How to Verify Lumber Species, Grade, and Origin Before Buying Imported Wood

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Before paying for imported lumber, make four checks agree: the species or species group shown on the actual grade mark, the grade and inspection agency identified by that mark, the structural design information for the intended use, and lot-specific records tying the shipment to the claimed country of origin. A seller’s trade name, a visual glance at the boards, or a country printed on a general brochure is not enough by itself.

Request photographs of the real bundle or representative boards, obtain the complete mark and the agency name, and keep the supplier’s invoice, packing list, and origin records together. If any part of the story cannot be tied to the same lot, place the order on hold until the discrepancy is resolved.

What each piece of evidence can—and cannot—prove

Species, grade, and origin are separate questions. Treating one document or mark as proof of all three is the most common source of costly mistakes.

Question Best available evidence What it does not establish Buyer action
What wood or species group is this? The species or species-combination abbreviation on a recognized lumber grade stamp; for uncertain material, a qualified identification examination. A group abbreviation may cover several species, and a visual examination does not prove geographic origin. Decode the abbreviation with the inspection agency named on the mark. If the species matters commercially or legally, obtain professional identification.
What grade is it? The complete grade designation, mill or producer identification, and recognized inspection agency on the mark. A mark without a recognized basis may not tell you whether the product is suitable for construction. Match the grade to the intended use and request applicable design properties.
Where did it come from? Lot-specific harvest or origin statements and shipment records that match the invoice, packing list, and bundle identifiers. A grade stamp normally identifies grading information, not the geographic source of the trees. Define what “origin” means in the contract and require records for that exact lot.
Can it be used structurally? A recognized grading basis and design values for the actual species or group, grade, moisture condition, and governing code. Unadjusted laboratory or handbook averages are not automatically allowable design values. Have the values reviewed by the responsible designer or engineer before fabrication or installation.

American Wood Council guidance says that, with few exceptions, a lumber grade stamp includes the species or species combination, usually in abbreviated form, under the American Lumber Softwood Lumber Standard (PS 20). That makes the mark a useful starting point, not a stand-alone chain-of-custody certificate.

How to read the grade stamp on imported lumber

Get the mark from the actual material

Ask for a clear photograph of the stamp on the bundle you will receive, or on representative boards if the shipment has not arrived. A generic catalog image can show a different grade, mill, or production run. The photograph should show the entire mark rather than only the species abbreviation.

Record every element that appears: species or species combination, grade, moisture or seasoning designation if present, mill or producer identification, and the inspection agency. Preserve the image with the quotation and purchase order so you can compare it with the delivered bundle.

Resolve abbreviations with the named inspection agency

Species names on softwood marks are commonly abbreviated. If an abbreviation is unfamiliar, do not infer its meaning from a seller’s trade name. Contact the inspection agency printed on the mark and ask what species or species combination the notation represents and which grading rules apply. Keep the agency’s written response with the quote, invoice, and shipping records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The agency also matters because it indicates who inspected or certified the grade. U.S. Forest Service material on softwood lumber grading describes inspection-agency and reinspection context; a mark that cannot be attributed to a recognized agency deserves further verification before acceptance.

Do not mistake a species group for one exact species

SPF is a practical example. USDA APHIS describes SPF lumber as material made from varying proportions of spruce, pine, or fir. In the Lacey Act declaration context, APHIS’s SPF grouping applies only to the species listed for that designation. It cannot be expanded to unrelated species simply because a seller uses a similar commercial abbreviation.

Ask the supplier which species may be present in the lot and whether the group can be narrowed for that production run. If the project specification requires one exact species, a broad group mark may not satisfy it even when the mark itself is genuine.

How to check species when the mark is unclear

Use visual anatomy only as an initial screen

For a preliminary check, take a fresh transverse (cross-grain) slice from a representative board and examine it with a hand lens. USDA APHIS’s CITES timber manual gives the concise instruction: “Examine the sliced wood with a hand lens.” Compare visible anatomical features with a current species description or identification key.

