Imported vs UK-grown timber: cost, strength, sustainability and availability

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Imported timber is not automatically stronger, cheaper or less sustainable than UK-grown timber. The right choice depends on the declared structural grade, species, moisture condition, dimensions, treatment, documented legality and the delivered cost for your project. C16 is adequate for most construction; C24 is a higher strength class often stocked in imported sections and is useful where design loads or spans require it.

Is imported timber better than UK-grown timber?

Origin is a poor shortcut for judging timber performance. A piece of imported softwood with a C24 structural classification may outperform a UK-grown piece graded C16, but that difference comes from the measured grade, species, defects and moisture condition—not from crossing a border. UK-grown timber can also be graded for structural use, and imported timber can be poorly suited if it arrives with the wrong section, treatment or moisture condition.

Choose the source only after the design requirement is clear. Ask for the structural grade, dimensions, species or species group, treatment class, moisture condition and delivery date. Then compare equivalent material from more than one supplier. A responsible purchase also includes evidence that the forest source and chain of custody are legal and, where required, certified.

For most building work, the practical decision is:

  • Use C16 when the engineer’s design loads and spans allow it; the Forestry Commission describes C16 as suitable for most general construction framing.
  • Use C24 when the design requires greater strength or longer spans, or when a specification explicitly calls for it. Replacing C24 with C16 requires design approval.
  • Compare delivered prices for identical sections, grades, treatment and expected waste rather than comparing “imported” and “UK” labels.
  • Accept either origin when legality, chain of custody and lifecycle impacts are documented.

What actually determines timber strength?

Structural grading measures the piece, not its passport

Large sawmills mechanically assess stiffness and assign a structural class. Visual features such as knots, slope of grain, splits and other defects affect the result, as do species, density and moisture. A grade stamp or accompanying documentation is therefore more useful than a country-of-origin statement.

Two boards from the same forest can receive different grades. Conversely, timber from different countries can meet the same declared class and be designed using the same structural values. The engineer or building designer should work from the grade and design data shown on the material documentation.

C16 and C24 are strength classes

Declared class Use described by the Forestry Commission What it means when specifying
C16 Suitable for most general construction applications, including structural framing Can be the economical choice when calculated loads, spans and connections are within the class limits
C24 Used for roles requiring more strength or load bearing, including longer spans Specify when the design calls for the higher class; do not assume it is needed for every frame

C24 is commonly associated with imported construction timber because many merchants carry standard imported sections in that class. That availability should not be confused with a universal performance advantage. The government’s timber roadmap notes that familiarity with C24 can lead to overspecification when C16 would satisfy the design.

Never downgrade a specified grade without approval

If drawings, calculations or building-control information specify C24, ask the designer whether C16 is acceptable before ordering. A lower class can change permissible spans, joist spacing, load capacity and connection requirements. Conversely, buying C24 where C16 is adequate may increase cost without improving the completed structure in a useful way.

When timber arrives, check that the grade marking is legible and matches the delivery note. Record any boards with excessive distortion, splits, damage or unexpected moisture. Ask the supplier how the timber was graded and what moisture condition was assumed by the design.

Which option is cheaper?

There is no defensible universal import premium

A current price ratio for “imported” versus “UK-grown” timber would be misleading. Price changes with species, structural grade, section dimensions, kiln drying, treatment, certification, exchange rates, freight, merchant margin, order volume and the amount that must be discarded or cut off. The same origin can therefore be cheaper for one specification and dearer for another.

Obtain live quotations for matching material. A useful comparison states the delivered price and makes every allowance visible:

Cost item to match Question for the quotation
Species or species group Are both quotations for the same species or an approved equivalent?
Structural grade Are both C16, both C24, or otherwise the exact class required by the design?
Section and length Do widths, depths and stock lengths match, including any required long lengths?
Drying and moisture Is the timber kiln-dried or supplied at another moisture condition, and does that suit the installation?
Treatment Do both prices include the same preservative treatment and treatment documentation?
Certification Is the quoted certification included, and does it meet the client’s procurement requirement?
Delivery Are haulage, unloading, minimum order charges and the promised date included?
Wastage How much extra will be needed for defects, cutting, short lengths and damaged boards?

Calculate the delivered, usable cost

Start with the quantity of usable timber shown on the cutting list. Add a realistic allowance for offcuts and rejected pieces, then price the total delivered quantity. Imported stock may have a lower merchant price but a longer lead time or a section that creates more waste. Domestic stock may cost more per cubic metre yet reduce waiting, special-order charges or unusable offcuts. Those effects belong in the comparison.

For a fair tender, send every supplier the same schedule: species or approved alternative, C16 or C24 grade, exact dimensions and lengths, treatment, certification, delivery location and required date. Keep quotes dated because exchange rates, freight and stock levels can move quickly. The available evidence does not support claiming that either origin is generally cheaper.

Is UK-grown timber more sustainable?

Sustainability covers the whole life cycle

Local origin can shorten part of a supply chain and support domestic forestry, but it does not prove a lower whole-life carbon impact by itself. A sound assessment considers forest management, biodiversity, legality, harvesting, processing energy, transport, service life and what happens at end of use. An imported product from a well-managed certified forest may be a responsible choice; a UK-grown product without evidence of management or chain of custody should not receive an automatic environmental pass.

