How to Winterize Construction Equipment Before Freezing Temperatures

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Winterize each machine before the forecast reaches 32°F (0°C), using that machine’s operator and maintenance manual as the controlling specification. Inspect and service the cooling, fuel, lubrication, battery, starting, exhaust, tires, brakes, visibility and emissions systems; then store the equipment under cover when possible. The objective is to prevent coolant damage, fuel-filter blockage, slow cranking, hydraulic starvation and unsafe operation—not merely to get an engine started.

Start with the machine manual and a temperature plan

Construction equipment does not have one universal winterization recipe. Engine coolant chemistry, oil viscosity, hydraulic-fluid grade, fuel requirements, battery voltage and heater design vary by model and engine. Read the exact operator, maintenance and engine manuals before buying fluids, treatments or heaters. If the manual and a generic product label conflict, follow the manual and confirm the choice with the equipment dealer or engine manufacturer.

Set the design temperature

Base your preparation on the lowest temperature the machine is expected to experience while parked, starting and working. Include wind exposure, overnight temperatures, the temperature of stored fuel and the time needed for fluids to circulate. A machine that starts at 20°F may still require a different oil or fuel grade if it will be left outside at -10°F.

Make maintenance traceable

Record the date, hour-meter reading, coolant test result, fluid grades, filter changes, battery condition and heater inspection. OSHA’s maintenance guidance says employers should implement an effective maintenance program for vehicles and mechanized equipment and check the cooling system, battery, engine, exhaust, tires, oil and visibility systems. A written record helps a supervisor verify that a rental, shared machine or backup unit received the same preparation as the primary fleet.

Inspect the systems that cold weather affects first

System Pre-freeze inspection Cold-weather risk controlled
Cooling Measure freeze protection with a hydrometer; inspect hoses, clamps, radiator, cap and leaks. Frozen coolant, cracked components and overheating after a weak mixture freezes.
Diesel fuel Confirm the approved winter fuel grade, drain the water separator and inspect or replace the fuel filter. Wax gelling, ice in the filter and fuel starvation.
Engine and driveline oils Install the manual-specified engine-oil, hydraulic, transmission and final-drive grades. Slow circulation, high starting load and lubrication failure.
Battery and starting Fully charge batteries, clean and tighten terminals, inspect cables and test approved heaters. Low cranking power, voltage drop and repeated failed starts.
Exhaust and intake Check the exhaust, intake, pre-cleaner and air filter for damage, ice, snow or blockage. Carbon-monoxide exposure, restricted airflow and poor combustion.
Tires, tracks and brakes Check pressure, tread or track condition, parking brake and service-brake operation. Loss of traction, frozen components and unsafe movement.
Visibility and controls Clear glazing, mirrors, cameras, lights, steps and handholds; test wipers and washers. Falls, collisions and operation with an obstructed view.
DEF system Protect bulk fluid from freezing and verify the machine’s tank and heater operate as designed. Crystallization, dosing faults and damaged storage containers.

Protect the cooling system

Test the actual freeze point

Use a coolant hydrometer before temperatures fall and during the season if coolant has been added or diluted. A hydrometer check reveals inadequate freeze protection before a freeze can split a radiator, hose, water pump or engine passage. Caterpillar’s current checklist states that a general 50/50 coolant-water mixture is suitable to -37°F (-38°C). That figure is a general reference, not permission to use any coolant in any engine: the coolant type, additive package, water quality and mixture must match the engine and cooling-system specification.

Correct weak or contaminated coolant safely

  1. Allow the engine to cool completely and relieve pressure according to the manual.
  2. Sample coolant from the specified location rather than from a surface reservoir that may not represent the system.
  3. Compare the hydrometer result with the lowest expected temperature and the manual’s permitted range.
  4. If protection is inadequate, drain and refill with the approved premix or concentrate-and-water combination. Do not improvise the ratio.
  5. Inspect for leaks, soft hoses, damaged clamps, a faulty pressure cap and plugged radiator fins before returning the machine to service.

Never top up with plain water when freezing is possible. If an emergency addition is unavoidable, correct the mixture as soon as the machine can be serviced and document what was added.

