Start with the appliance’s data plate and exact model number. The label or the manufacturer’s manual should state the fuel or energy source and electrical requirements. A cord does not prove that an appliance is electrically heated: gas dryers, furnaces and other combustion appliances can use electricity for motors, controls, fans or blowers while gas supplies the heat.
Why “gas or electric” is not always a simple choice
An appliance can use more than one energy source for different jobs. The most useful distinction is between the appliance’s primary heat or operating source and the electricity needed to run its controls or moving parts.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A gas clothes dryer uses gas for heat, while electric motors drive the drum and blower.
- A furnace may use electricity alone, or electricity together with natural gas, propane or home heating oil.
- A water heater may be gas-fired, electric-resistance or heat-pump equipment.
- A cord, electrical circuit or control panel therefore identifies an electrical connection, not necessarily the fuel that performs the main heating task.
Because configurations differ by model and jurisdiction, identify the particular appliance rather than relying on its category or appearance. “Uses electricity” can mean that a unit needs a receptacle for controls, ignition or a fan; “electric appliance” may instead mean that electricity supplies the principal heat. Those are different questions.
Before you inspect: keep the check documentary
Have a flashlight, a phone or camera for a readable label, and the property or equipment records available. You do not need an outlet tester, electrical meter, gas detector or other test instrument to identify the intended fuel. A technical instrument can show that a circuit or gas line is present, but it cannot reliably tell you how the manufacturer designed the appliance to operate.

Work from a safe standing position. Do not kneel behind a range, reach around a burner, remove an access cover or pull a heavy appliance out of a cabinet simply to find a label. If the appliance is hot, damaged, wet, disconnected or giving off an odor, leave it alone and contact the appropriate building manager, utility or qualified technician.
The safe identification workflow
Use this sequence when checking an appliance in a home, rental property, construction project or handover inspection. It is designed to avoid moving equipment, opening panels or disturbing fuel connections.
- Locate the data plate or product label. Check the appliance body, door frame and other readily accessible areas. Depending on the product, it may be on a side panel, behind a door, inside a cabinet opening or on the rear documentation pouch. If the label is hard to read, look for the same information in the owner’s manual or installation documentation rather than dismantling anything.
- Record the exact model number. Include the full model and, where shown, the serial number, fuel designation and electrical rating. A partial model number can lead to the wrong manual, especially when a manufacturer sells visually similar gas and electric versions.
- Read the stated energy wording. Look for terms such as natural gas, propane, gas, electric, electricity or heat pump. Also note phrases such as input, heating source, fuel type or energy source. Some labels emphasize performance and model information rather than presenting one plainly named fuel, so use the manual when the plate is not explicit.
- Observe only connections that are already visible and accessible. A gas connection can support a gas identification, and an electrical cord or circuit confirms that electricity is supplied. Neither observation should override the model documentation. Do not trace a pipe into a wall or ceiling, and do not assume an unused connector proves that the appliance is currently configured for that fuel.
- Resolve conflicting clues with the model documentation. Search the manufacturer’s manual using the exact model number or ask the manufacturer, property manager or installer. Mixed gas-and-electric designs are normal for some appliance types, and a replacement part or conversion may have changed the visible arrangement.
- Stop if verification would require moving or opening the appliance. Do not pull equipment away from a wall, remove panels, disconnect a line or test fuel by lighting or operating an unfamiliar appliance.
How to read the data plate and manual
Fields that identify the appliance
Look for the manufacturer or trade name, model information, stated fuel or energy source, electrical supply type and appliance category. These are the kinds of details identified in Great Britain’s gas-appliance safety guidance. Exact label fields and placement vary by country, product category and manufacturer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe electrical portion may show a voltage, frequency, phase or other supply information. It may also list amperage, a required circuit or a warning to use a particular receptacle. Treat it as an electrical requirement, not proof that electricity is the primary heat source. A gas appliance can require a substantial electrical connection for its motor, ignition, controls or air-moving equipment.
A manual may use technical terms instead of a simple “gas” or “electric” heading. Look for installation sections that name the approved fuel, appliance input, gas pressure, electrical supply, venting method or conversion kit. Those specifications describe the model’s permitted configuration; they are not instructions to alter it yourself.
Use the manual when the label is ambiguous
The manual should identify the approved fuel, connection arrangement and model-specific installation requirements. Match the manual’s model number to the plate before relying on it. Similar-looking appliances can have different fuel versions, and a manual for a related model may not apply.
If the manufacturer offers several revisions, match the serial-number range or production date where the manual asks for it. Save the document with the inspection record and note the page that identifies the fuel. If an online search returns several near matches, do not select one based only on a similar appearance.

