It is an excellent fit for Apple Home users who value a traditional-looking door. At $349 in the U.S., however, it is difficult to recommend to buyers who need a keypad, fingerprint access, or the best value.
What is the Level Lock Pro?
The Level Lock Pro is a complete smart deadbolt replacement, not simply a motor that turns an existing lock. Its exterior still looks like a conventional keyed deadbolt, while the motor, electronics, and single CR2 battery are concealed within the lock mechanism.

It supports Bluetooth Low Energy and Matter-over-Thread, works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and SmartThings, and supports Apple Home Key. Level also says it is the company’s first lock with integrated door-status awareness. The Pro launched in fall 2025, according to Level’s product explanation.
The box includes the lock, a short strike plate, six screws, one CR2 lithium battery, two NFC key fobs, and two physical keys. The exact finish availability and current U.S. price should be checked on Level’s product page.

|---|---|---|
| Hidden design | Yes | Yes |
| Apple Home Key | Yes | Available on some models, including Lock+ |
| Matter-over-Thread | Yes | Depends on the exact model and generation |
| Integrated door-status detection | Yes | No equivalent built into earlier models |

| U.S. list price | $349 observed August 18, 2026 | Varies by model and availability |
Do not treat the Pro as the first Level lock with every modern feature. Home Key and Matter availability varies by model. Level’s comparison page is the appropriate place to check a specific older lock.
The most meaningful functional upgrade is door-status detection. The most important connectivity upgrade is Matter-over-Thread. Longer battery life and improved responsiveness are also part of the new hardware platform, but “up to one year” is a manufacturer estimate rather than a guaranteed result.

The lock is not literally invisible. You still see a traditional cylinder, keyway, interior thumb-turn, and strike plate. What disappears is the bulky smart-lock hardware: there is no large interior motor housing and no visible battery compartment on the door.
That makes a real difference in a minimalist, historic, or architecturally finished home. From both sides, the door retains the visual language of an ordinary deadbolt rather than advertising that it is connected. Independent reviews from WIRED, MacRumors, and AppleInsider identify this discreet design as the Pro’s defining strength.
The trade-off is convenience. There is no keypad included, and the battery is inside the deadbolt rather than in an easily reached interior housing. Guests, cleaners, dog walkers, and renters may need a Home Key, Level app access, key fob, physical key, or the separately sold Level Keypad.
Apple Home Key: the main reason to buy
Compatible users can unlock with an iPhone or Apple Watch by tapping the device at the lock. Other methods include the Level app, included NFC fobs, physical keys, and the optional keypad.

Level specifies an iPhone XS or later running iOS 17.1 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10.1 or later. Check the current requirements on Level’s product page before buying.
Home Key’s local tap-to-unlock experience should be distinguished from remote access. Apple Home Key does not by itself give you remote control from anywhere. Remote locking and unlocking, Home automations, and dependable off-site status access require a compatible Matter-over-Thread hub controller and suitable Thread infrastructure, as described in Level’s specifications.
Express Mode can make Home Key especially convenient because the user may not need to open an app or authenticate in the usual way. A physical key remains the simplest fallback if the phone, watch, app, network, or battery creates a problem. Published reviews and community reports include occasional complaints about Home Key responsiveness and firmware behavior, but those are individual experiences, not evidence of a representative failure rate.
Shared access also needs planning. Home users may receive digital keys, while other guests can use the Level app, fobs, physical keys, or a keypad. The Level app remains important for administration, including adding people, fobs, and Level Keypad codes.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMatter-over-Thread: broader compatibility, not identical features
Thread is the low-power mesh network; Matter is the interoperability standard that helps compatible smart-home products work across ecosystems. The Pro uses Matter over Thread rather than relying only on Bluetooth.
That makes the lock more attractive to households using Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings. It does not mean every Level feature appears identically in every platform. Basic lock controls are the clearest expectation. Door status, battery state, activity history, guest administration, keypad codes, and automations can depend on the platform, hub, controller, and current software support.
For remote Matter features, you need a compatible hub/controller with Thread border-router capability. The Level app may still be required for management tasks even when daily control is handled in another smart-home app. Buyers should choose the ecosystem first, confirm its current Matter support, and avoid assuming that a feature visible in Level’s app will automatically be exposed in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings.

