No—IKEA is not requiring customers to replace all Zigbee smart-home products in 2026. The company is moving new product development toward Matter, with many new devices using Matter over Thread. Existing TRÅDFRI and other IKEA Zigbee products continue to work through the DIRIGERA hub, which can also bridge supported legacy devices into Matter-compatible ecosystems.
The practical change is a transition between product generations, not a blanket Zigbee shutdown.

The short answer
- New IKEA products: increasingly use Matter, often Matter over Thread.
- Existing Zigbee products: continue to work with DIRIGERA and the IKEA Home Smart app.
- Replacement deadline: IKEA’s public support information does not establish a universal 2026 date when Zigbee products stop working.
- DIRIGERA: acts as a Matter controller and can bridge supported Zigbee products into Matter ecosystems.
An older bulb may disappear from IKEA stores because it has been replaced by a newer model, but that is not the same as the device becoming unusable in an existing installation.

Zigbee, Thread and Matter are not the same thing
Reports about IKEA “replacing Zigbee with Matter” often blur together different parts of the technology stack.
- Zigbee is a wireless, low-power smart-home networking protocol used by IKEA’s older products.
- Thread is a low-power IPv6 mesh networking technology used by many newer devices.
- Matter is an application and interoperability standard designed to let compatible products work across supported smart-home ecosystems.
- Matter over Thread means that Matter messages travel over a Thread network.
- Matter controller is the controller or hub that commissions and manages Matter devices.
- Thread Border Router connects a Thread mesh to the home’s IP network.
- Matter bridge exposes devices using another protocol—such as Zigbee—to a Matter ecosystem.
Matter is therefore not a direct radio replacement for Zigbee. In IKEA’s transition, the usual pattern is older Zigbee hardware managed by DIRIGERA, alongside newer Matter-over-Thread hardware.

A legacy bulb bridged through DIRIGERA remains a Zigbee device at the hardware level. A new KAJPLATS bulb using Matter over Thread is a native Matter device. The two may appear together in an app, but their networking, commissioning and troubleshooting are different.

Do existing TRÅDFRI and other Zigbee products need replacing?
Not merely because IKEA is launching Matter products. Working IKEA Zigbee bulbs, plugs, blinds, remotes and sensors can continue operating through DIRIGERA. They can also be exposed to supported Matter ecosystems through DIRIGERA’s bridge function.
However, bridging does not guarantee that every native IKEA feature appears identically in every third-party platform. The exposed controls can vary by device category, ecosystem and firmware version. Lighting, plugs, blinds, motion sensors, contact sensors, temperature sensors, air-quality products and remotes should not be assumed to have identical capabilities everywhere.
IKEA’s software information shows that Matter Bridge support is being expanded by device type over time; see the company’s DIRIGERA software page for current information.
What happens to the TRÅDFRI gateway?
The older TRÅDFRI gateway is not the same product as DIRIGERA. Readers should not assume that a software update turns the TRÅDFRI gateway into a full Matter controller, Thread Border Router or Matter bridge.
If you still use the TRÅDFRI gateway and want to add IKEA’s newer Matter products, DIRIGERA is the relevant upgrade path. IKEA’s current materials position DIRIGERA as the hub for combining older IKEA products with new Matter devices.

Migration may involve more than moving hardware. IKEA’s DIRIGERA FAQ warns that scenes may need to be recreated after moving from the TRÅDFRI gateway. Do not assume that every room, scene, automation and integration will transfer with one click.

