Disconnect surface loads, let the battery stabilize, and measure open-circuit voltage. For a 12-volt battery, Caterpillar’s procedure calls for at least 12.45 volts. If the battery is charged and physically sound, apply a load equal to one-half of its rated cold cranking amps (CCA) for 15 seconds; 9.5 volts or higher during that test indicates a good 12-volt battery under Caterpillar’s procedure. Komatsu uses the same half-CCA, 15-second method but requires temperature-specific pass limits from the machine’s chart.
Never charge or jump-start a battery with frozen electrolyte. Warm and inspect it according to the manufacturer’s procedure first. A fully charged, warm battery, approved engine heaters, correct winter lubricants and disciplined storage prevent most overnight failures.

Why freezing weather exposes weak batteries
Low temperature reduces the chemical activity that produces starting current while increasing the engine torque required to turn thickened oil. Caterpillar notes that cold weather can require nearly twice as many cranking amps to turn an engine over. A battery that starts reliably in mild weather can therefore fail its first winter start even when its voltage looked acceptable the day before.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFreezing also raises the cost of neglect. A battery left at a low state of charge has a more dilute electrolyte, which freezes more readily. Ice expansion can crack the case, damage plates and create an unsafe short. Treat a winter battery check as both an electrical test and a cold-weather safety inspection.

Tools, information and safety gear
Gather the items below before testing. Use the machine manual for battery arrangement, disconnect procedures and temperature limits; heavy equipment may use multiple 12-volt batteries or a higher-voltage system.
- A digital voltmeter capable of reading tenths or hundredths of a volt.
- A carbon-pile or electronic load tester that can be set to one-half of the battery’s marked CCA.
- A charger approved for the battery’s chemistry and voltage, preferably with a controlled slow-charge mode.
- Eye protection, acid-resistant gloves and clean tools with insulated handles.
- A battery warmer or approved heater blanket for severe cold, if the machine and battery manufacturer permit it.
- A hydrometer only when the battery is a serviceable flooded design. It is not a universal test for sealed AGM or gel batteries.
- The battery label, date code and the machine’s current service manual.
Do not guess a CCA rating from battery size. Read the rating on the case or in the parts information. If several batteries are connected together, follow the manufacturer’s sequence; do not invent a pass voltage for the complete bank.
Inspect before connecting a tester
1. Confirm the battery is safe to test
Turn the machine off, park securely and isolate the starting circuit as the manual directs. Stop immediately if the case is swollen, cracked, leaking or visibly iced. A damaged or frozen battery must not be placed on a charger or connected to an alternate starting source.

2. Check the installation
Look for loose or corroded terminals, damaged cables, missing hold-downs and rubbed insulation. Clean corrosion using the approved method while wearing eye protection. A high-resistance connection can produce a slow crank that resembles a weak battery, and a loose hold-down can damage the case through vibration.

3. Identify temperature and chemistry
Record the battery temperature, chemistry, voltage system and date code. Temperature matters to the load-test decision: Komatsu’s procedure uses temperature-specific pass thresholds. If your manual provides a chart, use the value for the battery’s actual temperature rather than applying a generic 9.5-volt rule.
Step 1: Measure open-circuit voltage
- Switch off lights, controllers and accessories. Disconnect surface loads if the machine procedure requires it.
- Allow the battery to rest until its voltage has stabilized according to the machine manual. Measuring immediately after charging or cranking can capture a misleading surface charge.
- Set the meter to DC volts. Touch the positive probe to the positive post and the negative probe to the negative post, not to a painted hold-down or a corroded clamp.
- Record voltage, battery temperature and date code. A written trend is more useful than a single reading when diagnosing an intermittent overnight drain.
For a 12-volt battery, Caterpillar’s procedure specifies a minimum open-circuit reading of 12.45 volts. That is a screening value, not proof that the battery can deliver its rated starting current. A battery can show adequate resting voltage and still collapse under load, so continue to the controlled load test when the battery is charged, warm enough for the procedure and free of damage.
Do not apply the 12.45-volt or 9.5-volt figures to a 24-volt system as if they were doubled automatically. Test individual batteries or the complete system exactly as the equipment manufacturer specifies.

Step 2: Perform the half-CCA load test
Set the correct load
Find the battery’s CCA rating and set the tester to one-half of that number. For example, a battery marked 1,000 CCA receives a 500-amp test load. Use the rating and test duration in the manual if they differ from this general procedure.

What a failed test means
Low open-circuit voltage
A reading below the manufacturer’s minimum usually means the battery is discharged, has been subjected to a parasitic draw or has lost capacity. Recharge it with a chemistry-compatible, voltage-limited charger when the battery is not frozen or damaged. After charging, allow the battery to stabilize and repeat the open-circuit and load tests.
Good voltage, failed load
This pattern indicates inadequate starting capacity even though surface voltage appears normal. Recharge and retest once. If it fails again at the correct temperature and load, replace the battery or have an authorized service facility evaluate it; do not keep compensating with repeated jump-starts.

