Keep that container in a cool, dark, dry closet away from heat and sunlight, then inspect it during storage. Use a breathable cotton bag only when the sweater is delicate and the storage area has low pest risk.
This approach addresses the three common failures separately: folding supports the sweater’s shape, darkness and stable conditions protect color and fibers, and clean garments in sealed containment deny clothes moths the food and access they need.

Why seasonal storage damages sweaters
Knitted fabric behaves differently from a woven shirt. Its loops can lengthen under the sweater’s own weight, especially when it hangs for months. A hanger can leave shoulder points, stretch the neck and make sleeves appear longer. Tight compression creates a different problem: a vacuum bag or overfilled box can flatten the loft, distort cables and set creases that are difficult to remove.
Light, particularly ultraviolet light, breaks down textile fibers and fades dyes. Radiators, sunny windows, attics and hot cupboards accelerate that damage. Moisture is equally troublesome: a sweater packed before it is fully dry can develop mildew, while a damp basement supplies the humidity that moths and mold prefer.

Clothes-moth larvae feed on wool and other keratin-containing animal fibers. The Canadian Conservation Institute identifies moth and carpet-beetle larvae as especially damaging because they perforate and consume these fibers. The Woolmark Company’s sweater-care guide estimates that one moth may lay about 100 eggs; that is an industry-guide estimate rather than a universal field measurement, but it explains why a small adult-moth sighting deserves attention.
Prepare every sweater before packing
Read the care label first
The label determines whether the garment can be washed, which water temperature and cycle are allowed, and whether it requires professional dry-cleaning. Do not substitute a familiar routine for the label: an item marked “dry clean only” may felt, shrink or lose its finish in a home washer, while a washable knit can be unnecessarily exposed to solvent cleaning.
Wash or dry-clean according to the label
| Label instruction | What to do before storage | Main risk if ignored |
|---|---|---|
| Machine- or hand-washable | Use the stated temperature, detergent and cycle; support the wet sweater while moving it and dry it as the label directs. | Heat, agitation or unsupported wet weight can cause felting, stretching or shrinkage. |
| Dry-clean only | Use a cleaner experienced with the garment’s fiber and construction; remove the sweater from any cleaner’s plastic covering when you get home. | Water-based cleaning can distort a non-washable finish, and sealed plastic can retain moisture. |
| Label missing or unreadable | Treat the piece as delicate: ask the maker or a qualified cleaner for fiber-specific advice rather than guessing. | An irreversible cleaning error can be more damaging than a season of storage. |
Cleaning is not cosmetic. Warwickshire County Council’s guidance, published 14 April 2025, advises cleaning wool jumpers before summer storage, and Pendleton’s current care guidance warns that even invisible body oils attract moths. Food, perspiration, skin oils and drink residue provide the soiling moth larvae seek.
Dry it completely
After washing, press out water without twisting, then use the drying method on the label. Before packing, check cuffs, seams, pockets, ribbing and any thick cable-knit sections; these areas can hold moisture after the surface feels dry. A cool, dry room with air movement is safer than a radiator or direct sun. Never seal a sweater that feels cool and damp in a fold.

Pendleton states that improper washing can cause 3–6 inches of shrinkage, with the amount increasing after repeated washings, for garments or blankets that are not labeled washable. That is product-care guidance, not a prediction for every sweater, but it is a useful reason to avoid “just one quick wash” when the label does not permit it.
Fold flat instead of hanging
Use a clean, flat surface larger than the sweater. Folding distributes the knit’s weight across the whole garment instead of concentrating it at the shoulders.
- Lay the fully dry sweater face down and smooth the body without pulling the fabric lengthwise.
- Fold each sleeve inward, keeping the cuff aligned with the lower edge or side seam rather than letting it dangle.
- Bring the left and right sides toward the center so the shoulders and side seams remain straight.
- Fold from the bottom upward in half or in thirds, choosing the number of folds that fits the container without forcing the knit.
- Place the folded sweater in the container with no heavy item on top and enough room to lift it out without dragging.
Woolmark’s care guidance summarizes the reason: folding, rather than hanging, helps a garment retain its shape while in storage. Refold along different lines when practical for long-term storage so one crease does not become permanently sharp.
Use acid-free tissue at the folds
Insert colorless, acid-free tissue between major folds and around the sweater. The tissue cushions raised cables, embroidery and hardware, reduces rubbing between layers and helps limit yellowing. Woolmark specifically notes its value in preventing snagging on zippers or neighboring garments.

