Moisture changes are the main cause of checking, splitting, staining, decay and warpage. Lumber that is visibly moldy, water-damaged, unstable or badly distorted should be removed from service rather than installed.

Why moisture control prevents warping
Wood is hygroscopic: it takes on moisture from damp air and releases moisture into drier air. As its moisture content changes, wood swells and shrinks. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory explains that rapid and uneven moisture changes can cause checking and warpage. A board that dries faster on one face, one edge or one end can cup, bow, twist or split even when the stack initially looked straight.

Kiln drying does not make lumber permanently dry. USDA guidance says kiln-dried lumber at 12 percent moisture or less can be stored outdoors only for a short time and still needs protection from rain. In cool, damp weather, kiln-dried boards tend to regain moisture. A solid pile slows evaporation, so water that enters from rain or a wet slab can remain trapped in the center.
The storage objective is therefore balanced: stop liquid water from entering, keep the stack off damp surfaces, and allow air to move around the boards so any absorbed moisture can leave gradually and evenly.
Choose the right storage arrangement
Match the storage method to the lumber’s moisture condition, the time it will remain stored and whether it still needs to dry.

| Arrangement | Rain protection | Airflow and drying | Drainage and ground clearance | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roofed shed or covered, dry enclosure | Continuous protection from direct rain | Can provide controlled ventilation without repeated tarp handling | Requires a dry, level floor and elevated supports | Storage lasting more than a short period; kiln-dried or finish-grade lumber | Condensation or a damp floor if the enclosure is not ventilated or drained |
| Outdoor stickered stack under a roof or lumber tarp | Protects the top and sides when the cover is properly fitted | Good when side gaps remain open and stickers are aligned | Needs concrete, asphalt or another surface where water cannot pool | Temporary or medium-term site storage when a shed is unavailable | Rain entry, wind movement, ground contact or trapped condensation |
| Solid pile | Must be fully protected from water infiltration | Limited; water in the center evaporates slowly | Still needs elevated, level supports | Lumber already below about 20 percent moisture when no further drying is desired | Poor choice for wet lumber that still needs to dry; hidden moisture and decay |
A roofed shed is the most forgiving option for long storage because it removes repeated tarp installation and reduces exposure to wind-driven rain. If outdoor storage is unavoidable, a stickered stack on a drained hard surface is preferable to a bundle left on grass, bare soil or a slab where water collects.

Build a dry, level foundation
The first boards should never touch soil, vegetation, standing water or a damp concrete slab. Soil transfers moisture directly into the bottom course, while a slab can wick or hold water after rain, washing or condensation. Choose concrete, asphalt or another firm surface that drains rather than pools.
Use solid sills, pallets or durable bearers to raise the package. The supports must be strong enough for the full load and broad enough that they will not punch into soft ground or become unstable. Set them on the same plane so the lumber is not forced to conform to a crooked base.
Before loading, check the foundation:
- It is level from side to side and end to end.
- It is solid and does not rock when the load is placed on it.
- Water has a path away from the stack.
- The lowest boards are clearly separated from the floor or ground.
- The support layout will line up with the stickers in every tier.
If a site changes from dry to wet weather, recheck the lowest supports. A pallet that was stable on compacted gravel can settle after rain, creating a twist in the entire pile.
Use stickers to keep layers straight
Stickers are straight, dry spacers placed between layers of boards. They create air passages and transfer the load downward. OSHA’s lumber-stacking guidance states: “Stickers must extend the full width of the package, be uniformly spaced and be aligned one above the other.” That alignment is critical: each sticker should sit directly over the support or sticker beneath it so the boards are not bent between offset bearing points.

