Set the system to Cool, choose a comfortable temperature, and leave that setting steady. Use Auto fan (or the lowest speed that distributes air), replace dirty filters, keep supply and return vents open, and clear leaves and weeds from the outdoor unit. A heat pump cools by moving heat from inside your home to the outdoors, so the outdoor unit running in summer is normal. Arrange professional service at least once a year; refrigerant, electrical, coil-disassembly, and condensate repairs belong to a qualified technician.

What a heat pump does in summer

In cooling mode, a heat pump reverses the direction used for winter heating. The indoor coil absorbs heat from room air, refrigerant carries that heat outside, and the outdoor coil releases it. The U.S. Department of Energy describes the process simply: “During the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your house to the outdoors.” The system may also remove moisture as warm indoor air passes over the cold indoor coil.

Because the outdoor section rejects indoor heat, it should run while the system is cooling. That sound is not evidence that the unit is heating the house. High-efficiency heat pumps can dehumidify better than standard central air conditioners, according to the Department of Energy, which can make a room feel comfortable at a higher thermostat setting.

Set the thermostat and fan for reliable cooling

1. Select Cool, not Auto

Use the thermostat’s Cool mode for summer operation. ENERGY STAR advises avoiding thermostat Auto mode because it can allow the heat pump to switch between heating and cooling during an unseasonably warm or cold day. “Auto” on a fan menu is different: that setting controls the indoor blower and is generally appropriate.

2. Pick a comfortable temperature and hold it

There is no single summer temperature that suits every home. Comfort depends on outdoor climate, humidity, sun exposure, insulation, occupancy, and the equipment’s design. Choose the highest temperature that keeps occupants comfortable and dry, then leave it steady. Unlike a furnace or boiler, a heat pump generally does not save energy when you turn the thermostat down while away or asleep; recovering from a large setback can make the system run longer and may trigger supplemental electric resistance heat on some installations.

3. Choose Auto fan or the lowest effective speed

Start with Auto fan, which runs the blower only when the system is actively conditioning. If rooms at the far end of the duct system remain warm, select the lowest continuous fan speed that spreads cooled air adequately. Higher speed is not automatically better: it can increase noise and may move air across the coil too quickly for optimum moisture removal.

4. Use only a compatible schedule thermostat

If you want programmed schedules or setbacks, use a thermostat specifically designed for heat pumps. Department of Energy guidance notes that these controls change temperature gradually so the system does not unnecessarily energize electric-resistance backup elements. Do not assume a generic programmable or smart thermostat is compatible. Check the heat-pump model, auxiliary-heat wiring, reversing-valve setting, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions before changing controls.

Prepare airflow before blaming the equipment

Check the filter on a monthly summer routine

Inspect the air filter about once a month during heavy cooling use. Replace it when visibly dirty and follow the equipment manual for the correct size and type. ENERGY STAR says filters should be changed at least every three months, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions. A loaded filter restricts airflow, makes the compressor work harder, reduces comfort, wastes energy, and can contribute to premature failure.

Install the filter in the direction shown by its airflow arrow. A filter that is too restrictive for the blower, or installed backward, can create the same symptoms as a failing heat pump. If you are unsure which rating your system can handle, use the owner’s manual or ask a technician rather than choosing the densest filter available.

Keep every supply and return path open

  • Leave supply registers open, including in rooms that are used less often.
  • Keep furniture, rugs, curtains, and storage boxes away from supply and return grilles.
  • Do not close many registers to force more air into one room; that can raise duct pressure and reduce total airflow.
  • Make sure interior doors allow a return-air path. A closed bedroom with no return grille can become warmer even when the system is operating normally.

Clear the outdoor unit

Remove leaves, grass clippings, plastic, and other debris from around the outdoor coil. Trim vegetation so air can circulate freely on all sides, while observing the clearance specified by the manufacturer. Do not bend coil fins, spray water into electrical components, or cover the unit while it is operating. The outdoor fan and coil need unobstructed airflow to reject indoor heat.