Use enough tissue to separate surfaces, not so much that the sweater is forced into a tight bundle. Colored tissue, newspaper and printed packing paper can transfer dye or acidic compounds. Replace tissue that becomes damp, dirty or crushed.
Choose the container for the actual pest risk
| Container | Moth exclusion | Moisture management | Compression and shape risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rigid box with a tight-fitting lid | Strongest option when clean and properly closed; blocks moth access. | Good only when the sweater and box are completely dry; open and air the contents if condensation or dampness appears. | Low if the box is roomy and not overfilled; do not force the lid down. | Seasonal storage where moth exclusion is the priority. |
| Other airtight, non-compressive container | Also prevents access when the seal remains intact. | Requires dry contents and a dry storage room because trapped moisture cannot escape. | Low when the container allows the sweater to lie naturally. | Clean, dry knits in a monitored closet with known moth activity. |
| Breathable cotton sweater bag | Does not reliably block moths. | Allows airflow and is gentler for delicate garments in a clean, low-pest area. | Low if the bag is not stuffed or hung by the sweater. | Delicate pieces when airflow matters more than a sealed pest barrier. |
| Ordinary dry-cleaner plastic garment bag | Not a dependable moth barrier. | Can trap moisture and condensation. | Usually low, but the plastic offers no fiber protection from light. | Short transport only; remove it for seasonal storage. |
| Vacuum-compression bag | Sealing does not offset the storage damage caused by compression. | Traps any residual dampness. | High: tight pressure can deform a knit and set hard-to-remove creases. | Do not use for holiday sweaters. |
Household wool-care advice differs on whether “breathable” or airtight should be the default. The practical resolution is conditional: choose a clean, dry, rigid or otherwise airtight container when excluding moths is the main concern; choose breathable cotton for a delicate sweater in a clean, low-pest space that you can monitor.
Set up the storage location
- Choose darkness: an interior closet or closed cabinet protects dyes and fibers from UV exposure.
- Stay away from heat: leave clearance from radiators, heating pipes, boilers and warm appliance cupboards.
- Avoid damp zones: do not use an attic with large temperature swings or a basement with condensation unless the area is demonstrably dry and stable.
- Allow access: boxes should be reachable for inspection without being crushed under other storage.
- Keep the floor clear: raising containers off a potentially damp floor gives an early warning if water enters the room.
The Smithsonian Institution’s antique-textile FAQ gives a conservation target of 40–50% relative humidity and 18–21°C. That range is intended for historic textiles, not a mandatory household setting for ordinary sweaters. For seasonal clothing, the useful principle is a cool, dry, stable room without condensation or rapid swings.

Inspect for evidence
Check folded edges, underarms, collars, cuffs and seams periodically. Look for irregular holes, silky webbing, gritty droppings, shed cases, larvae, moisture or adult moths. Finding one damaged area does not identify the species by itself, so isolate the garment and inspect nearby wool, fur, feathers and other animal-fiber items rather than returning it to the box.
Use traps as monitors
Pheromone traps can reveal adult-moth activity, but they do not replace laundering or dry-cleaning, sealed containment and inspection. Place them where they can be checked and replaced according to their label; a trap with no catch does not prove that larvae are absent.
The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC), updated 1 May 2026, advises storing cleaned items inside airtight containers and continuing to monitor for moth signs. This pairing matters: a sealed box limits new access, while inspection catches a problem that was already present.

Decide whether a deterrent is worthwhile
| Option | What it can do | Limitations and safe practice |
|---|---|---|
| No added deterrent | Relies on the controls with the clearest practical benefit: cleaning, complete drying, inspection and appropriate containment. | Requires consistent monitoring, especially in a room with a past infestation. |
| Cedar blocks or sachets | Add a scent some owners find convenient. | Effectiveness is limited and recommendations vary. Canada.ca and Pendleton both describe cedar or herbal products as limited; do not treat them as a sealed-storage substitute. |
| Lavender or other herbal products | Optional fragrance in a storage area. | Evidence for reliable moth control is uncertain; keep any product from direct contact with light-colored or delicate fabric and follow its instructions. |
| Mothballs | Pesticide vapors can kill moths when used correctly. | NPIC says use them only in airtight containers and exactly as the label directs. The gases can harm people and pets, so never scatter mothballs in an open closet or living area. |
Because cedar and herbal recommendations conflict, treat them as optional additions rather than guarantees. Sealed, non-compressive storage and clean fabric remain the primary controls.

A practical end-of-season packing sequence
- Empty the sweater pockets and remove brooches, pins and detachable decorations that could snag the knit.
- Read the care label and choose the permitted wash or dry-cleaning method.
- Clean visible spills and body-oil areas; do not pack a “probably clean” sweater after a season of wear.
- Dry the garment fully, including thick seams, ribbing and folded cuffs.
- Vacuum and wipe the storage shelf or box; let the area dry before loading it.
- Fold the sweater face down using the flat-fold sequence and add acid-free tissue between folds.
- Select a roomy rigid lidded or airtight container if moth exclusion is important; otherwise use a breathable cotton bag for a delicate item in a low-pest environment.
- Label the container with the garment type and packing date so you can rotate inspections without repeatedly opening every box.
- Store it in a dark, cool, dry location away from heat, sun, attics and damp basements.
- Set a reminder to inspect the container and nearby clothing during the storage period.
What to do when something goes wrong
The sweater is stretched at the shoulders
Remove it from the hanger and stop pulling it into shape while dry. Follow the label’s permitted washing or blocking method; if the label does not provide one, ask a qualified cleaner or the maker. Store it folded after it has been restored as far as the fiber allows.
You find a damp smell or condensation
Take the sweater and tissue out of the container in a dry room. Do not reseal it until every layer is dry and the container has been cleaned and dried. Check the closet for leaks, condensation and poor air movement; moving the box alone will not solve a damp room.
There are new holes, webbing or cases
Isolate the affected item in a closed container and inspect adjacent animal-fiber garments. Clean items before returning them to storage, continue monitoring with an appropriate trap, and follow local pest-control guidance for treatment. Do not rely on cedar scent or an open mothball placement.
The color has faded
Once dye has been damaged by light it cannot generally be restored by storage changes. Move remaining sweaters to a dark cabinet, avoid transparent containers in sunlight and keep future boxes away from windows and heat sources.
The sweater has hard compression creases
Do not iron directly or pull aggressively. Use only the label-approved method for gentle reshaping and then replace the vacuum bag with a roomy container. Tissue can soften future fold contact, but it cannot undo every set crease.
Quick Recap
Common storage mistakes to avoid
- Hanging a heavy knit from spring to autumn.
- Sealing a sweater before checking the cuffs and seams for residual dampness.
