How to Use Motion, Door, and Temperature Sensors to Automate Your Home

Use a simple three-part pattern: a sensor event is the trigger, optional checks are conditions, and the resulting device control or message is the action. Motion can start a light routine, a door contact can send an alert or block a heating routine when a window is open, and a temperature reading can start climate equipment where the controller supports that sensor as a starter.

The reliable approach is to verify what your specific sensor, hub, border router, and app actually expose before designing the routine. The same physical sensor may offer different triggers or values in different ecosystems, regions, or controller versions.

The trigger–conditions–actions model

Home Assistant describes the sequence this way: “When a trigger reacts, the automation starts: Home Assistant checks the conditions, and if they are met, performs the actions.” See the Home Assistant automation-trigger documentation for the platform’s terminology and trigger types.

Trigger: what starts the routine

A trigger is a change the controller can recognize. Examples include motion being detected, a contact sensor changing to open, or a temperature reaching a selected threshold. A trigger is an event, not a complete description of what should happen next.

Conditions: when the routine is allowed to run

Conditions narrow the circumstances. You might allow a motion routine only after dark, send a door alert only while the home is armed, or allow a heating action only when a window contact reports closed. Whether a particular condition is available depends on the platform and the states exposed by the device.

Actions: what the automation does

Actions can control a light, send a notification, or operate compatible climate equipment. Build a reset or stopping action as deliberately as the starting action: a light needs a way to turn off, and a notification workflow needs a clear rule for when it stops or repeats.

Check compatibility before installing sensors

Sensor automation fails most often when the device connects successfully but does not expose the event or value the routine needs. Work through these checks before choosing a model or promising a feature to a household.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the protocol to the controller

Identify the sensor’s protocol and the controller that will run the automation. Check whether the setup requires a hub, bridge, or Thread border router, and confirm that the existing controller supports that protocol. A sensor that uses Thread, for example, still needs a compatible Thread border router in the installation.

Confirm the exact state or reading in the app

Open the automation editor and look for the specific capability you plan to use: motion state, open/closed contact state, temperature value, or another reading. Google Home warns that third-party compatibility varies and recommends checking the device manual or manufacturer for the most accurate information. A device can connect while exposing only some of its controls or readings.

Plan the physical job for each sensor

Decide what the sensor is meant to accomplish before deciding where it belongs. A room-lighting motion sensor, an entry alert contact, and a window contact used to protect a heating routine have different useful locations and different consequences when an event is missed. During a renovation or new installation, document the intended sensor location, controller, and automation purpose so a later occupant can identify each device.

Design for the reset path and restarts

Test both sides of every event: motion detected and then cleared, door opened and then closed, and temperature moving back across the selected threshold. In Home Assistant, a trigger’s for duration does not survive a Home Assistant restart or an automation reload. If a delay must remain valid through a restart, use a platform-supported persistent timer or another design that explicitly stores the timing state; do not treat for alone as restart-proof.

How to turn on lights when motion is detected

A motion-to-light routine is the most useful first automation because it has an immediate result. It should contain both an activation rule and a deliberate shutoff rule, and it should acknowledge that a motion sensor reports movement events rather than proving that a person remains in the room.

Basic motion-light sequence

  1. Choose the motion event. In the automation editor, select the sensor’s motion-detected state as the trigger. Home Assistant documents motion as an automation condition and example; see its motion condition documentation.
  2. Add only the conditions you need. A time-of-day or occupancy-related condition can prevent lights from activating during periods when they are not wanted. Use a condition only if the controller exposes the required state reliably.
  3. Turn on the target light. Select the room light or light group as the action. If the platform offers brightness or scene controls, confirm those controls are exposed for the particular light before relying on them.
  4. Create the off behavior. Use the sensor’s cleared/no-motion state or a no-motion interval to turn the light off. Set the interval for the room’s real use: a short delay may switch lights off while someone is still reading or moving slowly, while a long delay leaves lights on unnecessarily.
  5. Exercise the complete cycle. Walk through the detection area, verify the light turns on, remain still for the selected interval, and verify that the no-motion path turns it off. Repeat after changing the interval.

Conditions that make motion lighting usable

  • Time or light-level limits: Run the routine only when lighting is needed if those states are available.
  • Manual-control behavior: Decide whether a manual switch should pause the automation or whether the next motion event may turn the light on again.
  • Re-trigger behavior: Check whether new motion restarts the no-motion countdown or creates another action. The controller’s handling of repeated events determines the result.
  • Room-specific delay: Tune a hallway, bathroom, stairway, and work area separately rather than applying one interval everywhere.

