Kobalt vs. CRAFTSMAN Cordless Tools: 24V Max and V20 Batteries, Kits, and Warranties Compared

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Kobalt 24V Max and CRAFTSMAN V20 are separate cordless platforms. Their batteries and chargers should not be treated as interchangeable unless the exact tool and battery documentation says so. For most buyers, the best choice is the platform that matches the batteries and chargers they already own, then the specific tool, kit contents, capacity, and warranty for the job.

This comparison uses U.S. product and warranty documents available October 13, 2026. It covers the cited Kobalt 24V Max and CRAFTSMAN V20 products—not every tool, voltage generation, or product category sold under either brand.

The practical verdict

Neither brand is a universal winner based on the documentation available. Kobalt’s cited 24V drill manual offers a longer tool-warranty term than the cited CRAFTSMAN V20 warranty guidance, while the example batteries from both platforms carry three-year limited warranties. That difference matters only if the exact model qualifies and you can meet the warranty conditions.

Decision factor Kobalt 24V Max CRAFTSMAN V20
Platform relationship Separate 24V Max cordless platform Separate V20 cordless platform

Example battery compatibility Lowe’s lists KB 424-03 for Kobalt 24V Max cordless tools CRAFTSMAN lists CMCB204 for its V20 cordless power-tool and outdoor-tool lineup
Example battery warranty Three-year limited warranty on the cited Lowe’s listing Three-year limited warranty on the cited product page
Cited tool warranty Five years for the tool in a Kobalt 24V drill manual, for the original purchaser Three years for qualifying V20 handheld cordless tools sold after September 2018 with model numbers beginning CMC
Cross-brand battery fit Not established. Do not assume compatibility between Kobalt and CRAFTSMAN.

If you already own several batteries, chargers, and bare tools from one platform, staying within that platform usually avoids paying twice for chargers and batteries. If you are starting from zero, compare the exact tool and kit you need rather than choosing from the voltage label alone.

How the two battery platforms differ

Kobalt 24V Max

Lowe’s identifies the Kobalt KB 424-03 as a 24V, 4Ah lithium-ion battery for Kobalt 24V Max cordless tools. The listing specifies a three-year limited warranty. Verify the model number printed on your tool and battery before buying a replacement or spare, because Kobalt has sold other voltage generations and older products carry different documents.

CRAFTSMAN V20

CRAFTSMAN’s CMCB204 is a V20 4.0Ah lithium-ion battery. The product information says it fits the CRAFTSMAN V20 cordless power-tool and outdoor-tool lineup and carries a three-year limited warranty. The “20V MAX” wording describes maximum initial voltage measured without a workload; the stated nominal voltage is 18V. That labeling convention is not a direct performance ranking against Kobalt’s 24V label.

Why amp-hours do not settle the comparison

Amp-hours indicate stored electrical capacity and are useful when estimating how long a battery may run a given tool. They do not, by themselves, establish equal runtime, power delivery, charging time, or weight. The cited documents do not provide a controlled runtime test comparing KB 424-03 with CMCB204. Treat 4Ah and 4.0Ah as capacity specifications for the individual batteries, not as proof that the tools will run for the same time.

Compatibility: answer “Will my old batteries work?” carefully

Compatibility is determined by the platform, mechanical interface, electronics, and the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation. A Kobalt 24V Max battery is documented for Kobalt 24V Max tools; a CRAFTSMAN V20 battery is documented for CRAFTSMAN V20 tools. Those statements do not establish that either battery can be used on the other brand’s tools.

A Lowe’s question literally asking “Will the old batteries work” received a 2020 answer referring to older Kobalt 24V batteries and the then-discussed XTR line. That is dated, platform-specific guidance. It should not be expanded into a rule for every Kobalt generation, every XTR product, or CRAFTSMAN V20.

  • Read the tool’s label and manual, not just the battery’s voltage marking.
  • Match the complete platform name, such as Kobalt 24V Max or CRAFTSMAN V20.
  • Check whether the battery generation is specifically listed for that tool.
  • Do not force a battery into a connector or use an adapter unless the tool manufacturer expressly documents that setup.
  • If the compatibility statement is absent, ask the manufacturer or retailer for confirmation using both exact model numbers.

Compare the tool you will actually use

Platform size is less important than whether the system contains the tool type, configuration, and accessories your work requires. A bare drill, a drill kit with two batteries, and a high-capacity battery pack are different purchases even when they use the same platform.

Start with your existing inventory

  1. Write down the model numbers of your current batteries and chargers.
  2. Identify which tools you use most often and whether they are bare tools or kits.
  3. Check the new tool’s compatibility list for the exact battery platform.
  4. Price the complete setup, including a charger and at least one suitable battery if your current equipment cannot support it.

