How to Stop Water Leaking Around a Shower Screen

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop the leak by tracing where water first escapes, then repair that specific path. Water running under the door usually points to a worn bottom seal, an uneven door gap or poor alignment. Water appearing where the enclosure frame meets the tray usually calls for a carefully prepared external reseal, but only if the screen maker’s instructions specify that seal path. Water showing below the tray, around the waste or through a ceiling indicates a possible concealed plumbing or tray leak; adding silicone around the glass will not fix it.

Dry the bathroom, observe the first point of escape during normal showering, and use the matching repair below. Do not apply extra silicone indiscriminately: the wrong bead location can trap water or divert it into the structure.

Identify the leak route before repairing anything

Remove standing water and dry the screen, tray and floor. During a short, normal shower, watch the enclosure from outside without directing a hose at joints that are not normally sprayed. Note the first place moisture appears, not merely where it eventually pools.

Where water first appears Most likely area to inspect Appropriate next step
Directly beneath the hinged or sliding door Bottom sweep or drip seal, door gap and alignment Inspect the seal, check that the gap is even, then replace or adjust the seal and hardware as required.
At the wall-side or hinge-side vertical joint Blade seal, magnetic closure, frame joint or diverted spray Check that seals are seated and undamaged, that the door closes fully and that the shower spray is not aimed at the joint.
Along the frame-to-tray joint Failed, cracked or mouldy silicone at the base frame Remove failed sealant, clean and dry the joint, and reseal only on the surface and in the location specified by the enclosure maker.
On the floor outside but not at the screen edge Water tracking from the tray, threshold or an adjacent joint Follow the water back to its first appearance; do not assume the visible puddle is the source.
Below the tray, around the waste or through a ceiling Waste connection, trap, pipework, tray movement or concealed waterproofing Stop using the shower and arrange an inspection. A screen seal cannot repair a concealed leak.

This diagnosis separates the documented failure modes described by enclosure manufacturers from leaks that are outside the screen assembly. If the route changes when the shower head is moved, test again with the spray directed normally; an artificial spray test can create a leak that ordinary use does not.

Prepare safely and gather the right materials

Before removing a seal or silicone, make the area safe and give the joint enough time to dry. Keep water out of the enclosure while sealant is curing.

Basic equipment

  • Absorbent cloths or paper towels and a dry, ventilated work area.
  • A plastic scraper or dedicated silicone-removal tool. Avoid metal blades on coated trays, frames and glass.
  • Bathroom-safe cleaner suitable for the tray and frame, plus clean water and lint-free cloths.
  • A replacement bottom seal matched to the screen profile, glass thickness, length and lip direction.
  • High-quality bathroom sanitary silicone when the enclosure instructions call for a frame reseal.
  • A sealant gun and a finishing tool or other method for smoothing a continuous bead.
  • A screwdriver or adjustment key only if the screen’s instructions identify the relevant hinge, roller or height adjustment.

Read the enclosure installation or spare-parts information before ordering a seal or opening a joint. Profiles that look similar are not automatically interchangeable, and sealant placement differs between designs.

Repair a leak escaping under the shower door

A damaged, perished or missing bottom seal is a manufacturer-documented cause of water escaping beneath a shower door. An uneven gap can produce the same symptom even when the seal looks intact.

1. Inspect the bottom seal

  1. Open the door and examine the full length of the flexible seal. Look for splits, flattened sections, shrinkage, hardening, missing pieces or a seal that has pulled away from the glass.
  2. Check both ends. Water can escape through a short unsealed section beside a wall channel or hinge even when the centre of the seal appears sound.
  3. Clean away soap film so you can see whether the seal is seated against the glass and tray as designed. Do not stretch a replacement seal to make it fit; stretching can create a thin section at the end.

2. Check the door gap and alignment

With the door closed, compare the gap above the tray from one end to the other. A visibly tapered gap, a door that drops toward the handle or a latch that needs lifting can indicate hinge or roller misalignment. Use the maker’s adjustment procedure rather than forcing the glass. Depending on the design, the correction may involve roller height, hinge screws or another specified adjustment.