Keep the evidence with the project record
For construction closeout, maintenance files or a property handover, photograph the readable plate without removing any cover and record the model number in the asset schedule. Retain the matching manual or manufacturer document. This prevents a future technician or occupant from having to infer the fuel from a hidden connection.
Record uncertainty explicitly. For example, note that the electrical rating was visible but the fuel wording required confirmation from the manufacturer. A clear “verified by model manual” entry is more useful than a guess based on a cord or vent.
What visible pipes, vents and cords can tell you
A cord is not a conclusive test
Electricity may power a gas appliance’s controls, motor, blower, fan or ignition. The federal definition of a gas clothes dryer, for example, treats gas as the heat source while electric motors drive the drum and blower. A plug therefore confirms that electricity is present, but it does not establish electric heat.
Conversely, an electric appliance may have no ordinary plug visible if it is hard-wired to a circuit. The absence of a cord is not proof that the appliance is gas, and a cord is not proof that it is electrically heated. The model record has priority in both cases.

A gas line is supporting evidence
An accessible gas connection is a useful clue, especially when it agrees with the data plate or manual. It is not a substitute for model identification. Connections may be concealed, altered or associated with equipment that has more than one energy source. A capped or unused line also does not establish that the appliance is approved for gas.
Do not loosen a fitting, operate a shutoff valve or use smell as an identification method. If you suspect a leak, leave the area and follow local emergency and utility procedures rather than continuing an inspection.
Vent pipes need context
Some direct-vent combustion equipment has separate pipes for combustion air and exhaust. That arrangement can support the conclusion that the equipment burns fuel, but vent styles are not universal and pipes may be hidden. Do not classify an appliance from venting alone.
A vent can belong to another appliance, and a shared or enclosed chase can make the arrangement look different from the manufacturer’s diagram. Use the manual to determine what the particular pipes serve. Never block, cap or modify a vent to test a theory.

Clothes dryers
For a gas dryer, gas supplies the heat and electric motors drive the drum and blower. This is the clearest example of why “it has a plug” is not enough. Check the plate and manual for the exact model’s fuel designation and connection requirements before arranging installation or replacement.
Do not infer the fuel from the cycle selector, drum light or control display. Those functions are electrical on many models regardless of the heat source. A dryer that has been converted, relocated or disconnected should be verified from its model documentation before reconnection.
Furnaces
Consumer furnace descriptions from the U.S. Department of Energy include electric-only furnaces and systems that use electricity together with natural gas, propane or home heating oil. The blower, thermostat wiring or control board cannot establish the heat fuel. Identify the model and its approved fuel from the plate and documentation.
Some systems have separate indoor and outdoor components, so the label on a nearby cabinet may not identify the complete heating system. Match each component’s model information and ask the installer or property manager when the equipment is part of a larger packaged system.

Water heaters
Water heaters are available as gas, electric and heat-pump systems. A gas or propane direct-vent unit may have separate combustion-air and exhaust pipes, but the vent arrangement is only corroborating evidence. Confirm the specific model before planning fuel, electrical or vent work.
A heat-pump water heater necessarily uses electricity to move heat, while a gas unit may still need electricity for controls, ignition or a fan. Do not classify a tank by its shape, insulation jacket or nearby piping; those features occur across multiple designs.
Ranges and cooking appliances
A visible flame indicates that a gas burner is operating, but using a flame as an identification test is unsafe and inadequate for an unknown, unconnected or unfamiliar appliance. Rely on the data plate and manual instead. The presence of electric controls, lights or an oven element also does not by itself describe the fuel for every function.

Combination ranges can use gas for surface burners and electricity for an oven, or the reverse arrangement in another model. Treat each function according to the manufacturer’s stated configuration, not the appearance of one burner or element.

