Yes, a doorway or other opening in a load-bearing wall can usually be enlarged, but it is a structural alteration—not ordinary demolition. The new opening needs a designed header, adequate jack and king studs (or another engineered support), a continuous load path into the structure below, permits, and inspections. There is no safe universal header size or one-size-fits-all ceiling-shoring arrangement: span, loads, framing direction, stories, materials, and foundation conditions determine the design.
Why enlarging the opening changes the structure
A bearing wall carries loads from the roof, ceiling, floors, and sometimes walls above. Those forces normally travel through closely spaced studs. When you remove studs to make a wider doorway, the load must be redirected around the opening.

The replacement header spans the rough opening. Its ends deliver concentrated reactions into vertical supports, commonly jack studs beside the opening backed by full-height king studs. Those supports then transfer the forces to the remaining wall, floor framing, beams, posts, or foundation below. A federal residential structural-design guide describes header design as similar to girder design and identifies jack and king studs as the header supports. The header therefore cannot be selected by width alone.
The wall may also perform other jobs. It could be an exterior wall, a fire-rated separation, a shear or braced wall, or the location of a plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or gas run. A wider opening can affect those functions even when the header itself is strong enough.

First determine what the wall is doing
Confirm the bearing condition
Look at the framing above and below, not just the wall surface. Joists or rafters that terminate on, overlap above, or change direction at the wall are clues that it carries load. Posts, beams, doubled studs, or a basement beam directly below can indicate a concentrated reaction. These clues are not a substitute for an inspection of the actual structure.
If you cannot establish whether the wall is bearing or fire-rated, use the standard permit-review route rather than assuming a minor-work exemption. Pittsburgh’s permit guidance specifically directs applicants to standard review when they are unsure about a wall’s load-bearing or fire-rated status.
Check for point loads and lateral functions
- A post, beam end, girder, truss, or upper-story wall may impose a point load near the proposed opening.
- An exterior wall may need a weatherproofing, insulation, and flashing detail in addition to structural work.
- A shear or braced wall may require a designed replacement segment, hold-downs, or other lateral-resistance measures.
- A fire-rated wall may require rated framing, doors, penetrations, and finishes that cannot simply be cut away.
- Utilities may need to be rerouted and protected before demolition.
Permits are normally required for a wider bearing-wall opening
Permit rules are set by the jurisdiction and adopted code, so verify them with the building department before cutting. Several official examples show why a routine-repair assumption is risky:

|---|---|---|
| Pennsylvania, 34 Pa. Code § 403.62(d)(1) | The ordinary-repair exclusion does not cover “Cutting away a load-bearing wall, partition or portion of a wall.” | Removing part of a bearing wall is not treated as a simple repair under this provision. |
| Fairfax | Modifying a load-bearing wall and changing a door or window opening size are listed as permit work. | A wider doorway should be submitted through the applicable structural-remodel process. |
| Bellevue | Enlarged openings and doorway headers appear in structural-remodel permit examples. | Expect structural information in the permit application. |
| Pittsburgh EZ permit pilot | The expedited route excludes structural headers and load-bearing-wall changes. | Do not select an expedited form unless the local authority confirms that your scope qualifies. |
These are U.S. examples, not a nationwide rule. Ask your local authority which permit type, plan review, contractor licensing, inspections, and fees apply to your property. Confirm the required inspection stages before work starts; structural framing generally must remain visible until the inspector has approved it.
What the designer needs before sizing a header
A structural engineer or other professional authorized by your jurisdiction must evaluate the actual load path. Provide a clear description of the proposed opening and as much site information as you can gather:
- Existing wall location, length, thickness, and whether it is exterior.
- Desired rough-opening width and height, including any required clearances.
- Number of stories and what rooms, walls, beams, or roof members are above.
- Joist and rafter direction, spans, and bearing points.
- Visible posts, beams, trusses, doubled studs, or other concentrated loads.
- Framing material and dimensions, if known, plus the floor or foundation directly below.
- Basement, crawlspace, slab, or beam layout under each proposed header support.
- Utilities, ducts, sprinklers, and any fire or acoustic rating.
- Photos or drawings showing both sides of the wall and the framing that becomes visible after limited exploratory openings.
Guilford County’s published guidance illustrates the level of precision that may be requested: header dimensions and material properties, jack- and king-stud counts, beam details, and information showing how point loads reach the foundation. Where engineered elements are used, that guidance calls for the design and sealed plans to be available on site at the first inspection. Your jurisdiction may ask for different documents.

How a header and its supports are designed
Span and loads
The header must resist bending and shear over the clear span while limiting deflection that could crack finishes or bind the door. The calculation considers the tributary roof, ceiling, and floor area; snow, wind, or other jurisdictional loads; the number of floors; and any point load. A short opening under a light attic is not equivalent to a wide opening under a second-floor beam.
Bearing and end supports
Each end reaction must be transferred through enough jack studs and king studs, with adequate bearing length and connections. The support below must also resist the concentrated force without crushing, bending, or punching through a joist, rim board, beam, slab, or footing. If the proposed support lands between members, the design may require a new post, beam, blocking, or footing.
Material and connection choices
Designers may specify built-up dimensional lumber, laminated veneer lumber, steel, or another approved system. Material strength, moisture exposure, fasteners, splice locations, and installation tolerances are part of the design. Do not substitute a different product because it appears to have the same nominal dimensions.