3. Fit a compatible replacement

  1. Measure the old seal’s length only as a starting point. Confirm the screen model, glass thickness, seal profile and the gap the seal is designed to bridge.
  2. Remove the old seal according to the screen instructions. Pulling at an angle can damage a retaining channel or leave fragments behind.
  3. Clean and dry the glass edge and channel. Do not apply silicone to hold a push-on seal unless the manufacturer explicitly requires it.
  4. Fit the new seal without twisting or compressing it. Crosswater’s guidance specifies that the flexible lip should face inside the enclosure; follow the equivalent orientation shown for your model.
  5. Trim only if the instructions permit it, using a clean, square cut. The seal should meet the intended end stops without blocking drainage paths.
  6. Close the door gently and confirm that the seal contacts the tray or threshold evenly without excessive drag.

Run a normal-use test after the seal is seated. If water still escapes, recheck the door alignment and the side seals before adding any sealant; a silicone bead cannot correct a door that is not closing or tracking correctly.

Reseal a leaking frame-to-tray joint

Use this procedure only when the enclosure manufacturer directs you to seal that joint. Crosswater’s troubleshooting instructions describe an external-only reseal for its enclosures and warn that an internal bead can trap water. Other screens may use a different drainage route or seal location.

1. Remove failed silicone completely

  1. Stop using the shower and dry the frame, tray and adjacent wall.
  2. Cut or lift the cracked, detached or mould-contaminated bead carefully, then remove residue with a plastic scraper.
  3. Work along the entire affected run rather than applying a patch over loose material. Silicone will not form a reliable bond to old silicone.

2. Clean and dry the joint

Clean the exposed surfaces with a product suitable for the frame and tray materials. Remove soap deposits, mould and loose debris. Rinse if the cleaner requires it, then dry the joint thoroughly. Moisture hidden behind a frame lip can undermine the new bead, so allow additional ventilation time when the joint has been wet for a long period.

3. Apply the bead in the specified location

Apply one continuous bead of high-quality bathroom silicone along the outside edge specified by the enclosure instructions. Crosswater’s published direction is: “Always seal externally only; sealing internally can trap water and cause leaks elsewhere.” Do not copy that path to a different model without checking its manual; some enclosures are designed with internal channels, weep holes or other drainage details.

4. Tool the bead and observe the cure period

  1. Smooth the bead promptly with a finishing tool or the method recommended for the product, maintaining an unbroken surface contact.
  2. Remove excess silicone before it skins, taking care not to pull the bead away from the joint.
  3. Keep the area dry for the full cure time stated by the enclosure and sealant instructions. Crosswater specifies 24 hours for the reseal procedure described in its troubleshooting guidance.
  4. After curing, inspect for pinholes, gaps at corners and places where the bead has separated from either surface. Correct defects according to the same instructions rather than layering a second bead over a failed one.

Check seals, closure and spray direction

Not every apparent base leak is caused by the bottom edge of the screen. Delta’s leak-prevention guidance calls for checking blade seals and water diverters, confirming that the door closes fully and avoiding direct spray at vulnerable panel joins.

Blade seals and diverters

Make sure each blade seal is fully inserted in its channel and has not curled, split or been cut short. A diverter or deflector should sit in the orientation shown by the maker so water is directed back into the enclosure rather than along the frame.

Door closure

Close the door slowly and look for a continuous contact at the magnetic strip or latch. A door that rebounds, leaves a visible corner gap or requires pressure to stay shut needs adjustment or hardware inspection. Do not compensate for a closure problem with a large external bead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shower spray

Keep the shower head aimed into the enclosure during normal use. Direct spray at a panel join can overwhelm a seal that is intended to shed incidental splash, particularly at the hinge or wall side. If ordinary spray still reaches the joint because of the screen layout, use the manufacturer-approved deflector or seal arrangement.

Bottom tracks

Some designs require silicone at a bottom track; others rely on open drainage or a particular external bead. Apply silicone there only as directed. Blocking a designed drain or weep opening can force water into the frame.