Sample more than one board when the shipment contains mixed bundles, different marks, or unexplained color and grain changes. A single attractive sample can be atypical, substituted, or from a different part of the shipment.

Know the limits of visual identification

Color, grain, scent, density by feel, and a hand-lens view can screen out an obvious mismatch, but they are not conclusive forensic identification for every commercial lumber species. Processing, drying, age, finishes, and look-alike species can obscure diagnostic features.

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s public wood-identification service typically identifies samples only to genus and does not determine geographic origin. A business with a high-value, disputed, or regulated shipment should consult a private wood-identification specialist or a local university rather than treating a public-service result as proof of country of harvest.

Escalate protected-species concerns

APHIS’s CITES timber guidance is intended to support identification and import or re-export decisions for protected timber. If a shipment could involve a CITES-listed species, work from the scientific name, source country, and product form and check the current CITES and import requirements. Do not rely on a seller’s common name or on a hand-lens screening result to clear regulated material.

How to verify grade and structural suitability

Match the grade to the intended application

First state what the lumber will do: framing, beams, decking, cladding, joinery, or a nonstructural finish. A visual appearance grade may be appropriate for one use and irrelevant to a load-bearing design. Ask for the recognized grade name and the grading standard under which it was assigned.

For construction lumber, look for an ALSC-compliant grade stamp or an equivalent grading basis accepted by the governing code and project authority. American Wood Council guidance warns that, without an ALSC-compliant grade stamp, the type of product intended for construction may not be knowable from the mark alone.

Request design properties for the exact material

Ask for design values applicable to the actual species or species group, grade, moisture condition, and end use. Imported species may have published design information, but the existence of a data sheet does not make every value interchangeable with domestic species values.

American Wood Council guidance on tropical hardwoods and other imported species cautions that average unadjusted ultimate values require adjustment under applicable standards. Do not copy an ultimate strength average into a calculation as an allowable value. The responsible designer must apply the required adjustment factors and code provisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat missing or conflicting marks as a hold point

If the photograph, invoice, and delivered bundle show different grades or species notations, stop fabrication and segregate the material. Ask the inspection agency and supplier to explain the discrepancy in writing. If no recognized grading basis or applicable design evidence can be established, do not use the material for a load-bearing purpose merely because the boards look sound.

How to establish geographic origin

Define “origin” in precise terms

“Imported” can describe where the shipment entered the country, where it was milled, or where the trees were harvested. Put the intended meaning in the purchase documents. For provenance, the useful question is usually the country of harvest, followed separately by the country of processing or export.

Request lot-specific records

Ask the supplier for a written origin statement tied to the exact lot, container, bundle numbers, or shipment identifiers. Compare it with the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or equivalent transport record, and any mill or producer documents supplied for that shipment. A general statement that a company “sources from” a country does not tie a particular bundle to that country.

Keep the records with the purchase file. If the supplier cannot identify the lot, ask what control system links its origin claim to production and shipping records. An unresolved gap is a reason to delay acceptance, especially when the project or client requires documented provenance.

Do not overread U.S. labeling guidance

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Country of Origin Labeling FAQ addresses specified agricultural commodities and their record options. It is not a general lumber-labeling rule. There is no universal U.S. retail lumber origin-labeling duty established by that guidance, so use the records and contract terms you can actually obtain rather than claiming that a statutory consumer label must appear on every board.

