Is It Better to Clean Solar Panels Yourself or Hire a Professional?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clean solar panels yourself only when you can reach every module from a stable position on the ground and the manufacturer permits your proposed method. Hire a qualified professional when cleaning involves a roof, fall exposure, awkward access, uncertain equipment, or unclear warranty instructions. The financial choice is site-specific: compare the likely energy recovered from removing your local soiling with the cost and risk of the work. Rainfall, deposits, system performance, electricity value and the service quote all matter.

There is no universal cleaning schedule. A condition-based decision—visual soiling, monitored output and local weather—usually makes more sense than washing on a fixed calendar.

Start with the safety decision

Access, not the dirt itself, is the first question. A rooftop array can be slippery, fragile and close to an edge. Modules, mounting hardware and roofing can also be damaged by poorly chosen tools or force. The Australian Government energy department gives this direct warning: “You should only allow a qualified person to clean your panels to avoid damage and ensure safety. It can be dangerous to clean your own panels.” That is Australian government guidance, not a universal legal rule, but the underlying fall and equipment hazards apply wherever a person is considering roof work.

YourHome, an Australian household-information service, makes the same practical point: “Washing solar panels generally involves getting up on your roof, so it is a job best done by a professional with the correct safety equipment.” Readers in other countries should check local work-at-height requirements, their installer’s advice and the module manual.

DIY may fit when all of these are true

  • The array is reachable from a stable ground position without climbing, leaning over an edge or placing a ladder against the modules.
  • You can keep both feet on a safe surface while using a hose or a compatible water-fed pole with a soft, nonabrasive head.
  • The module manufacturer explicitly permits the water, tool and detergent method you plan to use.
  • Soiling is visible or output monitoring suggests a plausible loss, rather than cleaning being done simply because a calendar reminder appeared.
  • You understand how to avoid electrical equipment, exposed wiring and roof drainage hazards.

Professional cleaning is the safer choice when any of these apply

  • Panels are on a roof, steep pitch, high wall, carport canopy or another location with fall exposure.
  • The roof is fragile, wet, mossy or obstructed by skylights, antennas, trees or other equipment.
  • Bird droppings, construction dust, salt, pollen or mineral deposits are heavy or persistent and require specialist access or treatment.
  • The manual is missing or unclear, or you are concerned that a method could affect a warranty.
  • You want an inspection of mounting, cables or roof condition as well as surface cleaning.
  • You do not have appropriate access equipment, liability cover or confidence to complete the work without improvising.

DIY versus professional: a practical comparison

Decision factor DIY may fit Hire a professional
Access Every module can be reached from a stable ground position with no fall exposure. Roof access, steep or fragile roofing, high panels, obstacles or any need to lean over an edge.
Manufacturer instructions The manual clearly permits the proposed water and tool method. Instructions are unavailable, restrictions are unclear or warranty compliance is a concern.
Soiling Localized, visible deposits that can be removed gently and safely. Heavy, baked-on or recurring deposits, or contamination that needs specialist equipment.
Economics Water and tool costs are low and the expected production benefit justifies your time. The quote is reasonable compared with the likely production benefit or the cost of safe access equipment.
Scope Surface washing only. Cleaning combined with an agreed inspection, access plan and documentation.

Why soiling matters—and why it does not automatically justify washing

Dust, pollen, bird droppings, salt spray and other deposits block or scatter sunlight. The resulting loss varies sharply by climate, tilt, rainfall, nearby roads, agriculture and the type of deposit. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) reported in its FY2024 summary that soiling losses can be “upwards of 6% losses per year.” That figure should not be read as a typical residential loss or as a forecast for your system; the summary does not establish the conditions behind that upper-end observation.

NREL’s operations-and-maintenance guidance says the cleaning interval should be condition-based or scheduled according to site economics. It identifies soil accumulation, rainfall, cleaning cost, module efficiency, capacity factor and the value of delivered electricity as relevant variables. A panel that receives frequent, effective rain may not repay frequent paid cleaning. A dry, dusty site or an array beneath trees may justify cleaning sooner.

