The safest shared specification for a North American Ring Video Doorbell Pro or original Google Nest Hello installation is a 16–24 VAC transformer rated between 10 and 40 VA. In practice, a 16 VAC, 30 VA hardwired doorbell transformer is a strong replacement target: it is within both manufacturers’ published ranges and provides considerably more capacity than the 10 VA minimum.
That specification alone does not guarantee a working installation. You must also identify the exact doorbell generation, check the existing indoor chime and wiring, install the required power accessory, and follow local electrical rules. Transformer replacement involves household mains voltage, so use a qualified electrician if you are not trained to work safely inside an electrical box.

Quick answer: what transformer should you buy?
| Doorbell | Published North American transformer range | Practical shared replacement choice |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Video Doorbell Pro | 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA, 50/60 Hz | 16 VAC, 30 VA listed doorbell transformer |
| Google Nest Hello, now generally called the original Nest Doorbell (wired) | 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA |
A 16 VAC, 30 VA transformer is not a 30-volt transformer. 16 VAC is the output voltage; 30 VA is the amount of apparent-power capacity available to the doorbell, chime, and other connected loads.

Do not substitute a DC power supply, garden-lighting transformer, halogen transformer, or an arbitrary “24 V adapter.” Ring specifically excludes those unsuitable power sources from its Pro guidance. A 24 VAC transformer can fall within the voltage range, but its VA rating, chime compatibility, wiring method, and exact doorbell model must still be correct.

First, identify the exact doorbell
This guide applies to the hardwired Ring Video Doorbell Pro family and the original hardwired Google Nest Hello, which Google now generally identifies as the first-generation Nest Doorbell (wired). It does not establish the correct transformer for every Ring or Nest product.
- Ring battery models: These have different power requirements and installation options. Do not apply the shared 16–24 VAC / 10–40 VA recommendation merely because the product is branded Ring.
- Other Ring wired models: Check the installation requirements for the exact model and generation. Ring’s Pro wiring path and accessories may not apply to a different wired model.
- Nest battery models: Battery Nest Doorbells are not equivalent to the wired Nest Hello.
- Newer wired Nest generations: Google’s current compatibility information lists 16–24 VAC and 10–40 VA for the wired family, but confirm the requirements for your specific generation before purchasing.
Understanding VAC and VA
VAC: the output voltage
VAC means volts of alternating current. The transformer changes household line voltage into the low-voltage AC output used by the doorbell.
For the devices covered here, the output should be within the published 16–24 VAC range. A transformer below that range can cause power interruptions or failure to operate. An unsuitable higher-voltage source can damage equipment. Never connect a doorbell directly to a 120 VAC or 240 VAC household circuit.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →VA: the capacity
VA, or volt-amperes, describes the transformer’s apparent-power capacity. It is not another voltage measurement. The doorbell may need to share that capacity with an indoor mechanical or digital chime and, in some homes, more than one connected doorbell.
A 16 VAC transformer rated at 10 VA may meet the published minimum but leave less headroom for the chime and startup or operating demands. A 16 VAC, 30 VA unit offers substantially more capacity while remaining inside the shared 10–40 VA range. Ring’s replacement guidance specifically points to at least 16 VAC and 30 VA, and Ring’s own hardwired transformer is specified as 120 VAC input, 60 Hz, 16 VAC output at 30 VA.
How to choose the replacement transformer
- Confirm the model. Verify that you have Ring Video Doorbell Pro or a wired Nest Hello/original Nest Doorbell, not a battery or different wired model.
- Read the existing transformer label. Look for output voltage, VA rating, and the AC designation. The transformer may be inside or near the indoor chime, near the breaker or fuse box, or in a basement or crawl space.
- Compare both numbers. A suitable candidate for this shared use case is labeled 16–24 VAC and 10–40 VA. Voltage alone is not enough; a 16 VAC transformer still needs adequate VA capacity.
- Check the chime arrangement. The camera can have an acceptable transformer while the existing chime remains incompatible or incorrectly wired. Account for the required Ring Pro Power Kit or Google chime connector where applicable.
- Choose a listed doorbell transformer. For many replacements, a 16V 30VA doorbell transformer is the practical shared specification. Verify the exact doorbell, chime, physical mounting arrangement, and local code before buying.
