Yes, Kohler launched a product called Dekoda. But “a camera for your toilet” is shorthand that leaves out the important distinction: Dekoda is a rim-mounted bathroom health tracker that uses optical sensing and spectroscopy to analyze toilet-bowl contents. Kohler says it can provide trends related to gut health and hydration and alert users to possible blood in the bowl. It is not a replacement toilet, and it is not marketed as a device that films people using the bathroom.
What is Kohler Dekoda?
Dekoda is a compact device from Kohler Health that attaches to the rim of an existing toilet. Kohler describes an adjustable, tool-free clamp designed to fit most toilet bowls, so installing it does not require replacing the toilet or carrying out a bathroom remodel.

What does Dekoda measure?
Kohler markets Dekoda around three types of information:
- Gut-health trends: The system is intended to identify patterns associated with bowel activity over time.
- Hydration trends: It provides information Kohler says can help users monitor hydration-related patterns.
- Possible blood presence: Kohler says the device can alert users when it detects blood in the toilet bowl.
These are company-described insights and alerts, not diagnoses. Dekoda cannot, on the evidence currently available, identify the cause of blood, diagnose gastrointestinal disease, or replace a clinician’s assessment. A reader should not treat a reassuring app result as proof that nothing is wrong, or treat an alert as proof of a particular illness.
Is it really a camera?
News coverage has commonly called Dekoda a “toilet camera,” including TechCrunch’s October 2025 launch report. The description is understandable because the device uses optical analysis of the bowl. However, Kohler’s own current product language emphasizes patented spectroscopy and advanced sensors rather than presenting Dekoda as a conventional security camera.
The practical distinction matters. The device is aimed down into the toilet bowl, not outward at the person or the surrounding bathroom. Kohler describes a process in which analysis occurs during an authenticated bathroom session. That supports a narrower description—optical or image-based analysis of waste—rather than the sensational suggestion that Kohler is recording someone in the bathroom.
It would nevertheless be too strong to claim that no images or scans are ever stored without reviewing Kohler’s current privacy documentation. Buyers should check exactly what information is collected, where processing occurs, how long records are retained, and whether users can delete or export them.

How a bathroom session is supposed to work
According to Kohler’s stated workflow:
- Attach Dekoda to the toilet rim using its adjustable clamp.
- Begin a private session by scanning a fingerprint or signing in through the Kohler Health app.
- Use the bathroom normally.
- Let Dekoda analyze the bowl in the background.
- Review trends and insights in the app.
- Optionally add context, such as food, medications, exercise, or travel.
This is the manufacturer’s described process, not an independently verified hands-on test. The authentication step is intended to associate a bathroom session with the correct household member, but buyers should not assume perfect identification in every situation.
How much does it cost?
Launch-period reports in October 2025 put the Dekoda hardware at $599. Reports also described membership pricing ranging from approximately $70 to $156 per year. Tom’s Guide reported plans of $6.99 per month for one person and $12.99 per month—or $130 per year—for a family plan covering up to five people.

Those figures should not automatically be treated as the current price on September 4, 2026. The official product information confirms that membership is required but does not provide a complete current price table in the supplied material. Check the live Kohler product or membership checkout before buying.
The ownership calculation is therefore straightforward in principle but depends on the current plan: hardware price plus the first year of membership, followed by a recurring subscription. That makes Dekoda substantially different from a one-time manual tracking method or a conventional bathroom accessory.
Does it replace the toilet?
No. Dekoda is an add-on that mounts to the rim of an existing toilet. It is separate from Kohler’s complete smart-toilet products, including the Leap, Claude, Veil, and Numi lines.
Rank #3
- Smart bidet toilet with compact streamlined one-piece design and integrated personal cleansing
- Compact elongated toilet bowl offers added comfort while requiring less space and pairs
- This toilet comes with the Comfort Height feature that offers chair-height seating that makes sitting down and standing up easier for most adults
- These KOHLER toilets and bidets offer dual-flush choice of 1.0 or 1.28 gpf (3.4 or 4.8 lpf)
- This fully skirted toilet trapway simplifies cleaning
That distinction is useful for construction and remodeling decisions. A homeowner considering Dekoda does not need to specify a new toilet installation solely to use the tracker. Compatibility will still depend on the bowl’s shape and rim geometry, so “fits most toilets” should not be read as a guarantee for every model or installation.

A device installed in one of the most intimate spaces in a home deserves more scrutiny than an ordinary smart-home sensor.
Kohler describes private, authenticated sessions, and the authentication system is intended to prevent one household member’s bathroom data from being assigned to another. Contemporary reporting also said Kohler described the data as end-to-end encrypted and the sensors as looking down into the bowl rather than elsewhere in the room.
Those are Kohler’s claims. They are not the same as an independent security audit or clinical evaluation. Before purchasing, review the current Kohler privacy policy and membership terms for answers to these questions:
- Is fingerprint information stored on the device, in the app, or on remote servers?
- Can the product be used without enrolling a fingerprint?
- Are raw images, scans, or only derived measurements retained?
- How long are health-related records kept?
- Can users export or permanently delete their history?
- What happens to stored information after membership cancellation?
- Are data used for product development, analytics, advertising, or shared with third parties?
Shared bathrooms add further complications. Guests, children, unregistered users, forgotten authentication, and two people using the bathroom during one session could all create attribution questions. Every person who may be monitored should understand and consent to the arrangement.