Look for documented legality and chain of custody

Forestry England says its forests are certified to FSC and PEFC standards. UK Timber Procurement Policy guidance recognises FSC, PEFC and Grown in Britain among routes for demonstrating legal and sustainable sourcing. Ask the merchant for the certificate or licence details relevant to the exact material, not a general statement that the company “uses sustainable timber.” Check that the paperwork covers the product, supplier and transaction.

  • Request FSC, PEFC, Grown in Britain or equivalent evidence where the project requires it.
  • Keep delivery notes, grade information and chain-of-custody records with the project file.
  • Treat carbon claims as lifecycle claims: ask what boundary, transport assumptions and product life the claim covers.
  • Do not infer environmental performance from “local” or “imported” alone.

Certification does not replace structural verification. A certified board still needs the correct grade, dimensions, treatment and moisture condition for the job.

How much timber does the UK import, and will I be able to get what I need?

The UK relies heavily on imports

Measure Figure and context Source and date
Share of timber used in the UK that is imported 80%; Forestry England describes the UK as second only to China for dependence on imported timber Forestry England, “We are for forestry,” 2026 page
UK apparent consumption of wood and wood products Approximately 48 million cubic metres in 2024; around 75–80% was imported Forestry Commission article, 2026
UK wood-product imports in 2024 6.3 million cubic metres of sawnwood, valued at £9.2 billion Forest Research, 2025

These figures explain why standard imported C24 sections can be easy to find through national merchants. They do not guarantee that a particular size, treatment or long length is in stock when you place an order.

Domestic supply is available but may need a different specification

Forestry England reports that it grows more than one million tonnes annually and sells FSC- and PEFC-certified timber through its eTimber platform. Other certified UK producers also supply homegrown material. Stock may be offered in species or dimensions less familiar to a merchant’s standard catalogue, and the available grade may be C16 rather than C24. A designer who accepts that specification early can access more domestic options.

What controls lead time?

Availability depends on species, grade, section size, treatment, sawmill capacity, importer inventories, exchange rates, ports and delivery capacity. A disruption at any point can change a quoted date. For a programme-critical order:

  1. Send the full specification to at least two suppliers and ask them to identify stock, production and delivery dates separately.
  2. Confirm whether the quoted material is physically allocated to your order or merely expected from a future shipment.
  3. Ask about acceptable substitutions, such as an approved domestic species or C16 grade, before a delay occurs.
  4. Check storage requirements and plan protected, level storage if timber will arrive before installation.

How to choose for a specific project

Choose the grade from the design first

Have the engineer or competent designer confirm the required grade, spans, loads, spacing and connections. If C16 meets those requirements, it may widen the available domestic supply and avoid paying for unused capacity. If C24 is required, retain that requirement and investigate both imported and UK sources that can document the class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the source after checking programme and waste

For a tight programme, a stocked product with a reliable delivery slot can be preferable to a nominally cheaper product requiring a special order. For a complex cut list, compare the usable yield and the lengths supplied, not only the price per cubic metre. Include any additional handling, storage and regrading cost caused by a late or inconsistent delivery.

Choose the evidence that matches the client’s policy

Public-sector or corporate procurement may require a named certification route. Agree the acceptable evidence before tendering. If the client wants homegrown timber, verify that the proposed material is genuinely UK-grown and that the stated certification covers it. If imported timber is acceptable, require equivalent legal and chain-of-custody documentation.

Buying and receiving checklist

  1. Define the schedule: list species or approved alternatives, C16 or C24 grade, cross-section, lengths, quantity, treatment and required date.
  2. Request documentation: ask for grade stamps or grading records, moisture information, treatment details and relevant FSC, PEFC, Grown in Britain or equivalent evidence.
  3. Obtain comparable quotes: require delivered prices, taxes or charges, unloading terms, lead time and the supplier’s assumptions about wastage.
  4. Confirm design compliance: have the designer approve any grade, species, section or treatment substitution in writing before dispatch.
  5. Inspect on arrival: check quantities, dimensions, markings, straightness, splits, damage and moisture condition against the order.
  6. Quarantine discrepancies: photograph non-conforming packs, record batch or delivery references and contact the supplier before cutting or installing them.
  7. Store correctly: keep packs level, supported and protected from ground contact and uncontrolled wetting, while allowing the condition specified by the design to be maintained.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“Imported means stronger”

Strength comes from the declared class and the characteristics measured during grading. Check C16 or C24 and the design data instead of relying on origin.

“UK-grown is automatically greener”

Domestic transport may be shorter, but sustainability also depends on forest management, biodiversity, processing, transport, service life and end-of-life treatment. Request evidence for the complete supply chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing unlike quotations

A C24, kiln-dried, treated, long-length quotation cannot be compared fairly with a C16, untreated, mixed-length quotation. Align the specification before judging the price.

Ordering on a verbal promise

Stock, ports, exchange rates and sawmill capacity can change. Put grade, dimensions, treatment, certification and delivery date on the purchase order and retain the supplier’s confirmation.

Changing grade after delivery

Do not install a lower-grade substitute because the correct material is late. Obtain design approval first; otherwise the completed frame may not meet its calculated capacity or building-control requirements.

Bottom line for contractors and self-builders

Neither imported nor UK-grown timber wins on every criterion. Specify the structural class and dimensions first, then compare documented, delivered and usable cost, lead time and certification. C16 will satisfy many construction applications, while C24 is justified where the design needs its higher strength or longer-span capability. A legal, certified supply chain and a verified grade matter more than the timber’s country of origin.
