Use the battery maker’s manual for charging and temperature limits: there is no evidence-based, universal “store at 50%” rule, and leaving every battery on a charger is not a safe default.
The safe default between projects
Most modern cordless construction tools use lithium-ion packs. Their storage needs are straightforward, but the exact charge and temperature rules belong to the battery platform and its manual. A sound routine is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Remove the pack from the tool when it will sit unused for an extended period.
- Check the casing, contacts, and release mechanism before storage.
- Place the pack in a cool, dry area protected from direct sun, water, condensation, and conductive metal.
- Follow the maker’s stated charging instruction for the expected idle period.
- Keep the pack, tool, and charger within the same compatible platform.
- Send a damaged or exhausted pack through the manufacturer’s service or recycling route rather than opening or repairing it.
These steps reduce accidental shorts, corrosion, thermal stress, and avoidable capacity loss. They do not make an old battery new again: capacity decline from age and use is irreversible.
Identify the battery platform before you store it
Look at the label on the pack and the tool. Record the manufacturer, voltage family, model number, and the charger model. A charger that physically accepts a pack is not automatically safe for it. Milwaukee’s lithium-ion operator manual, for example, limits its packs to compatible Milwaukee lithium-ion tools and its chargers. Treat cross-brand or improvised charging as incompatible unless the manufacturer expressly approves it.

Download or keep the manual for the exact model family. Instructions can differ even within a manufacturer’s range, particularly for maximum storage temperature, long-term charging, and service procedures. A general webpage cannot override a warning printed in the manual supplied with your pack.
Prepare a battery for storage: step-by-step
- Stop work normally. Do not deliberately run the pack to a hard cutoff. DEWALT’s June 8, 2026 guidance says, “You should stop using a battery as soon as you feel a substantial decrease in power from the tool.” A sudden loss of power is a reason to stop and inspect, not to keep pulling the trigger until the pack is completely flat.
- Switch off and remove the pack. Press the tool’s release buttons and lift the battery straight out. Do not store a pack locked into a tool for an extended shutdown; accidental trigger operation, tool faults, or contact with a hot surface can then affect both items.
- Inspect the casing. Look for cracks, splits, swelling, melted plastic, loose parts, burn marks, leaking material, or a pack that no longer latches securely. Set a visibly damaged pack aside in a safe location and follow the maker’s service instructions; do not use it or attempt to open it.
- Check the contacts. The terminals should be dry and free of debris. Do not scrape them with metal or bridge them with a screwdriver. If the manual permits exterior cleaning, use that method only.
- Choose the storage location. Use a dry indoor area with stable temperatures, away from windows receiving strong sun, radiators, heaters, boilers, welding sparks, and damp floors. Avoid a vehicle, an unventilated metal shed in summer, or any place where condensation forms.
- Protect the terminals. Keep the pack in its case, a non-conductive compartment, or another container that prevents keys, coins, nails, screws, and other metal objects from touching the contacts. Do not put loose packs in a toolbox pocket containing fasteners.
- Apply the platform’s charge rule. The required state depends on the expected storage time and the manual. The documented DEWALT and Milwaukee instructions differ, as shown below.
- Label unusually long storage. If a project is paused for a season or more, write the date on the case or maintenance log. That makes it easier to perform the maker’s recommended check instead of forgetting a pack for years.
How preparation changes with the idle period
| Expected idle time | Practical preparation | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| A few days to several weeks | Remove the pack from the tool, inspect it, protect the terminals, and store it in the approved environment. Recharge before the next job according to the normal operating instructions. | Do not assume a charger should remain connected continuously. |
| Several months | Use the maker’s long-storage charge instruction and record the storage date. Recheck the pack before returning it to work. | Do not invent a target percentage if the manual does not state one. |
| More than six months | Apply the exact long-storage direction for the platform. DEWALT’s general guidance calls for a full charge before storage longer than six months. | That DEWALT instruction is not a universal rule for every manufacturer. |
| About one year | Milwaukee’s cited operator manual says to charge the pack normally after about a year of storage. Inspect it first and use only a compatible Milwaukee charger. | “One year” is the manual’s maintenance interval, not a guarantee that every pack will retain its original capacity. |
Manufacturers do not establish one cross-brand lithium-ion storage percentage in the supplied guidance. A 50% recommendation often repeated online should not replace the instruction for your particular pack.
Temperature, moisture, and location controls
Heat accelerates battery aging and can create a hazardous condition; moisture can corrode contacts or provide a path for a short circuit. Keep packs in a cool, dry place with ordinary indoor temperature stability and no direct sunlight. Do not store them where water, rain, condensation, or conductive and corrosive liquids can enter.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe numerical limits below are manufacturer-specific, not a shared industry threshold:
| Platform guidance | Published limit or warning | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| DEWALT instruction manual cited for long storage | Do not store or use the tool and battery where temperatures may reach or exceed 104°F (40°C). | Apply this number only to the relevant manual and model family. Keep the pack out of hot vehicles and sunlit enclosures even when a forecast is below the limit. |
| Milwaukee lithium-ion operator manual | Do not store where temperatures may exceed 120°F (50°C). | The manual gives direct sunlight, a vehicle, and a summer metal building as examples of unsuitable locations. |
Neither value makes a hot location acceptable merely because it remains under the stated maximum. Stable, shaded, dry indoor storage gives more margin than a place that repeatedly heats and cools.

