Inside Brave New Eco’s Glenorchy Retreat Shaped by a University Friendship

Ellie Rennie and Jason Potts’ one-bedroom retreat in New Zealand’s Rees Valley is the result of a long friendship, a demanding mountain site and a deliberately modest brief. Rennie asked Melbourne designer Megan Norgate—her friend since university—to help create a durable holiday cabin at the foot of the Richardson Range. The finished building combines a single gable, a mezzanine, regional schist and a compact set of carefully separated service spaces rather than the expansive glass pavilion often associated with view-driven retreats.

Brave New Eco’s design, developed with co-principal Joanne Nataprawira, treats the landscape as a setting to inhabit quietly. Its character comes from the work required to reach the site, the decision to use stone instead of the originally proposed copper cladding, and an interior palette of timber, clay-lime, limestone, copper and green tile.

A university friendship became the project’s foundation

Rennie and Norgate met at university and spent holidays together around Glenorchy. Years later, when Rennie and Potts imagined a retreat in the area, they asked Norgate to turn that shared familiarity with the region into a building. Norgate’s Melbourne studio, Brave New Eco, worked with Nataprawira on the design.

The brief was personal but specific: a warm, robust place for holidays, informed by two familiar building types. The owners looked to a tramping hut and a Swiss chalet, not as styles to copy literally but as references for shelter, durability and an easy relationship with the weather. The desired result was a small building that could feel generous inside without becoming visually dominant in the valley.

Norgate describes the scale this way: “It’s like a small cabin scaled up or a barn-style building shrunk to two-thirds.” Nataprawira’s companion observation is shorter: “It’s human scale inside.” Those descriptions explain why the project is a single-volume retreat with a mezzanine rather than a collection of oversized rooms.

Building a platform in the Rees Valley

The house sits on four hectares near Glenorchy, at the foot of the Richardson Range. The feature describes a difficult, largely undeveloped site where the owners spent years preparing the basic infrastructure before construction of the cabin could begin. Rennie and Potts cleared sections by hand, built a road and culverts from schist found on the property, installed a bridge over running water and formed a small building platform among existing foliage.

That sequence matters architecturally. The retreat was not placed on an already serviced suburban lot; access and ground preparation became part of the project. The finished platform gives the cabin a broad panorama while allowing vegetation to remain an important part of the approach and outlook.

Builder Joe Daly of ModBox contributed practical, on-the-ground advice. Because the designers were working remotely from Australia, local knowledge was especially important during the difficult site phase. DK Architecture prepared the architectural documentation. Norgate acknowledges the unusual arrangement: “It was a bit nerve-wracking as we are so used to being right there on site,” she says.

A simple gable keeps the retreat grounded

The completed building has one bedroom, a double-volume main space and a mezzanine beneath a single gabled roof. Its form draws on local vernacular buildings and European cold-climate architecture, but the proportions were tuned to avoid a monumental interior. Roof pitch and height were adjusted so that the volume could contain a generous living area while retaining an approachable scale.

The arrangement makes the living space the visual and social centre. The mezzanine adds usable level change without turning the cabin into a stack of disconnected rooms. From inside, the roof form is legible; outside, the single gable reads as a quiet, familiar silhouette against the range.

Rather than chasing maximum glazing, the design balances outlook with enclosure. The owners wanted views, but they also wanted a hut-like sense of refuge. This is why the material and opening decisions are inseparable: the walls do more than hold windows; they establish depth, shade and a sense of protection from the exposed setting.

Why schist changed the window strategy

Copper was the initial idea for the exterior cladding. The project ultimately switched to schist, a stone available on the property and closely associated with the region. That was not a cosmetic substitution. The heavier cladding led the team to reduce the number of windows, and the resulting thicker walls created deep reveals around the openings.

Those reveals give the interior a more sheltered character than a fully glazed pavilion would have. They frame selected views instead of treating every wall as a continuous picture window. The stone also ties the building to the ground work that made it possible: schist was used for the road and culverts, so the material appears in both the infrastructure and the finished architecture.

Design decision What the feature reports Effect on the retreat
Cladding The initial copper idea was replaced by schist. Fewer windows and deeper wall reveals, with a stronger connection to local material.
Overall form A single gable with a double-volume room and mezzanine. A compact footprint with a generous central volume and a recognizable hut/chalet profile.
Site placement A small platform was made between foliage after extensive hand preparation. Broad views without presenting the building as a freestanding object stripped from its surroundings.

