How to store and maintain Makita lithium-ion batteries safely

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove a Makita lithium-ion battery from the tool when the job is over, fit its terminal cover, and keep it in a dry, ventilated place away from heat, flames, water and metal objects. Charge it only with the charger specified for that battery and within the temperature limits in the battery, charger and tool manuals. The exact limits differ by model: for example, Makita’s BL1850B and BL1830 safety sheets specify storage from -30°C to 45°C (-22°F to 113°F), while the DWD181 instruction manual specifies 10°C to 40°C (50°F to 104°F) ambient temperature for charging.

The safe storage routine after every job

A consistent shutdown routine prevents the most common storage hazards: a pack left attached to a tool, exposed terminals, moisture, excessive heat and use of an unsuitable charger. Follow these steps whenever a battery leaves the job site.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Stop the tool and remove the battery. Do not store the tool with the pack installed. Makita’s DWD181 instruction manual specifically says to store the product with the battery removed.
  2. Inspect the pack before putting it away. Look for a cracked case, swelling, melted plastic, leakage, damaged contacts or an unusual smell. If you see damage or the pack behaved abnormally, set it aside and follow the damaged-battery guidance below instead of charging it.
  3. Install the supplied battery cover. The cover shields the terminals from accidental contact and helps protect the pack from dust and water when it is not in use.
  4. Let a hot pack cool naturally. Do not put a battery that has just been working hard straight onto a charger or into a hot vehicle. The DWD181 manual instructs users to cool a hot battery before charging.
  5. Place it in a ventilated storage area. Keep the pack dry and away from direct sun, heaters, flames, welding sparks and other heat sources.
  6. Separate it from conductive objects. Coins, nails, screws, keys, loose tool bits and other metal can bridge the terminals. Store the battery in its cover or a non-conductive compartment rather than in a mixed hardware bin.

This routine is more important than any generic “best” charge percentage. Makita’s published instructions do not establish one universal storage percentage or annual degradation rate for every lithium-ion pack.

Why terminal protection and separation matter

A lithium-ion pack can deliver very high current if its terminals are shorted. A metal object touching both contacts can produce rapid heating, burns, sparks, battery failure or a fire. A short can happen while a battery is loose in a tool bag, drawer, truck cab or pocket, even when the pack is not connected to a tool.

Keep the cover on whenever the battery is outside a tool or charger. Do not wrap the pack with loose metal hardware, place it under a pile of fasteners, or carry it in a compartment that also contains keys or coins. If a terminal is visibly bent, contaminated or damaged, do not scrape it with a metal implement or attempt to straighten it; remove the battery from service and consult the model instructions or Makita service.

Choosing a storage location

Use a dry, ventilated space

Store batteries where air can circulate and where condensation, rain and standing water cannot reach them. A shelf or cabinet in a dry workshop is preferable to an unventilated box. Keep the pack away from plumbing leaks, wash areas, concrete floors that stay damp and locations where sawdust or other debris can collect around the contacts.

Ventilation does not mean leaving a battery outdoors. The storage area should be protected from precipitation and direct sunlight while allowing heat to dissipate. Do not seal a warm battery in an airtight container.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control heat and cold according to the model

Temperature limits belong to the specific battery and its documentation. Makita’s BL1850B battery safety data sheet specifies a storage range of -30°C to 45°C (-22°F to 113°F) in a well-ventilated area. The BL1830 safety data sheet gives the same stated range. Those figures apply to the named packs; they are examples, not proof that every Makita battery has identical limits.

Do not leave packs in a parked vehicle, near a radiator, on a roof, in a metal job box sitting in the sun, or beside a generator exhaust. A vehicle interior can exceed the published upper limit even when the outside air feels moderate. If a pack has been exposed to extreme cold, allow it to reach the temperature specified in its manual before charging or using it. Never heat a frozen battery with a flame, heat gun or improvised heater.

Keep batteries away from ignition and chemicals

Do not store packs next to fuel, solvents, gas cylinders, open flames, grinding sparks or hot work. Keep them away from corrosive chemicals and from areas where they can be crushed by stored materials. A battery case that looks intact can still be compromised by impact or pressure.

Charging without damaging the pack

Use the specified charger and verify compatibility

Match the charger to the exact battery family and model. A connector that fits, or a charger with the same nominal voltage, is not enough to establish safe compatibility. Battery safety sheets direct users to the specified charger, and Makita’s manuals provide the approved combinations.