Can its blood detection be trusted medically?
Not as a standalone medical conclusion. The available material does not establish Dekoda’s sensitivity, specificity, false-positive rate, false-negative rate, independent clinical validation, or regulatory-clearance status.
Blood in a toilet bowl can have many possible explanations, and its significance depends on the person’s symptoms and medical history. If blood is persistent, unexplained, heavy, or accompanied by pain, dizziness, weakness, fever, or other concerning symptoms, contact a healthcare professional promptly. Do not wait for Dekoda to issue an alert, and do not dismiss symptoms because it does not.
The most responsible way to view the feature is as a possible prompt for follow-up—not as a diagnosis or substitute for medical testing.
Practical limitations to consider
Kohler’s marketing explains the intended workflow, but prospective buyers should think through ordinary household conditions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Toilet compatibility: Bowl shape and rim geometry may affect whether the clamp can be installed securely.
- Maintenance: The device requires periodic charging, and its battery is removable and magnetic.
- Connectivity: Use depends on a smartphone, app access, authentication, and an active membership.
- Shared use: Guests, children, pets, or unregistered users may complicate personal attribution.
- Optical conditions: Cleaners, colored water, residue, splash, unusual lighting, or contamination are reasonable questions for Kohler, although the supplied sources do not establish how each condition affects readings.
- Alert anxiety: Frequent health notifications can create worry when independent error-rate data are unavailable.
- Subscription dependence: Buyers should confirm which features remain available if membership is canceled and what happens to historical data.
Who might want Dekoda?
Dekoda may appeal to early adopters who want longitudinal bathroom-related trend data and are comfortable with connected health technology. It makes more sense for someone willing to authenticate sessions, charge the unit, maintain the app, pay the membership, and interpret alerts cautiously.
Best Value
- Compact, streamlined one-piece smart bidet toilet with integrated personal cleansing. Elongated bowl offers added room and comfort
- Comfort Height feature with chair-height seating that makes sitting down and standing up easier for most adults. The electric toilet has dual flush offers a choice of 0.8 or 1.0 gpf (3.0 or 3.8 lpf)
- Stainless steel wand offers adjustable spray shape, position, water pressure, temperature, pulsate, and oscillate functions. Front and rear wash modes provide warm water for cleansing
- Self-cleaning function uses UV light and electrolyzed water systems to automatically clean the wand surfaces. Motion-activated, hands-free opening/closing of seat and cover
- Quiet-Close lid and seat prevents slamming. Bowl is automatically misted prior to use for more effective rinsing while flushing
It is a poor fit for someone who wants a one-time purchase, considers bathroom data too sensitive for cloud-connected technology, needs clinically validated diagnostic information, or shares a bathroom with people who cannot or do not want to enroll in the system.
What are the alternatives?
The alternatives address different needs and are not direct equivalents:
- Manual symptom tracking: Inexpensive and private, but dependent on consistent user input.
- Wearables: Useful for activity, sleep, heart rate, and related signals, but generally do not inspect toilet-bowl contents.
- At-home stool or gastrointestinal tests: More targeted for particular medical questions, but usually episodic rather than continuous.
- Other toilet-health products: TechCrunch identified startup Throne as another company working on toilet-based waste analysis. Its current availability, price, and specifications should be checked independently.
Kohler’s smart toilets and PureWash bidet seats also solve different problems. Smart toilets provide integrated bathroom automation, while PureWash products focus on washing and comfort. Neither category should be treated as a substitute for Dekoda’s proposed health-tracking function—or for medical care.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe construction and remodeling perspective
For a remodel, Dekoda is best understood as a removable technology accessory rather than a plumbing fixture. It does not require a new rough-in or a new toilet installation, but the selected toilet still needs a compatible rim and enough surrounding clearance for the device.
Homeowners should also plan for charging access, a reliable phone/app setup, and a household policy for consent and account ownership. If the goal is comfort, hygiene, or accessibility, a bidet seat may provide clearer value. If the goal is health trend monitoring, Dekoda’s subscription, privacy terms, and evidence base should be evaluated before it is included in a project specification.
Bottom line for buyers
Dekoda is a real Kohler product: a rim-mounted toilet health tracker that uses optical sensing and spectroscopy to analyze bowl contents. Calling it a “camera for your toilet” captures the novelty but exaggerates the surveillance angle and understates the product’s subscription, authentication, and health-data model.
Its most important limitations are equally clear. Kohler’s claims about gut-health trends, hydration, and blood presence are not the same as independent clinical proof. Launch pricing was reported at $599 plus a recurring membership, but current pricing must be confirmed directly. Privacy terms, data retention, deletion controls, and household consent should be treated as purchase requirements, not afterthoughts.
