Lovage (Levisticum officinale) is not considered safe for pets. The ASPCA lists it as toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Its volatile oils, particularly phthalide lactones, are associated with a diuretic effect and increased urination. If a pet may have eaten any part of the plant, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control as soon as possible rather than waiting for symptoms or estimating a safe amount from its use as a culinary herb.
For people growing it, lovage does best in rich, consistently moist but well-drained soil in light shade or full sun. It becomes a large perennial, can spread by rhizomes and seed, and needs a location where pets cannot chew it and where its eventual size will not crowd neighboring plants.

Why lovage is a pet-safety concern
The ASPCA identifies lovage as toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Its listing names volatile oils, especially phthalide lactones, as the toxic principles and gives diuretic effects or increased urination as clinical signs. The official wording is: "Toxicity: Toxic to Dogs, Toxic to Cats, Toxic to Horses." The same listing records "Clinical Signs: Diuretic, increased urination."
That classification applies even though lovage is used as a food seasoning by people. Human culinary use does not establish a safe dose for an animal, and the ASPCA listing does not provide a harmless amount, a dose-response chart or a prognosis for an individual pet. Do not let a pet nibble the leaves, stems, flowers, roots or seeds.

If your pet may have eaten lovage
- Remove access. Move the animal away from the plant and retain a sample or photograph so the species can be identified accurately.
- Call promptly. Contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control as soon as possible. ASPCA’s pet-gardening guidance advises immediate professional advice when a pet may have contacted a toxic plant.
- Do not improvise treatment. Do not induce vomiting, give a home remedy or wait for increased urination or other signs before calling. A professional can decide whether observation, examination or treatment is appropriate.
- Provide useful details. Tell the clinician the pet’s species, approximate size, when exposure occurred, which part of lovage was eaten and how much may be missing. Also mention any other plants, fertilizers or garden products that could have been accessible.
The ASPCA’s plant lists are screening resources, not substitutes for veterinary diagnosis. They are also not all-inclusive; a plant absent from a list should not automatically be treated as harmless. Any plant material can cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs and cats, so a lack of immediate signs is not a reason to assume the exposure is safe.
Where lovage grows best
Light: full sun or light shade
Lovage tolerates full sun and light shade. A lightly shaded position can be useful in warm areas or where afternoon heat dries the soil quickly, while a sunny bed can support strong growth if moisture is maintained. Choose the place that gives the plant enough room and makes pet exclusion practical; light alone does not make lovage safer to animals.
Soil: rich, moist and well drained
Prepare soil that is fertile and holds moisture without staying saturated. Lovage should not be left to dry out for long periods, particularly while establishing or when grown in a container, but waterlogged ground can damage roots. Improve poor soil with well-rotted organic matter and correct drainage problems before planting rather than trying to compensate with constant watering.

Season and establishment
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends planting young plants in late spring or early summer, once they are rooted and growing strongly. It describes spring as suitable for sowing seed indoors or outdoors, with the exact timing adjusted to local conditions. In regions with severe winters, start seed under protection and transplant after the local risk of damaging frost has passed; in mild climates, direct sowing can be timed for the local spring planting window.
Plan for a substantial perennial
Lovage is not a small windowsill herb. Its mature dimensions vary with climate, soil and age, so use the published figures as planning guidance rather than a guarantee. The RHS says an established plant can reach about 1 metre (3¼ feet) wide after a few years. North Carolina Extension reports plants about 3–6 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide, while University of Maryland Extension gives a height of 36–48 inches and recommends 30 inches between plants. Those regional figures describe the same large, vigorous habit from different growing conditions.
Spacing in the ground
The RHS suggests initially placing plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart, but its warning about a clump approaching 1 metre (3¼ feet) wide means that close initial spacing may require later thinning or division. Maryland’s 30-inch spacing is a more conservative starting point for a full-size planting. If you are planting more than one, leave enough room to walk around each clump without brushing against it or allowing foliage to block a path.

Keep it away from pets and vulnerable plants
Site lovage behind a secure garden barrier, inside a fenced bed or in an area pets cannot enter. A barrier is for access control, not a treatment for exposure; animals that can reach the foliage may chew it. Do not rely on a label saying an herb is edible for humans, nor on placing it beside a frequently used path where a loose leaf can fall into a pet’s reach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLovage can spread beyond its planting spot
Lovage may spread by rhizomes and by seed. North Carolina Extension says it can escape cultivation and is considered invasive in New England; that regional designation should not be generalized to every location. In any region, monitor the plant if you do not want volunteers appearing elsewhere.
Ways to limit spread
- Harvest or remove developing seed heads before seeds mature and fall.
- Pull unwanted seedlings while they are small and easy to identify.
- Inspect the area around the original clump for shoots arising from rhizomes.
- Dispose of removed seed heads and roots securely rather than scattering them in compost that will be spread around the garden.
- Check local invasive-plant guidance, especially if you garden in New England or near natural areas.
Regular seed harvesting reduces self-seeding but does not eliminate rhizome growth. A root barrier or a dedicated bed can make monitoring easier, yet neither replaces routine inspection.