A location-specific example

A 2019 NREL report excerpt cites a Mesa, Arizona, example from Naeem (2014): modeled annual soiling loss was 1.91% with no cleaning, 1.52% with one cleaning per year, 1.32% with two and 1.20% with three. Those values are a study- and location-specific example, and the excerpt does not provide enough detail here to validate its assumptions for a home elsewhere. Use it to understand diminishing returns, not to predict your bill savings.

Check the system before touching it

  1. Find the module and inverter manuals. Look for the manufacturer’s approved water quality, tools, detergents, temperature limits and any warranty exclusions. The manual governs if it is stricter than general cleaning advice.
  2. Assess access from the ground. Walk the perimeter and identify whether a hose or water-fed pole can reach without a ladder, roof step or unstable footing. If not, stop and obtain a professional quote.
  3. Inspect from a distance. Note bird droppings, construction residue, cracked glass, loose frames, damaged cables or standing water. Do not touch damaged equipment; ask the installer or a qualified technician to assess it.
  4. Check weather and panel temperature. Choose a calm, dry period when modules are cool. Water evaporating on hot glass can leave deposits and create thermal stress; follow any temperature warning in the manual.
  5. Record a baseline. Note recent energy production under comparable weather, or take a clear photograph of the soiling. This gives you a way to judge whether cleaning changed performance.

How to clean safely from the ground

This procedure is for an array that is genuinely reachable without roof work. It is not a reason to climb onto a roof. NREL’s 2019 O&M guide describes a bucket, strip cleaner and squeegee as an economical approach, while its facility-scale guidance permits plain water or mild dishwashing detergent. Both sources emphasize the manufacturer’s instructions and caution against aggressive tools and chemicals.

  1. Gather approved equipment. Use plain or demineralized water if the manual allows it, a clean bucket, a soft nonabrasive strip cleaner or compatible water-fed pole head, and a squeegee designed not to scratch glass. Add mild soap only when the manufacturer specifically allows or recommends it.
  2. Rinse gently. From the ground, use a normal hose flow to loosen loose dust. Never use a pressure washer or a concentrated jet that could force water under seals or damage components.
  3. Wash a small section. Work with the soft head and clean water, keeping grit from being dragged across the glass. Replace dirty water rather than spreading abrasive sediment.
  4. Remove residue. Use the approved squeegee with light, controlled passes. Do not scrape bonded deposits with blades or abrasive pads.
  5. Rinse and inspect. Confirm that no soap film, streaks or mineral spots remain. If the manual requires a final demineralized-water rinse, follow that instruction.
  6. Recheck performance. Compare production under similar sunlight and temperature after the panels are dry. A change that is smaller than expected may mean soiling was not the main constraint.

A water-fed pole can extend reach while you remain on the ground; it does not make roof access safe. Select a soft, manufacturer-compatible head, keep the pole stable and stop if you cannot control it without stepping into a fall-risk position.

What not to use

  • No high-pressure water. NREL specifically advises against pressure washing.
  • No abrasive brushes, pads or solvents. They can scratch coatings, damage seals or leave residues. A soft strip cleaner is different from a stiff, abrasive brush.
  • No harsh detergents or household chemicals. Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office advises following the manufacturer’s recommendations and using water rather than cleaning products. Mild dishwashing detergent appears in NREL facility guidance only where the system instructions allow it.
  • No improvised roof work. A ladder, harness or plank is not a safe substitute for a planned professional access system and training.
  • No electrical disassembly. Do not unplug connectors, open inverters or alter isolators as part of washing. Use the shutdown procedure only if the manufacturer or installer specifically requires it.

