To avoid roadwork, check the route before leaving, inspect live traffic and alternate routes, start navigation with voice alerts, and reassess whenever conditions or the route change. Google Maps and Waze can use reported construction and closures, but neither can guarantee that every work zone is mapped or that a detour will remain unchanged. Posted signs, temporary controls, and traffic law always take priority.
The reliable workflow: preview, navigate, verify
A navigation app is most useful when you treat it as a live information source rather than an authority that knows every lane closure. Use this sequence for a trip that may cross a construction area:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Preview the trip while parked. Enter the destination, display traffic, and inspect every route the app offers. Look for construction, closures, unusually slow sections, and road types you cannot use.
- Choose a workable alternative. Compare the estimated time, distance, incident information, restrictions, and the clarity of the detour. Select a route you can follow legally from current road signs, not simply the one with the smallest number on the screen.
- Start live navigation. Enable voice guidance and traffic alerts. Live routing can react when a report appears or traffic changes.
- Recheck every change. If the app reroutes, a road sign contradicts it, or traffic stops unexpectedly, pull over safely or ask a passenger to review the options. Follow the temporary control on the road.
This process answers the practical questions behind “How do I avoid road construction with Google Maps?” and “Can Waze reroute around a road closure?” It improves your odds of avoiding a known problem without pretending that map data is complete.
Preview the route before you leave
Google Maps: inspect traffic and construction before starting
Google Maps navigation uses real-time traffic information to calculate a route and can show delays such as crashes or construction. On an Android phone or tablet, enter the destination, choose Directions, and review the proposed routes before tapping to start navigation. Use the traffic map view to see where congestion and reported incidents lie along each option. The exact controls and labels can vary by device, language, and region; Google notes that some features are not available everywhere. The documented Android workflow is described in Google Maps Help: Use navigation in Google Maps.

Look beyond the colored traffic line. A route that is only a few minutes faster may pass through a work zone with a changing lane pattern, while a slightly longer route may use a more predictable road. If the map shows a construction delay or a closure, open the alternate route choices and select one that remains compatible with your vehicle and the signs you expect to encounter.
Waze: preview alternate routes and plan the departure
Waze presents alternate routes after you enter a destination. Review those choices before moving, rather than waiting for the first reroute. Waze also has a Plan a drive function: save the destination and intended arrival time, and it can send a reminder for when to leave using current traffic conditions. If you grant location access, the reminder can also use your location at that time. The documented Android workflow is in Waze Help: Plan a drive.
Planning is useful for a scheduled arrival at a job, appointment, or event because the recommended departure time can change as traffic develops. It is still an estimate; a closure that has not reached the map can change the trip after you start.

A two-minute pre-departure check
- Confirm the destination pin and the intended arrival time.
- Display traffic and scan the complete route, not just the first few miles.
- Read incident labels for construction, lane closures, crashes, or severe congestion.
- Open alternate routes and note where each leaves and rejoins the main road.
- Check whether a route uses toll roads, ferries, freeways, restricted streets, or roads unsuitable for your vehicle.
- Set up the phone, mount, and audio before the vehicle moves.
Compare route options by evidence, not by color
When an app offers two or more routes, compare them on the same criteria. The figures shown for time and distance are predictions that can change; they are not guarantees.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Current traffic and incidents | Does the route already show construction, a closure, a crash, or a queue? Is the report close to the road segment you would use? |
| Estimated time and distance | How much time does the alternative add, and could a short route with a work zone be less predictable than a longer clear route? |
| Road type and restrictions | Will it use a toll road, freeway, ferry, restricted bridge, low-clearance road, or another road type you need to avoid? |
| Detour clarity | Can you identify the turns and follow them from signs if the app loses signal or the map is stale? |
| Alert provenance | Is the information a current observation, an official closure entry, or an older community report? Treat each as evidence with a different degree of certainty. |
| On-road confirmation | Do cones, variable message signs, police directions, or temporary arrows agree with the proposed route? |
Do not infer that one app or one type of report is universally complete. A live user observation can be valuable, while an official planned closure can provide advance notice; either can be delayed, removed, or limited by local coverage.
Start navigation and keep live alerts on
Google Maps during the trip
After selecting a route, start navigation and use voice traffic alerts so you do not need to read the screen while driving. Google Maps can display construction-related delays and other incidents along the route. During navigation, the report control in supported locations includes categories such as crash, traffic jam, and construction. Google’s car-integrated navigation instructions also list lane closure as a report type, although the precise menu depends on the integration and region.

Waze during the trip
Waze can recalculate when traffic or a closure changes the expected route and can show alternate routes. Keep voice guidance enabled and glance at the map only when conditions allow. If a route suddenly changes, listen for the reason, then review the choice when safely stopped rather than making a sudden maneuver.
Waze’s avoid preferences include toll roads, ferries, and freeways. They influence route calculation but do not guarantee that the selected road type will never appear: if available routing choices are limited, Waze warns that one of those road types may still be required. The limitation is documented in Waze Help: Avoid toll roads, ferries, and freeways.
How closure reports reach the map
User-reported closures
Waze’s closure workflow lets a driver report a road that is closed. The report immediately affects that reporter’s route. Waze says the closure becomes visible on the map after more Wazers report it, and it can be removed as drivers begin traveling the road again. Reports should describe conditions observed in real time and be made close to the actual incident. This means a newly closed road may not be visible to every driver immediately, and a report can change as conditions are verified or the road reopens. See Waze Help: Report road closures.
The documented workflows cover the phone app, Android Auto, and CarPlay. Closure reporting is not supported on Android Automotive, so a vehicle with that built-in platform may not offer the same report control. Do not stop in a live lane to make a report; use a passenger or wait in a safe place.

