Where the Interlochen Community Art Trail is planned to go
The proposed route is intended to link parks, schools, neighborhoods and local businesses, and pass Interlochen Arts Academy on its way between Green Lake Township Memorial Park and US-31. The project describes a continuous connection for people traveling without motor vehicles, including those heading between the academy and town. The project website presents the trail as both a transportation link and a way to experience local art and the natural environment; those are goals, not measured results.

What construction has begun
Phase one: Memorial Park to Vagabond Road
A December 13, 2025 report in The Ticker said phase-one construction was underway on a former railroad grade cleared by Green Lake Township. At that time, the Friends group was seeking bids for a crushed-stone base. That dated update does not confirm whether the phase is now finished, nor does the project website provide a current phase-by-phase construction report.

The 2025 report said later phases would be more involved, costly and time-consuming than the initial segment. The sources do not establish their current construction status, whether funding has been secured, or whether estimates and schedules have changed. The overall trail remains presented as planned rather than open on the project website.

Planned trail design and construction features
The project website describes a planned 10-foot-wide paved path, ADA ramps, enhanced crosswalks and a bridge over the Betsie River. These are announced design elements, not confirmation that each feature has been built. The first segment’s reported work on a former railroad grade and proposed crushed-stone base is distinct from the planned paved path described for the overall trail.
Why the route is being pursued
Interlochen Center for the Arts facilities and maintenance director Eric Gray told The Ticker that students need a safer way to get into town, particularly because walking along a busy road can be a concern for young people unfamiliar with the area. Gray described the trail as a way to provide “a safe, interactive experience to get into town off the main road.” Potential users identified in the report include academy and camp students, guests and staff, visitors, Interlochen State Park campers, and downtown businesses. The project’s safety and community benefits are intended outcomes; no measured impact has been reported.

Estimated cost, funding and possible completion
In the December 2025 report, Gray put the total project estimate at around $3.5 million and said costs could rise depending on how long completion takes. This is an estimate attributed to Gray, not a final or independently audited cost. The report said funding still needed to be secured, likely through a mix of public and private sources, while right-of-way permissions had been obtained.

Gray described full completion as possible as soon as 2028 in an optimistic scenario. That is not a confirmed deadline or current schedule. Green Lake Township Supervisor Marvin Radke noted that establishing a trail can help make the case for public funding, while many grants support extending or improving a trail rather than starting one.

What is confirmed—and what remains uncertain
- Planned route: 3.5 miles between Memorial Park and US-31, with connections intended for nearby destinations.
- Reported progress: Phase one, Memorial Park to Vagabond Road, was underway as of December 13, 2025.
- Planned design: a 10-foot paved path, ADA ramps, enhanced crosswalks and a Betsie River bridge.
- Open questions: whether phase one is complete, the status and funding of later phases, the final project cost and a firm opening date.