Should a battery stay on the charger?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Leaving a pack connected because it is convenient can conflict with the platform’s storage instructions, while some chargers have a manufacturer-designed maintenance function.
DEWALT’s June 8, 2026 battery-life guidance says DEWALT chargers have a maintenance mode that can keep batteries fully charged. That statement applies to DEWALT packs and chargers designed for that function; it is not evidence that every charger should remain powered with a battery attached. For extended storage, DEWALT’s general guidance says to remove the pack from both the tool and charger and fully charge it before storage longer than six months.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Milwaukee’s cited operator manual directs users to store the pack and charger in a cool, dry place and to charge the pack normally after about a year of storage. It does not establish a recommendation to leave a pack continuously connected during storage. Follow the exact manual for your charger rather than relying on a generic “trickle charge” assumption.
A practical charger decision
- Short interruption: charge normally when needed, then disconnect if the manual does not specify a maintenance mode.
- Long shutdown: use the platform’s stated long-storage procedure and keep the pack out of the charger unless that procedure expressly says otherwise.
- Unknown charger or mixed platforms: stop and identify the approved charger before charging. Do not experiment with adapters or a charger from another brand.
DEWALT and Milwaukee instructions compared
The following comparison keeps each figure and requirement within the scope of the cited manufacturer material.
| Question | DEWALT guidance | Milwaukee guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Where to store | Cool, dry location; avoid liquids, oils, direct sun, and extreme heat or cold. | Cool, dry place at room temperature; avoid damp locations and moisture. |
| Remove from tool? | Yes, for extended storage; the cited manual also says to keep the pack out of the charger and tool for long storage. | Store the pack under the manual’s cool, dry conditions; use the specified compatible tool and charger when operating or charging. |
| Long-storage charge | General guidance says fully charge before storage longer than six months. | Charge normally after about a year of storage. |
| Temperature number | The cited instruction manual warns against locations that may reach or exceed 104°F (40°C). | The cited operator manual says not to store above 120°F (50°C). |
| Charger maintenance | DEWALT describes a charger maintenance mode that can keep batteries fully charged. | No continuous-connection recommendation is established in the cited manual. |
| Damaged pack | Do not use a cracked or visibly damaged pack; seek service-center help rather than repairing it. | Take a damaged pack to a service facility. |
| End-of-life route | Use DEWALT service centers for safe lithium-ion battery disposal. | Follow federal, state, and local requirements; contact a local recycling agency and tape the terminals before disposal. |
Prevent shorts and liquid damage
A lithium-ion pack can deliver high current if its terminals are bridged. Keep contacts away from keys, coins, nails, screws, blades, and other conductive metal. Milwaukee warns that a short circuit can cause fire, injury, and product damage. Store each pack so its terminals cannot touch another pack’s contacts or loose hardware.