- Measure if the label is missing or unclear. Use a multimeter only after following the manufacturer’s instructions for disconnecting the doorbell wires. Do not treat an uncertain measurement as permission to perform mains-voltage work yourself.
Ring Video Doorbell Pro: transformer and chime requirements
Ring’s hardwiring guidance lists Video Doorbell Pro as requiring a hardwired transformer rated 16–24 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 10–40 VA. A 16 VAC, 30 VA transformer therefore fits the commonly recommended replacement target.
For a standard installation using an existing indoor chime, the applicable Ring installation path includes the Ring Pro Power Kit. Ring distinguishes between wiring through an existing chime and wiring directly to a transformer, and Pro generations can have different instructions. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming that all Pro installations use the same terminals or accessory arrangement.

Nest Hello and Nest Doorbell (wired): transformer and chime requirements
Google’s North American compatibility guidance lists the original Nest Hello category—now commonly called the original Nest Doorbell (wired)—at 16–24 VAC. Google’s wired Nest doorbell table lists a 10–40 VA power range.
The original Nest Hello installation uses a chime connector. It keeps power available to the doorbell and helps prevent symptoms such as chime buzzing or unexpected chimes. Google’s current guidance likewise says applicable wired Nest doorbells must be installed with the included chime connector.
If your connector is missing or damaged, look for the model-appropriate Nest doorbell chime connector. Confirm compatibility first: the correct connector may already have been supplied with the doorbell, and a generic accessory is not necessarily equivalent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNest-specific points to check
- Confirm that the product is the wired Nest Hello/original Nest Doorbell, not a battery model.
- Check whether the included chime connector is installed at the indoor chime.
- Do not judge the installation solely by the transformer label; chime wiring and connector installation affect operation.
- Google publishes different regional requirements for some Nest models. The 16–24 VAC / 10–40 VA guidance here is specifically framed for North American installations.
How to check the existing transformer
Read the label first
Turn your search toward the common transformer locations: inside or next to the chime, near the electrical panel, or in a basement, crawl space, utility area, or other accessible location. The label may show an output such as “16 VAC 10 VA,” “16 VAC 30 VA,” or “24 VAC 40 VA.”
For the Ring Pro and wired Nest use case covered here, a label within 16–24 VAC and 10–40 VA is inside the shared published range. If the label shows a lower voltage, a VA rating below 10, DC rather than AC, or no readable information, investigate further before connecting the doorbell.
Measure an unclear system with a multimeter
Google identifies a multimeter measurement of the disconnected doorbell wires as the most accurate way to check system voltage. A non-contact voltage pen may detect nearby electrical fields, but it is not a reliable substitute for measuring the low-voltage AC circuit.
- Read the exact doorbell manufacturer’s instructions and observe electrical safety precautions.
- Shut off the relevant power before accessing wiring or disconnecting conductors.
- Disconnect the doorbell wires as instructed so the measurement is not distorted by the connected device.
- Set a suitable meter function for AC voltage and measure the two doorbell conductors as directed by the meter and product instructions.
- Compare the result with the doorbell’s permitted range.
- Restore wiring only when you can do so safely and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and local code.
A digital multimeter for doorbell voltage can help diagnose an unlabeled low-voltage circuit. It does not make household transformer replacement safe for an unqualified installer, and it cannot verify that the chime, enclosure, grounding, or line-voltage connections comply with code.
When a 24 VAC transformer is acceptable—and when it is not
24 VAC falls within the published voltage range for the North American wired devices discussed here. However, “24 VAC” does not answer all the important questions.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the output AC? | The covered requirements call for VAC. A DC supply is not an equivalent replacement. |
| Is the VA rating within range? | The published range is 10–40 VA. The transformer must also provide enough capacity for the doorbell and chime. |
| Is it a doorbell transformer? | Lighting and specialty transformers may not provide the supported output or installation characteristics. |
| Will the chime work? | The existing chime may require a Ring power kit, Nest chime connector, or a different arrangement. |
| Does the exact doorbell generation allow it? | Product families and regional versions can have different instructions. |
| Is the installation code-compliant? | Transformer replacement includes line-voltage wiring, enclosure, mounting, and jurisdiction-specific requirements. |
For that reason, selecting a 16 VAC, 30 VA listed doorbell transformer is often simpler than choosing a 24 VAC unit at the top of the permitted range—especially when the existing chime and wiring have not yet been evaluated.