Buying a bare tool is economical when you already have compatible batteries and a charger. A kit can be better for a new user or when existing batteries are too small for the intended workload. Compare the kit’s battery count, amp-hour rating, charger, case, and accessories instead of comparing package prices alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match capacity to the task

  • Short, intermittent work: A smaller, lighter pack may reduce wrist and arm fatigue.
  • Continuous drilling, sawing, or outdoor work: A higher-capacity pack can reduce battery changes, but it may add weight.
  • Overhead or ladder work: Balance and total tool weight may matter more than maximum capacity.
  • Multiple tools on a jobsite: Standardizing on one platform can simplify charging, spares, and battery rotation.

Do not infer performance from voltage names

The Kobalt and CRAFTSMAN labels use different voltage conventions. CRAFTSMAN explains that its 20V MAX figure is the maximum initial voltage without workload and that nominal voltage is 18V. A higher printed number is therefore not enough evidence that one drill, saw, or blower will outperform another. Compare the exact tool’s specifications, controls, ergonomics, included accessories, and independent testing when such evidence is available.

What is established about each system’s lineup

CRAFTSMAN V20 product breadth

CRAFTSMAN’s official V20 system page describes a lineup of more than 100 products, a vendor-reported count accessed in 2026. Counts can change as products are added or discontinued, and lineup size does not measure power, durability, or value. Confirm that the specific tool category you need is currently offered and that its battery requirements match your existing equipment.

Kobalt 24V Max product selection

The cited sources establish the Kobalt 24V Max battery and drill documentation but do not provide a comparable, independently verified lineup count. Check the current Kobalt catalog for the tool type, model generation, and kit configuration you need rather than assuming that every Kobalt product uses 24V Max batteries.

Warranty comparison: duration, eligibility, and exclusions

A warranty period is only one part of the protection. The exact model, purchase date, seller, purchaser status, proof of purchase, and excluded forms of damage can determine whether a claim is accepted.

Warranty item Kobalt documentation CRAFTSMAN documentation
Tool example A Kobalt 24V drill manual states five years for the tool for the original purchaser, subject to its exclusions and conditions. CRAFTSMAN warranty guidance states three years for qualifying V20 handheld cordless tools sold after September 2018 with model numbers beginning CMC. Verify the exact model.
Battery example The cited Kobalt 24V battery listing specifies a three-year limited warranty. The cited drill manual separately states three years for the battery and charger. The CMCB204 V20 product page specifies a three-year limited warranty.
Proof and seller conditions The drill manual requires proof of purchase and directs the purchaser to return the product to the place of purchase; exclusions apply. Coverage depends on the model and category. CRAFTSMAN directs owners to its warranty lookup and, where applicable, the original place of purchase.

Kobalt’s cited five-year tool term

The five-year term comes from a specific Kobalt 24V drill manual. It applies to the tool for the original purchaser, while the same manual states three years for the battery and charger. The manual also lists exclusions and requires proof of purchase. Do not apply the five-year term automatically to every Kobalt tool, battery, charger, older generation, or product category.

CRAFTSMAN’s cited three-year V20 term

The three-year statement is limited to qualifying V20 handheld cordless tools sold after September 2018 whose model numbers begin with CMC. It is not a blanket warranty for every CRAFTSMAN product. Outdoor equipment, accessories, batteries, chargers, and products from other periods or categories may have different terms, so use the exact model in the official warranty information.

Older documents show why model checking matters

A separate Kobalt 12V kit document also specifies five years for its tool and three years for its battery, but that document applies to that 12V kit. A 2011 announcement discusses an earlier 18V line. These older references demonstrate that voltage generation and document date matter; they are not current terms for all Kobalt products.

How to make a warranty claim

Kobalt claim steps

  1. Locate the tool, battery, or charger model number and the manual that came with it.
  2. Confirm that the product is within the term stated for that exact category.
  3. Gather the dated proof of purchase and document the seller, purchase date, and symptoms.
  4. Review the manual’s exclusions. Wear, misuse, unauthorized modification, and other excluded conditions can affect coverage.
  5. Follow the manual’s instruction to return the product with proof of purchase to the place of purchase, unless current Kobalt support gives a different authorized route.
  6. Keep copies of the receipt, model number, and any claim correspondence until the matter is resolved.