- True Hands-Free Unlocking with UWB Technology: Experience a new era of smart access — UWB (Ultra-Wideband) detects your incoming presence, direction, and intent to unlock automatically as you approach. It provides a faster, more convenient, and highly secure way to enter your home without touching the lock. Perfect when your hands are full, you're wearing gloves, or arriving in the rain. (Note: UWB unlocking requires a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and is supported on Apple Watch Series 6 or later (excluding SE) running watchOS 11.5+ and iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE & iPhone 16e) running iOS 18.5+.)
- All-in-One Unlocking Options: Enjoy Apple home key tap-to-unlock (requires an Apple Thread-enabled Matter controller: HomePod 2nd Gen, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K 2021/2022), plus fingerprint, touchscreen passcode, voice assistant control, app remote access, NFC card support (card sold separately), and a physical key, giving you flexible, reliable ways to enter your home in any situation.
- Matter Over Thread for Multi-Ecosystem Compatibility: Built with Matter over Thread, the U400 can connect to multiple smart home platforms simultaneously, allowing you to enjoy the unique features of each ecosystem. Thread offers faster response, more stable connectivity, lower power consumption, and secure data transmission. Note: A Thread-enabled Matter controller from each ecosystem is required for its respective platform.
- Convenient Rechargeable Power System: Powered by a rechargeable and removable lithium battery that lasts up to 6 months per charge. Use the lock's USB-C port to recharge without taking the lock offline, or remove the battery and charge it separately. A low-battery voice alert will notify you when the battery drops below 20%, ensuring you never get caught off guard.
- Certified Security & Outdoor Durability: BHMA-certified for proven protection, mechanical strength, and long-term reliability. The IP65-rated exterior guards against dust and water for dependable outdoor performance. Plus, the rekeyable design allows you to change the physical key without replacing the entire lock cylinder.
Door-status detection is the most important upgrade
A conventional smart lock can report “locked” while the door itself is still ajar. The Pro is designed to detect whether the door is open or closed through technology integrated into the lock, without an exposed magnet or separate contact sensor.
That distinction is useful for children, pets, deliveries, and doors that do not always latch consistently. It can support alerts and automations and may remove the need to install a separate visible sensor.
It is not a security alarm and does not prove that the frame, cylinder, or door is resistant to forced entry. It reports a physical state. A bowed door, loose hinges, inconsistent seating, or a deadbolt that rubs against the strike can make any smart-lock state less reliable. The practical questions are whether the status is exposed in your chosen app, how quickly it updates, and whether the platform supports the notification or automation you want. Matter does not guarantee identical door-status support everywhere.
Installation and compatibility
Before buying, check all of the following:
- ANSI-standard 2 1/8-inch bore
- Door thickness between 1.75 and 2 inches
- Backset of 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches
- A compatible Level Pro strike plate
- A standard single deadbolt rather than a multipoint, mortise, rim, or sliding-door lock
- A compatible iOS or Android device
Nonstandard backsets, unusually narrow or thick doors, decorative hardware, historic doors, and installations where the strike plate cannot be replaced may rule out the Pro. Renters should also confirm that replacing the complete deadbolt is permitted.
Most importantly, the deadbolt should extend and retract smoothly by hand before installation. Door sag, weather stripping, a tight strike, or a misaligned frame can cause slow operation, motor strain, incomplete locking, and poor battery life. A lock that binds mechanically may appear to have an electronics or connectivity problem when the real issue is the door.

Battery life and replacement
The Pro uses one non-rechargeable CR2 lithium battery. Level claims up to one year under typical conditions and describes an approximate nine-to-12-month range depending on use. Actual life will vary with cycle count, temperature, auto-lock frequency, Thread and Bluetooth conditions, hub distance, firmware behavior, failed attempts, and mechanical resistance.
The battery sits inside the deadbolt. That is excellent for appearance but less convenient than replacing a battery in a visible interior housing. The lock is also dependent on warnings arriving in time. A PCWorld review reported battery states of “Healthy,” “Low,” and “Critically Low” in the app.