Symptoms of the wrong transformer or wiring arrangement
- The doorbell repeatedly loses power or goes offline.
- The device fails during operation or does not complete setup.
- The indoor chime buzzes, rings unexpectedly, or does not ring.
- The transformer becomes unusually hot or the circuit protection trips.
- The transformer has the right voltage but too little VA capacity for the total connected load.
- The transformer is AC-rated incorrectly, is a lighting transformer, or is connected through an unsuitable adapter.
These symptoms do not prove that the transformer is the only problem. Check the chime accessory, loose or corroded low-voltage connections, damaged cable, the exact device instructions, and the line-voltage installation. Stop and obtain professional help if there is heat, burning odor, arcing, damaged insulation, exposed mains wiring, or repeated breaker tripping.
Safety: the low-voltage side is not the whole job
The doorbell wires may carry low voltage, but the transformer’s input side is connected to household mains. Replacing the transformer can require opening an electrical box and handling conductors that can cause severe injury or death.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.North American scope and regional caution
The numerical recommendation in this guide is for North American installations, particularly the United States. Google publishes different requirements for some Nest models in other regions, and electrical codes vary by jurisdiction. A transformer that appears electrically suitable may still require a different mounting method, enclosure, or wiring practice under local rules.
If you are outside North America, use the regional requirements for the exact doorbell rather than importing the 16 VAC, 30 VA recommendation without verification.
Decision checklist
Before purchasing or installing a transformer, confirm all of the following:
- ☐ The device is a Ring Video Doorbell Pro or original wired Nest Hello/Nest Doorbell.
- ☐ The transformer output is AC, not DC.
- ☐ The output voltage is 16–24 VAC.
- ☐ The rating is 10–40 VA, with 30 VA a practical target for replacement.
- ☐ The transformer is intended for a doorbell installation, not garden lighting or halogen lighting.
- ☐ The existing indoor chime and number of connected doorbells have been considered.
- ☐ The Ring Pro Power Kit or Nest chime connector is installed when required.
- ☐ The physical mounting, electrical box, wiring, and local code requirements are suitable.
- ☐ A qualified electrician will handle the mains-voltage work if you are not trained and equipped to do it safely.
What to do if the transformer does not meet the requirements
If the existing transformer is below 16 VAC, has less than 10 VA, provides DC, or has an unreadable label, do not guess. First identify the doorbell and chime arrangement. Then select a listed replacement that meets the exact manufacturer requirements—often 16 VAC, 30 VA for the shared Ring Pro/Nest Hello use case—or have an electrician evaluate the installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 16 VAC, 30 VA transformer compatible with both Ring Pro and Nest Hello?
For North American installations, 16 VAC, 30 VA falls within the published 16–24 VAC and 10–40 VA ranges for Ring Video Doorbell Pro and the original wired Nest Hello category. Confirm the exact model, chime, wiring, and local code before installation.
Can I use a 24 VAC transformer for Ring Pro or Nest Hello?
24 VAC is within the published voltage range for the covered North American wired devices, but the transformer must also have an appropriate VA rating, provide AC output, be suitable for doorbell use, and work with the existing chime and required accessory.
Do I need a chime connector or power kit?
Often, yes. Applicable Ring Pro installations may require the Ring Pro Power Kit when using an existing chime. Wired Nest installations use the included Nest chime connector where applicable. Follow the instructions for the exact doorbell generation and chime arrangement.
Can I use a non-contact voltage tester to check my doorbell transformer?
A non-contact tester is not a reliable way to measure the low-voltage doorbell output. Google identifies a multimeter measurement of the disconnected doorbell wires as the most accurate check. Transformer replacement still involves mains wiring and may require a qualified electrician.
Is a 10 VA transformer enough?
Ten VA is within the published range, but it is the minimum end of that range and may provide less capacity for a chime or other connected load. A 16 VAC, 30 VA listed doorbell transformer is a more practical replacement target for the shared Ring Pro/Nest Hello use case.
The Bottom Line
For a North American Ring Video Doorbell Pro or original Nest Hello, start with a listed 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA AC doorbell transformer; 16 VAC, 30 VA is the practical shared target. Confirm the exact model, chime accessory, wiring, and local electrical requirements before replacing anything—and use a qualified electrician for the mains-voltage portion of the work.