Lateral and fire requirements
If the wall contributes to wind or earthquake resistance, the opening may need a lateral-design detail in addition to gravity-load framing. If it is fire-rated, the permit drawings should identify the rated assembly and approved penetrations. The header calculation alone does not resolve either issue.
Temporary support while the wall section is removed
Ceiling and floor loads remain in place while the original studs are being cut. A temporary support system must carry those loads through a safe path to the foundation or another verified bearing element. The correct arrangement depends on framing direction, story height, access, existing damage, and the capacity of the floor and foundation.

Adjustable posts or a temporary beam can be dangerously overloaded or placed on a weak floor if they are chosen by rule of thumb. Have the engineer or qualified builder specify the temporary works and inspect the bearing surfaces.

- Document the existing structure. Identify framing direction, point loads, utilities, and the surfaces that can receive temporary reactions.
- Obtain the temporary-support design. The design should state the temporary beam or wall, post locations, bases, connections, allowable adjustment, and removal sequence.
- Install support before removing load-bearing members. Set it on verified bearing, use the specified spreaders or blocking, and avoid lifting the structure beyond the design intent.
- Remove the wall in controlled stages. Follow the approved demolition sequence; stop if movement, cracking, unexpected framing, or utility damage appears.
- Install permanent framing and verify bearing. Fit the header, jack and king studs, posts, fasteners, and any blocking exactly as detailed.
- Request the required inspection before concealment. Keep structural members and connections visible until the authority approves them, then remove temporary supports only as directed.
If the ceiling moves, doors suddenly bind, drywall cracks rapidly, a post shifts, or a temporary support bears unevenly, stop work, keep people out of the affected area, and call the responsible professional or building official. Do not compensate by tightening posts or adding random shims.

- Define the opening. Record the desired rough width and height, finished-door requirements, and whether the opening is for a doorway, cased opening, or larger passage.
- Identify the jurisdiction. Contact the building department and ask specifically about enlarging an opening in a potentially load-bearing or fire-rated wall.
- Gather site facts. Photograph both sides, map floors and foundation below, note joist and rafter direction, and mark utilities and visible point loads.
- Confirm design responsibility. Ask whether plans must be prepared or sealed by a licensed structural engineer or another authorized design professional. Fairfax points applicants to the applicable Virginia code, while Guilford describes when engineered information and sealed plans are expected.
- Commission the structural design. Have the professional evaluate the header, end supports, bearing below, connections, lateral effects, fire requirements, and temporary support.
- Submit the complete permit package. Include the structural drawings, calculations or notes required locally, architectural dimensions, and any special inspection documentation.
- Coordinate the work. Arrange utility shutdowns or relocations, protect occupied areas, and schedule inspections before framing is covered.
- Build to the approved documents. Do not widen the opening, remove additional studs, change materials, or relocate supports without written approval from the designer and authority having jurisdiction.
Choosing an approval and design route
| Decision | When it may apply | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Standard permit review | Structural, fire-rated, uncertain, or otherwise complex wall conditions. | Required drawings, calculations, inspections, and professional credentials. |
| Expedited or minor-work route | Only when the local authority expressly accepts the exact scope. | Whether headers, bearing-wall changes, and enlarged openings are excluded; Pittsburgh’s EZ pilot excludes them. |
| Prescriptive code detail | Some jurisdictions allow a code table or standard detail when span, loads, materials, and framing meet stated limits. | That your project meets every limitation and that no point load, lateral function, or unusual foundation condition requires engineering. |
| Project-specific engineered design | Wide spans, multiple stories, point loads, unusual materials, lateral walls, or conditions outside prescriptive limits. | Who is authorized to prepare or seal the plans, what must be kept on site, and how field changes are approved. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using a generic internet header chart: Charts apply only to stated spans, loads, species, grades, and support conditions. Match every assumption or obtain a design for the house.
- Counting only the opening width: The load area above and point loads often govern more than the clear span.
- Ignoring the support below: A strong header can still fail if its reaction lands on an undersized joist, weak rim, or unsupported slab.
- Assuming doubled studs are enough: Jack and king-stud quantity, bearing length, fastening, and continuity must be specified.
- Cutting before the permit: Exposing the wall does not authorize demolition; unpermitted work can require reconstruction and delay inspections.
- Hiding framing too soon: Covering the header or connections before inspection can force finishes to be removed.
- Changing the approved design in the field: A different lumber grade, LVL thickness, post location, or opening height can change the calculations.
- Shoring on an unverified floor: Temporary reactions need a designed bearing path to the foundation or a verified structural member.
What a complete permit and construction package should answer
Before work begins, the drawings and conversations with the authority should make these points unambiguous:
- Exact rough-opening dimensions and finished elevations.
- Header material, size, orientation, splices, and connections.
- Number and arrangement of jack and king studs or engineered posts.
- Bearing length and the structure receiving each end reaction.
- Any beam, post, blocking, footing, or slab work below.
- Temporary-support layout and removal sequence.
- Utility relocation, fire-rating, insulation, weatherproofing, and lateral-bracing details where applicable.
- Required inspections, special inspections, sealed documents, and correction procedures.
When those answers are documented, the project can be priced and scheduled without guessing at the beam or discovering a hidden point load after demolition. When they are not documented, stop at investigation and obtain the missing design information.
