Neither leather nor fabric is automatically the more durable or comfortable couch. “Leather” and “fabric” each describe a wide range of materials, finishes, weaves, and constructions. The better choice depends on the exact upholstery, the sofa’s frame and cushions, your household’s spills and pets, exposure to sunlight or heat, and the care instructions attached to that model.
Use this guide to compare the two materials without relying on blanket claims. It explains how each surface ages, what comfort actually depends on, how to decode fabric cleaning labels, how to care for leather safely, and what to ask before buying.

Leather vs. fabric: the practical verdict
Choose the specific sofa—not the category—that best matches your use. A well-constructed fabric sofa can outperform a poorly specified leather sofa, and a suitable leather finish can be easier to live with than a delicate fabric in one home but a poor fit in another. No independent, comparable study establishes that leather couches universally last longer than fabric couches, and no upholstery label predicts whether a seat will feel supportive or sinkable.

Retailer comparisons, including Article’s discussion of comfort, treat the feel of a sofa as subjective. That is the useful conclusion: upholstery type alone does not tell you how your body will feel on a particular couch.

Why “leather” and “fabric” are too broad for a buying decision
Leather includes different hides and finishes
Leather’s behavior depends on its type and finish. A natural surface can develop character as it is used, including wrinkles, folds, stretching, polished areas, and abrasion where people sit most. Those changes are material characteristics, not proof that every leather sofa has failed or that every leather sofa will age in the same way.
Finish also affects what you see and how you clean it. La-Z-Boy states that each leather type has its own care and cleaning specifications, with some general guidance applying across types. Do not assume that a conditioner, wipe, or solvent suitable for one finish is safe for another. The sofa’s care sheet should identify the approved approach.
Fabric varies by fiber, weave, and treatment
“Fabric” may refer to upholstery made with different fibers, blends, weaves, and protective treatments. These differences influence the hand feel, how the surface responds to friction, and whether a mark can be treated with water, solvent, or neither. Gala Collezione’s care guidance describes fabric as subject to wrinkling, stretching, pilling, and fading; the likelihood and visibility of those changes depend on the specific upholstery.
A retailer’s broad label cannot replace the composition and cleaning information for the sofa you are considering. Request the upholstery details, then locate the furniture tag or care document that explains permitted cleaning methods.
Construction can matter as much as the cover
Seat depth, firmness, cushion construction, suspension, and overall support change how a couch feels and how it handles daily use. Two sofas covered in the same leather can feel entirely different, just as two sofas in the same fabric can have different support and wear patterns. Compare the complete model, including its cushions and frame, instead of treating the cover as the whole product.
Durability: compare wear patterns, not promises of years
Durability has at least two meanings: whether the upholstery resists damage and whether the visible aging remains acceptable to you. The available manufacturer guidance describes ways both materials can change with use, but it does not provide a neutral, like-for-like lifespan number.
| Material | Documented aging or damage pattern | Factors that can accelerate visible change |
|---|---|---|
| Leather | Wrinkles, folds, stretching, polishing, and abrasion in heavily used areas. | Pet scratches, concentrated use, prolonged direct sunlight, and intense heat. |
| Fabric | Wrinkles, stretching, pilling, and fading. | Friction, spills treated with unsuitable products, sunlight, and the characteristics of the particular weave or treatment. |
A rub count or retailer abrasion threshold should not be presented as a guarantee of a certain number of years. The evidence available here does not establish an independent abrasion score that predicts service life, nor does it establish a universal threshold that every household should require. Use any performance figure supplied for a specific fabric as one piece of information, and ask what test, edition, and conditions it represents.