Choosing a planting site: bed or container
Full sun, light shade and container culture can all work. The practical choice depends on whether you can keep the plant inaccessible to pets, maintain moisture without saturation, provide enough space and control spread.
| Site | Advantages | Points to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny in-ground bed | Ample room for a large perennial; soil moisture is easier to buffer with organic matter; no pot to tip over. | Foliage may be easy for pets to reach; monitor self-seeding and rhizomes; prevent the soil from drying during hot spells. |
| Lightly shaded in-ground bed | Can reduce heat and moisture stress while still providing suitable light; often convenient near a barrier or fenced area. | Still needs rich, moist, well-drained soil; shade does not reduce toxicity or remove the need for pet exclusion. |
| Large container | Separates the root system from garden beds and makes the plant easier to position behind a gate or on a secured area. | Requires frequent moisture checks, a stable heavy pot and drainage holes; tall flower stems can destabilize a lightweight container; the plant can overwhelm mixed herb plantings. |
How to plant lovage
Using a young plant
- Select the location. Choose full sun or light shade, confirm that pets cannot reach the foliage and allow for a mature spread measured in feet rather than inches.
- Prepare the soil. Work organic matter into a rich bed that drains freely. Correct standing-water problems before planting.
- Dig a broad hole. Make it at least as deep as the root ball and wider than the container so roots can expand into loosened soil.
- Set the plant level. Place the crown at the same level it occupied in its pot. Backfill firmly without burying the stem base.
- Water thoroughly. Soak the root zone after planting, then keep it evenly moist while roots establish.
- Add access control. Install or close a fence, gate or other physical separation before pets have an opportunity to investigate the new plant.
Starting from seed
RHS notes that lovage seed is widely available through garden centres and online seed suppliers. Sow in spring indoors or outdoors according to local conditions, then thin or transplant seedlings so the final plants have room for their large habit. Label the seedlings clearly and keep trays, young plants and seed packets away from pets that might chew them. Seed-grown plants can still produce the same toxic foliage and still require the same access precautions.

Lovage grows best in the ground but can be grown in a large container. The RHS recommends a heavy pot at least 30 cm (1 foot) wide and deep, with drainage holes. Use a fertile potting mix that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain, and place the container where it cannot be knocked over or reached by a curious animal.

A lightweight pot may become unstable when tall flower stems develop. Grow lovage alone rather than in a mixed herb container: its mature size can shade or crowd companions, and separating it makes watering, pruning and pet exclusion simpler. Check moisture more often than you would in the ground because containers dry quickly, but never leave the pot standing in water.
Care, monitoring and garden hygiene
Water and soil checks
Water whenever the surface begins to dry, using the soil condition rather than a fixed calendar as your guide. During hot or windy weather, inspect containers daily. In an in-ground bed, mulch can moderate moisture loss, but keep mulch away from the crown and do not use it to conceal drainage problems.
Seeds, flowers and pruning
Remove flower heads before seed dispersal if you want to limit volunteers. Wear gloves if the foliage irritates your skin, wash hands after handling and keep cut material away from pets. Pruning for size does not make the plant non-toxic; every removed piece should be collected rather than left where an animal can chew it.
Other garden hazards
ASPCA’s pet-gardening advice also calls for supervision around toxic plants and care with fertilizers, compost, cocoa mulch, garden chemicals and birdseed. Store these materials securely and prevent pets from entering a recently treated area. Lovage is the reason for special caution here, but a pet-safe garden requires attention to the entire planting and maintenance routine.
A practical decision checklist
- Pet access: Can every leaf, stem, flower and seed be kept out of reach?
- Space: Is there room for a plant potentially several feet tall and roughly 2–3 feet wide, depending on conditions?
- Moisture: Can the soil stay rich and moist without becoming waterlogged?
- Containment: Will you remove seed heads and watch for rhizome spread?
- Stability: If using a container, is it at least 30 cm (1 foot) wide and deep, heavy enough to resist tipping and fitted with drainage holes?
- Emergency plan: Do you have your veterinarian’s number and access to ASPCA Animal Poison Control before planting?
If you cannot reliably prevent access, choose a different plant for that area. Keeping lovage behind a barrier is the decisive safety measure; sun versus light shade is a growing preference, not a toxicity choice.
