Edmonton Public Library’s Capilano Branch is a compact civic building that makes its setting beside Fulton Ravine part of the library experience. A ravine-facing window wall, daylight-filled reading areas, ground-floor access and flexible community facilities bring landscape, study and neighborhood life into one 11,000-square-foot branch. The result is less a building placed beside nature than a public room oriented toward it.
Capilano Branch at a glance
| Project detail | Published information |
|---|---|
| Location | 9915 67 Street NW, beside Fulton Ravine in east Edmonton |
| Opening | November 8, 2018 |
| Library service history | EPL had served Capilano since 1966 |
| Project cost | $11.8 million |
| Area reported by Edmonton Public Library and PCL | 11,000 square feet |
| Area reported in the Sherwin-Williams case study | 12,000 square feet |
| Design team | Patkau Architects, design architect; Group2 Architecture, prime consultant |
| PCL-reported annual visitors | More than 165,000 |
| Sherwin-Williams case-study estimate | Almost 200,000 visitors annually |
Edmonton Public Library’s opening announcement provides the 11,000-square-foot description, while PCL uses the same area on its project page. A Sherwin-Williams project case study calls the building 12,000 square feet. Those are different published figures, so the area should be identified by source rather than presented as one settled number. The same caution applies to the two visitor figures: PCL reports more than 165,000 annual visitors, while the case study gives an estimate of almost 200,000.

The branch serves Capilano, Gold Bar, Fulton Place and nearby residents. The City of Edmonton describes it as a neighborhood place intended to support walkability, not simply a replacement container for books and computers.
Why the new branch moved to the ground floor
The project replaced a former Capilano Mall location on a second floor. Edmonton Public Library’s historical FAQ records practical access problems there, including elevator outages. A standalone, ground-level branch removed that dependency and made entry more consistent for people arriving with mobility devices, strollers, children or materials to carry.

That change also alters the library’s relationship with the surrounding streets. Instead of asking visitors to navigate a mall and then find an upper-level entrance, the new branch presents its public functions at grade. The current Capilano location listing identifies study space, public computers and printing, and hands-on digital and fabrication services among the facilities available to visitors.
Accessibility was a recurring priority in the earlier planning process. The resident consultation report records strong support for an accessible branch and for a peaceful, light-filled setting, while also documenting concerns about traffic, parking, the proposed siting and possible effects on green space. The engagement therefore shows both enthusiasm for the new civic amenity and real questions about how it would fit into the neighborhood.
How the design brings Fulton Ravine indoors
The building’s central architectural move is visual and environmental: interior spaces face the ravine. EPL described natural light, seating and landscaping working together with the neighboring landscape. The eastern window wall described in the project case study makes the ravine visible from inside, allowing daylight and seasonal change to register in reading and study areas.

A person reading, working at a public computer or waiting for a program can see trees and the ravine edge rather than an interior corridor alone. The view is not decorative afterthought; it organizes where people sit and how the building is experienced over the course of a day.

Sherwin-Williams’ case study describes three parallel building zones, wood finishes and black metal panels. Those material and zoning observations come from a supplier’s account of the project, so they are best read as a description of the design approach rather than an independent performance assessment. Together, the zones separate quieter study from active public and making uses while keeping the building visually connected to the ravine.
City Architect Carol Belanger summarized the ambition when the branch received design recognition, saying, “Capilano Library really punches over its weight when it comes to design.” The compact footprint does not eliminate civic presence; it concentrates it around light, outlook and a legible public entrance.
What people can do inside the branch
Quiet work and everyday library use
EPL’s opening description includes quiet study space, seating and a larger community room. These are deliberately different types of public room: one supports concentration, one supports informal occupation, and one can host organized gatherings. The combination lets a small neighborhood branch serve people who need silence as well as people who come for conversation or events.

Making and digital services
The makerspace extends the branch beyond conventional lending and reading. The current EPL listing names 3D printing, digital conversion, a heat press, sewing and vinyl cutting, alongside public computers and printing. These are library services, not consumer-product recommendations; access, booking rules and operating details should be confirmed through the branch’s current listing before a visit.