Interior materials that make a small volume feel substantial

The interior relies on texture and patina rather than an abundance of objects. Roughsawn Southland maple beech lines the ceilings, adding visible grain and a tactile, regional note beneath the roof. Walls use an Otsumagaki clay-lime finish, whose earthen character contrasts with the more precise joinery and metal details. Floors are tumbled Bayadere limestone, chosen for a worn, durable surface suited to a retreat where boots and outdoor gear are part of daily life.

The kitchen combines a familiar furniture language with durable materials. Solid American oak Shaker-style cabinets were made in Tauranga, with a copper splashback and copper bench details. The cabinetry was ordered near the end of the manufacturer’s operations and then stored in a Southland shed for two years while the wider project progressed. Because it was a modular system, the team could rearrange elements as the building developed rather than treating the original layout as irreversible.

Copper recurs in tapware and other fixtures, linking the kitchen to smaller points of contact throughout the cabin. In the bathrooms, green-toned tiles bring in a colour associated with the surrounding landscape. Shower floors use pebble tiles; Rennie explains their personal resonance: “The pebble tiles in the shower always make me think of the nearby riverbeds and their round green river stones.”

Service spaces are separated instead of hidden in one multipurpose room

Although the retreat is compact, the plan gives practical tasks their own places. The feature identifies separate amenity spaces, two WCs, a shower and a washroom. There is also a laundry, drying and boot room, plus a second shower that can be reached from outside.

This arrangement supports the way a mountain retreat is actually used. Wet boots, drying clothing and post-walk showers do not have to pass through the main living area. An exterior-access shower can serve people arriving from outdoors, while the internal rooms remain more comfortable for cooking, reading and gathering. The plan therefore adds utility through separation rather than by enlarging the central room.

Wood heat, solar equipment and a battery

A cast-iron Homewood Companion woodburner sits in the living area. The firewood comes from trees felled on the property, making the heating ritual part of the retreat’s connection to its land. The stove is a visible, room-defining object rather than hidden plant, reinforcing the hut-like brief.

How the owners use the cabin

Rennie and Potts use the building as a private holiday retreat. When friends and family visit, they can stay in a nearby small wooden cabin or pitch a tent. That additional accommodation allows the main one-bedroom building to remain deliberately modest while still supporting gatherings.

The feature gives no booking details, nightly rate or visitor policy. It presents the project as the owners’ retreat, not as a publicly advertised accommodation business. The surrounding land, outbuildings and outdoor options are part of the owners’ way of hosting, but they do not establish public access.

Remote design, local judgment

Working from Australia meant that Brave New Eco could not make the frequent site visits typical of a nearby project. The remote process placed greater responsibility on the local builder and documentation team to interpret ground conditions, access and construction realities. Daly’s input from the site helped connect the design intent with the road, bridge, culverts and platform that had to be built first.

The result demonstrates a useful division of roles: the owners supplied long knowledge of the place and a clear emotional brief; the designers shaped the architectural language and material relationships; local professionals dealt with the immediate physical conditions. The cabin’s quietness is therefore not accidental. It comes from coordinating a strong, simple idea across a remote workflow and a demanding site.

What this project demonstrates about small landscape retreats

This Glenorchy cabin offers several design lessons without pretending to be a universal formula.

  • Start with the site’s real work. A remote building may require roads, culverts, bridges and a stable platform before the visible architecture begins. Planning those items is part of the design brief.
  • Use a limited form to control scale. One gable and a mezzanine can create spatial variety while keeping the outside silhouette simple.
  • Let material choices alter the architecture. Replacing copper with schist changed window quantity and wall depth, not just surface colour.
  • Frame views selectively. Fewer openings can produce deeper reveals and a stronger sense of shelter than uninterrupted glazing.
  • Give outdoor mess its own route. Boot, drying and shower spaces make a small retreat easier to live in when weather and terrain are part of everyday use.
  • Make room for future adjustment. Modular kitchen components allowed the layout to change while construction continued.

These are observations from one realized building, not performance rankings or a specification for every alpine site. A different climate, access route or planning context could lead to different structural and servicing decisions.

Facts the published feature does not establish

The Homestyle account does not state the cabin’s floor area, construction budget, consent details, completion date, energy output or measured operating performance. It also does not provide technical specifications for the solar system, hydronic installation, battery or woodburner. Those omissions matter when using the project as a reference: the retreat can be understood through its form, materials, site strategy and reported daily use, but its costs and quantitative performance cannot be calculated from the published description.

The Bottom Line

Brave New Eco’s Glenorchy retreat succeeds by making a small, durable building feel rooted rather than spectacular: a university friendship set the brief, years of site work made the platform possible, and schist, timber, clay-lime, limestone and copper give the one-bedroom cabin its warm, human-scaled character.