CRAFTSMAN claim steps

  1. Record the complete CMC model number, serial information if present, and the purchase date.
  2. Use CRAFTSMAN’s official warranty lookup to identify the term for that exact model and category.
  3. Confirm that a V20 handheld tool qualifies under the three-year provision, including the after-September-2018 and CMC-model conditions.
  4. Prepare proof of purchase and verify whether the product must be returned to the original place of purchase.
  5. Follow the coverage-specific instructions. CRAFTSMAN states: “If you have a CRAFTSMAN® product that requires replacement under warranty, simply return the product to the original place of purchase for replacement, depending on the warranty coverage outlined below.”
  6. Do not discard the battery, charger, or receipt until the claim route and remedy are confirmed.

Battery and charger practices that prevent avoidable problems

  • Use only the charger specified for the battery platform and model family.
  • Inspect contacts for dirt, moisture, bent terminals, or visible damage before inserting a pack.
  • Allow a hot battery to cool before charging and follow the manual’s storage instructions.
  • Remove a battery from the tool during transport or long-term storage when the manual calls for it.
  • Do not open, modify, puncture, crush, or expose lithium-ion packs to water or excessive heat.
  • Label spare batteries by platform so a Kobalt 24V Max pack is not confused with a CRAFTSMAN V20 pack on a busy jobsite.

If a pack will not charge, first check the charger indicator, contacts, temperature, and manual troubleshooting steps. Stop using a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, or physically damaged, and follow the manufacturer’s disposal or service guidance.

Buying checklist for a construction crew or homeowner

  1. Choose the platform: Kobalt 24V Max or CRAFTSMAN V20, based first on batteries and chargers already owned.
  2. Verify the exact model: Confirm the tool, battery, charger, and generation numbers in the manufacturer’s documentation.
  3. Choose bare tool or kit: List every included battery, charger, case, blade, bit, and accessory.
  4. Select capacity: Balance runtime needs against weight and handling, rather than treating amp-hours as a performance score.
  5. Check warranty eligibility: Record the term, purchaser requirement, seller requirement, proof-of-purchase rule, and exclusions.
  6. Check current price and stock: Prices and inventory change by retailer and date; verify them immediately before ordering.
  7. Plan spares: For continuous work, calculate how many charged packs you need to rotate without stopping.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming 20V and 24V can be compared directly

Voltage labels are presented under different conventions. CRAFTSMAN’s own explanation distinguishes maximum initial voltage from nominal voltage. Use the exact tool’s specifications and task suitability, not the larger printed number.

Assuming all batteries within a brand are interchangeable

Kobalt’s older 12V and 18V references show that a brand name does not identify one universal battery interface. CRAFTSMAN’s V20 documentation likewise applies to a defined platform. Match the platform and model generation.

Using the longest warranty as the only buying criterion

The cited Kobalt drill term is five years for the tool, but the battery and charger are covered for three years and the manual imposes conditions. CRAFTSMAN’s three-year V20 term is limited by model, sale date, and category. Coverage that does not apply to your exact product has no practical value.

Comparing a bare tool with a complete kit

A lower advertised price may omit batteries and a charger. Write down the complete contents and calculate the cost of a usable setup before comparing offers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a brand-wide performance winner

The cited material contains no controlled independent test comparing equivalent Kobalt and CRAFTSMAN tools. A defensible choice requires model-specific specifications, ergonomics, accessories, local service, and the work you actually perform.

Which platform fits common scenarios?

You already own Kobalt 24V Max batteries

Start by checking whether the desired Kobalt bare tool is listed for your battery generation. This route can avoid purchasing another charger and lets you rotate existing packs, provided their capacity and condition suit the workload.

You already own CRAFTSMAN V20 batteries

Check the exact CMC model and V20 compatibility statement before buying a bare tool. The CRAFTSMAN system’s stated breadth may make it convenient when several needed categories are already available in V20, but confirm current availability for each tool.

You are starting a new tool collection

Compare one complete kit from each platform with the same tool class, battery capacity, charger arrangement, and accessories. Then inspect the exact warranty terms and expected replacement-battery cost. Do not choose solely from the nominal voltage or a vendor’s lineup count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You work on jobsites every day

Prioritize battery rotation, charger availability, pack weight, service access, and the tools required for your typical tasks. A platform that supports your daily tool list with fewer adapters, duplicate chargers, or incompatible spares can reduce downtime.

What this comparison can and cannot tell you

The documents establish platform-specific compatibility, example battery capacities, and cited warranty terms. They do not establish equal runtime, torque, cutting speed, durability, repair rates, or a universal brand winner. They also do not establish current prices, live inventory, or Amazon availability. Those details must be checked for the exact model and location when you are ready to buy.

For a reliable decision, identify the platform first, compare equivalent tool-and-kit configurations second, and verify the model-specific warranty before paying. That process prevents the most expensive errors: buying incompatible batteries, underestimating kit contents, and relying on a warranty term that does not cover the product in your hands.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