How to start cooling after winter

  1. Read the owner’s manual. Confirm the correct mode, filter size, required clearances, and any seasonal startup procedure for your model.
  2. Inspect the indoor area. Install a clean filter, open supply and return vents, and check for obvious water around the indoor unit.
  3. Inspect the outdoor area. Remove leaves and weeds around the cabinet without opening electrical panels.
  4. Set the thermostat. Select Cool, choose a comfortable setpoint, and select Auto fan or the lowest speed that reaches all occupied rooms.
  5. Observe one complete cycle. Confirm that supply air becomes cooler, the outdoor fan runs, and condensate drains normally. A short delay before the compressor starts can be normal.
  6. Stop and call for service if needed. Turn the system off and contact a qualified technician for repeated breaker trips, burning smells, damaged wiring, refrigerant concerns, ice that returns after airflow checks, or water leaks.

Humidity control and summer comfort

Cooling and dehumidification are related but not identical. The indoor coil must be cold enough, and air must contact it for enough time, to condense moisture. High-efficiency heat pumps can provide strong dehumidification, but results depend on sizing, airflow, indoor humidity, and control strategy. An oversized system may satisfy the temperature quickly and shut off before removing much moisture; a variable-speed system can often run longer at a lower output, allowing more moisture removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the thermostat’s humidity setting only if the heat pump and controls support it. Do not lower the temperature excessively to compensate for a humidity problem before checking airflow, filter condition, condensate drainage, and equipment sizing with a professional.

What to do when the heat pump runs but does not cool

The air is weak from the vents

  • Check that the filter is clean and installed in the correct direction.
  • Verify that supply and return grilles are open and unobstructed.
  • Look for obvious duct disconnections or crushed flexible duct in accessible areas.
  • If airflow remains poor, switch the system off and arrange service; a blower, coil, duct, or control fault may require instruments and disassembly.

The air blows but is not cooler

  • Confirm that the thermostat says Cool and is set below the current room temperature.
  • Check that the outdoor unit has power and that its disconnect has not been switched off. Do not remove electrical covers.
  • Clear leaves and vegetation from the outdoor coil area.
  • If the compressor runs continuously without lowering the temperature, refrigerant, compressor, metering, or airflow problems are possible. Refrigerant charging and sealed-system diagnosis require a qualified technician.

Ice appears on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines

Ice commonly accompanies restricted airflow or a refrigeration fault. Turn the system off at the thermostat and let the ice thaw; running it while iced can worsen damage. Check the filter and open vents. If icing returns, schedule service rather than scraping the coil or adding refrigerant yourself.

Water appears near the indoor unit

Cooling creates condensate that should flow through a drain. A blocked drain, failed condensate pump, frozen coil, or damaged pan can cause leakage. Turn off cooling if water is approaching electrical equipment, protect flooring, and call a technician. ENERGY STAR includes checking the condensate drain in its heat-pump maintenance checklist.

The breaker trips or there is an electrical smell

Reset a tripped breaker only once if the manufacturer permits it and no hazard is visible. If it trips again, or if you smell burning, hear unusual electrical buzzing, or see damaged wiring, leave the system off and obtain professional electrical diagnosis.

Maintenance that protects cooling performance

Homeowner checks

  • Inspect the filter monthly during heavy use and replace it when dirty, with three months as the ENERGY STAR minimum guidance unless the manual requires a shorter interval.
  • Keep indoor registers and returns open and clear.
  • Keep vegetation and debris away from the outdoor coil.
  • Watch for unusual noise, persistent ice, weak airflow, or condensate leaks.
  • Record filter changes and service dates so a recurring problem is easier to diagnose.

Professional annual service

Arrange a tune-up at least once each year, ideally before the cooling season. A qualified technician can inspect electrical connections and safety controls, measure operating temperatures and pressures, check refrigerant performance for leaks, clean coils where appropriate, verify blower and fan operation, and inspect the condensate drain. EPA guidance likewise recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions and obtaining professional service at least annually.