Know when the problem is beyond the screen

Water below the tray, around the waste fitting or through a ceiling is a warning sign for a concealed leak. Possible causes include a loose waste connection, a damaged trap, movement at the tray, failed pipework or compromised wet-area construction. These faults require access and testing beyond the glass enclosure.

Immediate response

  • Stop using the shower until the source has been checked. Trade guidance recommends this precaution when water is appearing below the tray or around the waste.
  • Dry visible water and protect flooring or the ceiling below from further damage.
  • Record when the moisture appears: during shower use, after the tray drains, or even when the shower has been unused. This timing can help distinguish a waste or supply-side problem.
  • Arrange a qualified plumber or bathroom professional to inspect the waste, pipework, tray support and surrounding waterproofing.

Do not drill through the tray, flood-test a ceiling or dismantle a framed enclosure without knowing where waterproofing and services run. A screen reseal may hide the visible symptom while the concealed damage continues.

Choose a replacement bottom seal that will actually fit

Replacement seals are not universal consumables. Compare the following details with the screen manufacturer’s parts information before purchasing.

Specification Why it matters How to verify it
Screen model and bracket arrangement Retaining channels and end clearances vary between enclosures. Use the model label, installation paperwork or manufacturer spares information.
Glass thickness The seal’s channel must grip the glass without splitting it or slipping off. Measure only with suitable care and confirm the stated range for the replacement.
Profile shape Bulbs, fins, drip lips and magnetic sections perform different jobs. Compare a cross-section or product drawing, not just the overall length.
Glass-to-tray gap A lip that is too short will not deflect water; one that is too long may buckle or drag. Measure the installed gap with the door correctly aligned.
Length and end shape Ends may need to stop at a wall channel, hinge or designed drainage point. Check the required finished length and whether trimming is permitted.
Lip direction The flexible fin must direct water into the enclosure. Follow the maker’s diagram; Crosswater’s guidance places the lip facing inward.

Crosswater directs owners to manufacturer spares for bottom and threshold seals. A specialist bathroom-parts retailer may also stock compatible profiles, but compatibility should be confirmed against the screen model rather than inferred from a photograph.

Common repair mistakes and their consequences

  • Sealing over old silicone: The new bead may detach with the old layer. Remove failed material first.
  • Applying silicone inside without approval: On enclosures designed to drain through the frame, an internal bead can trap water and redirect it into hidden areas.
  • Using the wrong seal profile: A visually similar strip may not grip the glass or reach the tray gap.
  • Installing the lip outward: Water can be guided toward the floor instead of back into the enclosure.
  • Ignoring door alignment: A replacement seal cannot compensate for a dropped door, uneven rollers or a hinge that no longer closes squarely.
  • Blocking weep or drainage openings: These openings may be part of the enclosure’s intended water-management system.
  • Testing before cure: Showering before the stated cure period can wash out the bead or break its bond.
  • Continuing to use a shower with a concealed leak: Moisture below the tray or in a ceiling needs investigation, not more surface sealant.

After the repair: verify and maintain it

Verification test

  1. Wait through the complete cure period if silicone was used.
  2. Dry the outside of the enclosure and place a clean towel near, but not against, the suspected route.
  3. Take a normal shower with the door closed and the spray aimed as it is during ordinary use.
  4. Observe the first appearance of moisture and inspect the floor, tray underside access area and ceiling below if accessible.
  5. If the original symptom returns, stop adding sealant. Recheck the seal orientation and door alignment, then escalate if the route is below the tray or around the waste.

Routine checks

  • Wipe soap and mineral deposits from the bottom seal and track so the lip remains flexible.
  • Look for splits, hardening, shrinkage or a seal that has pulled out of its channel.
  • Check that the door still closes squarely and that the gap remains even.
  • Keep designed drainage slots and weep openings clear.
  • Inspect external silicone for cracks, mould, gaps at corners or separation from the frame and tray.
  • Use only cleaning products compatible with the screen, tray and seal materials.

A sound repair depends on matching the remedy to the route: replace or adjust the bottom seal for an under-door escape, reseal the specified external frame joint after full preparation, and investigate any moisture that originates below or beyond the enclosure.