How leather tends to look as it ages
Natural leather can acquire folds and polished areas where bodies repeatedly contact it. In a heavily used seat, stretching or abrasion may become more apparent. Some buyers value this developing character; others want a more uniform appearance and may find the changes distracting. Ask the seller how the particular finish is expected to change and whether the care guide permits any conditioning product.
How fabric tends to look as it ages
Fabric may wrinkle or stretch around cushions, develop pills from repeated friction, or fade when exposed to light. A fabric that hides small marks in a busy pattern may not hide flattening or pilling, while a smooth, pale fabric can make marks and fading more visible. These are observations to discuss with the seller for the exact upholstery, not a basis for declaring all fabric fragile.
Household use changes the comparison
List the conditions your sofa will face before selecting a material:
- Frequent food or drink near the seating area.
- Children or guests likely to create sudden spills.
- Pets that may scratch, shed, or climb onto the cushions.
- A position near a sunny window or a heater.
- One seat used far more heavily than the others.
Gala Collezione cautions that upholstery materials differ in resistance to abrasion and scratches and are not guaranteed against pet damage. Treat that as a reason to verify the exact specification, not as a claim that one category is pet-proof.
Comfort: why you must test the exact sofa
Comfort cannot be settled by choosing a material name. The surface feel matters, but so do seat depth, firmness, cushion filling and construction, back support, and the way the sofa fits your posture. Article’s comparison explicitly treats “which one feels better on your body?” as a subjective question rather than a leather-versus-fabric rule.
A useful in-store test
- Sit in your normal position for several minutes rather than perching on the edge.
- Check whether your feet rest comfortably and whether the seat supports your lower back.
- Try the same posture on every seat you expect to use; corner and center cushions may feel different.
- Lean back, change position, and assess whether the cushion recovers or leaves you unsupported.
- Touch the upholstery with bare skin and ordinary clothing. Note whether the texture and firmness suit you.
- Ask whether the floor model has the same cushion construction and upholstery specification as the delivered sofa.
If buying remotely, request the seat depth, cushion construction, firmness description, upholstery specification, and complete care sheet. A small material swatch can help you judge texture and color, but it cannot reproduce the support of the finished sofa.
Fabric care starts with the cleaning code
La-Z-Boy’s manufacturer guidance states: “To successfully clean fabric, it is important to determine the type of fabric and the recommended cleaning code.” Find the code on the furniture tag before applying water, solvent, foam, or any other treatment. The following descriptions reflect that guidance; your own sofa’s label takes priority if it differs.

Code W: water-based method
For W fabrics, La-Z-Boy describes using a water-based shampoo or foam cleaner. Pretest the product in an inconspicuous area, avoid saturating the upholstery, and blot spills immediately. Saturation can drive moisture into cushions and leave marks or other damage, so use the smallest amount permitted by the instructions.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Code S: water-free solvent only
For S fabrics, the guidance specifies a water-free dry-cleaning solvent and says not to use water. A water-based spray that works on a W fabric can be the wrong treatment for an S fabric. Check the product label and the sofa’s instructions before proceeding.
Code W-S: method depends on the stain
W-S instructions distinguish water-based and oil-based stains. Follow the designated method for the type of mark rather than assuming that every spill should receive the same treatment. If you cannot identify the stain or the label’s directions are unclear, stop and contact the manufacturer or a professional upholstery cleaner.
Code X: vacuum or light brushing only
For X fabrics, La-Z-Boy says not to use foam or liquid cleaner. Limit care to vacuuming or light brushing. Do not convert an X code into a stain-treatment experiment; a liquid cleaner can permanently damage upholstery that is not approved for it.
Safe handling for any fabric code
Gala Collezione’s 2026 care guide advises testing products in an inconspicuous area, avoiding strong rubbing, removing dry dirt promptly with a vacuum and soft brush, and blotting liquid from the outside toward the center. It warns that unsuitable products may irreversibly damage upholstery.
- Read the tag and identify the code.
- Remove loose dry dirt with a soft brush or suitable upholstery attachment.
- Blot a fresh liquid spill; do not scrub it outward.
- Use only the product and method allowed for that code.
- Pretest in a hidden area and stop if color, texture, or finish changes.
- Allow the area to dry as directed; do not saturate cushions.
Leather care is specific, not maintenance-free
Leather needs routine attention and finish-specific treatment. La-Z-Boy recommends regular dusting and vacuuming, using a clean, soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water for weekly dusting, keeping leather away from prolonged direct sunlight and intense heat, and blotting spills quickly rather than rubbing. It also emphasizes that each leather type has its own care and cleaning specifications.
Routine dust removal
Dust the surface and vacuum crevices regularly. For the weekly wipe described by La-Z-Boy, use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. Avoid turning a light dusting into a wet cleaning session; excessive moisture is not a substitute for the approved care method.