Prepare diesel fuel and filters for cold weather

Use the specified fuel, not an improvised blend

Confirm the fuel grade or seasonal blend specified for the machine and the expected temperature. Ask the fuel supplier for the applicable cold-filter-plugging or cloud-point information when the manual requires it. Do not add gasoline or another unapproved fuel to diesel; Caterpillar specifically warns against that practice because it can damage the fuel system and create a serious safety hazard. Use a fuel treatment only when the engine or fuel-system manufacturer approves that product and dosage.

Remove water before it becomes ice

  1. At the end of the workday, park safely and shut the engine down using the normal procedure.
  2. Drain the water separator into an approved container until clean fuel appears, following the manual’s instructions.
  3. Dispose of the drained liquid according to the site’s environmental and waste rules.
  4. Fill the tank with the approved fuel before the machine is parked overnight. A fuller tank leaves less humid air space and reduces condensation.
  5. Inspect the cap, seal and filler neck so snow and water cannot enter.

Water can freeze in a separator or filter and stop fuel flow even when the fuel itself has not gelled. Replace the fuel filter before winter if its service interval is due, and keep at least one exact-model replacement filter on site. Never use an open flame, torch or other uncontrolled heat source to thaw a filter. Move the machine to a safe heated area or use equipment approved by the manufacturer.

Choose cold-weather engine and hydraulic fluids by specification

Cold thickens engine oil, hydraulic oil, transmission oil and final-drive lubricant. A thick fluid increases starter load and can starve pumps and bearings until it warms. Install the viscosity grade and performance category listed for the machine and the expected ambient range; do not choose solely by a familiar brand or by the oil used in summer.

Service procedure

  1. Check the manual for the required viscosity at the expected temperature and for any permitted alternatives.
  2. Inspect the level and condition of engine, hydraulic, transmission and final-drive fluids for water, metal, cloudiness or a burnt smell.
  3. Change fluids and filters at the prescribed interval, preferably before the first severe cold period.
  4. Use clean, sealed containers and prevent dirt or snow from entering filler necks.
  5. Do not dilute oil with diesel, kerosene or another solvent, and do not add an unapproved additive. An apparent short-term reduction in viscosity can destroy the lubricant’s protective properties.

After servicing, operate the machine without a heavy load long enough for the fluids to reach the manufacturer’s operating range. A cold hydraulic system can respond slowly and unpredictably; test all functions at low speed before lifting, digging or traveling.

Make batteries, heaters and starting procedures work together

Restore battery capacity before the cold arrives

Cold reduces a battery’s available cranking performance while a cold engine demands more torque. Fully charge each battery, clean corrosion from terminals, tighten connections and inspect cables for stiff insulation, swelling or damaged lugs. Check electrolyte level only on battery types that permit it, and follow the battery maker’s procedure. A battery that repeatedly fails a load or conductance test should be replaced rather than carried into winter as a spare.

Install only approved warming equipment

Where the manual permits it, use a battery warmer and an approved block, coolant or engine-oil heater. Match the heater to the machine’s voltage, mounting location and electrical supply. Check cords, plugs, strain relief, grounding and weather protection; route cables away from hot, sharp or moving parts. A heater’s electrical draw matters on remote sites, so verify that the generator, shore connection or timer can supply it without overloading a circuit. Do not cover an engine with combustible material or use an improvised heat source.

Start and warm the machine without damaging it

  1. Clear ice and snow from the intake, exhaust, steps, controls and work area.
  2. Turn off unnecessary electrical loads and follow the manual’s preheat or glow-plug cycle.
  3. Crank only for the period allowed by the manufacturer. Caterpillar’s current checklist limits a cranking attempt to 30 seconds, followed by enough time for starter components to cool.
  4. If the engine does not start, stop and diagnose fuel, battery, preheat and air-supply problems instead of repeating long cranking cycles.
  5. Once running, allow the engine to warm for several minutes. Caterpillar winter guidance calls for at least five minutes before work; the exact time and temperature range in the machine manual controls.
  6. Cycle hydraulic, steering and implement functions gently at low speed so engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant and DEF reach operating temperature before full load.

Do not use starting fluid unless the engine has a factory-installed automatic starting-fluid system. Caterpillar warns that improper use can cause catastrophic engine failure and injury. Never spray ether into an engine equipped with glow plugs or an intake heater unless the manufacturer explicitly provides that procedure.