Makita U.S.A. says its chargers are designed not to overcharge Makita lithium-ion batteries. Its description of the DC18RC Rapid Optimum Charger says the charger monitors charge level and enters a maintenance mode after a full charge. That statement applies to Makita chargers and the batteries they are designed to communicate with; it is not a reason to use an unverified third-party charger.

Charge at the temperature required by the manual

The DWD181 instruction manual recommends an ambient charging temperature of 10°C to 40°C (50°F to 104°F). It also says to let a hot battery cool before charging. Treat those values as DWD181 guidance rather than a universal specification for every Makita tool and pack. Check both the battery documentation and charger manual when they are available.

If the charger refuses to start, shows a temperature warning or pauses during charging, move the battery to a suitable indoor temperature and allow it to stabilize. Do not bypass a charger warning, cool a hot pack with water, or place a cold pack directly against a heater. If the warning persists at the correct temperature, stop using the pack and consult Makita service or the exact manual.

Place the charger safely

Set the charger on a stable, non-combustible surface with its ventilation openings clear. Keep it dry and away from dust-producing work while charging. Do not cover the charger or place it inside a closed toolbox. Check the power cord and plug for damage before use, and disconnect the charger according to its instructions when the charging cycle is complete.

Storing batteries for winter or other long periods

Long-term storage requires the same terminal, temperature and moisture controls as daily storage, plus a review of the exact manual. The DWD181 manual states: “When the lithium-ion battery is not used for a long time (6 months or more), we recommend that you charge it prior to storage.” That is a recommendation in the DWD181 battery section, not a universal charge-percentage rule for all Makita packs.

Before a six-month shutdown

  1. Identify each pack by its model number and locate the corresponding battery safety sheet, tool manual and charger instructions.
  2. Inspect the case and terminals, then clean only as the manual permits. Do not open, solder, alter or disassemble the pack.
  3. Charge it using the specified charger and the permitted ambient temperature.
  4. Remove it from the charger, fit the cover and record the storage date if the workshop manages many packs.
  5. Store it in a dry, ventilated location within the model’s stated temperature range, separated from metal hardware.

Do not invent a target state of charge from advice for another battery brand. The available Makita documents cited here do not establish one percentage that applies to every model. When the manual for your pack gives a different long-term-storage instruction, follow that model-specific instruction.

Checking a pack after seasonal storage

Examine the case and contacts before putting the battery back into service. If it is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, odorous or otherwise abnormal, do not put it on a charger. If the tool’s operating time has become excessively short, Makita’s tool guidance says to stop operating immediately; arrange service or replacement rather than repeatedly cycling a suspect pack.

Routine maintenance and inspection

Inspect before each use

  • Check the outer case for cracks, deformation, punctures, swelling, melted areas or signs of impact.
  • Check the terminals for dirt, corrosion, looseness or damage.
  • Confirm that the battery cover and locking features are intact.
  • Watch for leakage, smoke, a sharp chemical odor or unusual heating.
  • Confirm that the battery model is approved for the tool and charger.

A normal-looking battery that suddenly becomes hot, loses power unusually quickly, triggers repeated charger faults or causes the tool to stop should be removed from service. Do not continue operating it to “use up” the remaining charge.

Clean without creating a new hazard

Follow the battery and tool manual for cleaning. Keep liquids, compressed-air abuse, metal picks and abrasive tools away from the contacts. Never immerse a pack, wash it under a tap or spray cleaner into the terminal area. If dust is packed into the tool interface, disconnect the battery and use the cleaning method specified by the tool manufacturer.

Never open or modify the pack

Makita safety sheets warn against opening, disassembling, altering, soldering, crushing or shorting the battery. Internal cells and protection electronics are not user-serviceable. Do not replace cells, add wires, bypass protection circuits or attempt a case repair with heat. A damaged pack belongs with the manufacturer’s service or an appropriate recycling route.

Using batteries on tools and chargers

Remove the pack when the tool is idle

Even if the tool is switched off, remove the battery before placing the tool in storage, transporting it or putting it in a case. The DWD181 manual expressly directs storage with the battery removed. This prevents accidental activation and avoids leaving the terminals exposed inside a tool case.

Transport with the cover fitted

Use the supplied cover whenever a battery is carried separately. Arrange packs so they cannot be crushed or struck by heavy equipment. Keep them out of direct sun and away from hot vehicle surfaces. Do not carry loose packs with fasteners, blades or hand tools that can contact the terminals.

Do not leave a pack connected indefinitely as a storage habit

Makita’s charger design is intended to prevent overcharging, and the DC18RC description includes a maintenance mode after full charge. That does not change the storage practice: remove the battery from the charger and tool when the charging cycle is complete unless the specific manual directs otherwise. Store it covered, dry and within the stated temperature range.

