The setup app depends on your Nest camera model. Current cameras—including Nest Cam (battery), Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen), Nest Cam (wired), and Nest Cam with Floodlight—are set up in the Google Home app. Older Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Outdoor, and Nest Cam IQ models use the Nest app.
Connect and test the camera before drilling, mounting, or running cable. That makes it easier to scan the QR code, move the camera near the router, press the reset button if necessary, and confirm that Wi‐Fi works at the final location.

| Camera model | Initial setup app | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam (battery) | Google Home | Indoor/outdoor rechargeable camera; can also use continuous power |
| Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) | Google Home | Indoor wired model |
| Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) | Google Home | Outdoor wired model |

Do not choose the app based only on whether the camera is wired or wireless. Compatibility varies by generation. The current Nest Cam (battery) is not compatible with the Nest app or home.nest.com. Google’s camera compatibility page is the authority if your model is unclear.
How to set up a current Nest Cam in Google Home
1. Charge or power the camera
For a Nest Cam (battery), charge the camera before pairing and preferably charge it above 80% before a wireless installation. Google says a full charge typically takes about five hours with the supplied 7.5-watt adapter and cable. Battery life varies with activity, temperature, settings, and connection method.
If you plan to use continuous power, use the supplied equipment or accessories specifically supported for the model. For the battery camera, Google lists optional 5-metre and 10-metre weatherproof cables for supported outdoor installations. A permanently powered battery camera may maintain its charge at or below 80% to help prolong battery life.

For a floodlight camera or another wired model, use the specified power equipment. A floodlight installation uses hardwired 100–240 V AC power and may require qualified electrical work.
2. Open Google Home and select the correct home
- Open the Google Home app and sign in to the Google Account that should own the camera.
- If you have multiple homes, select the home where the camera will be installed.
- Start the option to add a device or set up a camera. Exact labels can vary by app version, model, operating system, and region.
Choosing the wrong home can make the camera appear to be missing or give access to the wrong household members.
3. Scan the QR code
- Find the QR code on the camera or its removable sticker.
- Scan it when the app prompts you.
- If scanning fails, choose the manual setup option and enter the alphanumeric code printed near the QR code.
For a difficult scan, remove protective film, clean the phone screen and camera lens, increase screen brightness, avoid glare, and hold the phone steady. Use the original sticker or packaging if the code on the camera is inaccessible.
4. Connect the camera to Wi‐Fi
- Select the intended home Wi‐Fi network.
- Enter the password carefully.
- Keep your phone connected to the same intended network during setup.
- Wait for the app to confirm completion before closing it.
If the network is hidden, enter its SSID manually when the app provides that option. Wi‐Fi band compatibility varies by model and network configuration, so consult Google’s Wi‐Fi troubleshooting guidance if the camera cannot find or join the network.

- Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Outdoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- Stay in the know with always-on power: Nest Cam Outdoor keeps you plugged into home, day and night, with no need to recharge or replace batteries
- Google Nest Cam Outdoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Rabbits eating garden plants”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; a wider, taller field of view means almost nothing’s out of frame[1] – even in a long driveway or big yard
Keep the camera near the router while pairing, but not immediately beside it. Google recommends keeping it a few feet away because placing a device too close to the router can also cause connection problems.
5. Name and configure the camera
Give the camera a clear name and assign the correct room. Review detection types, notifications, privacy settings, and Activity Zones. Configure access for household members only after confirming that the camera is in the correct home.
Live viewing, event-based history, and continuous history are different:
- Live viewing shows what the camera sees now.
- Event-based history stores clips or previews associated with detected activity.
- Continuous history records continuously where the model, wired connection, plan, and regional availability support it.
Do not assume that every Nest camera includes unlimited recording. History length and recording features depend on the model, connection type, plan, account, and location.
How to set up an older Nest camera
Use the legacy Nest app for Nest Cam Indoor, Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam IQ Indoor, and Nest Cam IQ Outdoor models.
- Install or update the Nest app.
- Sign in with the Google Account or Nest account associated with the home.
- Tap the option to add a camera or device.
- Scan the QR code, or enter the setup code manually if offered.
- Choose the home, connect to Wi‐Fi, and complete the room and notification settings.
Older models should not be forced into Google Home for initial setup. Use Google’s model-specific app guidance if the camera’s generation is uncertain.
Test the camera before mounting it