There are two different answers depending on how you plan to use the device.
For basic Matter control
DIRIGERA may not be required if your existing smart-home platform provides a compatible Matter controller and, for a Matter-over-Thread product, Thread Border Router functionality. IKEA identifies Apple, Google, Amazon, Homey and Samsung among compatible smart-home systems.
For the IKEA Home Smart app and mixed generations
DIRIGERA is the recommended choice if you want the IKEA Home Smart app, IKEA-specific management, or one system for both legacy Zigbee products and newer Matter devices. It can function as a Matter controller, Matter bridge and Thread Border Router.
| Use case | Is DIRIGERA needed? |
|---|---|
| Control a new Matter device in an existing compatible ecosystem | Not necessarily, if that ecosystem supplies the required controller and Thread infrastructure. |
| Use the IKEA Home Smart app | Recommended and often practically necessary. |
| Mix new Matter products with older IKEA Zigbee products | Recommended. |
| Bridge older Zigbee products into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or another Matter system | Required as the bridge for those IKEA devices. |
| Use IKEA’s complete rooms, scenes and routines | Recommended; verify feature support for the specific product. |
The Matter logo does not automatically mean “hub-free.” A Matter-over-Thread product still needs a Matter controller and Thread network support.

What hardware do you need?
Existing IKEA owner with Zigbee products
The most straightforward setup is:
- DIRIGERA hub
- IKEA Home Smart app
- Your existing IKEA Zigbee products
- Optional new Matter-over-Thread devices
You generally do not need to replace working Zigbee hardware simply because new products use Matter.
New IKEA buyer
- IKEA-centered home: choose DIRIGERA with IKEA Matter products.
- Existing Apple, Google, Alexa or Samsung home: check that your controller supports the product’s Matter transport, especially Thread.
- No hub or controller: a remote-controlled bulb or starter kit may provide basic local control, but app control, automations and ecosystem integration require appropriate infrastructure.
Product pages such as IKEA’s TIMMERFLOTTE listing state the Thread Border Router requirement for Matter-over-Thread use.

Common compatibility traps
“Matter-compatible” does not mean every feature works everywhere
Matter improves interoperability, but Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, Samsung, Homey and Home Assistant may expose different controls or automation options. “Compatible with” should not be read as “feature-identical across every platform.”
A bridge does not turn Zigbee into Thread
DIRIGERA can present supported Zigbee products through Matter, but it does not change their radios or make them native Matter-over-Thread devices. Commissioning, firmware updates, network paths and available controls can differ.
Thread problems can look like Wi-Fi problems
If commissioning fails despite a working Wi-Fi network, check:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Thread Border Router availability
- IPv6 support
- Local-network isolation
- Multicast and mDNS behavior
- Phone permissions
- Duplicate or stale Matter fabric records
- Distance from the device to the Thread Border Router
- Firmware and app versions
These are general Matter and Thread setup dependencies, not evidence that a particular IKEA device is defective.
Low prices may exclude batteries
Some sensors and remotes require separately purchased batteries. Include that cost when comparing IKEA’s total setup price with alternatives.
Should you buy IKEA smart-home products in 2026?
- Buy now if you already use DIRIGERA: new Matter products can expand the system without discarding working Zigbee devices.
- Buy now if you have Matter and Thread infrastructure: IKEA’s low-cost bulbs, sensors, plugs and remotes may be attractive additions.
- Choose DIRIGERA if you have a TRÅDFRI gateway: it is the practical route to newer IKEA products and legacy-device bridging, but budget time to rebuild scenes.
- Verify before buying if you want advanced automations: check whether the exact device category and required controls are supported in your chosen ecosystem.
- Wait or check local availability for a large installation: IKEA is rolling out products in stages, and the lineup differs by country.
- Avoid DIRIGERA only if you already have a complete Matter/Thread setup and do not need the IKEA app or legacy Zigbee bridge.
For Apple Home users, verify the required Apple home hub and Thread support; Apple’s current platform information is available through the Home app page. Google, Alexa and Samsung users should likewise confirm support for their specific controller rather than relying only on the Matter label.
Bottom line
IKEA is changing the direction of its smart-home product range, not imposing a universal 2026 replacement program. New products are increasingly Matter-compatible and many use Matter over Thread, while existing Zigbee products remain usable through DIRIGERA. For most existing IKEA owners, the sensible approach is to keep working devices, use DIRIGERA when mixing generations or bridging to another ecosystem, and check the controller, Thread and feature requirements before buying new products.