A room for gathering without a purchase
Capilano’s community role is also expressed in who is allowed to use it and on what terms. Caroline Land, the branch manager, called the building “a wonderful gathering place for people” and emphasized that visitors do not need to spend money or buy anything to be there. She described it as a public space where people can be freely. That principle matters in a neighborhood with limited indoor places where someone can study, meet, wait, attend a program or simply sit without making a purchase.
A changing landscape as part of the interior
Light is treated as an active element rather than a fixed brightness level. Land described the changing daylight as “an ever-changing artwork of natural light.” Morning and afternoon conditions, weather and seasonal foliage alter the appearance of the study areas and the ravine-facing edge. The building can therefore feel different without changing its furniture or program.
Pilar Martinez, EPL’s chief executive officer, made the same connection in the opening announcement: “The design ties in natural light, seating areas and landscaping with the neighbouring ravine, while also incorporating all of the features and services our customers need.” The statement captures the project’s balancing act. Views and daylight are valuable only if they coexist with practical library functions, adequate seating, technology and spaces for community use.

Public consultation identified several hopes: dependable accessibility, abundant natural light, a calm setting and a possible relationship to the wider river-valley trail system. Residents also asked whether the library would be large enough, whether it would have solar panels and what would happen in the makerspace.

The same consultation records reservations about traffic, parking, the site itself and the loss or disturbance of green space. Those concerns are important because a ravine-edge project changes more than a building. It changes arrival patterns, views and the balance between developed and natural ground. The consultation record was not unanimous approval; it was a negotiation between the desire for a useful civic facility and the responsibility to fit it carefully into a valued landscape.

Published sources use different language about LEED. EPL’s opening announcement said the $11.8 million project was targeting LEED Silver. Sherwin-Williams later said the library was working toward LEED Silver. PCL’s project page uses the phrase “LEED Silver Certification.” Because those formulations do not independently establish the same thing, a final certification claim should be checked against an official certification record rather than inferred from the project descriptions.
PCL does provide specific construction-diversion figures. Its project page says 95% of construction waste was diverted from landfill; 83% of the diverted material consisted of wood, metals, drywall and concrete; and 23% of new product costs came from recyclable materials. These are project-level figures reported by PCL and should not be generalized into a broader claim about every aspect of the building’s operational performance.

The resident questions about solar panels also illustrate the difference between a requested feature and a documented one. The consultation report records the question, but it does not establish that solar panels were installed. The available project descriptions similarly support careful wording about goals and materials rather than assumptions about unreported systems.

Recognition and what it says about the building
The City of Edmonton reports that Capilano Branch received an Award of Excellence in the 2022 Prairie Design Awards. That recognition came after the branch had been in use for several years, highlighting the building as civic architecture as well as a functioning library.
Sherwin-Williams’ case study also reports a 2020 AIA/ALA Library Building Award and a 2019 Wood Design Merit Award. Those awards are cited here as reported in that case study; readers seeking an authoritative award record should consult the relevant awarding organizations before treating the claims as independently verified.
The awards help explain why a relatively small branch attracts architectural attention. Its achievement is not scale. It is the alignment of a modest footprint, a difficult edge condition, daylight, public access and a varied program. The building gives a neighborhood library a recognizable civic identity without turning it into an object detached from daily use.

- Check the current branch listing. Use EPL’s Capilano location page for opening information, available services and any booking requirements.
- Choose the space that fits your visit. Quiet study areas suit focused work; the community room and seating areas support meetings, programs and informal gathering.
- Confirm makerspace details before arriving. 3D printing, digital conversion, heat pressing, sewing and vinyl cutting may have specific hours, orientations, booking steps or material rules.
- Plan for a ground-level arrival. The standalone, grade-level layout was created to provide more consistent access than the former second-floor mall branch.
- Use the ravine outlook as part of the visit. The window wall and daylight are integral to the building’s design, so seating along the landscape-facing edge offers the clearest experience of the project’s defining idea.
Why Capilano matters as a public building
Capilano Branch demonstrates how a neighborhood library can do more with a compact building by making its context perform architectural work. Fulton Ravine supplies outlook, changing light and a sense of depth. The library supplies places to read, study, make, gather and spend time without a purchase. Ground-floor access addresses a specific failure of the previous location, while the community room and makerspace widen the definition of what a branch can host.
The building’s value is consequently measured in more than floor area or visitor totals. Its published numbers vary by source, but the design strategy is consistent across the accounts: connect people to a landscape, put essential services at grade and make a small civic building welcoming enough to function as everyday neighborhood infrastructure.