Do not describe the result as guaranteed occupancy detection. The documented trigger is motion; a person can be present without creating a new event, and a non-person movement can create one.

How to get an alert when a door or window opens

A contact sensor reports an opening’s state, normally open or closed. That state can start an alert immediately, become a condition in another automation, or provide the reset event that ends an alert workflow.

Door-open notification

  1. Select the contact-open trigger. Choose the door or window contact’s open state in the automation editor. Home Assistant lists a door-open trigger among device and entity changes that can start an automation.
  2. Define the alert window. Add conditions such as a schedule or an armed/disarmed state only if your controller exposes them. Without a condition, the alert will run every time the contact changes to open.
  3. Choose the action and its detail. Send a notification to the intended recipient or activate another alert device. Include the opening’s name so multiple contacts are distinguishable.
  4. Define closure behavior. Decide whether closing the contact ends an alert, sends a separate message, or simply restores the normal state. The correct choice depends on whether the alert is informational or needs acknowledgement.
  5. Test open, close, and repeat. Open the door, confirm the alert, close it, and open it again. Verify that the controller does not suppress a second event when the contact has returned to closed.

Using a window contact as a heating condition

A window contact can protect a broader climate routine: the temperature event may be valid, but the heating action is permitted only when the window reports closed. This is a condition, not a replacement for the temperature trigger. Check that the contact state is available to the same controller that operates the climate equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contact-sensor caveats

  • Confirm that the app exposes a binary open/closed state rather than only a generic device presence.
  • Give each opening a precise name and document which physical opening it represents.
  • Test the contact after installation and after any hub, bridge, or automation reload.
  • Do not assume that every platform exposes the same contact states or allows them in the same kinds of routines.

Google Home includes contact sensors among supported binary-state automation starters, but its documentation also notes that third-party compatibility can vary. Verify the exact device and controller combination before relying on an alert or climate interlock.

Can a temperature sensor turn on the heat?

Yes, where the automation platform supports the temperature sensor as a starter and exposes the climate equipment as an action. A threshold event can start a heating routine, but the exact trigger, condition, and control options differ by ecosystem.

Temperature-threshold sequence

  1. Verify the reading. Confirm that the controller displays the sensor’s temperature value and identifies the unit and room correctly.
  2. Choose the threshold trigger. Select a rule such as temperature reaching or crossing the chosen level. Google Home documents temperature change or reaching a specific level as a supported starter behavior.
  3. Protect the action with conditions. Add a closed-window condition, a schedule, or another available state when the heating system should not respond. Do not assume that a condition available for one device is available for another.
  4. Operate compatible climate equipment. Select the heating action the controller exposes. Confirm whether it can switch a mode, change a setpoint, or perform only a more limited command.
  5. Test both directions. Warm or cool the sensor through the selected threshold as safely as possible, confirm the trigger, and then move the reading back across the threshold to verify the intended reset or opposing action.

Why temperature automations need extra verification

Google Home’s documentation describes temperature sensors as starter-only in the documented behavior. That means you should not assume a temperature reading can also be used as every kind of condition, or that every third-party sensor exposes its reading to every automation editor. A product may report temperature in one app while withholding it from another platform’s routines.

Use a temperature sensor as an automation input only after confirming the reading’s availability, the threshold behavior, and the climate device’s available actions. A threshold that repeatedly crosses back and forth can also produce repeated starts if the platform does not provide suitable controls, so observe the routine during testing and choose conditions that fit the room and equipment.

Combine sensors into useful routines

The value of sensors increases when one event is checked against another state. Keep the logic explicit so a future change to one sensor does not silently alter the whole routine.

Motion plus lighting conditions

Trigger on motion, check the time or available light state, and turn on the light. Use the no-motion state or interval as the separate off action. This arrangement avoids treating a motion event as continuous occupancy.

Door opening plus an entry alert

Trigger when the entry contact changes to open, check whether alerts are enabled for that period, and send a named notification. Use the closed state to restore the normal status or end an acknowledgement workflow.

Temperature plus window status

Trigger when the temperature reaches the selected threshold, check that the window contact is closed, and then operate the heating equipment. If the window opens afterward, create a separate rule for the open state rather than assuming the original condition will be reevaluated automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Motion plus a door event

A door opening can establish that an area was entered, while motion can control lighting after entry. Whether a controller can combine those states in one routine is platform-dependent; if the editor cannot expose both reliably, use separate automations with clear names and test their interaction.

