The century-old Canandaigua YMCA in Canandaigua, New York, has been replaced by the Sands Family YMCA, a 75,000-square-foot facility designed by CJS Architects. More than 8,500 square feet of Kingspan KS Mini Micro-Rib insulated metal panels (IMPs) form a prominent part of its exterior enclosure.
The project combines athletics, medical care and early learning under one roof. Its panel palette, horizontal installation and continuous insulated envelope were selected to give the building a contemporary profile while fitting its rural setting. Project coverage reports enclosure and construction advantages, but does not publish a measured energy-savings figure for this building.

What replaced the old Canandaigua YMCA?
The Sands Family YMCA is not a simple replacement gym. It is a multipurpose community facility planned to bring several services together in a single building. CJS Architects designed the 75,000-square-foot project to support exercise, aquatic programs, health-related services and early-childhood learning.

A building organized around several kinds of care
The listed amenities show why the replacement required more than a conventional recreation building. The facility includes an indoor recreational pool, splash pad, lap pool and spa, along with a gymnasium containing hard-court and turf areas. Medical care and early learning add additional occupancy patterns and operating requirements to the athletic spaces.
That mix affects the building envelope. Wet areas, large occupied rooms, high traffic and spaces used by children all place different demands on temperature control, durability and maintenance. The project sources describe the IMPs as part of a continuous exterior enclosure intended to address those demands, while the building’s interior program gives the envelope a practical job beyond appearance.
How insulated metal panels were used
An insulated metal panel is a factory-assembled wall panel that combines metal faces with an insulating core. Installed in a coordinated line, the panels can provide the exterior finish and a substantial portion of the wall’s thermal layer at the same time. Joints, corners, openings and transitions still require careful detailing; the panel itself does not eliminate the need to coordinate the complete wall assembly.

Three colors, one coordinated palette
The exterior uses Bone White, Driftwood and Sandstone. Rather than assigning each color to a separate wing or creating a regular stripe pattern, the design team randomized the palette. That approach lets adjacent panels vary without making the building look accidental.
Jonathan Claeys, a senior project architect at CJS Architects, said the team randomized the IMP colors and chose horizontal installation to give the building a more modern appearance. The horizontal lines help the long elevations read as a unified composition instead of a stack of small vertical bays.
Horizontal orientation and the rural setting
The project team also connected the panel orientation to the site. Jonathan Genrich, a senior project architect at CJS Architects, said the horizontal installation helped spread the building across the site without increasing its apparent verticality. That is a useful distinction for a large community facility: the same floor area can feel less imposing when its strongest visual lines run laterally.
Genrich also described the panels as a way to connect different materials while maintaining clean lines. In this project, the IMPs are therefore doing two jobs at once. They are an enclosure component, and they are the visual device that helps reconcile a large, modern facility with a rural skyline.

What benefits the project team reported
Project coverage attributes several enclosure benefits to the IMP system. The panels were described as creating a continuous insulated envelope with airtight and watertight seals. The stated intent was to limit unwanted heat flow and air movement while helping indoor temperatures remain steadier.
Those are system-level advantages, not a published performance result for the Sands Family YMCA. Neither project source provides an energy model, utility comparison, measured air-leakage test, thermal imaging study or control building. The available material therefore supports a description of the design intent and reported construction benefits, not a numerical claim about energy reduction.
| Claim or characteristic | What the project coverage establishes | What is not stated |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous insulation | The IMPs were described as forming a continuous insulated exterior envelope. | Panel thickness, tested R-value and whole-wall thermal performance. |
| Air and water control | The coverage reports airtight and watertight seals as a benefit of the system. | Project-specific air-permeability or water-penetration test results. |
| Energy use | The sources say the enclosure could support lower energy use and steadier temperatures. | Measured savings, baseline utility data or a comparison with the former YMCA. |
| Installation speed | The architect reports that most panel installation occurred during harsh winter months and helped keep the schedule on track. | Installation duration, crew size or a quantified comparison with another cladding system. |
Why winter installation mattered
Genrich reported that the contractor completed most of the panel installation during harsh winter conditions. He credited the system’s installation simplicity and speed with helping maintain the construction schedule.

The account is significant because winter work can expose open wall areas to snow, wind and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Closing the enclosure with a panel system that arrives as a coordinated exterior-and-insulation component can reduce the amount of time that large wall sections remain unfinished. The project sources do not identify the contractor, give a number of winter installation days or compare the schedule with masonry, site-built metal framing or another cladding approach, so the benefit should be understood as the architect’s project account rather than a measured productivity study.

What a contractor still has to coordinate
Fast panel placement does not remove the need for sequencing. A comparable project would still need an agreed layout for panel joints, openings, corners, base conditions and connections to roofs or other wall materials. Window and door flashings, penetrations, trims and sealants must align with the panel manufacturer’s details and the architect’s air- and water-control strategy.
The Sands Family YMCA coverage does not publish those drawings or installation details. The useful lesson is procedural: the schedule advantage of IMPs depends on having the details, materials and trades coordinated before panels arrive, especially when much of the work is planned for winter.

Aquatic areas
The recreational pool, splash pad, lap pool and spa create spaces where moisture and temperature control are central to occupant comfort. A continuous insulated wall can help the design team establish a consistent boundary around these rooms, but the project sources do not report humidity measurements, condensation analysis or pool-area operating data. Those items would have to be verified through the project’s engineering documents rather than inferred from the panel selection.

Medical care and early learning
Medical-care and early-learning spaces bring a different scale and rhythm to the facility than the gym and pools. Randomized panel colors help the exterior accommodate those varied zones without assigning a different cladding language to every function. The result is a single campus identity rather than a collection of visibly unrelated additions.
Design lessons for owners and architects considering IMPs
The Sands Family YMCA case offers several decisions that can be carried into other community, recreation or institutional projects. They are design and coordination questions, not claims that every project will achieve the same result.
- Set the visual strategy early. Decide whether panels will run horizontally or vertically before elevations, openings and trim packages are finalized. Orientation changes how the building reads from a distance and how joints align at corners.
- Use color variation deliberately. A randomized palette such as Bone White, Driftwood and Sandstone can soften a large elevation, but the distribution should be documented so installers know the intended pattern.
- Coordinate every transition. IMP walls meet roofs, foundations, windows, doors and other materials. Drawings should show how insulation, air control, water shedding and finish trims continue through each junction.
- Separate product claims from project evidence. A manufacturer’s tested thermal or weather data describes the panel under specified conditions. It does not, by itself, establish the energy use or airtightness of a completed building.
- Plan for the installation season. If winter enclosure is part of the schedule, procure panels, trims, sealants and fasteners together and confirm storage and handling requirements before the first shipment.
- Define acceptance checks. The construction team should agree how panel alignment, joint engagement, sealant continuity, fastener installation and damage repair will be inspected and recorded.
What is known—and what remains unpublished
The public project accounts establish the building’s size, program, panel product, panel area, colors, orientation and the design team’s reasons for using the system. They also record the architect’s view that the IMPs offered continuous insulation and helped keep installation moving during winter.