There is no single authoritative sticker spacing that applies to every species, thickness, width, climate and storage duration. Select spacing appropriate to the board dimensions and load, using project specifications or advice from a qualified lumber professional when the material is unusually thin, heavy, long or valuable.
- Choose straight, dry spacers. Do not use damp, decayed or badly bowed pieces as stickers; they transfer their defects into the pile and can hold moisture against the boards.
- Run each sticker across the package. A short spacer that ends inside the stack leaves unsupported edges and creates concentrated loads.
- Keep the spacing uniform. Consistent bearing reduces the chance that one part of a board dries faster or sags more than another.
- Align every tier vertically. Mark the support lines on the first layer if necessary, then place each new sticker directly above the line below.
- Keep boards oriented consistently. Place boards flat unless the package design or manufacturer requires another arrangement, and keep the pile square as it rises.
When a layer contains different lengths, arrange the pieces so their ends do not create a large unsupported overhang. If long units must sit on a shorter package, add separators and supports that create a stable, self-supporting pile rather than allowing the long pieces to cantilever.
Stack for stability and safe access
A dry stack can still be dangerous if it leans, shifts or is too high to handle safely. OSHA requires lumber piles to be stable and self-supporting on level, solidly supported sills. For manually handled piles, the maximum height is 16 feet under 29 CFR 1926.250 (OSHA, 2019). That limit does not make every 16-foot pile safe; the practical height may be lower when boards are long, slippery, irregularly bundled or difficult to access.

- Keep unsupported overhangs to a minimum and correct them before adding more material.
- Leave working space so boards can be removed without climbing on an unstable stack.
- Do not stand beneath or pull from a leaning pile. Unload it from a safe position and rebuild the affected section.
- Keep forklifts, vehicles and foot traffic from striking the supports or lower courses.
If a stack shifts during a storm, stop access until the pile has been made stable. Moving a few boards from a leaning side is safer than trying to force the pile upright while it is loaded.

Cover lumber without trapping water
Cover the top and sides against rain, but do not wrap the pile so tightly that humid air and condensation cannot escape. A lumber tarp under a roof or a well-designed roofed shelter can work; the cover should not lie directly on wet boards.
- Pitch the cover. Give rain a path to run off instead of forming a pond on top of the stack.
- Protect the ends and upper sides. Wind-driven rain often enters through exposed ends even when the top is covered.
- Leave ventilation gaps. Open the lower sides enough for air movement while keeping the cover from flapping into the boards.
- Keep the cover clear of the lumber. Use a roof, battens or a frame so wet fabric does not rest against the stack and transfer water.
- Secure it for wind. Fasten the cover without blocking drainage or pulling the pile out of square.
PNNL recommends a dry covered area or tarps for site storage, and USDA warns that solid piles must be protected from rain. A tarp that sheds water but traps condensation is not a successful cover; inspect underneath after wet weather and adjust the side openings when conditions change.
Step-by-step storage procedure
- Classify the lumber. Note whether it is kiln-dried, air-dried, green or visibly wet, and identify whether it is framing stock, finish-grade material or a specialty product.
- Select the location. For storage longer than a short period, use a covered shed when possible. Otherwise choose a drained concrete, asphalt or similarly hard surface, away from runoff and vegetation.
- Prepare the foundation. Set level solid sills, pallets or durable bearers high enough to keep the lowest boards clear of ground and slab moisture.
- Lay out support lines. Position the base supports so they will coincide with the sticker lines through the entire stack.
- Place the first course. Keep boards square, distribute their weight over the supports and avoid unsupported ends.
- Add stickers. Use straight, dry spacers that extend the full package width. Keep them uniformly spaced and directly above the supports below.
- Build in stable tiers. Check the edges and corners after each layer. Correct a drifting or leaning tier immediately rather than compensating in the next one.
- Install weather protection. Cover the top and sides, pitch the cover for runoff, and leave side gaps for airflow.
- Record the condition. Note the storage date and any boards that arrived wet, stained or damaged so they can be rechecked before installation.
- Inspect after weather. After storms and during damp seasons, look for standing water, shifted covers, displaced stickers, mold, stain, bowed boards and new ground contact.
Inspect and maintain the stack
Inspection is not a one-time step. Rain, wind, settling and seasonal humidity can change a safe pile. Walk around the stack rather than checking only the top.
- Standing water: Remove the source, improve the pitch or drainage and dry the affected area. Do not allow water to remain on the cover or floor.
- Mold or dark stain: Isolate the affected boards and determine whether the material has visible water damage. PNNL advises not installing materials showing visible water damage or mold.
- Shifted stickers: Do not reach into a loaded, unstable tier. Unload enough material to reset the sticker line safely.
- Bow, cup or twist: Check for uneven support, offset stickers, one-sided wetting or a cover pressing on the boards. Correct the storage condition before deciding whether the board is usable.
- Ground or slab contact: Raise the stack again and inspect the lowest boards for staining, softening or decay.
- Leaning pile: Restrict access and rebuild the unstable section on a level foundation.
- Wet tarp underside: Increase ventilation, keep the fabric off the lumber and eliminate places where condensation can drip onto the boards.
Move visibly water-damaged or moldy material out of service. Cleaning or drying a board does not automatically restore its structural or finish suitability; follow the project’s material requirements and obtain professional evaluation when damage is uncertain.