Platform notes and named device examples

Home Assistant

Home Assistant documents triggers based on device or entity changes, including a door opening, motion being detected, and a temperature value rising above a threshold. Its trigger documentation is the authoritative reference for the trigger terminology and for timing behavior such as the restart limitation of a for duration: https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/automation/trigger/.

The Home Assistant Aqara integration lists the Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2, Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2, and Aqara Climate Sensor among supported Matter products and describes local Matter operation. The integration page is community-maintained Home Assistant documentation, not a guarantee that every other platform supports the same features: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/aqara/.

Google Home

Google Home lists contact sensors and temperature-related starter behaviors in its supported automation documentation. It also cautions that third-party compatibility varies. Treat the app’s currently displayed starter and action choices as the final check for your exact sensor, controller, account region, and device firmware: https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/15684394?hl=en.

Matter and Thread example

Aqara states that its Door and Window Sensor P2 connects through a Matter-compatible Thread border router to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Aqara Home. This is manufacturer-stated compatibility. Verify the exact controller, app, region, and feature exposure before installation: https://www.aqara.com/en/support/door-and-window-sensor-p2.

A commissioning and testing checklist

  1. Write the job in one sentence. For example: “When motion is detected in the hall after dark, turn on the hall light and turn it off after the area is clear.”
  2. List the required states. Record the trigger, each condition, the action, and the reset event. If a state is not visible in the editor, stop and resolve compatibility before proceeding.
  3. Confirm infrastructure. Check the protocol, hub or bridge requirement, Thread border router requirement where applicable, and the controller that will host the automation.
  4. Install and name the sensor. Use a location-based name that distinguishes similar doors, windows, rooms, and temperature points.
  5. Build the smallest working rule. Start with one trigger and one action. Add conditions only after the basic event is visible and reliable.
  6. Add the reset path. Configure no-motion, closed-contact, temperature-return, or another explicit ending event as required by the routine.
  7. Test normal and edge sequences. Trigger the event, clear it, repeat it, and test what happens if a condition is false. Include a controller restart or automation reload when timing persistence matters.
  8. Document the final behavior. Record the sensor, controller, conditions, delays, and expected result so maintenance does not require guessing.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely point to check Correction
The sensor connects but the planned trigger is absent The controller does not expose that capability for this device Check the device manual and the platform’s current automation editor; redesign around the states that are actually exposed.
A motion light never turns off No cleared/no-motion action or an interval that is continually restarted Add an explicit reset path, then test how repeated motion affects the countdown.
A door alert fires at unwanted times The automation has no schedule or armed-state condition Add an available condition or narrow the trigger period.
Heating does not start at the temperature threshold The temperature sensor is not available as a starter, or the climate action is unsupported Verify the reading, threshold behavior, and climate controls in the same platform before changing the rule.
A timed action behaves differently after a restart Home Assistant for timing was interrupted by a restart or automation reload Use a persistent timer or another restart-aware design rather than relying on for alone.
An automation works in one app but not another Feature exposure differs between ecosystems Recheck protocol, hub or border-router support, account region, and the target app’s supported starters and actions.

How to choose among motion, contact, and temperature sensors

Decision What to verify Why it matters
Protocol and controller The sensor protocol and compatibility with the existing controller A compatible physical sensor cannot run a routine if the controller cannot communicate with it.
Infrastructure Whether a hub, bridge, or Thread border router is required Required infrastructure must be available before commissioning.
Exposed automation features Motion state, open/closed contact state, temperature, light level, or other readings The automation editor can use only the states and values it exposes.
Placement and purpose The room, opening, or climate zone and the job the sensor must perform Placement determines whether an event represents the condition you intend to automate.
Timing and failure behavior Reset events, repeated triggers, reload behavior, and controller restarts A routine that works once may still fail during a restart or an incomplete event cycle.

Practical rules for dependable automations

  • Start with one clear event and one observable action, then add conditions.
  • Name sensors for their physical location, not merely their product type.
  • Give every “on” action a deliberate “off,” “closed,” or return-to-normal path.
  • Use a motion event as evidence of movement, not proof of continuous occupancy.
  • Verify temperature readings and climate commands in the same ecosystem before depending on them.
  • Check the effect of hub, bridge, border-router, restart, and automation-reload events on timing.
  • Retest after changing a delay, threshold, controller, or firmware because feature exposure can differ.