Homeowners should not open refrigerant or electrical compartments, charge refrigerant, repair wiring, or perform coil cleaning that requires disassembly. Those tasks involve pressure, electrical, and environmental hazards and require appropriate tools and certification.

Choosing a replacement or upgrade for summer cooling

If the system is old, noisy, difficult to maintain, or unable to control humidity, compare the whole installation rather than the outdoor unit alone. The Department of Energy identifies ducted, ductless, and variable-speed configurations; EPA emphasizes correct sizing and maintenance as efficiency factors.

Decision What to compare Why it affects summer use
Ducted or ductless Existing duct condition, room-by-room needs, zoning, and installation access Ductless heads can target individual spaces; ducted systems distribute air through existing or new ducts. Leaky or undersized ducts can erase equipment efficiency gains.
Fixed-speed or variable-speed Part-load operation, humidity goals, noise, controls, and repair complexity Variable-speed equipment can run longer at lower output, often improving temperature stability and moisture removal. Fixed-speed equipment may have a simpler, lower-cost design.
Thermostat and controls Heat-pump compatibility, reversing-valve logic, auxiliary heat, and humidity functions An incompatible thermostat can cause incorrect mode changes or unnecessary resistance-heat operation.
Size Room-by-room heat-load calculation, insulation, windows, and duct capacity Oversizing can shorten cycles and reduce dehumidification; undersizing can cause long runtimes and poor comfort. Correct sizing also limits maintenance and operating costs.
Installation quality Refrigerant-line length, airflow, drainage, electrical work, commissioning, and warranty requirements Even efficient equipment performs poorly if airflow, charge, drainage, or controls are incorrect.
Noise and access Outdoor-unit location, indoor fan sound, service clearances, and filter access A quiet, accessible installation is easier to live with and maintain throughout the summer.
Local operating cost Electricity rate, demand charges, climate, backup-heat use, and available incentives Published efficiency ratings do not predict an identical bill in every home. Ask for a location-specific operating estimate.

When comparing bids, ask for the calculated design capacity, indoor and outdoor model numbers, expected airflow, thermostat compatibility, condensate plan, commissioning measurements, and maintenance requirements. An ENERGY STAR certified heat pump may be worth considering, but eligibility and performance depend on the complete installed system and local conditions.

Energy use and maintenance economics

ENERGY STAR reports that a typical household energy bill is around $1,900 per year, with almost half going to heating and cooling; this is a broad current product-guidance figure, not a prediction for a particular home. The Department of Energy says today’s heat pumps can reduce electricity use for heating by up to 75% compared with electric resistance heating. That comparison concerns heating, while this article addresses summer cooling, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed cooling-bill reduction.

The Department of Energy’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Home Heating and Cooling says following a regular maintenance schedule can help reduce heating and cooling costs by 10% or more. Actual savings vary with equipment condition, climate, thermostat settings, airflow, and electricity prices. Maintenance also helps identify drainage, electrical, and refrigerant problems before they cause a mid-season breakdown.

Summer operating checklist

  • Mode: Cool, not thermostat Auto.
  • Temperature: a comfortable steady setting suited to your household and humidity.
  • Fan: Auto or the lowest speed that distributes air to occupied rooms.
  • Filter: inspect monthly during heavy use; replace when dirty and at least as often as the manual requires.
  • Airflow: supply and return vents open, unobstructed, and supported by a clear return path.
  • Outdoor unit: free of leaves, weeds, and other debris, with manufacturer-specified clearance.
  • Drainage: no standing water or repeated condensate leaks.
  • Service: professional inspection at least annually.
  • Safety: no homeowner refrigerant charging, electrical-compartment work, or disassembly-based coil cleaning.

When to call a qualified technician immediately

Arrange service if the heat pump cannot hold the set temperature after filter and airflow checks, the outdoor unit never starts, ice returns, condensate leaks, a breaker trips repeatedly, refrigerant lines are damaged, or unusual smells and noises appear. Give the technician the model number, recent filter-change date, thermostat mode and setpoint, symptoms, and any error code. That information can shorten diagnosis without requiring you to open hazardous compartments.