Handle diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) correctly

DEF is 67.5% water, so bulk DEF must be protected from freezing during storage and transport. Keep drums, totes and transfer equipment in the temperature range specified by the DEF supplier and prevent contamination with diesel, oil, dirt or ordinary containers.

Machine-mounted DEF tanks are different from bulk storage. Caterpillar states that the tank and lines are designed to freeze and thaw, with heaters helping the system return to operation as the machine warms. Perkins describes the same distinction: protect stored DEF, but allow the machine’s engineered heating and thawing cycle to work. Do not drain a machine tank merely because freezing is forecast unless the manual instructs you to do so, and do not add antifreeze or another chemical to DEF.

Shut down and store equipment for freezing conditions

End-of-shift procedure

  1. Park on stable ground away from drainage paths, falling snow and traffic.
  2. Lower buckets, blades, forks and other attachments to the ground; relieve hydraulic pressure as the manual directs.
  3. Fill the diesel tank with approved fuel, drain the water separator and verify that the coolant has adequate freeze protection.
  4. Remove packed snow and ice from tracks, tires, steps, radiators, vents, exhaust outlets and access doors.
  5. Perform the normal cool-down and shutdown sequence. Do not stop a turbocharged engine immediately after a heavy load unless the manual permits it.
  6. Disconnect or secure external heater leads as specified, and inspect for damaged cords before the next use.

Use shelter and moisture control

Park equipment in a sheltered location whenever possible, as Perkins recommends. A roof and wind protection reduce snow loading, ice formation and overnight heat loss, but ventilation is still required for any running engine or fuel-burning heater. Never operate an engine or heater in an enclosed space without the ventilation and carbon-monoxide controls required by the manufacturer and site rules.

Diagnose common cold-weather failures

Symptom Likely cold-weather causes Safe response
Starter turns slowly or clicks Discharged battery, corroded connection, oil too thick or a failing starter. Stop repeated cranking; inspect and charge the battery, connections and approved heater, then follow the starting test in the manual.
Engine cranks but will not fire Fuel filter restriction, water frozen in the separator, inadequate preheat or fuel below the required winter grade. Check warning indicators and separator; warm the machine safely, replace the filter if required and verify preheat. Do not use an open flame or unapproved starting fluid.
Engine starts and dies Ice or wax restricting fuel flow, air entering the fuel system or a blocked vent. Park safely, inspect the filter and fuel supply, and have the system serviced rather than repeatedly restarting.
Hydraulic functions are slow or jerky Cold hydraulic oil, restricted suction, low level or ice around controls and linkages. Warm at low idle and cycle functions gradually; stop if noise, cavitation or warning lights appear.
Coolant warning or visible leak Inadequate mixture, frozen passages, split hose or failed cap. Shut down, keep clear of pressurized coolant and have the system inspected after it cools.
DEF warning after a freeze Normal thaw delay, low level, contamination or a heater/dosing fault. Allow the machine’s designed thaw cycle, then follow the diagnostic code procedure; never dilute DEF with water or antifreeze.

Compare heaters and winter products by fit, not advertising

When selecting a hydrometer, battery warmer, block heater, oil-pan heater or replacement fuel filter, compare the factors that determine whether it is safe and useful on the specific machine:

  • Temperature rating: the minimum ambient temperature and the time required to bring the relevant fluid to a usable temperature.
  • Compatibility: engine model, coolant chemistry, oil-pan or block design, battery voltage, connector type and exact filter part number.
  • Manufacturer approval: installation and operation instructions from the equipment or engine manufacturer.
  • Fire and electrical safety: enclosure rating, grounding, cord condition, clearance from fuel and hot surfaces, and protection from water.
  • Electrical draw: the watts or amps required and whether the jobsite supply, generator or timer can support it.
  • Serviceability: access for inspection, replacement and cleaning without defeating guards or creating new leak points.
  • Total cost of ownership: purchase, installation, electricity, replacement parts, inspection time and the cost of a failed start or damaged component.

There are no universal service intervals or fluid specifications across construction equipment. A product that is correct for one engine, voltage or coolant chemistry can be unsafe in another. Confirm the part and installation with the manual and, when uncertain, a qualified dealer technician.