- ANYWHERE ACCESS: With built-in WiFi compatibility, you can easily and securely connect your Schlage Encode Deadbolt to your home WiFi network to control and monitor your home from anywhere with the Schlage Home app
- PEACE OF MIND: Lock and unlock from anywhere, manage up to 100 access codes for keyless entry, view lock history, receive customizable notifications and easily manage multiple locks at once - all when paired to the Schlage Home app and connected to a secure WiFi network
- VOICE CONTROL: Works with Alexa and Google Home for optional, hands-free convenience when paired with the Schlage Home app and a voice enabled device
- ADVANCED SECURITY: Secure, encrypted connection; built-in, customizable alarm for door movement and forced entry attempts; fingerprint-resistant touchscreen; certified highest residential Security, Durability and Finish rating by BHMA industry experts
- EASY INSTALL: Install in minutes with just a screwdriver, no hardwiring required; Snap ‘n Stay design helps keep the lock on the door so both hands are free; fits standard doors with 1-3/8 in to 1-3/4 in door thickness and 2-3/8 in or 2-3/4 in backset
Keep a physical key available. A dead battery should not turn the lock into a permanent lockout if the mechanical keyway remains usable, but the key is the essential fallback. Treat the one-year figure as a ceiling under stated conditions, not as a service interval you can safely ignore.
Security and durability
Level lists BHMA Certified AAA, ANSI Grade 1/A, UL 10C compliance, IPx4 water resistance, an operating range of -4°F to 140°F, and testing to 250,000 cycles—described by the company as 135 years of average use. These are manufacturer-listed certifications and test claims, not a guarantee that the lock is immune to picking, forced entry, weather, or poor installation. See the official specifications for the stated ratings.

The mechanical security of the installation still depends heavily on the door, frame, cylinder, deadbolt alignment, strike, and screws. Use the appropriate security screws and install the strike firmly into sound framing; a strong lock cannot compensate for a weak jamb. “Invisible” describes the appearance and placement of the electronics, not a universal security advantage over established deadbolt makers.
Price and total cost
Level listed the Pro at $349 in the U.S. when checked August 18, 2026. Prices, promotions, bundles, stock, and installation charges can change.
The real cost may include the Level Keypad, additional fobs, professional installation, replacement CR2 batteries, or door-hardware work. A compatible Matter hub may also be necessary if you do not already have one. This is why the Pro should be judged as a design-first premium lock, not simply compared by its base price.
Alternatives
| Lock | Best for | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus | Lower-cost Apple Home Key access | Includes DoorSense and can use an optional Wi-Fi module, but has more conventional visible hardware. Apple listed one configuration at $209.95. |
| Schlage Encode Plus | Apple Home Key plus keypad entry | Has a built-in keypad, Wi-Fi, and access codes. Schlage lists a $329 MSRP, but it is visibly more substantial. |
| Aqara U100 | Value and multiple entry methods | Adds fingerprint and keypad-style access and was listed at $189.99 by Aqara’s U.S. store when checked. |
| Level Lock | Lower-cost invisible design | Level listed it at $249, but it does not necessarily provide the Pro’s newest hardware or integrated door-status feature. |
| Level Bolt | Preserving existing exterior hardware | A retrofit-style option, not a direct replacement for the Pro’s complete deadbolt and included keys and fobs. |
Who should buy the Level Lock Pro?
- Apple design purists: You want Home Key and door-status awareness without a keypad or bulky interior hardware.
- Apple Home households: You already have suitable hub and Thread infrastructure and prefer tap-to-unlock access.
- Traditional-door owners: The appearance matters enough to justify paying more.
- Households needing physical backup: You value included keys and fobs alongside digital access.
Skip it if you need a built-in keypad, fingerprint access, inexpensive code sharing, a lock controlled entirely from one third-party app, or compatibility with a nonstandard door. It is also a poor fit if replacing the entire deadbolt is not allowed.
Final verdict
The Level Lock Pro is the most compelling version yet of Level’s invisible-lock idea. Built-in door-status detection is more than a cosmetic improvement, Matter-over-Thread broadens ecosystem support, and Apple Home Key makes everyday entry exceptionally well suited to compatible iPhone and Apple Watch owners.
But the $349 price, separate keypad, concealed battery replacement, hub requirements for remote Matter features, and uneven feature parity across smart-home platforms make it a specialist recommendation. Buy it when a clean, traditional-looking door is a priority. Choose Yale, Schlage, or Aqara when keypad access, fingerprint entry, broad guest convenience, or value matters more.