Approved partners such as transportation agencies can submit planned and real-time closures through Waze’s partner tools and map editor. A planned closure can include start and end details; a real-time closure can appear immediately. When a segment is marked closed, Waze says its routing will not use that segment. Relevant planned closures appear when they affect a route. The partner process is explained in Waze Partners Help: Plan road closures with the Waze Map Editor.

This describes how partner data is handled, not a promise that every public agency submits data or that every work zone is represented. A contractor’s lane shift, a rapidly changing detour, or a closure announced only on a roadside sign may reach the map later or not at all.
How to tell whether a detour has changed
A changing detour is often easier to detect by combining the app with what you see on the road. Use this check whenever the route line changes or traffic does not match the map:
- Notice the trigger. Listen for a reroute message and look for a new incident icon, a sharply different arrival time, or a route line that moves away from the planned road.
- Find a safe stopping point. Do not read the phone while moving or cross lanes to follow a new instruction. Pull into a legal parking area, rest area, or other safe location, or ask a passenger to inspect the screen.
- Compare the new route. Check its time, distance, road type, restrictions, and the exact point where it rejoins the original route. Make sure the suggested turns are physically possible for your vehicle.
- Read the physical controls. Follow cones, barricades, police directions, temporary arrows, and posted detour signs even if the map points elsewhere.
- Continue only when the instruction is consistent. If the app and the road disagree, use the lawful on-road instruction and let the app recalculate from a safe position.
Google Maps states the governing rule plainly: “When in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path that you’re on.” The instruction appears in Google Maps Help: Get directions and show routes in Google Maps.
What to do when the app sends you toward a closure
The closure is visible on the road but missing from the map
Assume the road sign and barrier are current. Do not drive through a closed segment because the app has not updated. Follow the signed detour, then let the navigation app recalculate after you are on a legal road. If a passenger is available, they can submit a closure report; otherwise, wait until you are safely parked.
The app knows about construction but still chooses the road
A construction icon may represent a delay rather than a full closure. Read the route details and inspect alternatives. If every practical route uses the affected corridor, allow extra time and follow the temporary traffic pattern. An “avoid” preference is not a promise that the app can remove every road segment of that type.
The suggested detour uses an unsuitable road
Reject a route that conflicts with vehicle height, weight, access, private-road restrictions, ferry schedules, toll requirements, or posted local controls. Stop safely, select another available route, or enter an intermediate destination on a suitable road to guide the app away from the problem. Never make an illegal turn simply to stay on the blue route line.

The map shows an old closure after the road has reopened
Recheck the current route and watch the road ahead. Waze says closure information can be removed as drivers begin using the road again, but map changes depend on reports and processing. Treat the reopening as unconfirmed until signs and traffic conditions support it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnderstand toll and road-type estimates
Route preferences are useful filters, not physical barriers. In Waze, selecting avoidance for toll roads, ferries, or freeways can steer the calculation away from those types when alternatives exist. When no reasonable alternative is available, one may still appear. Confirm the actual restriction and any payment requirement at the road.
Waze’s displayed toll amount is an estimate based on community information, the route, and your settings. Waze notes that congestion-priced tolls may not be calculated. Use the estimate for comparison, not as a guaranteed charge. Its documented explanation is at Waze Help: View and compare toll prices.
Plan for scheduled work, events, and long trips
For a departure several hours or days away, save the trip in Waze’s Plan a drive feature with the desired arrival time. The app can send a leave reminder based on real-time traffic, and location access can improve the reminder by considering where you are at the time. Open the trip again before leaving to see whether a new closure or work zone has appeared.
For a recurring construction route, build a habit of checking at the start of every shift rather than assuming yesterday’s detour remains valid. Planned closures may have a scheduled end, but field conditions can extend, shorten, or change the signed path. The app’s expected arrival time should be treated as a moving estimate.
Safety setup for phone-based navigation
- Set the destination, route, avoid preferences, and audio volume before the vehicle moves.
- Use voice guidance or a properly positioned in-car display; do not hold or read a phone while driving.
- Keep the screen where it does not block the windshield, mirrors, instruments, or airbags.
- A phone mount is an optional positioning aid for viewing navigation. It does not provide traffic data, detect closures, or make a detour safe.
- Pull over before entering an address, comparing routes, reporting an incident, or changing settings.
- Keep enough attention for workers, cones, emergency vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and temporary lane markings.
Platform, region, and coverage limitations
Google Maps and Waze do not expose identical controls on every phone, vehicle interface, language, or country. A report category documented for Android, Android Auto, CarPlay, or car-integrated navigation may not appear on another platform. Data also depends on local map coverage, user participation, partner submissions, connectivity, and how quickly a change is reported.
Because of those limits, neither app guarantees that you will avoid all roadwork, discover every closure, or receive the fastest route. Use the map to prepare and adapt, then use your eyes, the signs, and the law to make the final decision on the road.
Quick Recap
A repeatable checklist for every construction-area trip
- Enter the exact destination and intended arrival time.
- Display traffic and inspect the whole route for construction, closures, crashes, and queues.
- Open alternate routes and compare time, distance, road type, restrictions, detour clarity, and incident evidence.
- Apply toll, ferry, or freeway avoidance only as a preference; verify that the resulting route is legal and suitable.
- Start navigation with voice alerts and mount the phone securely before moving.
- When an alert or reroute appears, stop safely before reviewing it.
- Give priority to temporary signs, barriers, traffic controllers, and posted regulations.
- If the map is wrong, follow the signed detour and allow the app to recalculate from a safe road.