Never immerse a battery or allow water, rain, coolant, solvent, or another conductive or corrosive fluid to enter the casing. A pack that has been soaked should not be “dried out and tried” without the maker’s direction. Isolate it from normal stock and contact an authorized service route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCleaning and inspection between jobs
Routine cleaning should be gentle and limited to the outside. DEWALT’s safety guidance permits a clean, slightly damp cloth and prohibits solvents. Milwaukee says not to use oil or solvents because the plastic casing can become brittle and crack, and it warns against water exposure. Let a cloth be damp rather than wet, keep liquid away from seams and terminals, and follow the stricter instruction in your own manual.
Do not lubricate the contacts, spray electrical cleaner into the pack, sand the casing, or remove the screws. The pack contains cells and protection electronics that are not user-serviceable. Opening, modifying, rebuilding, or bypassing protection circuits can create fire and shock hazards and can void the manufacturer’s support.
Reject a pack before the next project if you see
- A crack, bulge, split seam, melted area, burn mark, or leaking material.
- Corroded, pushed-in, loose, or visibly damaged terminals.
- A latch that will not hold the pack securely in the tool or charger.
- Unusual heat, odor, smoke, hissing, or rapid loss of power.
- A pack that was dropped heavily, crushed, punctured, or exposed to liquid.
Do not charge or use a pack showing these symptoms. Place it where people and combustible materials are protected, avoid touching damaged areas unnecessarily, and arrange manufacturer service or disposal instructions.
Battery aging and signs it is time to replace the pack
Storage cannot stop normal electrochemical aging. DEWALT Support’s 2024 estimate is about two to three years or 300 to 500 charge cycles, whichever comes first, for a typical lithium-ion battery. DEWALT defines one cycle as using the pack from fully charged to fully discharged and then recharging it. This is a DEWALT estimate, not a cross-brand service life or a guarantee for every model.

Capacity loss is irreversible. Compare the pack with its own earlier performance under similar conditions rather than judging by age alone. A pack that runs a saw for noticeably less time, causes the tool to shut down under a familiar load, or shows a substantial power drop should be evaluated. DEWALT’s advice to stop when you feel a substantial decrease in power helps prevent forcing an exhausted pack through the rest of a job.
Do not attempt to restore lost capacity by repeatedly running the pack flat, freezing it, heating it, or opening it. Those practices do not reverse aging and can create additional hazards. Replace it with the exact voltage and platform family approved for your tool; physical fit alone does not prove electrical compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Disposal and recycling at end of life
Do not put a lithium-ion tool battery in household trash, a construction-site scrap bin, a fire, or an incinerator. DEWALT directs users to its service centers for safe lithium-ion battery disposal. Milwaukee advises following federal, state, and local requirements, contacting a local recycling agency, and covering the terminals with electrical tape before disposal to reduce the chance of a short.
- Stop using the pack and identify its manufacturer and model.
- Ask the manufacturer or local recycling agency for the accepted drop-off route.
- Keep the pack dry and protected from metal while you arrange transport.
- Apply electrical tape over the terminals when the manufacturer or recycling authority instructs you to do so; do not wrap a swollen or leaking pack in a way that traps heat.
- Tell the receiving service if the pack is damaged, swollen, wet, or otherwise abnormal.
Local rules vary, so the service center or recycling agency’s instructions control the final handling method.

Common storage mistakes and the fix
Leaving the pack in the tool
Why it fails: The tool can be triggered accidentally, and the pack remains exposed to the tool’s storage conditions. Fix: Remove it for extended storage and protect the terminals separately.
Keeping every pack on a charger
Why it fails: Charger behavior and maintenance modes differ. Fix: Follow the platform-specific charging instruction; treat continuous connection as allowed only when the maker explicitly describes it.
Using a hot vehicle or metal shed
Why it fails: Enclosures can exceed the stated temperature limits even when the outdoor air feels moderate. Fix: Move packs to stable indoor storage away from sunlight and heat sources.
Storing loose packs with fasteners
Why it fails: A coin, nail, or key can bridge the contacts. Fix: Use the original case or a non-conductive compartment.
Cleaning with solvent or oil
Why it fails: Solvents and oil can damage the casing or carry liquid into the pack. Fix: Use only the exterior-cleaning method in the manual, such as DEWALT’s clean, slightly damp cloth guidance.
Opening a weak or cracked pack
Why it fails: Internal cells and protection electronics can remain energized, and a damaged pack may be unstable. Fix: Stop using it and use the manufacturer’s service or disposal route.
Bottom line for contractors
Store batteries as controlled inventory, not as loose accessories: remove them from tools for extended downtime, keep them cool and dry, prevent terminal contact, and apply the charging rule printed for that platform. DEWALT and Milwaukee publish different long-storage and temperature instructions, so a universal percentage, temperature, or charger habit is not reliable. Inspect packs before every major project, retire damaged or severely weakened units, and recycle end-of-life batteries through the manufacturer or local authority.