Storage guidance for common lumber conditions
Kiln-dried framing lumber
Keep it under a roof whenever storage extends beyond a short period. If it must be outside, use an elevated stickered stack with full rain protection and open sides. Because kiln-dried boards readily regain moisture in cool, damp conditions, do not treat the kiln-dried label as permission to leave bundles uncovered.
Wet or green lumber
Wet lumber that still needs to dry should not be sealed in a solid pile. Use stickers, aligned supports and a cover that blocks rain while allowing air to move through the package. Expect drying to take time and monitor for uneven wetting, stain and warp.
Lumber already below about 20 percent moisture
A solid pile can be suitable when no further drying is desired, provided the pile is elevated and fully protected from water infiltration. It remains important to maintain stability and inspect for condensation or leaks because a solid pile releases moisture slowly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFinish-grade or appearance-sensitive boards
Use the most controlled environment available, preferably a dry, roofed enclosure. Small changes in support alignment or surface wetting can become visible defects, so keep the stack square, use clean stickers and avoid direct contact with wet covers.
Condition lumber before interior installation
Do not move boards directly from a wet outdoor stack into a closed wall, floor or ceiling assembly. Allow the lumber to reach a moisture condition appropriate to the building and climate, and verify it against the project specifications. The available guidance does not establish one universal target for every species, dimension, end use or region.
Before installation, inspect each piece for mold, stain, decay, checking, splitting, bow, cup and twist. Separate boards that need further drying or professional assessment. A moisture meter can help identify differences within a load, but the acceptable reading must come from the project requirements rather than a single number applied to every job.
Quick Recap
Common storage mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | What it causes | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving bundles on soil or grass | Ground moisture enters the bottom boards; supports settle | Move the load to a drained hard surface and elevate it on level, durable supports |
| Using only end supports | Long boards sag between bearing points | Add full-width, uniformly spaced supports and align them through every tier |
| Offsetting stickers from one layer to the next | Concentrated loads, bowing and distortion | Rebuild the affected tiers with vertical sticker alignment |
| Wrapping a wet pile airtight | Condensation and slow evaporation encourage stain or decay | Keep rain out while leaving ventilated side gaps and keeping fabric off the boards |
| Using a flat tarp that holds water | Leaking or pooled water reaches the top course | Pitch and secure the cover so water runs off |
| Assuming kiln-dried means weatherproof | Outdoor humidity and rain raise moisture content again | Use a roofed enclosure or a properly covered, elevated stack |
| Building higher than the pile can safely support | Collapse or falling-board hazards | Follow OSHA’s 16-foot maximum for manually handled piles and reduce height when conditions require |
A practical decision checklist
- Will the lumber remain stored more than a short period? Choose a roofed, dry enclosure if possible.
- Does the site drain? Reject locations where rainwater or slab moisture can pool.
- Is the foundation level and strong enough for the full load?
- Are the first boards raised clear of soil and damp concrete?
- Do stickers extend across the full package, remain dry and straight, and line up vertically?
- Can the stack remain self-supporting without leaning or unsupported overhangs?
- Does the cover shed rain while leaving enough ventilation to prevent condensation?
- Will someone inspect the pile after storms and during damp seasons?
- Has each board been checked for visible water damage, mold and distortion before installation?
- Do the final moisture condition and acceptance criteria come from the project specifications for the species, climate and end use?