How to choose and brief a professional

Ask for a written quote from a qualified local solar-panel cleaner rather than accepting a vague “wash” price. Current residential prices, licensing rules, insurance standards and warranty terms vary by location and are not universal.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How will you reach the array, and what fall-protection equipment will you use?
  • Are you insured for roof and property damage, and can you provide evidence of cover?
  • Will you follow the module manufacturer’s specified water, tool and detergent requirements?
  • Does the quote include setup, travel, water, difficult-access charges, rinsing and removal of visible residue?
  • Will you document pre-existing damage and tell me if you find cracked glass, loose clamps, cable problems or roof defects?
  • Is this cleaning only, or does it include an electrical or structural inspection by an appropriately qualified person?
  • What result will you report—photographs, a production comparison, or simply confirmation that surfaces were washed?

Keep the cleaning scope separate from repairs. A cleaner should not promise to repair electrical or roofing defects unless properly qualified and contracted to do so.

Work out whether cleaning pays

The relevant comparison is not “dirty versus clean” in the abstract. It is the value of electricity recovered over the period before the next effective rain or cleaning, less the cost and risk of the work.

A simple planning equation is:

Expected net benefit = (recoverable kilowatt-hours × value of delivered electricity) − cleaning cost − any equipment or access cost.

You will not know the recoverable kilowatt-hours precisely without site data. Use your monitoring history, visible soiling and local weather to form a conservative range. NREL’s factors—soil accumulation, rainfall, capacity factor, module efficiency, cleaning cost and electricity value—explain why the same service can be worthwhile at one property and uneconomic at another.

Account for rain and diminishing returns

If substantial rain is likely soon after a paid wash, the timing can erase much of the benefit. Conversely, a long dry season, nearby unpaved traffic or repeated bird deposits can make earlier cleaning more valuable. Additional cleanings may recover progressively less output, as the Mesa example illustrates. Set a trigger based on observed deposits or a sustained production change rather than an automatic monthly or quarterly appointment.

Do not use historical figures as today’s quote

The 2019 NREL excerpt attributes historical figures of about $1 per square metre for residential cleaning, $0.25 per square metre for large systems and approximately 1 litre of water per square metre to Naeem (2014). These are reported study figures, not current household prices or a local quote. Obtain several local estimates and ask what access and insurance assumptions each one includes.

Regional guidance and warranty limits

Australian government and YourHome advice is especially conservative because roof access and electrical work can be dangerous. It should be treated as jurisdiction-specific guidance rather than a legal rule for every country. Elsewhere, check the rules that apply to work at height, electrical isolation and contractor licensing in your area.

Regardless of location, the module manual and installer documentation are the best sources for warranty-sensitive details. General institutional guidance favors plain water and permits mild soap only when the manufacturer recommends it; it does not override a stricter product instruction.

When cleaning does not restore output

If production remains low after a gentle, approved cleaning, do not keep scrubbing harder. Compare weather, shading and inverter status with your baseline. Persistent underperformance can come from shading, a failed optimizer or inverter, wiring faults, module damage or inaccurate monitoring rather than surface dirt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the installer or a qualified solar technician for diagnosis when you see cracked glass, delamination, hot spots, loose mounting, exposed cable, repeated inverter faults or a sustained output decline. Cleaning personnel should not be expected to diagnose or repair those conditions unless their qualifications and contract specifically cover them.

A maintenance plan that avoids unnecessary work

  1. Monitor production monthly. Record unusual changes alongside weather and shading conditions.
  2. Inspect visually from the ground. Look for new deposits, tree growth, storm damage and obvious cable or frame issues without climbing.
  3. Clean only when evidence supports it. Use the approved ground-based method if safe; otherwise request a qualified service.
  4. Recheck after cleaning. Compare like-for-like weather rather than expecting an immediate, guaranteed percentage increase.
  5. Review after local changes. Construction, new trees, agricultural dust, wildfire smoke or bird activity can alter the right interval.

The best answer is therefore conditional: DIY is acceptable for safe, ground-reachable, manufacturer-approved cleaning; professional service is better whenever access, equipment, warranty or diagnosis is uncertain. Let measured soiling and site economics—not a universal schedule—decide how often the work is repeated.
