How to Set a Passover Seder Table: A Practical Checklist

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Passover Seder table needs more than dinner plates: prepare the ritual foods, matzah, cups, and Haggadot, then arrange them so everyone can take part. The exact foods and placement vary by family and community, so use the host’s custom or household Haggadah as your guide.

What to put on the Seder table

Plan for each guest’s place setting and the shared ritual items. A conventional place setting can be as simple as a plate, cutlery, water glass, and napkin, adjusted to the meal. The essential preparations described in the sources are:

  • A Haggadah for each participant, if possible, so everyone can follow the order and readings.
  • Three whole matzahs for the Seder setup, plus additional matzah for guests as needed.
  • A Seder plate—or a suitable large plate or tray—with the symbolic foods used in your household’s custom.
  • Salt water for dipping karpas.
  • A cup for each participant for the four cups of wine or grape juice during the Seder.
  • Any household-specific ritual items, such as an additional cup for Elijah or optional newer customs.

These quantities and items reflect the cited guides; practices can differ. Check with the host or community rather than assuming one arrangement applies everywhere.

How to prepare the Seder plate

Chabad’s guide describes a plate with six symbolic foods. The ingredients and their arrangement are a Chabad custom, not a universal template.

Food What it is and how the cited guide describes it
Zeroa A roasted chicken bone representing the Passover offering; in this custom, it is not eaten.
Beitzah A hard-boiled egg.
Maror Bitter herbs, such as horseradish and/or romaine.
Charoset A paste made with fruit, nuts, and wine.
Karpas A small vegetable for dipping. Chabad’s shopping guidance names cooked potato or raw onion for its custom; other practices use celery, radish, or parsley.
Chazeret Additional bitter herbs.

Use a small dish for moist charoset. Chabad’s separate plate-layout guide places the zeroa at the top right, the egg opposite it, maror in the center, and the remaining foods around them. Follow that layout only if it suits the household’s custom; other families may arrange the foods differently. The bone used for zeroa can also vary.

Set out matzah, cups, and Haggadot

Matzah

Set out three whole matzahs for the Seder setup. The cited Chabad guides describe covering or layering them. A dedicated embroidered cover or holder is optional: a clean cloth or napkins can serve as a substitute.

Wine or grape juice

Plan for four cups per participant; the sources describe wine or grape juice. Chabad’s shopping list also includes an additional cup for Elijah. Chabad pages give different minimum cup capacities—3 fluid ounces in one guide and 2.9 fluid ounces in another—so neither figure should be treated as a universal requirement. Ask the host or follow the household’s Haggadah for the practice being observed.

Haggadot

Place Haggadot where guests can reach and read them. Chabad recommends one per participant to make following along easier; its shopping guidance notes that Haggadot are available in many languages.

Arrange the table for participation

Keep the ritual foods near the Seder leader, with enough clear space for Haggadot, meal dishes, and guests’ places. At a larger table, accessible shared bowls—or a small nearby surface for some ceremonial foods—can reduce passing. These are practical hosting choices, not ritual rules.

  • Choose stable cups and consider setting them on saucers. A 2010 JTA hosting article advises against easily tipped stemware on a crowded or moving table.
  • Keep napkins close and leave room for guests to read while eating.
  • Place Elijah’s cup somewhere visible without using essential serving space, if your household sets one out.
  • Keep extra wine and an ice bucket on a sideboard if helpful, rather than crowding the table.
  • For a large group, consider duplicate serving bowls or a nearby serving station so guests can reach shared foods.

Optional additions and differences in custom

Some families include newer customs alongside the traditional Seder foods. Reform Judaism describes Miriam’s Cup, a glass of water recalling Miriam’s well, and an orange on the Seder plate as examples. They are optional, not requirements. Other variations include the vegetable used for karpas, the bone for zeroa, and the plate’s arrangement. If you are joining someone else’s Seder, ask the host what to bring or how to help; treat unfamiliar additions as expressions of custom rather than as mistakes.

What the table’s objects signify

The Seder uses readings, questions, symbolic foods, and ritual actions to guide the retelling of the Exodus. In Reform Judaism’s explanation, karpas evokes spring and salt water recalls the tears of slavery; the Haggadah guides participants through the order. Chabad gives its own explanations for the plate’s foods. Interpretations differ, so a household Haggadah or community guide is the right reference for the meanings used at that table.