Frozen, discharged or cold-soaked batteries
Never charge or jump-start frozen electrolyte
Caterpillar warns not to charge a frozen battery. Komatsu likewise states that frozen electrolyte must not be charged or started with an alternate power source. Charging or applying starting current to ice-damaged cells can cause case rupture, venting or an internal short.
Safe recovery sequence
- Disconnect the battery according to the machine manual and move it to a protected area if that can be done safely.
- Allow it to warm naturally or with the manufacturer-approved warming procedure. Do not use an open flame, torch or improvised heat source.
- Inspect the case, cover, vents, posts and electrolyte area for cracks, bulging or leakage after thawing.
- If damage is present, isolate the battery for approved disposal or service. Do not attempt charging.
- If the battery is intact and the manufacturer permits recovery, use a chemistry-compatible slow charger, then repeat the resting-voltage and temperature-appropriate load tests.
Caterpillar prefers slow charging because fast charging can overheat a battery. A maintainer or tender is appropriate for storage only when both the charger and battery manufacturers permit continuous connection.

Warm the battery and engine
Use an approved battery warmer in severe cold and the machine’s block or oil heater to reduce the torque required at startup. Position, duty cycle and connection requirements belong to the machine manual. A heater does not repair a weak battery; it preserves available cranking power and improves oil flow.
Use winter fluids and verify coolant protection
Install the oil and lubricants specified for the expected temperature. Check coolant freeze point with a hydrometer where the cooling-system procedure allows it. Frozen coolant or excessively thick oil can produce a no-start that is wrongly blamed on the battery.

- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete

Control cranking time
Limit each cranking attempt to 30 seconds, then allow the starter and cables to cool before trying again, following the machine’s specified interval. Repeated long attempts can overheat starter components and drain a battery that was otherwise serviceable.
Warm before loading
Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature before loading or demanding full hydraulic performance. Inspect terminals and cables at each shift change and correct looseness or corrosion promptly.
Avoid unapproved starting fluid
Do not substitute starting fluid unless the engine has a factory-approved automatic system. Caterpillar warns that misuse can cause fire, personal injury or engine damage. Follow the engine’s cold-start system instead.
Winter storage in an unheated area
Remove or isolate the battery
For equipment stored where temperatures can fall below freezing, Caterpillar recommends removing the battery and storing it indoors at room temperature or otherwise above freezing. A cool, dry location around 40–50°F (5–10°C) is identified as ideal. For storage of four weeks or longer, disconnect the cables as directed by the machine procedure.
Maintain charge without overcharging
Do not leave a battery at a low state of charge. A discharged electrolyte freezes more readily and can crack the case. Use a maintainer only if its voltage, chemistry and continuous-use approval match the battery manufacturer’s instructions. Check the connection periodically rather than assuming a tender will overcome a defective battery.
Store correctly
- Keep batteries upright, dry and protected from terminal shorting.
- Polypropylene cases may be placed on concrete because the case material provides insulation, but follow the manufacturer’s stacking and height limits.
- Keep date-coded inventory in rotation so older batteries are used first.
- Protect terminals from tools, metal shelving and loose parts that could bridge the posts.
Daily freezing-weather checklist
- Inspect the case, terminals, cables and hold-downs; clean corrosion by the approved method and wear eye protection.
- After the battery has rested, measure and record open-circuit voltage, temperature and date code.
- If the battery is charged, intact and within the permitted temperature range, perform the manufacturer’s half-CCA, 15-second load test.
- If it fails, recharge with a chemistry-compatible, voltage-limited charger when permitted, then retest.
- Before starting, confirm the battery is warm enough for the machine procedure and connect approved block, oil or battery heaters.
- Limit cranking to 30 seconds per attempt and allow starter components to cool.
- At shutdown, drain water separators, fill the fuel tank and complete the machine’s cold-weather storage steps so fuel or coolant problems do not mimic a battery failure.
Choosing the right battery-testing and winter tools
| Tool | Use it for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 12V heavy-duty battery load tester | Controlled half-CCA, 15-second testing required by the cited manufacturer procedures | Set the load from the battery’s actual CCA rating and use the temperature-appropriate pass value |
| 12V battery maintainer or tender | Preventing discharge during extended storage | Continuous connection is allowed only when the battery and charger manufacturers approve it |
| 12V battery warmer or heater blanket | Keeping a battery warm during severe cold | Use only an approved model and installation for the machine |
| Battery electrolyte hydrometer | Checking specific gravity in serviceable flooded batteries | Not a universal tool for sealed AGM or gel batteries |
| Digital voltmeter | Resting-voltage checks and connection troubleshooting | Cannot replace a controlled load test |
When to escalate to a dealer or qualified technician
Arrange machine-specific service when the battery repeatedly fails after a correct recharge, the case or cables are damaged, the machine has an unexplained overnight draw, or the manufacturer’s temperature chart and disconnect procedure are unavailable. Authorized dealers can identify the correct battery, test the charging system and supply machine-approved components. Do not bypass electronic disconnect instructions or connect an alternate power source merely because a machine is difficult to access.
