Imported shower panels and pans are not automatically a bad choice, but a commercial project can be exposed to customs charges, port delays, damaged freight, inconsistent dimensions and difficult replacement logistics if those risks are not priced and controlled. The June 24, 2025 Building Design + Construction piece behind this topic is sponsored content from Mincey Marble, not an independent study of imported shower products. Its warnings should therefore be treated as procurement questions to verify—not as proof that every imported system will fail.

For multifamily, hospitality, senior-living, student-housing and other multi-unit work, choose on delivered project cost, confirmed dates, damage-and-replacement procedures, dimensional consistency, required volume, specifications and contract-specific warranty terms. A domestic supplier may simplify some of those items, while an import may still work when its schedule, quality controls and landed cost are documented.

What the sponsored article is—and is not

The source is a sponsored article published by Building Design + Construction on June 24, 2025. Mincey Marble uses it to promote American-made cast-marble shower panels and pans for contractors and multifamily developers. The article names shipping delays, tariffs, communication problems and inconsistent quality as reasons not to gamble on imports. Mincey’s own commercial page adds possible breakage, delayed work, weather exposure after premature delivery, port fees, panel-thickness differences, cracks, bowing, unfinished edges, shipping charges and duties.

Those are supplier claims and risk categories, not a market-wide failure rate. The pages reviewed do not establish how often any problem occurs among imported products, whether one country or factory is more affected than another, or whether domestic systems are cheaper after installation. No independent comparative study or named third-party statistic was identified. Treat the claims as a prompt for due diligence.

Where imported shower systems can affect a project

Schedule exposure

An overseas order has more handoffs than a local shipment: factory production, export booking, ocean or air transport, customs clearance, inland delivery and jobsite receiving. A missed sailing, inspection hold or congested port can move the delivery date even when the factory completed its work on time. If panels arrive before the building is ready, storing them outdoors or in an unprotected area can expose crates and finished edges to weather. If they arrive late, waterproofing, trim-out and unit turnover may all be resequenced.

Landed cost rather than catalog price

The relevant comparison is the cost delivered, inspected and usable at the project—not the factory or quoted unit price. Include freight, insurance, brokerage, port handling, duties, storage, equipment for unloading, inspection labor, replacement pieces and the cost of idle crews or resequencing. Tariffs and duty treatment can change by product classification, country of origin and policy date. Obtain a written landed-cost assumption and identify which party pays every charge.

Communication and documentation

Different time zones, terminology and approval practices can make a small dimensional change expensive. A purchase order should identify exact panel thickness, dimensions, color, texture, edge finish, drain location, tolerances, packaging, labeling and approved substitutions. Require shop drawings or production samples before releasing a large batch. Make the response deadline, escalation contact and language for nonconformance explicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Damage and replacement

Cast or stone-based pieces can be damaged by impact, poor bracing, moisture exposure or repeated handling. A replacement panel that must cross an ocean can extend a punch-list item into a turnover problem. Define who photographs damage, who files the freight claim, how quickly a replacement is manufactured, whether expedited freight is available and who pays labor to remove and reinstall a defective piece.

Dimensional and finish variation

The sponsor warns that imported panels may differ in thickness or arrive with cracks, bowing or unfinished edges. Such conditions are not established as universal import characteristics, but they are reasonable inspection points for any supplier. Confirm allowable tolerances, flatness, edge treatment, color consistency between lots and the procedure for rejecting nonconforming material before installation.

Who the product described by Mincey is intended for

Mincey says its panels and pans are commercial products for hospitality, multifamily, senior living, military housing and student housing. It states that products are made to order for specific jobs, shipped directly to project sites and sold in truckload quantities. Its FAQ says the company does not sell to homeowners or independent residential customers. That means a typical homeowner shopping for one shower kit is outside the stated sales model; the relevant buyer is a developer, general contractor, purchasing group or specialty installer managing repeated units.