A pre-purchase verification workflow

  1. Define the requirement. Write down the exact species or acceptable species group, grade, dimensions, moisture condition, structural or nonstructural use, and the origin meaning required by the project.
  2. Request the actual mark. Obtain a legible photograph of the grade mark on the offered bundle or representative boards. Require the full notation, not a cropped species code.
  3. Identify the grading agency. Record the agency, mill or producer, and grade. If any abbreviation is unclear, ask the named inspection agency to interpret it and retain the response.
  4. Check group designations. If the mark says SPF or another group, ask which species are permitted in that designation and whether the supplier can narrow the composition for this lot.
  5. Define and document origin. State whether you need country of harvest, processing country, or both. Request records that connect the claim to bundle, container, or shipment identifiers.
  6. Reconcile commercial documents. Compare the origin statement and product description across the quotation, purchase order, invoice, packing list, and transport records. Note any changed species name, grade, mill, or bundle number.
  7. Screen uncertain wood. If the species is not clear, examine a fresh cross-grain sample with a hand lens as an initial check. Do not present that screen as proof of origin.
  8. Escalate important uncertainty. For high-value, disputed, or regulated wood, use a qualified identification professional. For a potential protected species, follow current CITES and import requirements using the scientific name, source country, and product form.
  9. Confirm structural evidence. Obtain recognized design properties for the actual grade and species or group. Have the project’s designer or engineer review the values and required adjustments before use.
  10. Inspect on arrival. Photograph the delivered marks and bundle identifiers, compare them with the approved records, and quarantine any mismatch before cutting or installation.

How to compare two imported lumber offers

Price should be considered only after the evidence is comparable. Use the same four axes for every quote.

Comparison axis Stronger offer Warning sign
Species specificity Exact species or a clearly defined, permitted species group with an agency-confirmed abbreviation. A marketing name, unexplained abbreviation, or group treated as one exact species.
Grade and inspection Complete mark, recognized inspection agency, identifiable producer, and grade accepted for the intended market and use. Cropped mark, unverifiable agency, or a grade that cannot be connected to construction requirements.
Origin evidence Lot-specific records matching bundle or shipment identifiers and a clearly defined country claim. Country stated only in a brochure or invoice with no lot connection.
Structural design support Applicable values for the actual species or group, grade, moisture condition, and governing code, with required adjustments understood. Unadjusted averages, generic strength claims, or no evidence for the marked grade.

A lower price does not compensate for uncertainty on any of these axes. If one offer has better records or a narrower species definition, compare the usable, documented material rather than the nominal price per board.

Common failure modes and what to do

The seller sends only a species name

Request the complete grade mark and inspection agency. A species name without grade information cannot establish structural classification, and it does not establish origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stamp is present but the abbreviation is unfamiliar

Contact the inspection agency printed on the mark. Do not rely on an internet list of abbreviations when the shipment’s agency or grading rule may differ.

The supplier says SPF is a single species

Ask which listed spruce, pine, or fir species may be included and whether the lot can be identified more narrowly. Treat SPF as a group designation, not as proof of one species.

The boards look right but the paperwork names another country

Stop acceptance and reconcile the lot identifiers. Visual anatomy can screen species; it cannot establish geographic origin. Ask for corrected records or a written explanation tied to the shipment.

The supplier provides a strength number with no grade context

Ask whether the number is an unadjusted ultimate value, a characteristic value, or an allowable design value, and which standard produced it. Do not use it in a structural design until the responsible professional confirms the applicable adjustments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The mark is missing or not ALSC-compliant

For load-bearing work, treat the material as unverified until an accepted grading basis and design evidence are supplied. A visual inspection cannot replace the missing classification.

A protected-species concern appears after ordering

Pause import, resale, or installation decisions and obtain current CITES and import guidance. Assemble the scientific name, source country, product form, invoices, and shipment records for the relevant authority or specialist.

Records to keep with the purchase

  • Photographs of the complete grade mark on the offered and delivered bundles.
  • The full species or species-group notation, grade, mill or producer, and inspection agency.
  • Written clarification from the inspection agency for unfamiliar abbreviations.
  • The purchase order, invoice, packing list, and transport documents.
  • Lot, bundle, container, or shipment identifiers linking the origin statement to the material.
  • The supplier’s definition of origin, including country of harvest and processing country when both matter.
  • Any species-identification report, sample photographs, or specialist correspondence.
  • Structural design properties and the designer’s record of applicable adjustments and code acceptance.
  • Inspection notes and photographs from delivery, including any segregated or rejected bundles.

This file gives you a traceable basis for resolving a mismatch before the lumber is cut, installed, or incorporated into a concealed assembly.
