badly warped
Photograph the condition, record the board identification and request replacement or approval. Do not rely on field trimming or extra fasteners as an automatic remedy; those changes can affect the design and must be authorized when structural performance is involved.
The plan and available stock do not agree
Do not silently downgrade, upgrade or change dimensions. Submit the available grade, species group and dimensions for review, along with the span, loads and support details that control the member.
Bottom line for selecting framing lumber
Use the grade, category, species group and dimensions specified for each member by the plans and applicable local requirements. No. 2 can be an appropriate framing grade in the right Structural Light Framing or Structural Joists & Planks application, but “No. 2” alone is not a complete specification. Read the entire stamp, treat appearance as a separate concern, and obtain design approval before making any substitution.