How the cast-marble systems are described

Material and manufacturing

Mincey says it manufactures cast-marble products in Gainesville, Georgia. The company describes the material as locally sourced ground marble, pigment and polyester resin poured into molds made at its facility. Its FAQ says the marble comes from North Georgia and the resin from the Gulf Coast. These are company statements, not independently audited supply-chain findings, so place them in your specification record as manufacturer representations.

Panels, pans and finish claims

The supplier describes its cast-marble panels and pans as nonporous and groutless. Its shower-pan page describes solid pans made from crushed stone and resin with a built-in slope. “Nonporous,” “groutless” and “built-in slope” are manufacturer descriptions, not an independent performance comparison with every imported system. Ask for the applicable technical data, installation limits, cleaning instructions, slip-resistance information if required by the project and the standard used for any stated performance.

Custom dimensions and drains

The catalog indicates options such as custom pan dimensions and drain locations. Put those dimensions on an approved drawing, not only in an email or verbal conversation. Coordinate the drain with structural framing, plumbing rough-in, waterproofing details, finished wall thickness and accessibility requirements. A custom pan is useful only when the final field dimensions and tolerance are controlled.

Plan receiving, storage and movement before ordering

Mincey’s FAQ says shipments arrive on flatbed trucks in wood crates and that a forklift with six-foot forks is needed to move the crates. Confirm the truck route, unloading area, turning radius, ground conditions, forklift capacity and operator availability before the dispatch date. A site that cannot accept a flatbed or safely move a crate may incur redelivery, storage or damage costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Map the release schedule. Divide the order by building, floor or unit group so material arrives when waterproofing and framing are ready. Do not accept an early shipment merely because it is available unless protected storage is documented.
  2. Prepare the receiving plan. Name the receiver, inspection location and equipment. Keep crates level, protected from weather and accessible for counting and inspection.
  3. Inspect before signing. Photograph crate condition, labels, visible impact, moisture and missing pieces. Note exceptions on the delivery record and notify the supplier and carrier within the contract’s required period.
  4. Quarantine questionable pieces. Do not install a cracked, bowed, incorrectly sized or unfinished panel while waiting for an answer. Tag it with the unit and location, preserve packaging and request a written disposition.
  5. Track replacements separately. Record the promised manufacturing date, shipping method, tracking details and labor responsibility for each replacement.

Use a delivered-cost and capability comparison

Ask every candidate—domestic or imported—for the same information. The table below turns the sponsor’s warnings into comparable procurement evidence.

Decision factor What to request Why it matters
Delivered cost Unit price, freight, insurance, brokerage, duties, port fees, storage and unloading assumptions Reveals the project’s actual landed exposure
Schedule Production slot, release dates, transit time, customs allowance and latest safe delivery date Connects supply promises to turnover milestones
Damage handling Inspection window, photographs required, claim ownership, replacement lead time and expedited options Limits the impact of a damaged panel or pan
Dimensional quality Thickness, size, flatness, edge finish, color consistency and allowable tolerances Prevents field-fitting and visible variation
Volume and customization Minimum order, truckload quantity, custom pan sizes, drain locations and approved substitutions Confirms the supplier can serve the actual project
Warranty Written coverage, exclusions, duration, authorized modifications and labor responsibility Prevents a sales promise from replacing contract language
Site logistics Truck type, crate dimensions, forklift requirements, storage limits and delivery appointments Reduces redelivery and handling damage

A practical procurement workflow

1. Freeze the design basis

Issue a schedule listing each unit type, panel layout, pan dimensions, drain location, finish, edge condition and accessories. Mark accessibility or code-driven dimensions. Have plumbing, waterproofing and framing trades review the same document.

2. Request a project-specific quotation

Ask for quantities by release, manufacturing location, Incoterms or delivery responsibility, freight assumptions, validity period, taxes or duties, packaging and site requirements. If a supplier advertises short lead times, request the actual production and delivery dates for your quantities.