What to do when a battery is damaged or behaves abnormally

Stop using a pack immediately if it is swollen, cracked, leaking, smoking, sparking, unusually hot, giving off an odor, or producing a sudden and severe loss of runtime. Move people away from the area and keep the pack away from combustible materials only if doing so can be done without touching a hot, leaking or smoking battery. Do not puncture it, place it in water, tape over a damaged case as a repair, or put it on a charger to test it.

For a pack that is merely worn out but not physically damaged, use the disposal route specified for your region. For a pack with visible damage or a thermal incident, contact Makita service or local hazardous-materials authorities for handling instructions before transport. Do not place lithium-ion batteries in household trash or an ordinary mixed recycling bin.

Recycling and disposal in the United States

Makita’s U.S. service FAQ identifies Makita Factory Service Centers and local recycling facilities as disposal options and points users to Call2Recycle to locate a participating facility. Availability, accepted battery types and preparation rules vary by location, so confirm the facility’s instructions before delivery.

  1. Identify the battery model and condition.
  2. Ask the Makita Factory Service Center or local recycling facility whether it accepts that pack.
  3. Use the facility’s instructions for terminal protection and packaging. Do not improvise packaging for a damaged or leaking battery.
  4. Keep the battery separated from household waste until it reaches the approved collection point.

Readers outside the United States should use the collection system required by their local authority. Recycling rules and transport requirements can change, and a service center may provide safer instructions for a damaged pack than a general drop-off site.

Model-specific figures at a glance

Instruction Published value or wording How to apply it
BL1850B storage -30°C to 45°C (-22°F to 113°F), in a well-ventilated area Applies to the BL1850B safety data sheet; verify the limits for another model.
BL1830 storage -30°C to 45°C (-22°F to 113°F) Applies to the BL1830 safety data sheet; do not assume every pack has identical limits.
DWD181 charging ambient temperature 10°C to 40°C (50°F to 104°F) Instruction in the DWD181 manual; cool a hot battery before charging.
DWD181 long-term storage Charge before storage when unused for six months or more Recommendation in the DWD181 manual, not a universal rule for all Makita batteries.
Makita charger overcharge behavior Makita says its chargers are designed not to overcharge its lithium-ion batteries Use a specified Makita charger and follow its manual; this does not validate third-party chargers.

Common storage mistakes and the safer alternative

Mistake Why it is unsafe or unreliable Safer alternative
Leaving the battery in the tool The tool can be activated accidentally, and the pack is harder to protect during transport or storage. Remove the pack, fit its cover and store the tool separately.
Dropping loose batteries into a fastener box Coins, nails and screws can short the terminals. Use the supplied cover and a compartment free of conductive objects.
Storing packs in a hot vehicle Vehicle interiors can exceed the model’s upper storage limit. Move packs to a shaded, dry, ventilated location within the published range.
Charging a hot battery immediately The DWD181 manual directs users to cool a hot pack before charging. Allow natural cooling, then charge within the manual’s temperature range.
Using a charger because the plug fits Connector shape and nominal voltage do not prove safe battery communication or compatibility. Use the charger specified for the exact battery and tool system.
Opening a failed pack Cells and protection electronics can remain hazardous, and internal repair is not a user task. Stop using it and contact Makita service or an approved recycling route.
Putting a damaged battery in normal recycling A damaged lithium-ion pack can create a fire during collection or processing. Ask the service center or local authority for damaged-battery handling instructions.

A practical workshop checklist

  • Battery removed from the tool before storage.
  • Terminal cover fitted whenever the pack is not connected to a tool or specified charger.
  • Storage area dry, ventilated and protected from rain, flames, sparks and direct sun.
  • No coins, nails, screws, keys or other conductive metal touching the terminals.
  • Temperature checked against the exact battery safety sheet and manual.
  • Battery allowed to cool before charging when it has been hot from use.
  • Specified charger used, with its vents clear and its cord undamaged.
  • Case, contacts and runtime checked for abnormal signs before use.
  • Damaged, leaking, swollen or unusually hot packs removed from service.
  • End-of-life packs routed through Makita service, an appropriate local facility or the applicable battery-recycling program.

When the battery model, charger and tool manual disagree with a general storage habit, follow the model-specific safety documentation. Makita’s published limits and disposal routes can change with revisions, battery models and local rules, so keep those documents with the equipment records used in your workshop.