Do not infer fuel type from appearance or from the existence of an electrical cord. Check the particular model’s plate and documentation. For these products, the model record is more reliable than a visual guess about how the appliance operates.
These appliances commonly use electricity for motors, pumps, controls or refrigeration, but the article’s identification rule still applies: verify the exact model and do not generalize from a neighboring appliance or a shared utility connection.
Comparison: what each clue can and cannot establish
| Clue or appliance | Primary source or configuration established by the cited guidance | Can electricity also be required? | Most authoritative way to identify the unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas clothes dryer | Gas supplies heat; electric motors drive the drum and blower. | Yes, for the motors and other electrical functions. | Exact model data plate and manual. |
| Furnace | Electric-only, or electricity used with natural gas, propane or home heating oil. | Yes; the configuration depends on the model. | Exact model data plate and manufacturer documentation. |
| Water heater | Gas, electric or heat-pump type. | Yes for electric and heat-pump types; a gas model may also use electricity for controls or related equipment. | Exact model data plate and manual. |
| Direct-vent combustion equipment | May use separate combustion-air and exhaust pipes. | May have electrical components, depending on the model. | Model documentation; pipes are supporting evidence only. |
| Range or cooking appliance | Fuel cannot be safely established by trying to light an unfamiliar unit. | Electrical controls or elements may coexist with another fuel. | Data plate and manual. |
| Refrigerator, washer or dishwasher | Appearance and a cord do not establish the fuel or operating configuration. | An electrical connection may be required. | Particular model’s plate and documentation. |
Labeling differs by country
Do not assume that a label rule from one country applies everywhere. The data-plate details cited in Great Britain’s gas-appliance guidance are UK-specific. U.S. Department of Energy descriptions and federal appliance definitions are U.S.-specific. Natural Resources Canada’s EnerGuide material provides Canadian energy-label and model context. The practical method is shared across these settings—identify the exact model and read its documentation—but the label format, required fields and terminology can differ.
A Canadian EnerGuide label or another national efficiency label may emphasize energy performance and model identity rather than plainly stating “gas” or “electric.” That information can still help you locate the correct manufacturer record, but do not treat an efficiency label as a replacement for installation specifications.
When working on a property in another jurisdiction, use the local installation rules and the manufacturer’s documentation for that model. If the plate does not plainly state the fuel, the jurisdiction’s utility, building official, property manager or a qualified appliance technician can help interpret it.
When to stop and get qualified help
Stop the inspection and ask for assistance when any of these conditions applies:
- The data plate is missing, damaged or unreadable.
- The model number is incomplete or the available manual does not match it exactly.
- Connections or vents are concealed and checking them would require moving the appliance.
- You would need to remove a panel, disconnect a pipe or alter wiring to continue.
- The appliance is unfamiliar, unconnected, has been modified or shows signs of damage.
- Visible clues conflict with the plate or manual.
- You smell gas, see scorching, find damaged insulation or observe water near electrical parts.
Contact the property manager, manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician. Do not disconnect a gas line, open combustion equipment or attempt to identify fuel by lighting or operating the appliance. A basic cord check is appropriate only as a safety observation; it is not a technical fuel test.
Common identification mistakes
“It has a plug, so it is electric.”
This fails for gas dryers and other equipment in which electricity runs motors, controls or blowers. Classify the heating source from the model documentation.
“There is a pipe, so it must be gas.”
A pipe can be useful supporting evidence, but concealed, modified or combination systems make visual classification unreliable. Confirm the model.
“All furnaces or water heaters work the same way.”
Furnaces include electric-only and fuel-plus-electric configurations, while water heaters include gas, electric and heat-pump types. The category narrows the possibilities; it does not identify the installed unit.

“The label rules I know apply to every country.”
Required fields and terminology vary. Use local guidance and the manufacturer’s documentation rather than transferring a foreign label assumption to the project.
“I can test it by turning it on.”
Operating an unknown or unconnected appliance can create electrical, combustion or gas-safety hazards. Identification should be documentary first, not an experiment.

For each appliance, add these items to the inspection or handover record:
- Manufacturer or trade name.
- Complete model number and, where available, serial number.
- Fuel or energy-source wording from the plate or manual.
- Electrical supply information shown on the plate.
- Whether the model documentation describes a mixed configuration.
- Location of the plate and the document used to verify the model.
- Any visible gas connection, electrical connection or venting noted without moving or opening the equipment.
- Name of the person or organization consulted if the identification required clarification.
- Date of verification and a photograph or file reference for the supporting document.
This record gives the next installer or occupant a traceable answer without encouraging unsafe inspection. It also separates confirmed facts—such as a model number—from observations that are only clues, such as a nearby cord or pipe.
Frequently asked questions
Does a plug mean an appliance is electric?
No. A gas appliance can need electricity for its motor, controls, ignition, fan or blower. Use the data plate and exact model manual to identify the primary heat source.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I tell from the gas pipe alone?
A visible, accessible gas connection is supporting evidence, not a universal test. It may be concealed, modified or part of a combination system. Do not loosen or operate the connection to investigate.
Where is the data plate usually located?
Locations vary. Check the appliance body, door frame and other accessible areas, then consult the manual or manufacturer if it cannot be found. Do not remove panels or move heavy equipment just to reach it.
What if the plate says only voltage and amperage?
Those figures identify the electrical supply requirement, not necessarily the heating fuel. Record the model number and use the matching manual or contact the manufacturer for the approved energy source.
Are furnaces always gas?
No. U.S. Department of Energy consumer descriptions include electric-only furnaces and systems using electricity with natural gas, propane or home heating oil. The blower and thermostat wiring do not identify the fuel.
Are water heaters always either gas or electric?
No. Water heaters may be gas, electric-resistance or heat-pump systems. A gas model can still use electricity for controls or related equipment.

Can I light a burner to find out?
Do not operate or light an unfamiliar, unconnected or possibly modified appliance as an identification test. Use documentary identification and qualified help instead.
What should I do when visual clues conflict?
Stop and match the full model number to the manufacturer’s documentation. If the conflict remains, ask the manufacturer, property manager, installer or qualified appliance technician.
Bottom line
Read the data plate, match the exact model to its manual and treat cords, pipes and vents only as supporting clues. Gas appliances can need electricity, and some equipment combines energy sources. If the documentation is missing or checking the connections would involve moving, opening or disconnecting anything, stop and obtain qualified help.