Spills and stains
Blot a spill promptly with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not rub, because rubbing can spread the liquid and alter the surface. Gala Collezione likewise recommends immediate blotting with an absorbent dry cotton cloth and says the appropriate product should be selected according to the type of leather on the furniture.
Sun and heat placement
Keep leather out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from intense heat sources. Before delivery, check whether the planned position is beside a radiator, heater, fireplace, or bright window. Moving the sofa later may be harder than choosing a safer location first.

You expect frequent spills
Prioritize a clear cleaning code, accessible care instructions, and a surface whose appearance you can live with after prompt blotting. Do not choose solely on the assumption that leather makes every spill harmless or that every fabric can be shampooed.
You have pets
Ask how the exact upholstery responds to scratching and abrasion, and accept that neither category is guaranteed against pet damage. Plan routine vacuuming and decide whether visible marks, pilling, or polished areas would bother you.
The sofa sits in strong light or near heat
Reconsider the location before choosing upholstery. La-Z-Boy specifically advises keeping leather away from prolonged direct sun and intense heat; fabric can also fade, so ask the seller about the exact material’s light exposure guidance.

Purchase checklist: questions to answer before ordering
- What exactly is the upholstery? Ask for the leather type and finish, or the fabric’s composition, weave, and treatment.
- Where is the cleaning code? Locate the furniture tag and obtain the full model-specific care document.
- What construction supports the seat? Confirm seat depth, firmness, cushion construction, and any differences between the showroom sample and the delivered model.
- How should this material age? Ask about expected wrinkles, stretching, pilling, fading, polishing, or abrasion for the exact upholstery.
- What household conditions apply? Discuss pets, likely spills, sunlight, heat, and which seats will receive the most use.
- What must never be used? Record prohibited water, solvent, foam, rubbing, or conditioning products.
- What happens if a stain is not covered by the instructions? Get the manufacturer’s contact route or a recommendation for a qualified upholstery professional.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming leather always lasts longer
There is no independent comparable lifespan statistic supporting that universal claim. Compare the exact leather finish, construction, use conditions, and care requirements instead.
Using the same cleaner on every fabric
W, S, W-S, and X codes permit different methods. Water on an S fabric or liquid cleaner on an X fabric can create damage. Read the tag first.
Rubbing a fresh spill
Both the leather and fabric guidance emphasizes blotting. Rubbing can spread a spill, roughen a surface, or drive liquid deeper.
Skipping a hidden-area test
Even a product marketed for upholstery may be unsuitable for a particular finish. Pretest as the manufacturer directs and stop if the color or texture changes.
Buying from a swatch alone
A swatch cannot tell you whether the seat depth, cushion construction, firmness, or support will suit your body. Sit on the exact model whenever possible.
Treating an abrasion number as a service-life guarantee
Retailer thresholds and rub counts are not, by themselves, a promise of years of use. Ask how the figure was measured and apply it only to the specified material and test conditions.

Useful maintenance tools
A soft upholstery brush or a vacuum upholstery attachment is a sensible routine-care tool for removing dry dust and loose debris. Use it only within the sofa maker’s instructions: it is not a substitute for the fabric cleaning code, a leather-specific product, or professional stain treatment. Keep a clean, absorbent cloth available for prompt blotting, and store the care sheet where everyone in the household can find it.
Bottom line
The right couch is the one whose exact upholstery, construction, comfort, and care requirements fit your home. Leather is not automatically longer-lived or maintenance-free, and fabric is not automatically less comfortable or less durable. Identify the material and finish, read the cleaning code, test the actual seat, plan for your household’s sunlight, heat, pets, and spills, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than a universal rule.