Indoor placement
- Use a stable shelf, approved stand, or secure wall location.
- Choose a height and angle that show faces or the area you actually need to monitor.
- Avoid direct sunlight into the lens, heat sources, steam, condensation, and obstructions near the lens or microphone.
- Keep cables secured and away from children, pets, walkways, and moving doors.
- Avoid bedrooms, bathrooms, and similarly private spaces unless everyone affected has given informed consent.
The Nest Cam (battery) can operate indoors without an outlet, and Google lists an optional indoor stand for shelf placement.
Outdoor placement
- Use a model and cable rated for outdoor use.
- Protect cable connections from water and route cables so they cannot be pulled or damaged.
- Do not aim directly into the sun.
- Check Wi‐Fi strength at the exact exterior mounting point.
- Avoid trees, flags, reflective surfaces, or other moving objects that can create constant false alerts.
- Leave safe access for recharging a battery camera.
- Do not mount so high that routine charging, adjustment, or reset requires unsafe ladder work.
The Nest Cam (battery) is weather-resistant and supports an optional weatherproof cable for supported hardwired outdoor use, but weather resistance does not make every cable connection or installation weatherproof. Extreme weather can also affect video quality.
Field of view and privacy
A wider view is not automatically better. It covers more area but can make distant faces and activity smaller. A narrower, carefully aimed view often produces more useful alerts. Use Activity Zones to exclude irrelevant areas instead of simply increasing sensitivity.
Avoid recording neighbors’ private spaces or more public area than necessary. Surveillance and audio-recording laws vary by state, property type, workplace context, and location. Check applicable local requirements before recording people, tenants, employees, or conversations.

Status-light behavior differs by generation, so do not apply one LED chart to every Nest camera. On current Nest Cam devices, common indications include:
| Light | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| Pulsing white | Starting up |
| Pulsing blue | Ready to connect |
| Faster-pulsing blue | Attempting to connect to the app and Wi‐Fi |
| Solid green on a battery model | Working normally and connected |
| Yellow flashing or solid yellow during reset | Factory-reset countdown or reset in progress |

Fix common setup problems
The camera does not turn on
- Test the outlet with another device.
- Fully insert both ends of the cable.
- Try the supplied adapter and cable.
- Charge a battery model for a while before retrying.
- Check that the camera is seated correctly on its stand or magnetic mount.
- Restart it before considering a factory reset.
Insufficient power can also cause poor Wi‐Fi and reduced video quality.
The app cannot find the camera
Confirm the model’s correct app, Bluetooth, camera power, phone Wi‐Fi, QR code, and distance from the router. A used camera may still be registered to its former owner’s account.

QR scanning fails
Clean both surfaces, improve lighting without glare, move the phone closer or farther away, and use manual setup-code entry. If the camera was previously used, reset it only after saving anything you need and removing it from the former account where possible.
The Wi‐Fi network does not appear
- Move the camera nearer the router.
- Restart the router and camera.
- Reduce wireless interference.
- Confirm that the phone has internet access on the same network.
- Enter a hidden SSID manually.
- Check router firewall rules, MAC filtering, client isolation, and network security settings.
- Confirm the camera supports the selected Wi‐Fi band and configuration.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting the modem or router, waiting for it to reconnect, and retrying setup.
The Wi‐Fi password is rejected
Re-enter it before resetting the camera. Check uppercase and lowercase characters, spaces, special characters, and whether the router password changed recently. Confirm that your phone is connected to the intended network.
The camera was already used
Ask the seller to remove the camera from their account. If that is not possible, a factory reset may be required. A restart attempts to reconnect while preserving settings. A factory reset erases personalized settings and video history and makes the camera forget its Wi‐Fi credentials.
For the current Nest Cam (battery), Google’s reset procedure is:

- Plug the camera into power.
- Find the reset button on the back of the camera head.
- Press and hold it.
- At about 10 seconds, the light blinks yellow four times and a countdown tone sounds.
- At about 12 seconds, the light becomes solid yellow and a confirmation tone sounds.
- Release the button.
- If it remains listed as offline, remove it from the app and set it up again.
Factory resetting permanently deletes the camera’s video history and snapshots. Save needed clips first. See Google’s reset instructions for other generations.
The status light turns off during setup
The camera may no longer be awake. Wake or restart it, confirm adequate power, and retry. Do not repeatedly hold the reset button unless you intend to erase the camera.
Video is delayed, blurry, or distorted
- Improve Wi‐Fi coverage or move the camera or access point.
- Check the adapter, cable, outlet, or battery level.
- Clean the lens.
- Change the angle if direct sunlight enters the lens.
- Relocate or protect the camera in extreme outdoor conditions.
- Narrow the view or create Activity Zones if excessive motion causes alerts and congestion.
Battery, wired power, and subscriptions
The Nest Cam (battery) is flexible for renters and locations without an outlet, but wireless use requires periodic charging. Connecting it to continuous power reduces charging interruptions and may enable additional features where Google supports them. Wired indoor and outdoor models are a better fit when continuous power or continuous recording is a priority.
You do not need a Google Home Premium subscription merely to complete initial setup. The included experience and available event previews vary by model. Longer event history, continuous recording on supported wired cameras, video-history search, descriptive notifications, and Gemini-related features depend on the plan, model, account, region, and current rollout.
Google’s published plan details and prices can change. Check the official product and plan information before subscribing. A subscription is most relevant if you need longer history, supported 24/7 recording, or advanced alert features—not simply live viewing.
Changing the Wi‐Fi network later
If the router or Wi‐Fi password changes, open the camera’s settings in the appropriate app and follow the network-change instructions if available. Keep the camera powered and nearby while updating credentials. If the camera is offline and the app cannot change its network, restart the camera and router first. Factory-reset only as a last resort because it erases settings and video history.