4. Validate capacity and references

Ask how many units can be produced per release, how changes are handled after approval and how replacement pieces are prioritized. Request project references with similar volume and schedule, while recognizing that a reference is not an independent performance audit.

5. Lock commercial terms

Put dates, quantities, tolerances, inspection rights, damage procedures, title and risk of loss, cancellation rules, change-order pricing and warranty language in the contract. State whether labor, removal and reinstallation are recoverable when a product is defective.

6. Coordinate delivery with the look-ahead schedule

Set delivery appointments against verified site readiness. Reconfirm access, forklift, storage and weather protection shortly before dispatch. Use staged releases when the building cannot protect a full truckload.

How to read Mincey’s breakage figure

Mincey reports a 0.16% breakage rate since 2021. That is the company’s own figure for the period beginning in 2021; the cited material does not provide an independent audit, the denominator, the definition of breakage or a directly comparable rate for imported products. It should not be converted into a promise that the company’s products are categorically safer or less expensive.

Ask what the rate includes: damage during manufacturing, loading, transit, unloading or installation; whole units or individual pieces; and confirmed breakage versus claims submitted. Request the supplier’s current claims process and project-specific service-level commitments rather than relying on a headline percentage.

Warranty and contract questions

Mincey states that warranty coverage follows the specific contract documents and authorized modifications. Obtain those documents before approval and check whether installation by an unauthorized party, field cutting, non-approved adhesives, drain changes, cleaning chemicals or other alterations affect coverage. Confirm whether the warranty covers only replacement material or also freight, removal, labor and consequential schedule costs.

  • What defects qualify, and what evidence must be submitted?
  • How many days does the buyer have to report concealed or visible damage?
  • Who owns freight claims and replacement transportation?
  • What is the promised response and replacement date?
  • Are custom dimensions and authorized field modifications covered?
  • Which care and installation instructions become contract requirements?

When a domestic source may fit—and when an import may still work

Project condition Questions to answer Decision implication
Very tight turnover date Is there a firm production slot, transit allowance and replacement plan? Favor the source with the most credible complete schedule, not simply the shortest quoted lead time
Large repeated unit count Can the supplier sustain releases, matching finishes and truckload logistics? Capacity and consistency may matter more than initial unit price
Remote or constrained jobsite Can the site receive the truck, unload crates and protect inventory? Delivery equipment and storage can outweigh geographic distance
Highly customized layouts Are drawings, tolerances and change controls documented? Choose the supplier that can prove dimensional control and replacement capability
Strong price advantage from importing Does the advantage survive freight, duty, inspection, damage and schedule allowances? Use a landed-cost model before approving the order

Mincey presents domestic production, direct jobsite shipping, customer service, lower shipping costs, duty-free supply, shorter lead times and low breakage as advantages. Verify each one for your location, quantity, release plan and contract; the reviewed material does not quantify savings or delivery performance against imports.

Commercial buyer’s final checklist

  • Confirm the product is sold in the required quantity and release pattern.
  • Obtain approved drawings for every panel, pan and drain location.
  • Compare total delivered cost, not factory price.
  • Document production, transit, customs and replacement dates.
  • Define inspection, rejection, freight-claim and replacement procedures.
  • Verify thickness, flatness, edge finish, color consistency and tolerances.
  • Plan flatbed access, six-foot forklift forks, weather protection and secure storage where applicable.
  • Read the project-specific warranty and authorized-modification clauses.
  • Keep photographs, crate labels, inspection reports and correspondence.

The sound decision is not “imports are always risky” or “domestic is always better.” It is a documented comparison of schedule certainty, landed cost, quality controls, logistics, damage recovery and warranty obligations for the exact commercial project. Mincey’s Gainesville, Georgia operation is one manufacturer’s stated approach; its claims and reported 0.16% breakage figure should be weighed alongside equivalent written evidence from any competing supplier.
